    You'd be surprised how many people don't actually look at the gcode before printing. Slic3r has a great layer preview mode, extremely useful for catching mistakes early. If you want to see line-by-line execution, I generally throw it into gcode.ws, it'll allow you to see the order a layer is printed. Gcode.ws also gives a pretty accurate estimated print time, and amount of filament used.

    Angus your videos are a great resource. I had made a little statue for my parents dog who had recently passed away with help from a previous video. The print failed horribly because the slicer didn't grab the ears for support. I glanced at the g-code preview and thought it was good enough. After it failed I really looked at it and noticed that there wasn't any supports on the ears. No matter what I tried I couldn't get the ears to be supported. I remembered one of your videos talked about a slicer that you could manually put in supports. Off to RUclips I went looking for that video. I found it and purchased Simplfy3D. I used your videos for a crash course on how to use it and the print turned out great. That was two months ago. I immediately subscribed to your channel after the print turned out great. The price for Simplify3D was well worth it seeing how happy my parents were when I gave them the statue. Thanks for the great videos.

    I actually just yesterday stopped a print from printing an overhang without any solid bottom layers. I had selected multiple processes and had started the final one at the wrong location and would have ended up with a large hole. Seriously, simplify3d is worth every penny, the preview is amazingly helpful.

      Agreed. Please keep the S3D tutorials coming. I bought my first 3D printer used from an experienced 3D printer user who highly recommended S3D and gave me his S3D settings for that printer. I have two other 3D printers now and S3D has worked great for them as well. I have never had any reason to try any other slicer. I feel that most commercial software that I buy is overpriced for what I receive in a majority of cases but S3D earns its keep.

    2 things that keep me awake:
    1) Does the/a Printer take into account for Shrinkage?
    2) Does the Printer take into account the Opening of the Print Output?
    I am new to the needs of designing for a 3D printer.
    I have read 2 books (for beginners) and neither touched on this, and I have alsi watched countless RUclips videos as well, and again, No, Nothing about any printer taking these 2 things into consideration.
    For my designs, I must know what the Abilities/Limits are for the material is as well as for the Printer.
    I am going to start out with some easy projects, but I have big expectations for the tools that I use.

    Thanks for recommending Simplify3D to me in one of your Q&A sessions. It has been a GREAT INVESTMENT that has saved me a lot of frustration. Previewing Gcode and the ability to manually increase of degrease support materials is awesome in Simplify3D. One area that I could use some help in is the settings for the support material. Specifically finding that sweet spot where the support comes away more easily. I was jealous of how easy it was for you to remove the support in this video. I have reduced the Upper and Lower Vertical Separation Layers to 1, to help support curved surfaces better, but now find that the support is MUCH more difficult to remove. Perhaps the temp is too high? If you could do a video about tweaking the support settings, that would be great! Thanks! Never Let The Machines Win

    Very interesting video, I loved the time lapse. I learnt to always keep an eye on the print after I left it for 6 hours and came back to the extruder completely covered in filament, like a massive block of it hardened on.

    I was wondering bout ABS filament and the colours and how it affects
    prints. I see a lot of ppl saying this colour is better than that
    colour and this one prints at a higher temp because of the pigment. As I
    paint most of my prints I was wondering if a neutral colour or
    transparent is the way to go because of the lack of pigment.

    Thanks for the great vids! It would be great to see something on getting as accurate as possible prints. When print calibration cubes or other dimensional parts, I get slightly different scaling in the X, Y and Z directions. The difference between X & Y was surprising. I use the scale function in openSCAD to deal with this, but are there ways to adjust the process settings in Simplify3D so that they can be specific to materials?

    Not a fan of these borderline ads for S3D, gcode preview is a feature of most slicers (slic3r, cura etc have it) implying it's somehow exclusive to S3D is disingenuous.

    • @maxrainer8553
      @maxrainer8553 8 лет назад +2

      and, i think slic3r even does a better job showing you the output gcode, and i think it is really awful to use any other slicer, bacause it is just the program i always used at home

    • @MrRedwires
      @MrRedwires 8 лет назад +1

      Agreeing with you here.
      The focus solely on S3D and basically leaving out any other free alternative is something rather upsetting in my regard.
      Especially since Slic3r has many of the tools necessary for normal use.
      I mean, it even has Modifier Parts to change settings locally, which is very similar to the S3D Tasks.

    • @nicanorsantillan1883
      @nicanorsantillan1883 8 лет назад +2

      There's a reason why most youtubers use S3D, it simply works best. Not software-wise, but end results gives a better print quality.
      Also these tutorials can be easily translated to other programs if they have similar features. Hard to teach a general tutorial for 12 different programs; the teacher will use his favored tool as it is the easiest to teach with as they're most comfortable with using said program.

    • @KriLL325783
      @KriLL325783 8 лет назад +2

      No they use it because they got it for free, and he claimed these are S3D specific features other slicers don't have.

    • @MrRedwires
      @MrRedwires 8 лет назад

      Nicanor Santillan
      Well, that may be true, but since the goal of a tutorial is to teach people something, it would only make sense to do this in a software that almost everyone has available to them - Not something that only some people want to buy.
      Besides, did you ever see a test of the quality of parts compared between different slicers?
      Sure S3D can handle some situations better, but this does not mean that its general print quality is better enough to justify 150€ extra.

    My dual extrusion models where I merge two models together (1 for each extruder) always get confused after the first layer. It is a single nozzle to heat with 2 extruders which Cura doesn't seem to understand. I set them both to 195 degrees but after the first layer, for some reason the temp goes to 180 while it pauses, then it heats back up, then homes itself, pauses, and then continues with the print.

    Whats with you people claiming hes trying to sell you something? He uses Simpify3D, not because it was free or because he gets paid to push it, but because its the best. He clearly says in the description that he will show you how to do it in Simplify!? If he wanted to do a tutorial on how to use G code in another program he would have labeled it as such. You also had the knowledge that it was done in Simplify and could have chose to simply not watch it if you've got a problem with that software. He does videos on UP printers, I generally don't watch them because I will never own an UP! How did he imply it was exclusive to Simplify? Hes done several videos about other slicers, one even comparing them and the prints they produce. Its $150?!, not like you're buying Solidworks or something, drama queens.

    Hi!
    I always like your videos, however I am slowly beginning to be mildly annoyed with the amount of attention that Simplify3D gets.
    I do acknowledge that it is a powerful tool, and is well suited for its job, however ... 150€ for a slicer?
    It is not a price that me, and probably many others, would ever want to pay.
    /Especially/ with very well and good running open-source free alternatives, like Slic3r.
    It too can handle different settings in different parts of the 3D print (similar to the different "Tasks" in Simplify3D), and ALSO has a G-Code layer preview.
    I find it deeply upsetting that you are not giving this reliable and crafty, /free/ tool a look too, and instead focus on a slicer alternative that many might not want to get due to its price.

    • @bongodango
      @bongodango 8 лет назад

      Y'see, I would agree. Except S3D is worth the 150 and then another 50 if you ask me.

    • @MrRedwires
      @MrRedwires 8 лет назад

      Yeah, but I personally am not one to spend that much money.
      I am a DIY guy, I've assembled my printer myself out of a kit from E-Bay for 270€
      That basically makes S3D 50% the price of my machine.
      Besides, I have never ever had a problem with Slic3r when it comes to customisability, speed and reliability.
      /BESIDES/, is there really a reason for the software to be THAT expensive, if the community manages just fine to create a well working system for free?
      And compared to other things, like, oh I don't know, games or Windows itself, that take lots of work to get going, although I've never seen them pricing that high?
      It may be that S3D is a good tool for /industry/.
      But for me personally, it is overpriced, and not worth it.

    • @bongodango
      @bongodango 8 лет назад

      From a gamer's perspective, it is overpriced. When you realize how much work goes into it, and that they have one price for commercial and consumers alike (think engineers who need high quality prototype with extreme customizability), it really isn't that high a price. Look at music production software. Look at Adobe. Look at Cinema4D. Look at Autodesk. This is their pricing equivalents, not video games, my friend.

      True, for industrial use this software most certainly is better suited than any freeware like Slic3r or Cura, and definitely implements better options.
      But at least I personally am not industry.
      I don't need those extra features that allow industrial use to just be a tiny bit quicker or better, I just want something that works well, without having to spend half the price of my printer for it.
