I remember this interview when it first came out (showing my age) and that “whatever being in love means” comment really struck me at the time. Another thing was how he proposed and gave her 3 weeks to think it over; the fact that he thought she might need it is a bad sign. Charles actually seems quite upbeat in this interview, and yet he was apparently in tears on the eve of the wedding.

I think the portrayal is extremely caricaturish. There is an elegance and awkwardness here.. But the performance misses this for attempting to copy and results instead in a cartoonish portrayal. These are 2 iconic real life people and I imagine it is difficult... But it's unacceptable that the actors this season are mimicking (badly) rather than bringing their own to the performance. I think Diana was in love with her fantasy of Charles. They didn't know each other. ~~~~~ Some of Diana's comments from a different source paint a different picture. She said she wanted to marry Charles because she believed he couldn't divorce her. Diana suffered from depression, low self esteem, and self destructive behaviors including bulimia before she met Charles. The cause of her mental problems was likely her extremely unhappy childhood. Diana's mother abandoned her childern when Diana was age 6. Diana was the 3rd daughter and her parents were disappointed because they needed a son to inherit the family estate and fortune. I suspect when her younger brother was born Diana was ignored. Diana said she felt unwanted and unloved. She was heartbroken as a young child. Her parents fought, she saw her father hit her mother, their marriage was toxic and they divorced in when Diana was 7 or 8.
At that time, Charles was battling rumors about his sexuality. His former girlfriends described their relationship as completely platonic. Charles, his family, tabloids were desperated to arrange a bride for him, he needed someone very naive. All his previous grfds had turned him down.

Here after watching Harry's wedding. I noticed Princess Diana & Charles rarely looked at each other when discussing the engagement or moment he gave her the Ring! They only looked at interviewer. Also, when asked about the DATE of wedding he wiped his nose. He must have been uncomfortable w/that question (wishing it were Camilla).

Camilla helped Charles choose which girlfriend he should marry. Diana, wanted to be chosen so she pretended to be the meek mouse who wouldn't say a word about his relationship with Camilla. That was part of the test. Camilla was always with them during the courtship conducted at country house weekends. Stephen Barry said usually Camilla's husband would drive Diana back to London Sunday nights and Charles and Camilla would stay on in the country longer without them. For anyone looking for the time of "Whatever in love means," it's at 7:43 and it's more cringe than you could imagine. My gosh. Even the consistent nose scratch of Charles is a dead give away that this was nothing more than a binding contract for him and the gestures of Diana show the tip of the iceberg of the lion's dean she was thrown into/the torment she was under. For anyone saying, "She could've left," we don't know the blackmail set ups or the threats made that forced her into this and kept her there. She was also 19 freaking years old. So much is behind closed doors and if I had to guess, it was far worse than what was disclosed.

I don’t see how anyone could fault her for being troubled or unfaithful knowing the full story. He was fully committed to a whole different woman for there entire relationship, everyone around them knew it and acted as if she was supposed to just accept it and get on as if nothing was wrong and continue being faithful in a loveless marriage where she was literally used as breeding stock & nothing more. He was pushed into this marriage, and he was completely lost. He was an ambitious and imaginative person forced to be a borish, non-thinking future heir (that is why I think that monarchy should be abolished, since it doesn't benefit anybody but avid gossip seekers). Sherry Caraway he shouldn't have have married a 19yo idealistic girl while in love with another woman and then treated his wife so badly. Being in love with someone indifferent towards you and doing anything for their attention makes one a bit crazy, espescially a very young woman. She eventually grew to be a great woman who still had her share of demons. Princess Diana was a wonderful woman, fantastic mother- and had she been treated properly- a perfect wife.
You can't blame suicide attempts on another person. The suicide attempts are a manipulation used by mentally imbalanced people. They try to hold the other person hostage. They are basically saying if you don't do what I say I will kill myself. That behavior makes the other person love you even less and want to be around them less because it's a disgusting way to try to control someone. Here after watching Harry's wedding. I noticed Princess Diana & Charles rarely looked at each other when discussing the engagement or moment he gave her the Ring! They only looked at interviewer. Also, when asked about the DATE of wedding he wiped his nose. He must have been uncomfortable w/that question (wishing it were Camilla).

For anyone looking for the time of "Whatever in love means," it's at 7:43 and it's more cringe than you could imagine. My gosh. Even the consistent nose scratch of Charles is a dead give away that this was nothing more than a binding contract for him and the gestures of Diana show the tip of the iceberg of the lion's dean she was thrown into/the torment she was under. For anyone saying, "She could've left," we don't know the blackmail set ups or the threats made that forced her into this and kept her there. She was also 19 freaking years old. So much is behind closed doors and if I had to guess, it was far worse than what was disclosed.

I know right. She should have been planning her escape route right at that moment! lol But I guess the temptation of wealth, fame and being the Princess of Wales was just too much for her to give up aspiring to.
If you look closely at her face at that point she looks as though he had slapped her, it was just a terrible thing to say. He should have never, never married her and they both would have had happier lives.
cazfarri The interviewer had to school him a little on what it means to be in love. His horrible self still had the nerve to say “whatever your interpretation of being in love means”. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything like this. I’m in shock. Poor Diana 😢💔
Maybe it’s the style of the time, but they did look so much older than what they really were at the time.
The Royal family had princess Diana murdered.
1. Four motorcycles were following Diana the whole night (Likely working with british special forces or M16)
2. There were 14 cameras in that tunel and not one of them was working and managed to capture the "accident"?
3. Multiple witnesses report seeing a bright white light right before the crash (brighter than a camera flash) which was likely a strobe light used to blind the driver.
4. The hospital was 10 minutes away from the crash sight, 20 at most with traffic. It took them over an hour to get there.
5. Just 10 months before Diana's death she wrote a note to a friend stating, and I quote, "Charles is planning a break failure, serious head injury to make way for camilla to marry"
6. Lets talk about the confusion in witness reports post crash: Initial reports claim that Diana was fine, and only appeared to have a broken leg. A sky news reporter recieved the official call stating that Dodi (Diana's spouse) had die, but Diana was fine and only suffered a concussion and a broken leg.
Reasons:
-Its no secret that Princess Diana was hated by the royal family. Prince Charles especially, as he wanted to marry Camilla before and after he married Diana.
-Princess Diana was pregnant with Dodi's child, the royal family couldnt accept that a Egyptian muslim would eventually be the step dad of the future king of England.
-Shortly before her death prince Phillip issued a threat against Diana after she stated that she wanted to seperate from Prince Charles.
-If she was to divorce/or seperate from the marraige, which she did, she immediately became a threat to the throne.
Coincidence? I think the fuck not.

I don’t see how anyone could fault her for being troubled or unfaithful knowing the full story. He was fully committed to a whole different woman for there entire relationship, everyone around them knew it and acted as if she was supposed to just accept it and get on as if nothing was wrong and continue being faithful in a loveless marriage where she was literally used as breeding stock & nothing more. She deserved so much more, and she absolutely does not deserve to be forgotten. She was the crowns biggest mistake & they deserve to be continually reminded & ashamed of it. It sucks that Charles was forced into the marriage, & I’m truly glad he’s with his true love now, but it’s no excuse for the way Diana was treated by him or many others in the royal family.
Interesting how Netflix rephrased some quotes to make it more appropriate for today's general perspective. They switched "thinking what a very jolly and amusing and attractive sixteen years old she was" with "...and Diana was still quite young then. She was very original and lots of fun ".

@@WorldsEliteBloodrang I am not in any way a royalist, but if you dig just a little deeper into the royal family history you'd find out that Charles is not that horrible piece of scum he has been portrayed to be. He was pushed into this marriage, and he was completely lost. He was an ambitious and imaginative person forced to be a borish, non-thinking future heir (that is why I think that monarchy should be abolished, since it doesn't benefit anybody but avid gossip seekers). You have to cut him some slack, he was undeniably horrible to her, and I do not condone his behaviour, but maybe he should just be put in perspective. Given that the monarchy is here to stay, I always believed Anne would have been more suited for the throne. She has a far stronger personality and integrity. Charles just wanted to lead a life with a purpose set by himself, and couldn't because of his birth!
I think The Crown’s portrayal of PC is pretty fair. He was miserable in his upbringing causing him to do what he did. A rather tragic character in his own right but doesn’t excuse all of his actions

She was not a perfect wife. Plus what kind of mother gives an interview where she tells how she tried to kill herself when she was pregnant with William. William had to hear that interview and know his mom tried to kill herself when pregnant with him. Talk about damaging your child....
Sherry Caraway he shouldn't have have married a 19yo idealistic girl while in love with another woman and then treated his wife so badly. Being in love with someone indifferent towards you and doing anything for their attention makes one a bit crazy, espescially a very young woman. She eventually grew to be a great woman who still had her share of demons. Princess Diana was a wonderful woman, fantastic mother- and had she been treated properly- a perfect wife.

You can't blame suicide attempts on another person. The suicide attempts are a manipulation used by mentally imbalanced people. They try to hold the other person hostage. They are basically saying if you don't do what I say I will kill myself. That behavior makes the other person love you even less and want to be around them less because it's a disgusting way to try to control someone. (Also they weren't real suicide attempts they were just manipulations) People who really want to kill themselves do so.
If my fiancé answered with "Well whatever love means really" I'd be completely devastated.

I believe Prince Charles "Liked" her, but didn't "love" her as she clearly loved him. I think he "maybe" was pushed by the royal family to get married.

However in Diana's case, she was engaged to Prince Charles...all eyes were on her (them), this was big news, the world was getting to know her & anxiously awaiting their fairytale wedding...combined w/ the fact that she was so young & naive...IMO she was probably taken off-guard by the comment as well as embarrassed & crushed. He was probably her 1st serious boyfriend! I can see why she, given the circumstances, may feel traumatized....just my opinion.

Actually it seems to me, because of her ironic glance at that very moment, that she's involved in this "comedy" at the same level as him.
Diana said she had said the "Whatever love means" comment previously, but they both felt it was too late to back out. They both felt they would be humiliated to back out of the wedding once announced.
