Dude, that intro!? How long did all that take? Massive props for having the patience to pull that off, especially when it’s a throwaway for the subject of the video. Highly entertaining.
I have always hid from doing environments and scenes because I lacked the basic understanding. I think it is time to go outside of my comfort zone and your videos have been the perfect prompt for me. Thanks
Man I am working on my portfolio for art school right now and your videos help me out so much! Its so much good condensed information in a short amount of time, i’ll be taking pages of notes from one video alone 😅 Keep it up :)
You know, I have been watching your videos for a while and today i decided to step a bit forward and congratulate you for your amazing content. I have been trying to learn for so long that sometimes feels like no progress or even that this progress is very chaotic and is just a coincidence that you get better... But your videos (well, and from other artists that i respect of course), are sooooo much help for self-taught people that there is no word in human elf or orc to describe how grateful I am. Thank you!
This is incredibly useful. First video that shows use of fundamentals in ways I can apply them to my work. So good going through things like this and refreshing my memory
That intro takes me back to Old YT (after 480p but before Talk Shows became popular - around 2010-14) when creators could just do non sequitur live action sketches which isn't common nowadays
I liked from the skillshare plug alone. Even though I have heard it a hundred times before I wanted to watch it all the way through. Moderndayjames, you are a legend.
Do you find information for these videos online exclusively or do you have a background in illustration or anything else. I've tried to find things on composition but i couldn't find anything that made me understand it the way i did with your video. I really want various sources of information but i just can't seem to find "useful" (for me) things.
There is also a really good book called Drawing and Composition for Visual Storytellers that I personally really like. You should maybe consider looking into that. I think it's only around $20-$25.
Hi James. Thanks for the video. Is there any Fundamental difference in starting a sketch in values whether in lines? Watching A Limonick's How to sketch anything I understood that the particular difference is in what you want to show. Whether it is mood with the values or details with the lines.
0:18 - '...PROUDCTION FACILITY'. Not sure if this is deliberate or a typo but I couldn't help noticing. Doesn't detract at all from these wonderful videos mind you, thank you very much for sharing your knowledge. I've been trying out that bridgeman/hampton hybrid method for constructing heads that you demoed in another tutorial. Finding it really odd at the moment but I think if I keep practicing it will come and be really useful. Got both of those books myself so don't really know why I hadn't thought of mix and match approach before, much appreciated.
Not yet, but I actually plan on doing a series based on storyboarding/shot composition. I want to finish up an animation im working on first, then break it down to show how the shot choices were done
this is a very serious channel and a very serious tutorial, you're probably just jealous you couldn't design a character as cool as roboJames. that shape language is unmatched
Hey. I love this video. I would love to learn more regarding composition. Do you have any book resources on the topic James? Or maybe someone here in the chat have some?
Hi Tobias, I plan on doing more on composition but in the meantime I'd check out a few resources: The Swatches Gumroad Ahmed Aldoori's Gumroad (both have videos on the topic) And Edgar Payne's Composition for Outdoor Painting
I believe they were all just from pinterest! I have a lot of thoughts on composition that I'd like to add to this series so that will come in a follow up soon enough
hey man thanx for answering , yeah i meant specifically if theres a process of "shape-finding" but in a modern manmade environment , because modern manmade stuff is rather limited compared to all the possible shapes of nature, i have a hard time doing anything else but 1 and 2 point perspectives with flat houses while i can draw cliffs n castles in the distnace pretty easily
Ha! A shout-out! Now I can die fulfilled. Thanks MDJ :)
hahahaha :'D LOVE YOU MAN
Marco, you are awesome and a rolmodel! :D

Thanks! I love making the intros, hopefully i'll have the time to do more soon
The video must have been edited to remove the intro?
@@americancheese7383 no intro sadge
@@americancheese7383 it was it was, I just wanted to streamline it for newcomers
@@moderndayjames what was it about? i got mildly confused seeing the comment and thought it was satire because there was none 😭😭
LOL that intro, reminds me of the first time I found your channel.
Whoa so much production value.
plot twist, Sinix is a programmed Moderndayjames
What You See ? You dare
I friggin knew it!
i didnt know i was getting myself into a whole plot with lore with this channel
That intro was fucking hilarious. Then it just cuts to a drawing tutorial XD
....what the fuck just happened?
Thanks!

wow thank you so much! Comments like these make the whole thing worth while, keep on learning my friend!
Based on your examples, shouldn't use some HL, vanishing points? 1,2,3? How can we draw if we do not have these?@@moderndayjames
this came up in my recommendations and i'm so confused, but more importantly, entertained
YES! Watch the Becoming a Gi/Even Amundsen series for more ridiculous channel lore :D
OMG this is a masterpiece, thank you for all the ModernDayJames out there!
The quality content I never knew I needed
You should check out Feng Zhu/Fzd school then
I LOVE HOW YOU MADE ME UNDERSTAND SOMETHING SO FAST!
They got Marco Bucci guys there 🤣👍 (following both of you)
This is incredibly useful. First video that shows use of fundamentals in ways I can apply them to my work. So good going through things like this and refreshing my memory
I constantly struggle with perspective, this helps simplify it in the best way possible.
Your explainations, like the drawings from different perspectives, are awesome! Thank you!

YES! Well we have a lot more planned so I hope you enjoy them :D
Is may be one of the most concise, precise and informative art technique tutorials I've ever seen. 🤩🤙
One of the best creators on RUclips!☺ Thank you MDJ!
I liked from the skillshare plug alone. Even though I have heard it a hundred times before I wanted to watch it all the way through. Moderndayjames, you are a legend.
A good way to get a simplified value scale and shapes when you are outside sketching is to squint your eyes to blur out all the detail
agreed! that can be a really effective way to see those groups of value
The best teacher on RUclips!
Helped a lot, thanks for the video!
The Les Enfants Terribles, but with Moderndayjames. Moderndayjames is Big Boss!
will you not do more composition series?
Man, that intro was awesome! I'd watch a short film on this for sure
🤣 lol that jazza bit cracked me up
Thank's for your video. Very interesting information and pleasant submission!
All the shameless name droppin’ this episode! Great video tho 😁
most awsome intro i´ve seen on a youtubevideo!!! So crazy cool!
that boardroom meeting lmao
YES, I WAS WAITING FOR THIS.
I hope one day all this is easy for me ....at the moment it's like a forien language. I'm trying to understand.
Is there a part 2?

Did you check the channel of mentioned Marco Bucci? He also has a nice '10 minutes to a better painting' series, touching that.
There is also a really good book called Drawing and Composition for Visual Storytellers that I personally really like. You should maybe consider looking into that. I think it's only around $20-$25.
You should check out Tyler Edlin on youtube. He has quite a few videos on composition and is an amazing digital artist, especially for environments.
Thanks for the tips on how to work thumbnails for these James.
what about 2 point perspective? just wondering
The meeting scene reminded me of Robocop. I half expected a moderndayjames clone to wreck havoc
"You have 20 seconds to complete the gesture"
this is so funny love this quality content hahahaha , thank you James :D
Omg this video has portuguese subtitles! Thanks for te atention w all of tour fans! Or to be better obrigado 😂
"that marco bucci guy" xD
excited for this series and more lore!
The plot he's building is a way to make you watch the videos in order so you understand them better
Perfection
Now that’s good spon. I’m so tired of hearing certain company names by now, but that really made me laugh.

Nice. Next it would be cool to explain color schemes, planes etc...so much to cover. Art is complex
I have to get a little more well versed in color before I tackle that, but I'm certainly working on it :D
@@moderndayjames I am sure u can handle it so do not be shy 😜
