  • Quimera is the most intense roller coaster I have ever ridden. Located at La Feria de Chapultepec in Mexico City, Quimera is currently in the process of being removed piece by piece. Indiana Beach announced on 11/24/2020 that they would be adding a relocated Schwarzkopf triple looper for the 2021 season and it's strongly suspected to be Quimera.

    I rode this last Thursday for Media Day at Indiana Beach... This is the most intense coaster I have been on. I don't really grey out... yeah that double loop.... I GREYED OUT! I thought I was about to black out... That third loop I didn't find as intense as you did. To me the two drops followed by the double loops is insane. It was a real challenge back then to take a ride on this one for a child. I decided to take a ride on the Himalaya Bahn, which is still in Germany as a traveling roller coaster. 1988 was unfortunately the last year at the Oktoberfest for the Dreier Looping, as the Olympia Looping followed in 1989. I briefly touched upon my experience in my other comment thread, but now that it’s been a week and a half since I rode this crazy thing, the experience is still fresh in my head, so I thought I’d go a little more in depth about my experience.
    A buddy of mine summed up the coaster in the best way possible, he called it a “Rated R Coaster”, which I couldn’t have said it better myself, the ride is violent in the best way possible. It’s one of the most intense roller coasters I’ve ridden, I don’t typically gray out on coasters. In fact of the nearly 100 coasters I’ve ridden, only 4 have caused me to lose my vision, Millennium Force (the pullout of the first drop), Batman at SFGAM, Kumba, and now this. It’s not rough at all, it’s just that the transitions are so tight (they have to be, it’s a compact traveling coaster) that your head is naturally gonna be thrown from side to side. I love this ride, it’s far and away the best coaster at Indiana Beach, and it’s the best steel coaster in the state of Indiana (which there isn’t much competition, but it’s competing with a B&M). I think it is a welcomed addition to my home park.
    I’m so glad I was able to ride this 3 times on the 11th. If you would’ve told me from 4 years ago that I’d be riding Quimera (as it was called at the time) at my home park, I’d call you crazy, especially considering the fact that the park was getting ready to close permanently. But 4 years later that became a reality, and it was well worth the long wait.

    Informative, great review that helped me hone my own impressions of the coaster a little more.
    I first hit this park on my second day in Mexico City, so I had already adjusted to the altitude. Also, I was there in Spring of 2019, not in the intense summer heat. Probably for these reasons, I was able to marathon this coaster on both of the days I ended up visiting the park. Marathoning it was physically intense, but no worse than, say, marathoning Voyage, which is also physically demanding. I got about fifteen rides over two non-consecutive days.
    You’re right about the lack of trims being what makes it feel wild and crazy. For me the most intense moment was one you didn’t emphasize: that steep banked drop. It threw me around in such a weird and unnerving way!
    Also, the restraints were an absolutely comical apparatus. It took two or three rides just for me to develop my skills in successfully getting into it, and then successfully figuring out how to fasten it across the chest, and then managing to pull them together enough to do so. It was weird that I felt I had to develop these “skills,” but that’s what it felt like. And every time I sat down it felt like a race to accomplish the fastening of the restraints before the ops got to me. Lol.
    It was a fun coaster, and I hope that it can be saved in some way, though I doubt it will.
    Btw, maybe you don’t care, but fwiw the stress in “Feria” is on the first syllable, and the stress in “Chapultepec” is on the second syllable.

    • @CanobieCoaster
      @CanobieCoaster  4 года назад +1

      I rode Quimera on my second day in Mexico City, but the altitude was bothering me more on day 2. I agree those restraints are a comedy of errors and it's doubtful the coaster ever runs again and if it does, it likely won't run like it did in its final years.
      As for the pronunciation, Spanish was never my strong suit haha.

    • @StamfordBridge
      @StamfordBridge 4 года назад +1

      Canobie Coaster I took “AltitudeRX” leading up to the trip. I don’t know if it made a difference, but I will say that whenever I’ve gone backpacking at 7K feet or higher, I usually feel it very strongly on the first day, but on this MX trip I had just the slightest out-of-breath feeling on the first afternoon and that was it. I’ll be taking AltitudeRX again for any similar trip!
      As for the pronunciation, it’s standard in Spanish that unless otherwise accented the stress is always on the penultimate syllable, so your instinct on both words was sound! It just so happens these are weird words.

    • @CanobieCoaster
      @CanobieCoaster  4 года назад

    The ride didn’t trim in the past. The sound of the brakes was mostly just the blocks setting with each passing train. The first block brake isn’t taken at a speed requiring trimming, and would hardly affect the ride if it did.
    The booster lift runs far faster than it did in Germany, as I just learned. It be faster here than it used to be but La Féria wasn’t the culprit. It ran very fast as Magnum Force as well. It came to Mexico with the booster lift already altered. This would significantly increase the speed at the end.
    The third brake section could have trimmed but being the end of the ride you’ve already navigated the most forceful sections and it’s of little consequence from a maintenance standpoint to slow it down.
    My take on the ride running so fast is that they likely used a wheel compound that wasn’t correct for the ride. It probably had harder wheels and maintained more speed than designed. The booster lift clearly runs far faster than footage of it in Germany but again, it ran this way at Flamingoland too. The constant notion that trims should have tamed the ride (which they never did historically) really doesn’t make sense.

    • @CanobieCoaster
      @CanobieCoaster  3 года назад +1

      I didn't realize the booster lift was faster since I've never seen a POV of this coaster from its days in Germany, but that definitely would cause a speed increase too.
      I agree it ran fast as Magnum Force as well, but in those POVs I could at least here trims tapping. They aren't even there on Quimera.

    • @AdamSmith-gs2dv
      @AdamSmith-gs2dv 2 года назад

      @@CanobieCoaster My theory is a modification of that. I think La Feria bypassed the resistor that controls how much power goes to the lift. Normally what's supposed to happen is a sensor picks up how fast the train is traveling, sends that information to the rides computer, and then the rides computer does a calculation to figure out exactly how much voltage needs to be let out of the resistor to power the wheels at a certain rate to keep the train within an acceptable speed range. When you bypass the resistor and run direct power to the middle lift those wheels will run full blast which basically converts that booster lift into a launch. It's basically the same situation that happens when your blower motor resistor fails in your car, you can still use the fan but you can only have it off or on at full blast there is no inbetween.

    This ride never ran trimmed. The main culprit for the faster second half is that booster lift in the middle of the ride. Its supposed to moderate the speed of the train when it exits but La Feria ran into issues with the control system and instead of fixing them they just bypassed them by running direct power to the booster lift and only running one train. By running direct power to the booster lift it caused the lift to run at full speed all the time and instead of moderating the speed of the train it became a tire propelled launch which is why the second half was so insane. In fact if you watch videos of the ride as Magnum Force you can see the train actually slows down on the lift while in the Quimera videos you see the train launched over that hill. It's basically what happens when your cars blower motor resistor fails, you can still use the fan but you can only run it at the max speed

    Crystal Beach's Cyclone safety coaster gave riders an abusive experience to say the least . "Safety" referring to the trains staying on the tracks - but that's all !

      The coaster that replaced the Cyclone is one of the most beautiful coasters I have ever seen. a
      As a teen my family vacationed in Ontario in the sixties . The Comet stretched out along the retaining wall of Lake Erie . The older gentleman that operated the coaster told me he could control the speed of the trains by raising or lowering the teeth located at the curves . It offered an impressive profile from the midway and the Lake Erie shore . I believe that most of the course was outlined in white lights.

      @@rutheliz75 Comet was an incredible, wonderful coaster, one of my favorite wood coaster in the mid 80s...and still! You do know it was saved, disassembled, and re-built at Great Escape Fun Park in Lake George, NY, don't you? Many who rode both say it runs a bit better than at Crystal Beach, but it also has had a few, minor alterations over the years. Everyone who rides Comet in NY says it's so much fun. Crystal Beach was like a magical, beautiful step back into time, and Giant Coaster was a really fun coaster, too! Loved the Magic Carpet ride also. The only thing Comet lacks now is that spectacular view of Lake Ontario!

    I went to the ACE con in 1985 at Blackpool & their two week European coaster tour which included Drier Looping/Quimera. This is the most intense steel coaster I've ever ridden. Our ACE tour guides arranged an hour of exclusive ride time! Nearly every enthusiast would take one or two rides and quit! Not me! I got around 25 rides. Our guides also kept riding as they felt bad that the fair gave us ERT but few would ride! I agree with everything Canobie Coaster says in this excellent video. It's my all-time favorite steel coaster. The tall, steeply twisting airtime & lateral drops were unreal. The bottoms of those drops, and the loops, were almost unbearable. But a FUN unbearable! Canobie Coaster, did you enjoy the ride? One of the best things about it in Germany was having only a single lap bar! It's almost hard to believe it'll be operating at Indiana Beach! I will be there when it opens. Enthusiasts dismiss my praise when I talk about this coaster being the ultimate in steel! I hope it runs well in Indiana & that Indiana Beach comes up with a comfortable restraint or switches back to the single lap bars. This is the ultimate in steel roller coasters! Get on down to Indiana Beach when this coaster takes us by storm!

      I wish I could've experienced this with just lap bars. That's encouraging it was about as intense in Europe before it came to North America.
