@@harrytsang1501The funny thing is the only bottom-mounting I've had experience with so far _has been_ M.2 slots (for an ultra-SFF PC).
Move IO to the side could be best for me. And for CPU there is already motherboard with CPU on the back side. That way you can use the whole case for passive cooling.

I've been building my own PCs for close to 30 years now. I've never once "managed" my cables beyond ensuring they won't get caught in a fan.

I've even been known to cable tie them to the roof to stop them falling into the fan 🤣
LTT even did a video forever ago showing cable management is unnecessary for cooling, and requires a literal teddy bear inside the PC to start affecting thermals.
I'd rather my computer be easily modified, and modern cable management prevents this. "Oh, I picked up this internal zip drive. Let's just slap it in and mess with it." Can't do that if your molex connectors aren't handy.

@@AltonV The problem becomes when companies go full throttle into one side, leaving groups of people without a choice. For example, I can no longer find good cases without a PSU shroud or 5.25" bays. You can't get a plug & play white LED strip anymore, they are all RGB. If you want pure white, you either have to hunt for new old stock or DIY. There's tons of motherboards with RGB but few with diagnostic displays.

How is having it on the back any less easy?
@@Th3_ArCh0nbecause the back usually is under a desk or facing a wall. I usually flip all my PCs around and have the cables hanging in the open, so I can just plug stuff in. Looks like crap tho.
This is ridiculous. There is nothing wrong with neat cable managementto ensure unobstructed airflow, but hiding for hiding sake is ridiculous. Unless you're making something without or minimal cables like the old Mac pros where everything slots straight in to the motherboard. For me I'll stick with the flexibility of the current cables. I think they just need to build better and more cable management in to cases.
The easy way to have a computer without cable clutter stress is to use a case without a window. Solid metal cases for the win!

10 years on from me looking at this and thinking "what what were you all thinking ?" It was obvious what you had to do.

The best thing about rear connection sockets will be those bloody CPU Power ports. I always have trouble connecting those in the very tiny little left-over space to work with AFTER you install a decent sized CPU cooler since most of the modern Motherboards come with extra shield plates protection around back IO panel area connectors, it further reduces the space to reach those two little power connector sockets.
Cables aside, the real problem is when you need to replace mobo battery. Motherboard manufactures could start placing CMOS battery connector to a more accessible place that does not require removing CPU cooler or mobo shroud or in many cases entire motherboard (especially when it is ITX mobo). Alternatively, why it has to be battery ? Can't they use a lithium-ion rechargeable battery that would charge when pc is on and only be used when pc is off ? That would mean no need to ever ever replace comos battery ever again.
Perhaps because it could be a potential fire hazard. Also, you will still need to replace it too, and it would cost more to do so - you can literally find cr2032s everywhere, dirt cheap, and they also last quite a while
Cost. 100%. A li-ion, plus BMC board for charging etc costs 20x more than a CR2032. It's a few bucks but those add up on a mass scale.
One benefit of a CR2032 is lifespan - those little buggers can last literally a decade, and they are dirt cheap. A li-ion - even an extremely expensive one - could never hope to provide even a fraction of a fraction of the lifespan of a CE2032, sadly.
They should replace the battery, with a battery? Maybe they should get rid of it altogether and replace it with flash. If it forgets the time then it can get it off the network
@@theEduEnthusiast even ssds get frozen if enough years nonused. Lots of tech we use nowadays isn't meant to last... Sadly.
The drawback to rear facing connectors are new hardware inside an older case you just happen to like. You're forced to get a new case if the new rearward standard becomes primary. Not that I'm against better cable management and easier assembly, but its creating now a secondary standard beginner PC builders may struggle with.
It will also make troubleshooting more annoying, epically for MB out of case (I recently did this as something prevented my system booting with a video card installed)
I honestly like seeing the cables. Making them flow nicely out of the PSU and over to the components is an art in and of itself. Nicely laid out cables look better than components full of plastic shrouds everywhere
There would be a big problem if they do this - All case makers will have to redesign their case to allow a bigger opening on that side to allow for the cables to be plugged in, because right now, this would not work with current cases as the small holes are just enough to route the cables to the front.
I haven't built a PC in 10 years but I love PCB board with visual lanes and components, not plastic shrouds.
actually it's a really nice idea, beside aesthetic it also help with :
+ air flow
+ taking off lots of HDD
but with those niche, it prolly cost more.
I manage my cables by hiding them under opaque side panels
I like cables. Cases are open so we see the insides, the electronics all well organized, not to hide everything underneath "shields". Also, terrible for troubleshooting and tinkering having cables on the back.
I think, I will sell fake frontside cables for decoration. 🤑
I was always lukewarm on the whole RGB thing, but this is an idea I can get behind. lol!
Get it? Cables...behind...the motherboard? Nevermind.
Having connectors on the back of motherboards will make them infuriating to use for testing out of case or on test-benches.
This is more for someone like me: set it and forget it. Someone making many swaps or doing many tests obviously shouldn't be anywhere near these things.

I use to like RGB, and when I sell a PC it is included. However for me I have grown tired of them in fact I've gone back to horizontal/cube cases. With GPUs getting so big you need supports to keep them for bending, and/or breaking having a vertical case is rather stupid nowadays. As for RGB It's a waste of money in both cost to get and waste of electricity. However cable management is good for airflow so there is merit to having tidy cables, but this push for hidden cables is getting ridiculous IMHO.
I personally like cable extensions over the no cable look, that's just my opinion though
I'm probably one of the EXTREMELY few people out there that GENUINELY enjoys cable management and does it for fun on customers PCs 😅

i gotta admit, im on the opposite side of that, i HATE that aspect of it, so tedius. i hate making the connections more though, the tiny delicate connectors scare me every time
Cable managing is part of the fun. Nicely routed braided cables look fantastic in my oppinion
Next: hiding all the water tubing so the CPU goes on the other side of the mobo
I had a windowed case in 2004 and was able to cable manage IDE cables by folding them the way Falcon NW and Voodoo PC did
My idea of aesthetics concerning my not-quite-generic black case is to hang my headphones on it.

These manufacturers need to come up with a easier and standard way to deal with front panel connectors on the motherboard.
I feel like we have split into two groups. Those who care how the pc looks, and whose who still do not care. Like geeks and nerds. Maybe someone have a name for each group?
People who pay extra for the RGB version of a given component mystify me.

Ah the 2000's a great time to be a computer enthusiast, when you computer and your car had neon lights everywhere. Lol
I can see it happening with ATX & mATX, but in many ITX cases it's much better to have connectors on the front because the graphics card sits vertically round the back.
GPU power connectors on the motherboard seems like a great way to simplify computer builds and take a big step towards cleaner cables. I hope it catches on!
Though it does make me wonder how itx motherboards will deal with the larger pcie footprint, when they're already stacking M2 slots on top of each other to save space
Please make solder traces on the board UV reactive. I want to see all the copper I'm paying for.

In a few years someone is going to "come up with the brilliant idea" to use opaque side panels in order to avoid doing cable management.
I purchased a ready built PC from PC Specialist here in the UK 2 years ago.
It has this type of case that hides the wires. The only problem is that every wire hardly makes it to its correct place and now they are bent and causing problems with the PC.
Just be careful and make sure this isn't the same for your PCs people.
Can confirm the 8 pin EPS cable is tricky. Especially when the top fan gives no space to unlock the connector.
Even before the windowed side panels. I was spray painting my pc case so I didn't have another beige box.
I like the idea of a computer case being an electronic aquarium. People can have eye-candy on their desks without killing a Betta or Goldfish by putting them in containers way too small. You can still find green pcb motherboards, non-windowed cases, zero rgb components, and non-designer cabling. Let people have their fun.
Oh goody, just what we needed: Walled garden PC builds where every component has to be from the same manufacturer so that it's "compatible". Wouldn't want you sticking an ASUS motherboard in a Gigabyte case with an MSI Graphics Card now, would we?
No? I'm sure there'll be agreed upon standards for motherboard layout and case design so things are interoperable between the individual manufacturers.

with no standardization and headaches for providing additional tooling for compatible cases...it'll end up as another dead standard. im still waiting for that 12VO standard that was announced 2 years ago. nothing from that yet on the mainstream consumer side yet.

5:26 I have always wondered why graphics cards still have top-mounted power connectors, when it would bu just as easy, and MUCH more convenient to put them on the END. I realise that some new graphics cards, like the RTX-4090, are only just long enough to fit in many cases, but most OTHER cards, including the RTX-3000 series, still have 30+mm of space that could easily accommodate a power connector, especially if it's placed near the bottom, close to the mobo.
I hope pre-build PC manufactures jump on this trend. Having the connector on the back has extra benefits for them. Shorter cables and faster assemble time.
As long as btf boards don't go past USD 220 ..I'm ready, looking forward to this new standard
There's got to be at least a small, but measurable, increase in airflow through the case, with no cables getting in the way, yes? Not much of an advantage, to be sure, but still there nonetheless.
I remember getting round IDE cables and routing them to be less ugly. Also used grommets in the 90s.

My cable management in the PSU chamber is just ok, but on the component side I have it looking beautiful and I'm proud of that. I'm kind of neutral on the idea of rear-mounted connectors.
Also, my flavor of RGB has recently shifted to as little of it as possible. My case is dark, aside from the CPU block and Corsair XD5 pump (both of which run off a motherboard header so I don't have to deal with a Commander Pro or other hardware).

I enjoy cable management. And think I'm better than almost every example that I've ever seen.
I just want a plug for the case's front panel... it's all I would ask for TT____TT. I hate to plug it, and hate myself when I forget to plug it before set the motherboard in the case
My PC has so much RGB my entire setup. :D Corsair, SteelSeries and MSI :3 I use the AMD Wraith Prism tho it works for me without any problems and looks awesome.
In my eyes, the beige box remains king. Nothing like a sleeper.

I still prefer my nice fractal torrent with solid side panel and no rgb. It does a great job and it does it quietly.

I would argue that going by social media to judge how important aesthetics are results in bias. The kind of people who don't care about aesthetics don't tend to post images of their setups online, so fewer of those posts exist for people to react to, and aesthetics in general are more important in social media. It's classic selection bias.

The main downside, for me, is that cases will need to be thicker to accommodate the rear-facing cables. As a fan of slim or SSF builds, I won't be going for this trend.

As a fan of SFF cases, the added case width is a drawback for me. For large cases, it does look clean though.

I am rocking fractal case with no windows. I feel look of the pc is least interesting thing in pc world. Of course you manage cables to make airflow better but the looks couldn't matter less to me :P

RGB lights are stupid, tbh. A waste of power. Only good thing of modern cases is that they are wide and easier to handle inside, but that's a consequence, not a cause of how modern pcs are. A GPU the size of a 2080TI won't already fit in properly with all the cables and drive bays in a non-modern case (anything like what was offered back in 2020, with HD bays, is a no-no unless you can make your GPU dance the limbo and you manage to jiggle it in or out with half a cm of clearance at most.

Yup, trial and error, especially if it's your personal build X-D could take 6 hours of cable management.
This is not a problem with the amazing Apple Macs.
