I hate to add advice after to late, but the old days they always cut a 45* cut on the bottom of the siding 1x12 . It helped to keep the bottom of the board from rotting out. the angle made the water to run down to the tip of the cut instead of hanging on to a flat surface.
Thats a great suggestion, thanks for watching!
I don't understand. Is there a link to a video or website that I can reference?
no sense getting too accurate with those cuts if that wood isnt dry, she's gonna shrink up on you
Looks nice! Board and batten was actually created as a technique to install green lumber and not have it crack from drying after install. The technique involves installing the boards with as many as two nails and leaving a gap between the boards. The batten was installed over the gap with just one nail installed through the batten and in the gap into the frame of the building but not through the “boards”
This allowed the boards and batten to dry and shrink separately without putting stress on either creating cracks.
Looks like you butted your boards up against each other so your batten nails are probably going through batten and board so you might end up with some cracking and splitting as things dry and pull adjoining boards apart.
That’s good to now! I did Nail threw them but allowed a few weeks to dry
Very nice! I love the old style barn design, it gives it so much character!
One thing I will mention after rebuilding my old building with board and batten siding. When your fastening the boards it's better to put two nails in the center of the board instead of the outside edges. That will allow the board to expand and contract without cracking.
What's your plans for the siding going forward? Letting it gray naturally? We used a product called Cabot Timber Oil, it really gives it a rich wood look.
Pro Tip. if u cut to bottom in a 15-25 degree angel. So u have a sharp edge at the fornt. So the water can drop easy. this Wood last much longer
Great tip thanks
Bout to redo ours 😢 about 60yrs old give or take. Think plastic covers for posts to help prevent rot in the ground. That's issue rn it's just collapesing
That’s definitely a great upgrade for your post
@@ProjectDadLife expensive af tho
It’s a lot easier to get a bow out if you put the bow in and walk the bow out from one end to the other fastening as you go. Your horizontal gable door track board has siding butting it without any Zee channel flashing keeping water out. When you interrupt vertical siding with a horizontal piece the siding landing on it needs a flashing. You should also flash the siding tops under that board.
Incredible, I had nearly an identical barn planned out but havent pulled the trigger. Exact same outside dimensions, rough cut pine siding, monitor style barn. Any chance you could share your plans with me?
I can't get wood or metal prices like that, in our area. Within the city limits, metal roof is required to have lightening rods 2' tall every 10' ground with copper wire on both ends. I argued with them showing where metal roofs are proven in Florida to not encourage lightening strikes as any other roof material. I am not building to the cities standards code requirements or any building. Nothing but a small shed. 48" deep is required and rock in the hole with wet spots needing a pencil tip or frost heave will push them up. I had one fence post show me this problem after in ground 12 years, it lifted 5 inches. At 66, I am throwing the towel.
Circular saw works best for cutting the metal sheets. I noticed you are not going to box the end of the rafters. I’m building a barn with one section finished for my wife to have a craft area. I think I will box the rafter ends and won’t have to notch the rough lumber siding and just match it to the box. Wish I had a lift like you do. I have to build scaffolding to work off of. Good video.
Keep the videos coming! I just binge watched your whole barn build series. That is gonna be awesome when you’re finished.
Sadlf here in Germany ists not that easy. to built.
But i have a Woodmizer LT 40.
Best wishes Wolfgang
That’s gonna be a nice saw best of luck
I like the appearence of the Barn with wood siding a lot. The total to date shows what is possible cost wise if one works his butt off. Are you nailing only one side of battens to allow wood to move? Ray Stormont
Why would you nail both sides of a fresh sawn still green board? The whole board and batten system is designed so the wood boards can move with moisture by nailing only one side of each board.
What you have done by nailing both sides, especially wet, green wood, guarantees your boards are all going to crack.
Amazing job as always. Looking forward to the next episode.
Thanks for the support
It’s looking so good. Thanks for videoing your progress. I’m thinking to build a similar structure for a shop soon.
Thank you. That’ll be a nice shop
How do I block this channel?
Not my cup of tea
I hope you dont mind if i steal this design for my personal use 😎
Of course
Excellent job. That extra labor may showed up in your budget but in the long run it will be well worth it.
Yes sir it was most definitely worth it
Great job
I love it!
Thank you
That's looking very nice!
Thanks man
Question for you, would you caulk the joint behind the batten or sides of batten on a smaller barn project if you were concern with water entering?
I plan on doing what you have done for my pole barn, and may end up fully enclosing as a garage/shop so trying to limit water exposure. Also plan to house wrap it before putting up 1x12’s.
Wow, looks terrific! Did you consider putting steel siding just on the bottom 32” or 48” of the building? Im considering that or full board and batten like yours but not sure how the steel will look
Marinade it with ATF and red diesel, a few ounces if burnt motor oil for color.
Looking great. Never saw anyone try and arched fascia with metal roofing. I'm sure there is a way, not sure what that is. Interested in seeing the solution though.
I like the size of your barn and looking to do the same, can you point me in the direction of the plans you got so that we can build one out here in Colorado?
Awesome build sir.
Scoping out some ideas for pole barn of my own.
Here's a dream, building a pole barn that mice cannot get into.... I plan on building a pole shed 14x24 and I fight mice access day in and day out with the current 10x20 storage shed. I'm thankful for bucket traps! This looks great, it is giving me a lot of ideas on what I am looking to do....Thank you for vlogging this build!!
I've been thinking about doing a build where I used two 40 ft shipping containers on the sides with an open roof span between them.
I think your shipping containers are going to be your best bet for mice proofing. Those little bastards can get in an awful small hole unless you plan on securing your perimeter with a lot of steel wool and spray foam.
Awesome video :)
Awesomeness
Thank you

I would run it underground
Pine is not very rot resistant. Are you spraying a wood preservative on the outside?
