    Not going to lie... Just had a million dollar idea. And just chose a random video to comment on hoping that you actually read your comments, or have someone that does. You could revolutionize the general public customer trailer hitch market. Very quick and dirty, look at your average big buy store hitch. Just a simple sleeve that takes up the gap between hitch receiver and the actual (wal-mart bought) hitch

    The fact that you can't have a solid first layer under support structure is probably the thing that bothers me the most with simplify3d. I asked them for that feature about 2 years ago and they just told me to use a raft to solve this :/ that feature has been a part of slic3r for years now...

    • @JAMESKNOWSGAMES
      @JAMESKNOWSGAMES 7 лет назад +1

      FTcuber the fact that slic3r has a feature has no bearing on if Simplify3D will develop the same exact feature. I'd assume that they've not received a ton of requests for that feature in the past 2 years or they likely would've added it.

    Ok you should had also touched STL files itself for a good success. Not always you need to do build supports up like you did in your slicer. Sometimes it's best you build them into your STL right from the start to eliminate failures and wasting a lot of support material. Like take a drawer which has a drawer handle attached. You can put a support under it for 25mm in a bigger area or you can put into your STL file a 45 degree support build material which comes up from the face where the handle is attacked to and build the support up in mid air by just using a 0.2mm support line. So sometimes you do need to think out of the box to support your print's proper, because also the Support functions of slicers often attach to hard to the piece you printing.
    Keep up the good work.

Like when you make a video talking about how to get the best prints, you shouldnt use simplify3d. I know its your favorite, but i think most of us use a free host controlling program. Im currently using MatterHackers MatterControl.

    Hi Angus! I was just wondering, is there an advantage to printing over USB compared to an SD card? I've always used SD cards but continue to see people using USB. Is there a major benefit to it?

    • @_Piers_
      @_Piers_ 7 лет назад +1

      BoomBrush I can only think of reasons not to use USB and no benefits to using it for printing.
      You know Windows 10 will wait until you're 15 hours into a 15 1/2 hour print and then decide to update :)
      Having said that, I do have a Raspberry Pi running Octoprint on one of my printers and that's connected via USB. So there are some uses.

    • @sttrife
      @sttrife 7 лет назад

      It's not that complicated, it's easier and quicker. Just like a regular printer, just click a few button and it starts printing. Many prints are not 15 hours for me, but just one or two hours. That is fine over usb, skip all the getting sd card out of printer/putting it in pc/ignore windows message about checkingthe drive/ saving stl to sd/taking out sd/placing it in printer/use printer control to select and print stl file... I dont understand how people prefer that for smaller prints

    • @BoomBrush
      @BoomBrush 7 лет назад

      My wording is bad. I'm asking if theres a benefit to using USB.
      I've never used USB because in the event the computer sleeps or something, you lose your entire print. So you would have to now rely on two things rather than just one.

    • @spikekent
      @spikekent 7 лет назад +1

      @BoomBrush, As Pook365 mentioned, I too use OctoPi on a Raspberry Pi.
      The Pi is connected to the printer over USB, but my PC connects to the Pi over my network.
      Once the print is sent to the Pi, the Pi takes care of everything, so it doesn't need the PC any more.
      If you print over USB directly from the PC, the PC streams the gcode directly to the printer, so any interruption will wreck the print.
      Hope that helps.

    • @Londrino
      @Londrino 6 лет назад

      The only advantages are that it's more convenient to start the print, and you can also get a live preview while it's printing depending on your slicer.
      Our lab has a bigass printer that connects over USB, you get a live preview with time estimate while printing, but if you lose connection, you're screwed, so SD is recommended.
      Our Afinia also connects over USB, but stores the code on the machine itself, so it can run without the computer once it gets going.
      So basically, USB is more convenient, but SD is safer, with some exceptions.

    A comment from the future, you can easily test tricky parts that needs support or tight tolerances, by dragging the model in z and also cutting everything else (like the back of the thinker here) in Prusaslicer with the cut tool, or in Cura by adding some modifier (if I remember correctly). That way the test is as fast an focused as possible. I did that with a small transformer PIP to get the xy compensation neither overly loose or that melted together the parts.

    Just watched this video after 3 years of printing. Wish I had seen it sooner for one reason. I use S3D and my supports are just one rough zigzag all the way to the actual print. I noticed yours get denser just before the print. How do you make it do this? Fortunately what I have been printing the most does not have much for overhangs. I try to avoid them in my designs but plan on venturing out more and see that this would be so much better when I do need supports but don't want the density all the way up. Thanks.

    Hi Angus, an observation and a question on contact surface area and adhesion pre-checks...
    @4:47 - Just for interest I did some rough calculations on the surface area difference between the 2 egg parts. The larger annulus is ~ 18.37 while the bottom of the other half is ~ 28.27, so the larger (disc) footprint is 64% of the area of the smaller disc (I assume units are mm).
    Now the question, even though the contact area is smaller, would not the larger diameter compensate in terms of stability (not necessary adhesion) to the work surface? The reason I ask is that I typically use a blue-tape surface and I notice the plastic-to-tape-adhesion is pretty good. The weakness at that point is the adhesion of the tape to the aluminum heated bed. This effect is _worse_ when the contact area is smaller in diameter. I would be interested in hearing your thoughts on this.
    Thanks for the Masterclass info, great stuff as always.
    - Eddy

    3d printers are useless to me if it can't print 3 miles of surface area in a 12x12x12 space

    Great tutorial Angus! Thank you.
    I have a question, but it's a bit off topic.
    Do you have any info on when simplify3d is planing to release their next update?
    I'm a long time simplify user, but I'm actually starting to consider using the open source ones, simplify is getting left behind 😕

    Can you do a video on "Essentium's FuseBox prints 3D with plasma" (recent techcrunch video)? I really want to know if it's all hype or actually legit.

    Another great video, TY. I use a MakerBot Rep2, it creates a raft( like your brim), which works well.
    Not sure if all 3D printers have this option?

    Love your channel Angus I think I've watched 90% of your uploads since I've found your channel. I'm new to 3d printing and was thinking of acquiring the Monoprice select mini as my first printer. I've searched your channel and can't seem to find a mention or review of it from you. i was wondering what you think of this printer and also would love to see you review this machine for your channel.

    awesome tips, Angus. Thanks for sharing:) I ran through a very similar process when I printed out my copy of the Thinker on the Ultimaker3.

    Have you seen the price of simplify3d ? Plug it all you like I'm not paying that much for a slicer.... Just saying! Greedy Basterds if you ask me.

      Worth it for multiple machines or printing on demand but yeah for a hobby it's difficult to justify unless you need the advanced features.

      Vince Prints 3D ....I would suggest MM do a poll of how many would buy S3D if the price came down. My guess is that thousands of us - on this channel alone - who buy it....at a reasonable price

      Funny thing is I do indeed have multiple machines now. You are partly to blame for that along with Joel and Jerry. Still the price is to high for a slicer. I was almost lynched by the wife for getting a second printer not a chance she would allow me to pay that much for printing software that I can get for free.

    I think you meant to write "pre-flight" in the description, but the "f" is missing.
