Interesting. I bought a set of real touch markers a while back cause someone recommended them for panel lining but I found Tamiya accent color works better for that, so I had these laying around for some time now. This weathering technique looks easy enough. Might give it a go.
before applying the marker , the top coat provides a rough surface to let the paint stick well the the surface, some plastic kit surface is too smooth to apply paint on it. top coat after applied marker will protect the paint and make the it look better
It almost feels like just tracing the edges and rubbing it would look good on its own on a full kit. On your first piece it looked really nice

yes, the different is in computer or in actual , adding weathering effect make it look more reality

real touch marker cannot work on black or very dark color, I suggest to use vallejo desert dust , it looks great

this marker is water base, may be few hours
