Dear Nancy, How wonderful to see you in this video. I would love to see you and Bob when I visit Maine. The days we spent together at IU were some of the best in my life. Andrea Way
Love Nancy's work! Its a privilege to hear her talk about process and her thoughts on painting. I would love to sit and talk with her, so real and talking my language. Thanks for these inspiring peeps into these artists lives.
"Art is never finished, only abandoned" ("L'arte non è mai finita, solo abbondata") is usually attributed to Leonardo da Vinci, . Some sources also indicate that this statement, or a similar idea, was later adopted by other artists, such as Pablo Picasso or Paul Valéry.
Exactly! I have known so many creative people who just one day as they age they just STOP..... I just don't understand that. I'm 57 and as an artist there are so many things i want to do... so many paintings in my head waiting to be put down.. I don't understand what makes one just stop... And that scares me a little bit.. .worries me a little around the edges... you know.. Will something come along as i age that will just make me want to stop?? Great interview great video!
I think it's fear. It's loss of confidence in one's own ability. It's apprehension at the outcome, it's too scary to start painting if you think the result will be dissapointing. That can come after having to work dull mind numbing jobs to pay the bills for years. Then suddenly you're free, you don't have to work again. But you can't paint, it's such a huge step from the soul destroying routine of working a job you hated for years and now being expected to get back in touch with your creative imagination again. But you buried it for so long and now it's crumpled and starved, so when you finally re discover it you need to nourish it back to life and that can take months or years.😢
Wonderful work and interview Normal Art talk sounds like a linebacker babbling about the game. Beside Gods intervention they need to win the next one. You did 8 out of 10 keep on keeping on
Thanks for your video. I was searching via Europe, traveling 3x to Maine. Searsport was the place we wished to find a place for studios and living. No luck. Now I'm back in Germany and wondering what the world will give us next. It's unsettling. Enjoy your life there.
In art school we heard language regarding recipe of making art as a terrible unholy thing. We were taught certain limited technical things like how to stretch and prime a canvas or watercolor paper, but never ever were we told what or how regarding the painting process. We all taught ourselves through research, observation and hit and miss and miss again until we were okay with our results and many times we were told to start over, or do it again, or try some other way. Most everyone got grades of A or B so that was never the insentive for working.
After a long time painting portraits I gradually lost interest. I’m forever grateful that the desire to paint figurative illustrations replaced my desire to paint portraits. I also moved from oil paint on canvas to pencil, ink and watercolors all tucked away in large format Strathmore watercolor paper books.
I have never liked the term "self taught " I think a better term is "self talent " . Because you need the talent to do what you do. With that talent , then you learn things and you teach yourself . Art schools are or should be teaching you methods and how to use materials . If you don't have the talent then all the teachings will mean nothing to you. People think you didn't go to school if you say self taught . Maybe you did go to art school and maybe you didn't and that should not matter . You don't need to if you are talented . There are a lot of great artists that became great all on their own just because of their talent . I have known people that say they are artists , but have not talent , but are doing art from what the school taught them to do.
That’s my mom!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️

What an adorable final sentiment! My rationale is "but I can't die because who will paint my paintings then?"
Wonderful conversation and spot on in every way . Thank you!

I like the art and imagination. Nancy is good.
This makes me want to move back to Maine. I need an art community that isn't city based.
