  • Trials Manager Lindsay shows how to easily start dahlias from seed by either sowing seeds directly into the garden (mild climates) or starting seeds early indoors for later garden transplant (cold winter climates). She shows you exactly how to use both methods and then how to prepare your planting bed and care for young dahlias in the garden.

    So nice to see Renee sponsored videos! I’m a Santa Cruz mountain native and love showing support for such a wonderful local company! Keep these videos coming. I’d love as much content as you have time and desire to make! Please show us around the Felton test garden. My secret desire is to volunteer helping at the garden, I need visuals for my plant nerd fantasy. 😂❤❤❤

    Just found you. Thank you for sharing your method of growing Dahlias from seed! It was very helpful; and the fact that you went from start to finish was really helpful. They're so beautiful! I planted my seeds indoors and for some reason they didn't germinate. Trying again next week.

    Thanks! This will be my first experience with Dahlias. The pkg says Unwin Dwarf and there’s a Rainbow Mix, but the directions say to plant at only 1/4” deep. I suppose 1/2” and 1/4” aren’t that much different and it is a bit if a guess anyway when plunging my finger into the soil?

    How long from seed to planting in the ground? I started about 15 seeds earlier this month and I only have one that germinated. First true leaf is making an appearance. Dump the others and start over?

      It's more cost effective to buy packs of seeds as opposed to tubers.
      For me personally, I harvest the seeds from dahlias I've previously grown and then resow them the following year and its always a surprise as to what the flowers will turn out like, which is good thing in my eyes.
      If however you want a particular type of dahlia and a good chance of success then buying tubers would be best option.
      I bought a packet of mixed Dahlias seeds about 8 years ago. Haven't bought any since and every year I sow more.
      I never lift my tubers come winter and so a lot die off and never return. I think however if I get some this year I really like I will try storing the tubers over winter. Sorry for long comment. 😂 hope that helps!

    I can't find anything called "compost" at garden centers like HD or Lowes anymore. Don't know why, they did have those bags of compost even three or four years ago. I don't compost on my own, so what are you saying when you say to use compost? I can find composted manure, straight manure, "garden soil." but not the word compost

    Why would you not just plant up the ones you pulled up??? Seems such a waste. I think I could never do that! Poor little plant baby, it wasn’t the biggest so it didn’t deserve to live! 😪

    • @uncoiledpeak
      @uncoiledpeak Год назад +5

      This is a common practice for all plants growing from seed. Growing multiple seeds insures you have a higher probability that one will grow. So, essentially thinning out is not a waste, it’s an assurance of a higher percentage or closer to 100% success that one will survive and be stronger.

    • @bbbean

      Weaker seedlings produce weaker plants so its better to leave the stronger ones to produce genetically hardier/more vigorous plants
