People only view it that way because it has been in the realm of psychology because medicine had no idea how to successfully treat mental problems. Autism is a physical problem - ultimately a damaged/malfunctioning nervous system. If you treat the damage, the symptoms begin to disappear. I've seen it happen a lot. It is very possible with proper intervention, resources, and hard work.

I don't know anyone who considers Dr. Grandin to be recovered. Recovered has the simple but powerful definition as no longer having the symptoms of autism, the diagnostic tools to discover the problem no longer find one. Basically, development catches up to the age of the individual and normal development recommences, thus, the person no longer has a developmental disorder.

@blondibee72 You may be looking for the other video of Simon which shows footage of him before, during, and after his Son-Rise Program. It was released after this video and is quite inspiring. You can view it by searching "Autism: Full Recovery With the Son-Rise Program"

@CCHarmon88 However, I would like to change some of the NEGATIVE SYMPTOMS of Autism- such as the language delays. Not because I want him to be "normal", but because I want him to live to his potential. He wants to drive, be a chef, play sports- all things he would need to gain verbal/ social skills to truely excel at. His Autism gives him amazing talents, skills and a unique personality, so treating Autism, for me, just means treating those limtiing factor so he can excel.

Try telling that to Simon and other people like him.

How do you know? I know that you are wrong. Autism is a syndrome - diagnosed by the presence of symptoms. If the symptoms disappear, the syndrome no longer exists. If they disappear and normal development begins and continues, how is that not a recover from a developmental disorder? Unless you have an objective physical test that defines the presence of autism, you cannot honestly say that recovery is impossible. You are wrong.

@CCHarmon88 Please do not take this as being rude, argumentative or insulting, but I disagree with this point you have made. My 6 year old son is Autisitic- He suffers mainly from severe language/ communication delays and social limitations. His daily livin skills and cognitive skills are much less limited, close to normal, and his IQ is 71. I do not wish to "change" my son, he will always be Autistic and that is part of the wonderful person he is.

Isn't autism an incurable personality / thought processing problem or something?
It might be possible for people with mild autism to 'get over it' or lessen it maybe but I dunno about this
