aries spear is genius. hes hilarious and does great impressions. i never really heard him speak out side of his stand ups but this man can speak very well and has a great way with words.
In my opinion, Aries Spears was an extremely talented comedian on Mad TV who unfortunately, didn't advance any further in his career. Listening briefly to his numerous interviews on local media outlets gets me thinking that maybe his mouth shattered his career. "Keepin' it real" comes at a price in the corporate arena, especially in the entertainment world. And, knowing what to say, how to say it, when to say it and where to say it can have a positive or negative impact on someone's career.
I met Aries in Florida 10 years ago. Prior to that I was a fan but after I was a even bigger fan.Guy was down to Earth and full of positive energy. Good to see your doing well man...
Once Dave had his Comedy special on HBO or Showtime you knew for a fact he was gonna be a Star. A year or so later he had his own show the rest is history.
Lol as a black woman I knew all about Dave Chappelle...before his show! Now I have no idea where I first watched him tho. I do know it was way before 1/2 Baked.
To me Chappelle catered his humor more to whites that wanted to be comfortable listening to Black humor. I listened to Bernie Mac, Martin Lawrence, Earthquake. Really black comedians whose primary audience was black. Also, read my comment. I said I understand the Chapelle sentiment. I myself didn't know much about Chappelle. I don't speak for all Black Americans. What he says is not patently false if it applies to a wide swath if people, of which I happen to be a part. Possibly overstated, but not false
Mac Jeezy maybe you were but he means the overall black community. I remember watching half baked and it was hilarious but I wasn’t really hearing about his stand up like that from other black people. I’d hear about griffin, Chris Rock, Cedric, Steve Harvey, Chris tucker and others when they talked about black Stand up
Lol that was true what Aries said about John Amos. I looked at him as a strong, intimidating black father who didn't take no mess. I could definitely relate to what Aries was saying in relation to Mr. Amos.
....butttt wasnt the Martin show slapstick though? and if I dont recall...I remember some of what Aries was doing on madtv to not be all that deep and introspective either. Martin's show is pretty iconic....I get it...we all have opinions...but Martin was a great comical 90's show...all the 90's sitcoms had an element of corniness to them lol but we loved them.
not to mention all the people who diss martin ironically got they own shows and bit of all his concepts jamiefoxx show ,wayansbros, stev harvey show,etc.. they all stole from martin show in some way.
13:12 The Martin Lawrence episode when they were on vacation was one of the funniest things I ever saw. I know it was ridiculous with the stuffed animal, but I couldn't stop laughing.
Aries has some nerve. Martin did the same type of slapstick comedy that he did on Madtv. I think he's just jealous that Martin did it well enough to be called a legend all these years later and maybe Aries thinks he should be acknowledged the same way.
Im surprised he ever had enough money to be ordered to pay that much. If Eddie, Chappelle, and Rock are Charmin, then Aries is that cheap ass toilet paper they have in 7-11 restrooms.
pssh no They just need to think dynastically as in marry into the right family. Think of marriage as business not sex, you want sex go to Romania or Germany (in Brazil it might be a Tranny). Marry a woman who is on your level so if there is a divorce everyone gets paid
Aries always had steady income because of MadTV...hes part of the original cast and i guarantee he was clearing 100k or close to it a month before he left
I disagree with Aries about the Martin show though. It's a silly comedy. Of course he's gonna be fighting stuffed raccoons lol. I always get in my feelings when people to negatively about the Martin show, because that is literally the best sitcom ANY black comedian has ever starred in...besides the Cosby show.
He’s 100 percent right about his Dave Chapplle sentiment. Dave was known by few blacks from his appearances The Nutty Professor, Half Baked and Blue Streak but the black/urban community as a whole didn’t really get familiar with him until Chappelle Show. And that mainly because Chappelle Show was aimed and geared towards the urban/community, he played it safe with his earlier and more diverse work but Chappelle Show was really for US. It was just by chance it was loved and adored by the rest of mainstream America and that’s a testament on how much of a genius and icon Dave is. Dave honestly got one of the most prolific trajectories in comedy history, he went from the comic relief character, to comic superstar to exiled and disgraced martyr into arguably one of the greatest of all time who is beloved amongst his fans and peers alike. Dave had a hell of a career!
Facts I agree with everything you wrote we knew about half baked but everything else was him doing like background roles. Dave definitely had an amazing trajectory though fr
He's correct I didn't know about Dave Chappelle until the until the Chappelle show after watching the Chappelle show I started to notice that Dave had many movie credits under his belt great talent
I'm not a big fan of Martin's stand-ups, either... he was funny as a host on Def Jam... and the Martin show was insane... but his stand-ups never did it for me. I thought You So Crazy sucked.
I def agree. Martin was great doing characters, but his stand up wasnt that great. Definitely way short compared to Eddie Murphy, Chris Rock, Robin Harris, Keenan & Damon Wayans, Red Foxx or any of the other great black stand up comedians at the time.
to each his own but Martin specials were AMAZING to me except Run Tell Dat. hes the main reason i became a standup comic. his specials before def jam were unreal. and you so crazy changed my life. LITERALLY.
I was introduced to Chappelle in high school when his HBO special aired in 2000. Beyond hilarious and I became an immediate fan. Guess I was one of the "few" black folks that latched on before Chappelle's Show
I got familiar with Dave Chappelle from the nutty professor and blue streak which came out in 96 and 99, respectively but I didn’t figure out how funny and how much of genius he was until Chappelle Show. I knew his face but I didn’t really get into him until Chappelle show but I did like the little I did see from him in The Nutty Professor and Blue Streak, so when I found out he had his own show, I was locked in ever since.
Many black people knew Chappelle from Half-Baked & Men In Tights. I will say that Dave did get super big from the Chappelle show but his stand ups are out of this world. Dave's stand ups are maybe the best I've ever heard. His stand ups are so dangerous I can't listen to them at work or at night. I laugh so hard that I either wake people up or make them look at me like I'm crazy. Just look at Chappelle's stand ups versus anybody and see what I mean. The stand up where he was talking about Donald Sterling made my face hurt from laughing so loud. I was actually in pain and couldn't stop laughing. Not even Kevin Hart or Katt Williams was that funny. Some others like Bernie Mac made me laugh like that but no one now and Eddie Murphy was close but not there.
Chapelle always had a mixed audience since the early days. He was even doing Hollywood movies at 19. He was on Def Jam in the early 90's, did Nutty Professor with Eddie Murphy, got big with Half Baked, and then later did Chapelle show.
Aries is really speaking from his truth as far as art in goes. Like he said before comedy is like music movies tv shows or anything else to people-it’s subjective. It’s all on individuals as to what they prefer. And though it may seem like an abomination to speak ill of the Martin show b/c it’s so popular in the black community the truth is it didn’t resonate w/everyone.
Bill Burr is a fucking animal on stage... Hes my favorite comedian at the moment... If Bill isn't in your Top 5 best comedians you need to go watch a couple of his specials... He has definitely mastered his craft to legendary status.
Eddie Murphy will always be my favorite. I was a kid when Mr. Murphy came out. Before Eddie there was Richard Pryor and before Mr Pryor there was Redd Fox. Mr. Murphy was the Richard Pryor for me and my generation. I felt like he spoke for me and to me.
Aries does good impressions. I remember listening to the radio and hearing Jay z doing the most insane interview ever. Turns out it was Aries Spears dong J's voice. Hood stuff.
I'm one of the black people that liked him before, but he's telling the truth. to this day some people have never watched half baked but are "BIG" Dave Chappelle fans.

Aries Spears not acknowledging Martin Lawrence You So Crazy is ridiculous. And they're comparing Martin's sitcom work with Eddie's movie work. That's an poor comparison. I think if you want to go that route you'd have to look at Eddie's work on SNL.
Me and my cousin were instant Dave Chappelle fans when he did his 1999 standup in DC and it was available on VHS to watch. We used to watch that standup routine everyday so when he got his own show we watched his show. With that said, I still agree that black people didn’t hop on his bandwagon until his show took off.
Insinuating Chapelle wasn't 'black enough' by saying he wasn't 'known' by black people then is just straight up envy wrapped in a nice warm passive aggressive blanket. You can say the same about Patrice. The Office, Tough Crowd, even O&A. But no one says it about Patrice, I wonder why not.

Better than selling your soul. He's not real anyways, he gatekeeps too and defends the sellouts.
I appreciated Dave Chappelle 5 yrs before the show. When he did "Killing Me Softly" I knew he was one of the best.
He's right. there is a difference between being clever, funny and being able to induce deep soul laughter.
I totally agree with his top 4. The comics he mentioned are my favorites as well. And honestly, Aries gets slept on. He’s a beast on stage himself.
