    Thank you for the video, you make the most sence in harvesting seeds and planting . I'm 74 always been gardening but always thought dahlias were for expert's it's the first time I planted seeds this season from a packet of seeds and was over the moon when they all came up and weathered all our storms this year . Going into autumn now in south africa and I want to collect the seeds from them but with all the rain at the moment the heads are wet, so this morning I'm going out and cutting them off and trying your method it makes the most sence to me . A big thank you .

    Maybe you could use egg box cut-out "cups" placed in your "propagator" ? They should come out cleanly enough after a week or so to transplant the seedlngs without disturbing their roots ?

    My first batch I used multipurpose compost and they all died of damping off. Poor choice of too heavy compost and generous watering. So I scrapped them and started again. I got 90% germination in 48 hours and 100% within 5 days using a peat free compost and added vermiculite mix, kept in a warm, light room. Moved to a cooler room so they don't get leggy. Always learn from mistakes and try, try, try again.

    For the last few months I've been using any plastic food tray I get with my shopping . If it doesn't have holes in the bottom or only a few I heat up on my gas cooker an old drill bit and make extra holes for drainage .be extra careful that it doesn't get too hot to hold though as you can burn yourself if you're not careful..I did try drilling holes but surfaces are too slippery. It doesn't take long to do it this way either. I also repurpose old toilet rolls and tablet boxes for seeds. You can transplant straight into the soil then without disturbing the roots.

    • @chrisw1090
      @chrisw1090 2 года назад

      Like you I use toilet rolls for sweet peas it gives them a better root system, I think they would do even better with kitchen rolls

    • @ProjectDiaries
      @ProjectDiaries  7 лет назад +1

      100% they'll need at least 6 hours of sunlight per day once they sprout otherwise they'll go very leggy

    Hi, thank you for an excellent video. My germination-rate from seed is about 30%, which is still ok, considering the seeds are in abundance every year. Do you have any tips of getting a higher germination-rate?

    • @katharina...
      @katharina... 4 года назад +6

      Right, my germination rate is very high, so let's compare notes. I sow them on plastic trays in compost mixed with some vermiculite. I only just cover the seeds, and sometimes when I water them they get slightly exposed, but I leave them be. Apparently they don't like to be buried in soil, they just need some light sprinkling of he soil. My seeds consistently germinate within 3-5 days.

    • @katharina...
      @katharina... 4 года назад +1

      Dahlias germinate very quickly and easily and at this time of the year they really don't need to be covered. I'm in Ireland and they have been germinating for me within 3 days and they, are growing so quickly once they germinate too! If you want to keep the aluminium foil on, just make sure to check up on the seedlings every day, and take the foil off completely once the seedlings appear. All the best!
