Now this is going to be helpful to watch! Just finishing up a deck build and I am hoping to start on a small 14x24 post and beam barn/tool shed. What I have in mind, you just confirmed the starting process. I wish my town building codes are as easy as yours, but my town has every finger in every blueberry in a blueberry pie.
Its nice to see posts not in the concrete. Saddles are the way to go!!!!
For sure a little tricky to keep straight while building but worth it
I am building a pole barn building to be used as a shop/storage building. I wish I had seen your video before I started.
Good luck with your build!
"Then the county will hopefully sign off on it." Nothing like begging permission to do something with YOUR money on YOUR land! I have the same heartburn about my county, too!
Lol right! It’s crazy how much control they have over something you own.
There are a lot of things about America that I discovered after 40 which completely destroyed my image as a patriotic American
It's not your land it's theirs and they want to make sure they get the most out of it should you not pay your rent/taxes
Permits here are thousands of dollars and they throw every roadblock in front of you they can to squeeze more out if you.
Best comment on the thread.
Looks like you follow Kyle from RR Buildings! Excited to follow the build!
Yes sir learned a ton from RR. Thanks man.
Don't pay any attention to Kyle it's Greg that runs that seriously I've learned so much and any questions I had Kyle has always answered look forward to your build series
Hell yea! I’m about to get on this in a rush before winter. 😂
Nice might be easier over the winter the heat here has really slowed me down
Going to be following along! hopefully we are going to be building ours later this year.
That’s Great! thanks for the support
charged you $400 to build on your own land... the king's tax
Yep! I think about that a lot. It’s mind blowing how we’ve got to this point.
Love this build! Also loved to see you getting that sonotube from my company!
I am building a pole barn very similar to the one are building. It would be helpful to describe the barn in some detail in this first episode so we know what you are trying to accomplish. I am using a concrete slab with metal roof and board and batten rough lumber. Hope to pick some tips watching your progress. Good luck.
Sheesh $400 for a barn permit. Not even a house or dwelling… that’s just ridiculous . And on top of property taxes
Right????
I have a fairly private property. I don't ask permission anymore I just find the best possible loopholes/plausible deniability and do/build what I want. (responsibly) we need to change our mindsets and act as a community.
what does your DIY boom lift look like up close?
Video coming soon
Thank goodness ya didnot put post in hole & concrete around post. 😊
Right!
total hogwash, I've pulled posts in concrete that have been in the ground for 30 plus years with no rot. Water is not what rots a treated post its the aerobic microbials in the first 6 to 8 inches of SOIL. Seen too many barns blown down by leaving posts on top of footers. A serious hinge point.
Tie a string line or small rope to your sling and you can just pull it down instead of grabbing a ladder next time
In this episode of Jack Reacher, he builds a barn.
😂My wife loved that comment
My county has newbie’s running the code office. Wow!
30 x 40 x 16 pole barn
Looking like your pretty much on par with what I’m trying to do for myself.
At 67y.o. It’s not a do it by myself job but looking like that’s the way it’s going to be.
Everyone my way wants to win the big lottery on you or sit on the couch and play video games.
No worries,
I ain’t afraid of a little work.
By the way $25/ these days seems to be chicken feed
I've never seen footers that are more narrow at the bottom. Isn't the whole point of a footer to be wider than what's above it, in order to spread out the weight per square inch?
Dont know if its an optical illusion but your poles look like they have large bow to them.
There’s actually one that bowed pretty decent when it dried. But also I’m using a go pro a lot so it might be the fish bowl effect also from the wide angle.
It’s definitely the lenses he’s using. Great eye for detail man!
Newbie here - Why did you use anchor brackets on 4 poles and sink the rest?
The power poles were a lot longer and will hold most of the weight
Pro tip from a crane operator...
If you tie a rope to the loop end of your choked strap, you can just give it a yank from the ground instead of setting up a lader on every post. Speed, safety, and efficiency all in one!
Thanks man I thought about that but didn’t know exactly how to tie it. You got a recommend knot for that?
I like to use a Bowlin knot, but as the old guys say, "If you can't tie a knot, tie a lot," lol.
Thanks for the tip! I’m actually hiring a crane for the roof install. I’m running engineered trusses my plan is to assemble all the trusses and purlins on the ground and lift it in position. Maybe in two sections 🤞🏻 any experience with that?
Yes, I've done lots of trusses, the operator should have long chains and make sure they bring a SPREADER BAR also when you put your chains on always make sure the back of the chain hook faces the middle of the load. The operator will show you if you're doing something wrong
Also, always use a tagline on one end of the truss so you can turn it from the ground and don't book on a windy day
Where I live there is no permit requirements for agricultural buildings…until you add electricity or plumbing, you need a permit for those but not the building…it’s weird.
Ours is kinda similar they really didn’t care to much.
You should have called the Amish people. 😂
I identify as Amish! 👍🏻
Learning a lot watching your videos, but i dont understand the wetset brackets, they look cheap and like they dont hold very well. They also dont have any cross members to keep them from pulling out, not to mention they are almost $100 each! Why not get a longer post and sleeve it for that price? Seems like the way to go in my opinion.
Concrete retains moisture and gives it strength. Wood rots with constant exposure to moisture. Wood below grade tends to rot and then you got a headache to solve
sir- i mean i guess its budget- but using 50-60k plus of machinery- ion know if thats budget friendly
You can rent machinery pretty affordably from Lowe's/home Depot
@@roflpill I mean I guess💀 definitely adds a lot more complexity though
lol, built a few buildings on top of that hard clay a few inches down, no fill dirt... have had no issues... rock then concrete ...
I agree we have some hard spots here in GA
you should of wrap those poles in ice n shield [roofing]
will be fine
Love that boom lift !
I'm pretty much on my own too.
Hopefully I can strap one on my mahindra, save on renting a lift !!!
You’re lucky … the township I live in wanted a “storm water management site plan” - which I had to get a civil engineer to draw out and it cost $2500
That’s expensive. I’ve heard of a few people having to do that.
But…will it be square 😂
It was about 1/8” off corner to corner
...what a lucky kid...
We have to full footings with 2" extruded polystyrene hard board 48" on the outside. This is $1,600 to get that far. It is best to compact the soil, then rock in lifts. Without wire mesh & rebar and 4" minimum concrete slab cracking will happen. I did a garage at my first house in half of the floor at a time using a 9 bag mix & 3,000lb test limestone or basically state highway mix. A hoist company will require 24" square footings 12" deep under the slab and they drill core samples to test strength otherwise they won't sell or install one if you decide to put one in. Used at auction, they run $1,500-$2,000 as the expense comes in the installation. I bought the house my wife wanted and never looked at the garage. My heart sank to find a small 1.5 car garage with a low ceiling. Stupid me making money and staying busy fixing cars until 9PM.
Do i need to add fill dirt and all that if i plan on doing concrete inthe future?
Looks great. We must have the same kind of coworkers, friends, family, church family. We’re the first person they call and no show when we need a little help. Be careful please. I saw Mama out with her apron on, good help is good to find. Good luck with your project sir. By the way what part of the world are you in? Thanks
We've had the same experience with all of our family, neighbors, churches, and friends.
good video. what state are you in?
Thanks! We're in Georgia
very nice. my cousin lives in northern georgia. i've been there only once and it's gorgeous compared to ohio. @@ProjectDadLife
Looks like a good start. I like the idea of putting the wood on top of concrete... seams when you concrete them in the ground, they will rot in 20 or 30 years maybe...
wrap your posts before putting them in the ground and they will outlive you, and your barn will be a hell of a lot stronger in a big wind. Why put posts on top of grade? Its cheaper and stronger just to pour a pad and stick frame it.
It doesnt seem like much concrete for this big of a building.
It’s a 8-9” -3’ deep hole with a 3-4” deep 12” circle on top filled with concrete. No formula really just twice the depth of my frost line. Fingered it was plenty for a barn
Is it better to do it this way than to stick the poles in the ground?
wrap your posts with a post protector and stick them in the ground in concrete, trust me, barns are much stronger that way. in a big straight line wind those brackets are a serious hinge point.
Could you go more into the boom lift set up ?
Did you contract someone to put your construction drawings together or did you buy the plans set?
First at your thirty five thousand dollar tractor. Lol.
It was 19k and financed through kubota for 5 yrs at 0%. It’s the best payment I’ve ever had👍🏻
@@ProjectDadLife Nothing against you having a good tractor. it's just frustrating when all the videos about homesteading and doing things yourself. Start out with thousands and thousands of dollars worth of equipment. To some people nineteen thousand dollars is a lot .
@ projectDadLife can you send me a link to your tractor?
@@ProjectDadLife can I have the information on what kind of tractor you have and where you finance it
Would you recommend this kind of tractor over a John Deere?
I hope you make a playlist for these. How long are these 6x6 posts?
Definitely there 16’
Good job. I always enjoy your construction builds, thank you and be safe.
Well thank you sir.
Gotta love a girl who can mix concrete!
you are not supposed to backfill with dirt, only gravel, per code. This is because you are only supposed to build on undisturbed dirt because otherwise the new dirt will settle.
I really appreciate you showing what worked (and what didn't!). Helps me a lot with our planning. Thanks!
Glad it was helpful! Thank you for the support!
@@ProjectDadLifedo you have any link to the plans you used for this build?
@@MegaTowboater @Mandor_Muda17
Hopefully, I can do a very similar build on my property next year. Gravel floor, on a budget. Great video man!
Thanks man
Nobody ever uses the next load of dirt to pack back and forth over the pad while loaded lol
Love your show! 1:13 I gotta get a Kibota. 😊
Thank you yes they are the best
I am interested in the tractor you were using. 2501. Was that the tractor you used to do all the work shown? I am looking to start a mini farm and I am just wondering if you like it and is it enough tractor? Thanks. Awesome build. Hope to build a simple barndominium in the future.
how old r u brother?
I’m 39 years young man!
Good video! Don’t understand the removal of the dirt ? Grandma’s barn stood on black dirt, built over 100 years ago. Stood just fine no problems with the foundation. A Tornado took the barn down
Watched this whole build and, WOW! I'm in love! Can you tell me where you got your blueprint plans?!?
How tall is the middle section 14ft?
How did you get the height of your footers established and all level?
I used a string with a bubble level.
Sweet n simple
Blessed I don't have to worry about no restrictions, permits or anything to worry about
Dream, build, repeat
Nice work! If there’s a will, there’s a way!
Absolutely! Thanks for watching!
On a budget......driving a 35k tractor!!!!
I have enough money in my retirement budget to rent one. But only 12 minutes!
I would rather have a $35 K tractor than a 35K car!!!😊
@brenm4894 I have a $25k tractor, and drive a $5000 truck. Priorities are set right! Hahaha
Good job. Very well explained
If anyone needs help building a pole barn let me know ! I’ve got a great crew , willing to travel anywhere in the USA ! We will fly to you, erect and finish or just erect it for you to finish . Price range starting at 65,000!
That’s a big budget.
Very helpful thank you
Glad it was helpful!
I will be following along as I'm in process of building my man cave/storage, 60x120x18. We just got all the rock pad done and will be pouring the piers late next week if the weather holds out, it has been so wet and super hot lately!
Awesome and welcome. Our concrete pier and standing the pole stage seems like it took forever. Now we’re moving right along. Best of luck with the weather
