Update Aug 2021: this video has now reached 200K views. I want to thank everyone who has watched, commented and subscribed, even though I haven't been especially active on YT.
This video was created as part of a workshop I did a few years ago when I was teaching fine art in Athens, Greece. It doesn't reflect my current artistic practice which is more abstract and expressionistic as well as using more digital tools but I know many people will find it educational.

To me impressionist art is so amazing. The brush strokes are random and scribbly, yet it perfectly portrays what it tries to show. I was introduced to this type of art at a museum where my dad pointed out a painting that became less detailed the closer you got to it.
I agree! For me it is one of the most beautiful art movement. I was introduces to it this year because I am studying art at my school, and it got into my heart!
Impressionism if my favorite because it allows me to paint what a particular scene or subject looks like to me. The freedom it provides helps me thoroughly express myself and how I see my surroundings
The painting took around 1hour to complete. It was the final part of a lecture on impressionism and an attempt to show the thought process of rendering space using color and value.

Very liberating
This is a very effective painting for a 60-minute painting. Monet worked on paintings in many layers (most of the time) and finished in the studio. I like both approaches.
Doesn't really look anything at all like the basket of fruit. But hey -I'm not the artist!

haha, you are so right! The actual reference is the small photo on the top right of the video which is cropped in order to center the camera on the painting. The basket of fruit in the background was one of the many still life subjects in my atelier available at all times to my students for the practice of drawing and painting.

The strokes appear random but the form of things comes from the color selection, values and shadow, contrasts….excellent video thankyou

thanks with the tutorial I as a beginner feel very helped. The obstacle that I feel is that in our area it is difficult to get quality painting dyes. Hopefully the senior painters can help, and I will improve the quality of my paintings.

Quick question..
Was your original dark purple outline made in oil?
How do you avoid the dark colour creating murky mixes later on in the painting? i.e. brushing over it slightly with another lighter colour and pulling it into the light colour > once a bit of dark/murky colour gets onto the brush does it not spread?
I can see the original purple line is very thin, almost dry brush..
Maybe changing brushes is the simple answer, is it even possible (or advisable) to complete such a painting with one brush?

Yes, it is indeed. Sorry about that. This was filmed during a live demonstration and at some point our camera's battery died so we had to wait for it to charge in order to continue filming. Hope to make another video on impressionist techniques where the whole process will be documented sometime in the -not so far- future. Many thanks for the kind words!
