- Trials Manager Lindsay shows how to easily start dahlias from seed by either sowing seeds directly into the garden (mild climates) or starting seeds early indoors for later garden transplant (cold winter climates). She shows you exactly how to use both methods and then how to prepare your planting bed and care for young dahlias in the garden.
I'm growing dahlias from seed for the first time. They are starting to get their first true leaves, and I needed more guidance. This video was perfect, and I loved seeing all the finished steps. Thanks!
love he fact that you actually show us the finish product , great job!
Thank you for a great detailed video! I think I'm ready to grow Dahlias from seed!
So nice to see Renee sponsored videos! I’m a Santa Cruz mountain native and love showing support for such a wonderful local company! Keep these videos coming. I’d love as much content as you have time and desire to make! Please show us around the Felton test garden. My secret desire is to volunteer helping at the garden, I need visuals for my plant nerd fantasy. 😂❤❤❤
We get a lot of requests for a trial garden tour video. Thanks for the reminder!
This was such a helpful video! I'm about to wintersow some Dahlia and snapdragon seeds.
Just found you. Thank you for sharing your method of growing Dahlias from seed! It was very helpful; and the fact that you went from start to finish was really helpful. They're so beautiful! I planted my seeds indoors and for some reason they didn't germinate. Trying again next week.
Came to say that, I also just found her channel! ❤
@@copicgirl8057 some other ones to follow is Sarah from Bloom and Gray; she does amazing arrangements. Different from anyone here in the states. Also Nicole from Flower Hill Farm. If you like big personalities; she's the one to see :)
So excited to try! Thanks for the details ❤
Excellent video!
Just sowed 100 in seed trays. Fingers crossed 😂
Very nice beautiful....this is the best of what the Internet was meant to be
This was so helpful. I love how you explain and demonstrate. Thank you!

Love this! ❤❤❤
Just ordered both of these dalyas seed packets and both of the strawberry seeds that you have this morning thank you
super helpful thank you!
Beautiful thanks for sharing
Great video. Thanks so much for your knowledge. 🙏
Thank you Mrs. Collected my first ever Dahliaseeds this autumn and was wondering, if I could sow them next spring......
I understand the importance of thinning. It just kills me, though. 😂 I always have to find a new spot to plant the ones I so ruthlessly ripped out. 😬😬😬
Very nice video. Easy to understand, and thorough.
The strawberry baskets are a great idea. I'll have to try that. Thank you.
nice practical and simple methods, great video, explained well, I look forward to growing my dahlias here in north queensland, australia, kev
That was very helpful ❤ thank you ❤
Love the video. Great tip with the baskets!
Thanks for the video! It's very informative👍
Love the idea of the baskets. Planted sunflowers and rabbits eat all the tops … done
Great info, thanks.
Great idea with the strawberry baskets I lose a lot of seedlings to Robbins and rabbits
excellent videos, where do you get your seeds, all the seeds I gotten dont germinate??
Thank you
After the plant matures does it create tubers or is this a different species of Dahlia?
Great video. Do you pinch your baby dahlias and when.
@terributler215
Usually around 12-15 in
Thank you for the video, is so informative. My seeds dahlias don’t like nothing like yours. I love I. CA zone 9b. I stated them about a month ago, the sprouting, but they don’t look like yours. I might be thinking the seeds are from other plant.
Thanks! This will be my first experience with Dahlias. The pkg says Unwin Dwarf and there’s a Rainbow Mix, but the directions say to plant at only 1/4” deep. I suppose 1/2” and 1/4” aren’t that much different and it is a bit if a guess anyway when plunging my finger into the soil?
Would like to have some of those little baskets, where to find them? I have a problem with snails eating them very early mornings, that would help to keep them out... your little doggie is so cute following you around.
How long from seed to planting in the ground? I started about 15 seeds earlier this month and I only have one that germinated. First true leaf is making an appearance. Dump the others and start over?
Subscribed. Excellent video and editing. What are the benefits from growing from seeds vs tubers? Aside from the amount of seeds
It's more cost effective to buy packs of seeds as opposed to tubers.
For me personally, I harvest the seeds from dahlias I've previously grown and then resow them the following year and its always a surprise as to what the flowers will turn out like, which is good thing in my eyes.
If however you want a particular type of dahlia and a good chance of success then buying tubers would be best option.
I bought a packet of mixed Dahlias seeds about 8 years ago. Haven't bought any since and every year I sow more.
I never lift my tubers come winter and so a lot die off and never return. I think however if I get some this year I really like I will try storing the tubers over winter. Sorry for long comment. 😂 hope that helps!
So helpful and exactly what I needed as a first time Dahlia grower!! Thanks so much 🫶🏾
How long do they take to have bulbs and flower
Three months before they bloom.
how long between the plantings? is it 6 weeks for each time? So it takes 3 months to get into the ground?
how tall do the Dahlias get that you directly sowed?
Did you pinch the seedlings at any point before they went to the garden?
If i started my seeds late , can i skip the larger pot and put them into the garden once they’ve sprouted?
I'm new here and I want to plant some Dhalias, I am from Florida, do you think the weather is nice ? I was thinking to let them grown in pots in my balcony, it has a lot of sun.
Will these grow in zone 9a Houston, Texas?
Hi Renee, where do you recommend buying dahlia seeds ? Thanks
I bought my seeds from BOTANICAL INTERESTS
May I ask what zone are you growing in? Thank you.😊
how long from seed to first bloom?
When is the best time to start dahlia seeds?
Which seed company was that
0:24 my dahlia is not growing as much as others I have in another garden
I can't find anything called "compost" at garden centers like HD or Lowes anymore. Don't know why, they did have those bags of compost even three or four years ago. I don't compost on my own, so what are you saying when you say to use compost? I can find composted manure, straight manure, "garden soil." but not the word compost
What zone are you?
Like like❤
also is it true when dahlias are grown from seed that you never know what your going to get?
That’s true! You basically will create a totally unique flower!
Wow those look just like zinnia seeds 😮
My dahlias die once I repotted . Not sure why?
Why would you not just plant up the ones you pulled up??? Seems such a waste. I think I could never do that! Poor little plant baby, it wasn’t the biggest so it didn’t deserve to live! 😪
This is a common practice for all plants growing from seed. Growing multiple seeds insures you have a higher probability that one will grow. So, essentially thinning out is not a waste, it’s an assurance of a higher percentage or closer to 100% success that one will survive and be stronger.
Weaker seedlings produce weaker plants so its better to leave the stronger ones to produce genetically hardier/more vigorous plants
🥴
You can plant them up, no problem. I plant up all of my seedlings, unless it's obvious they have issues. But I try not to oversow that much either.
