I went to art school. A private art school. The teachers lectures didn't go into half as much detail as you have, and I like the way you choose to utilize a color wheel to express, in conjunction, the reason for using a colors hue with strict attention paid to color theory. Your teaching style is one of the most comprehensive to be sure.
I almost never leave comments on the videos I’ve watched, but feel I must for this one. Thank you for making such an enjoyable and educational tutorial. Your enthusiasm and technique are leave a great “impression”.
I’m watching this in 2023 and have watched countless videos learning about painting and color. This one is the best explanation with examples I have seen 😊 1000 likes to you and thank you for sharing your experience ❤
Thank you, Lilith! Connie Simmons and I were happy to create these programs in connection with the National Gallery and are happy that they are still being viewed. Good luck with your painting! Best, Connie and David
Thank you for being so generous with your in-depth knowledge, the endless tips, and explaining why each step was done in a painting by the artist, etc. I'm looking forward to your online workshops in September!
I first saw Monet at the RI School of Design Museum in Providence in the 60's. Would take the train to Boston Museum of Fine Arts which had even more and sit there for hours looking at them, trying to understand how Monet did it. Monet is the reason I became a painter and am still painting, in my 70's, and continually look to his images for guidance. I was working on a piece just today and took a quick look at one of the Haystack Series for help. His atmosphere and light qualities are untouched by anyone else. He was also incredibly prolific. One of my first heroes. Last year my son and I were at the Chicago Art Institute. We turned a corner and there was a room full of Monets. It was like coming home. Thank you for this video.
The style of Monets’ painting is fast and free and full of energy. It seems to show me the air of the garden with its sense of light, and I can imagine the dense smells of many flowers and plants Blooming into my life.
I was surprised how the elements of your painting shifted my perception of the motif just to land me right back in the "real" world. I would have gone the wrong way about it completely, had I attempted this. Thank you for sharing.
Very impressed with your short, but very educational videos! I started a pastiche on Road to Vetheuil, to see how he worked. It is very time consuming, the ready painting will take at least 24 working hours, and I don't count drying times. Adding dabs of color over and over give this richness of the canvas. He, of course, is extremely versed in colors, perspective and so forth, and no wonder, at Glayre he worked from 8 till 8. He was workaholic for many years. It is a well thought, meticulous process, building these canvases... Thanks once again! Migolette
I like your blend of passion and humility. I am just starting to paint and to understand impressionism so your presentation here has been a real bonus. Thank you so much.
EXCELLENT and INSPIRING: a real glimpse and insight into the spectrum of Monet's technique: I believe you have unravelled several facinating ideas which will enable painters to explore the depths of Monet's work. Please continue to share your views and excellent talent for painting and explaining. This is a wonderful insight. Thank you.
Thank you! My producer, director and editor Connie Simmons and I really appreciate that you watched the video and took the time to comment. We loved creating this and working with the NGA from our series Landscapes Through Time.! Kind regards, Connie and David
Some hints for my fellow painters. Gamblin makes a resin-based oil paint; it is an alkyd and line is called FastMatte. It dries in about 18 hours unless you have heavy impasto. In that case, give it an extra day.
Sus pinturas transmitían Paz, que bien juega usted con los colores, se aprende rápido con esas técnicas, con dos pinceladas se pasa d un motivo a otro hermoso
What a incredibly magical, beautiful place. How lucky for you that you could paint there. Monet is one of my favorite painters from way back then in fact at this moment and for the last 30 years are 3 Monet paintings hanging in my bedroom, one of which is the pond expression. Van Gogh is also a favorite, I just really love these types of paintings. ☮️🙏💜 Had to come back in to say thanks and you are very knowledgeable and talented.
Larger to smaller and closer together (both horizontally & vertically) gives the sense of 3D perspective. As the object shrinks, so does the space around it and the detail also lessens (which you can understand by squinting).
I love your location, lesson and finished results. Where can I find more of your lessons? Some of these so called viewer-artists who comment are so rude. I hope you can disregard the cowards who hide behind a computer and throw that type of negativity at you. They don’t even listen to the fact that you admit you are not following Monet’s exact process.
He paints on really shitty paper, and actively disregards his process when the video title advertises that it is going to show Monet's process. Stop giving him more credit than he deserves. You're not gaining anyone's respect by being an apologist
KantraScepter The video never said it'll show Monet's process? It simply stated technique and palette. Plus, he does show how Monet would've started, like big confident strokes that capture expression and contrast. Your skills matter more than the material you're working with. Even if your equipment is inferior it doesn't abstain you from creating. Don't personally attack people from actually learning something from the video.
I enjoyed this video so much. I spent last year painting impressionist landscapes in Chicago's parks, and using Monet's techniques in mind helped me create some beautiful pieces.
I thoroughly enjoyed your video. I want to paint like the Impressionists and you have inspired me. I hope that you will have more instructions. Thank You. Lois
I have been to Giverny several times and his house and garden are stunning. I'm planning on painting this view from a series of pictures I took while there. Your video has been very helpful in my thought process. Very well described. You really know what you are talking about.
That was so good! I just saw Mobet the Late Years at the Kimbell in Ft. Worth. I saw the painting you yoy showed a slide of. The use of horizontal and vertical brushwork and deliberate circles for the lilies...well it was so Beautiful you could tear up. You really captured so much of what moved me! Good Job!
I'll be honest, I thought it was a mess at the beginning and it was looking like there was no direction but by the end it was beautiful and insightful.
Wonderful instructor! What is his name and how do I see more of his videos? I love his enthusiasm and the way he conveys his knowledge of painting. Thank you!
I like that you show the color how to mix for us amature painter who paint for fun.Its nice knowing we can learn from a master.I've some paintings that look half decent because of you,Thank you!!!

Extraordinary instruction. I could do his workshops all day.

Watching this guy paint makes me appreciate Monet a whole lot more.
An educational bob ross
hmm it was great.... but that American aspect to it all, im not sure he hit the mark
he needs to squint more...
This instruction is brilliant easy to understand. Love the history tidbits!

I visited Paris so many years ago and lost myself in the museums. Spent days in the Musee d'Orsay... in awe of this painter's work.
Youre not painting color, youre painting light - was an excellent piece of advice id recieved
The style of Monets’ painting is fast and free and full of energy.
It seems to show me the air of the garden with its sense of light, and I can imagine the dense smells of many flowers and plants Blooming into my life.
Yes and seeing his work in person takes your breath away!
So lucid so clear.. so touching.. the master Comes Alive.
Your descriptions of Monet’s technique are really clear, thank you
Beautiful. You took me back in Time to the mind of Monet.
David Dunlop does a terrific job here of explaining how Monet created his magic, and turning out very cool work of his own.
I was surprised how the elements of your painting shifted my perception of the motif just to land me right back in the "real" world. I would have gone the wrong way about it completely, had I attempted this. Thank you for sharing.

David Dunlop really gives some great info on art techniques!
Thanks for mentioning his name, appreciate it
@@Bobasso You're very welcome.
I suddenly saw water in the middle of the clip. You are magician! Thank you soo much!
I like your blend of passion and humility. I am just starting to paint and to understand impressionism so your presentation here has been a real bonus. Thank you so much.
When I went to Monet’s garden, I was surprised how much the actual water lilies looked like his paintings.
J'aime le 'squinting' technique. Il est un grand exercise de minimiser la rive droit de notre cerveux. Bravo.
I adore this video on so many levels. It became a comfort video for me.
Outstanding work and teaching. I wondered if this was worth watching as it was so short and I can't believe you packed so much teaching into this.
I too very much and enjoy how you explain things and how enthusiastic you are. Thank you for your love of art.

Wow! You packed so much information and excitement into short tutorial. Thoroughly informative and entertaining.
Always learn lots from this gentleman and watching him paint is like watching poetry in motion
YOU did a magnificent job of explaining the process... it's a state of mind you have to put yourself in and keep being inspired.
And this painting style allows a very dreamy, vibrational feeling of light dancing -
"that's the universe, life out of chaos"
damn you really took it there I appreciate it
I love watching your process and hearing the wisdom of your teaching. Thank you!
Some hints for my fellow painters. Gamblin makes a resin-based oil paint; it is an alkyd and line is called FastMatte. It dries in about 18 hours unless you have heavy impasto. In that case, give it an extra day.
Thank you! Your explanation of how Monet painted the Lillies makes a mountain of sense.. I enjoyed it thoroughly ! Keep teaching my friend.
I love your teaching style! It’s info packed! You give REASON to what you are instructing. I love it.
Beautiful work
At first I thought you were making nonsense paint, its amazing how the end product looks!
A real masterclass.
Sus pinturas transmitían Paz, que bien juega usted con los colores, se aprende rápido con esas técnicas, con dos pinceladas se pasa d un motivo a otro hermoso

This was so enjoyable to watch and great information on how to paint Monet style. Thank you.
I deeply enjoyed this video. Thank you for putting this together and sharing!!
This opened my eyes wide as a painter!
Lovely narrative on painting visual sensations inspired from Monet and very clear example
Love the way you explained the brush strokes. Thank you!
Thanks for these valuable insights into the exactly technique of Monet. Short and sweet with a painting that makes it complete.

My favorite ARTIST MONET! Thanks for the tutorial.

I agree. I am amazed at some of the comments here. They're maybe caused by their own inability to create.
Most likely they are beginners.

I enjoyed watching this. With expressionism it is hard to realize how something so lovely comes out of it.👏👏

Good idea for a near-sighted like me.
Literally same. I paint without my glasses and I wear bifocals
Some good instruction on colour theory and colour interaction as well as some brush techniques.
Wow I did not expect to understand the concept of impressionism the first timd I hear it but I did! Thank you!
Beautiful. Very special music in the background too
I'll be honest, I thought it was a mess at the beginning and it was looking like there was no direction but by the end it was beautiful and insightful.
