1984 saw the long-awaited reunion of the classic Deep Purple Mark II line-up of Ritchie Blackmore, Ian Gillan, Roger Glover, Jon Lord and Ian Paice. It was the first time they had been together since 1973. They recorded a brand new studio album, "Perfect Strangers" and headed out on tour. This show was filmed in Melbourne, Australia and is the only full length concert film of the band at this time. It's a stunning concert with the band in incendiary form. The setlist mixes then new tracks from the "Perfect Strangers" album with favourites from the early seventies culminating in the brilliant "Smoke On The Water" finale. This is without doubt one of the finest Deep Purple concerts ever filmed and a must have for their legions of fans.

Saw this concert in 1984, first concert with a laser show. Jon Lords keyboard was on hinges and he rocked the hell out of that thing. The good old days when you could smoke and get high in the venue, and nobody cared.

the fluidity, ease and dexterity with which Ritchie handles his strat (oops, left out utter confidence) is magisterial, almost meditative to watch him play.
Saw this lineup at the Birmingham NEC in 1986, best concert I have ever seen.
Watched this concert tour in '84 @ the now defunct Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre, California.
Great memories!
And I'm gonna go see them again on Sept. 27th 2018 @ Five Point Amphitheatre, in Irvine California, 34 years later (with 4 or 5 other DP concerts in between).
i own this show on dvd. If you love Deep Purple, this show is a must have. This was a really good night for Deep Purple!!

Blackmore playing slide in such a unconventional way, standard tuning , low action, and cradling the slide instead of using a single finger, he improvises i think just to see if he can keep his self interested, maybe to see if he can get in trouble and find his way out, glorious
Blackmore was so cool. I looked at him as a guitar god when I was a young kid. now I see him playing that other genera of music and it feels like he just flushed his Legendary image right down the drain :( I miss that cool guitar player. but if it makes him happy and he is alive and well then I guess that is all that matters.

Absolutely the best Deep Purple line up EVER. without Gillen, Lord, Blackmore, Paice and Glover, it wasn't DP. With Coverdale and Hughes, it was 2nd but just not the same.

The best line up ever, but Coverdale and Co. Did good in their situation. Imagine singers like Coverdale, Brian Johnson of AC/DC, Sammy Hager in Van Halen, the drummer from the Who in the early 80's. They all had big shoes to fill. I wish this version of Purple would have stayed together.

Something about this video Ian Gillan I feel was at his best here.Its even interesting and entertaining to see Richie Blackmore and here play .I WAS a Blackmore fan years ago but I lost interest in his style.On the contrary I actually think his solo was a bit better than his usual.YES THE END SOLO WAS KINDA AWKWARD and hard to listen to....

I saw this tour in Tacoma in 1984-5 (?) And it was great except that Mr. Blackmore was in a bad mood and he performed absolutely no guitar solos that night... it was very strange.

Got the 2cd set with dvd included. Was better value than buying them separate. Worked out about £6.38 each off Amazon. Just a shame Jon Lord is so low in the mix (inaudible at times) as his playing on the PS album was really powerful (best he'd done in years).
Yeah Jon is low in the mix and its definitely guitar driven...something for the Ritchie fans!! I got the 2 cd/dvd too and great value. I am just hoping we get more releases. I have heard that Rainbow at Donington 1980 may get a release..hope so because Ritchie was totally on fire
Yeah when Blackmore was good, he was really good! Do you have the live in Munich 77 dvd from a few years back? It came with a minature tour programme replica which was a neat touch.
David Cook I do have the Munich DVD but not the CD. Fabulous Rainbow lineup and a real shame they didn't continue for a longer time but Ritchie wanted to be on the radio! hence the change in musical direction and writing...I think many people don't acknowledge Ritchie's cunning music brain in a business way..By the way did you see Purple in Australia back in '84?
Anthony Quinn Sorry a misunderstanding. I was just meaning it was good to see them (back) together not that I actually saw them then. I was only 10 when they reformed so seeing them at Knebworth the following year wouldn't have been possible anyway. However I do remember the reformation vividly (press reports, tv etc.) I first heard Purple's music in 1983 when I put on my big brother's 24 Carat Purple vinyl and have loved them ever since. Yeah Ritchie is an intelligent man and very business savy as you say.
I got into Purple around 1984 ( 11 yrs then ) I put my uncle's In Rock vinyl on my then modern record player and the music blew me away. I was hooked on them though my first Blackmore album was 'On Stage' a few months before my In Rock experience. I have been very fortunate to see Ritchie in both Purple ( 1993 Birmingham ) Rainbow ( 1995 Hammersmith ) and Blackmores Night ( 2011 York ). Extraordinary diverse talent the guy has and a real showman when he is on form lol...as you mentioned 24 carat I must dig it out and listen to it with all the crackles lol.

Sorry if I offend anyone, but THIS IS the best Deep Purple line-up. They made a very good album with Coverdale, Hughes, etc. But Gillan, Blackmore and Glover mixed with Paice and Lord is unbeatable. Blackmore is one of the best guitarists ever, bar none.

billzfan34 IMO, the best Purple. I know Blackmore is an asshole, but he IS Purple's guitarist. Im sure that Tommy Bolin was a great guitarist, like Steve Morse, but Blackmore is from another planet. His talent is just limitless. This is definitely one of my favorite songs by MK II

I'd disagree. Like most of the greats, Richie's sound is in his hands. If you could get several of them sitting around in a dark room passing around a single guitar you'd know who was playing at any given time by their individual sound. Electric or acoustic, wouldn't make any difference, you'd know who it was rather quickly.

Anyone who thinks this is Purple at its best is kidding themselves. Gillan's voice is gone from smoking and drinking, as well as surgery for nodules, Ritchie is playing for the money by his own admission and his performance is less than disciplined: weird notes that sound out of tune with the band, and you can hardly hear Jon.
People who think this is Purple at its best are people who never saw them in the 70's, or people who are blinded by rose- tinted nostalgia.
Two million dollars a man is a lot of motivation, it's a shame they came to this.

Purple with Gillan and Glover in the '70's were the definitive lineup, however I prefer them with Coverdale and Hughes, with either Blackmore or Bolin on guitar.
Tommy Bolin wasn't always at his best, but he was a brilliant musician.

No auto tune here kiddies. I was 17 when Deep Purple came back around in 83 and 84...and it was something else. Just 4 guys jamming the f out.
I waited almost 9 years for DEEP PURPLE to release an album and tour.I was 14 when Perfect Strangers came out and when they played Long Beach Sports Arena,I was there!Like the man said,No Fucking Auto Tune,just their instruments and their God given talent.Never forget that night,hearing Purple live for the first time,and Ian Gillan still had the pipes,one of rock and rolls best vocalists ever!

Damn!! Best live version of 'Knocking At Your Backdoor' I've ever heard. Blackmore's thunderous tone was unbelievable considering this was 1983! This is that phantom 'tone' most guitarists are STILL chasing 37+ years later........ in 2020! LOL!

Ritchie’s tone on the chorus is amazing. It sounds like the guitar is on fire 🔥. The way he plays it is uniquely Blackmore. I still get chills up my spine when I hear this, even after all these years.
