- The unfortunate reality in North America, is that our history is disappearing at a rate much faster than it is being preserved. I run into this reality everywhere I got in Canada, and things are not much different here in the USA. It really blows me away, because our countries are so young. We have this beautiful opportunity to preserve the history of our countries, literally from their earliest years of settlement and expansion, but it is left to rot a fade away. In this video, I visit the amazing ruins of Rhyolite, a ghost town dating back more than a century. The history of this location is very interesting, because this is the most radical example of a "boom town". In 1904, there was nothing but vacant land here. By 1906, it was a large city with an incredibly advanced infrastructure, so much so that it even had its own stock exchange. What is most interesting though, is that by 1909, it was deserted.
Time has not been kind to this location, and there is little left of the old city. Most of the wood was salvaged to aid in the expansion of growing cities near by, such as Beatty and Las Vegas. What was built of stone has lasted much longer, but left to the elements it is slowly crumbling back to its original state on the ground.
I had a great chat with the caretaker Carl, but I really wanted to get out into the mountains and see some of the lesser explored areas. I hopped on the e-bike, and chose a path into the desert. Exploring in Canada, it is actually pretty common to discover a location that has not been seen by a human in a century, but here in the USA it is not the same. With the population density being so much higher, it is nearly impossible to find a place untouched, but I sure did find some neat things to see.
My first adventure in the mountains was into an old mine shaft. This isn't anything new for me or for the viewers of this channel, but what was inside is definitely different. As soon as you enter the shaft, you will notice the temperature climb drastically. The further I went into the mountain, the hotter and more humid it became. I thought for sure I would find a hot spring or something unexpected in there, but strangely enough, nothing. I went to the end of every branch of that mine shaft, and it was just a regular old mine shaft. I would have to guess that the shafts here in the desert are just hot like that from the sun, but exploring into other shafts later in the day, I did not find the same result.
I took the bike way out into the desert and away from the city, hoping to find an area a little less traveled. I definitely found some good hidden spots, but once again there were signs of recent visitors, but this time I found something I would never have expected. I found another mine shaft, but upon entering I could see a couch style chair. Further into the shaft, I discovered a bag full of pre rolled joints. Clearly I stumbled onto someones secret little hideaway.
Things sure are different here than they are back home, but as long as I get back to the MoHo safe and sound, it is always a good adventure.
Rhyolite was a total unexpected and unplanned stop for me, but I thoroughly enjoyed my time there.

On 5/28/77 this Beech C-45G N6065V crashed after having suffered a complete failure of the number one engine while landing causing a forced off airport landing ending with a collision with a pole and wires. The C-45 was on a flight from Davis, California to Beatty, Nevada.

I stopped by and checked out only the wrecked airplane too. Here is the story of what happened.
Rumor has it that Fran’s Star Ranch thought it would be a good idea to run a promotion to generate business for the brothel. They came up with the idea of having a parachute jumping contest. The rules were fairly simple, if you could jump out of the plane and land on a mattress that sat atop a large painted star located on the property, you could spend one full evening with a lady of your choice.
The contest went to shit after the pilot of the Beechcraft C-45 became distracted by the girls standing outside, clipped a pole on the landing strip and crash landed where it still sits today.

I lived in Tonopah, 100 miles north of Rhyolite, for 15 months when I was 8-9 years old back in 1957-58.

There is a rebate/tax credit for e - bikes. I built my own on an existing bike I have.Don't bother with less than 1ooo watts and 48 volts. Mine does 43 mph and about 40- 50 miles range. And I'm upgrading... It ain't no Toy!
OMG you made my year. I was there in 87 and spent a week. At that time the hotel still had red velvet drapes hanging and tattered from the wind. You could hear the wind whine as it made its way thru the glassless window frames. I was parked by the old jail. And to visit the rail road stop there it was like stepping into another world. Thank you so much you brought back a lot of memories . you do need to see Cerro Gordo and Bodie thank you Dustin good job p.s. rattlesnakes like to wrap around the sagebrush underneath.

There are a lot of hot springs in Nevada. Must be some fumerals seeping through cracks into that mine, or else it would be regular ground temperature. Be careful in there. Some geothermal vents and hot springs emit a lot of Co2. Those pin heads are probably spun glass. Excellent video. Good interview too.

I believe it said "Hills Bros" on the can and I think I saw "vacuum packed". If so, then it held coffee. I've been to Rhyolite many times. A 1970's visit found a museum and an active bar in the old train depot.

Sooooooo, you found my chairs. I never for the life of me, or my wife thought you would or anyone would. Long story short, in 2019 rolled my ankle on the way in for four day hike. Bad enough we left that and some other camping equipment there and hiked out the next morn and called it done. Four days turned into 30 hours, ankle surgery, six weeks off work, and its still mess ed up to this day. Full disclosure, we do not smoke weed (airline pilot and not one likes us on drugs). Those where not there when we left the chair, stove, tent, coffee pot and coffee. So other have been there since. Glad the chairs is there to this day. Was a fight to take it. I did not want to and the wife did. I had to carry it. When I rolled the ankle she did not want to take it out. Go figure. Either way, glad to see its still there and people are……..relaxing with it. PS, never saw any snakes or scorpions. Actually we never even saw much of anything alive. But what a place.

Folks often make a big deal over cut nails and round nails, but there was good 40 year period in the late 1800s where production of both overlapped. Cut nails are still being made and sold today. They work a lot better when working with native hardwoods.
Another great little documentary. The amount of effort and creativity required always wows me. Was thinking of work by Ken Burns while watching. You have a way of telling a story that pulls the viewer in. And speaking of pulling you in: what did we say about being pulled down the rabbit hole to portals for another dimension? They are even using comfy chairs and pot now! Caution young Skywalker!

The needles were cool. I was just gifted some. They ARE glass tops.. Sometimes called pins, sometimes hat pins. I was able remove the rust from mine. Sliced a potato in half, added some liquid dish detergent to the slice of potato and stabbed away! Rinsed and good as new!

Lot's of geothermal in that area, used to be a geothermal research facility outside of Jean back in the early 1980's. Another great video of my old stomping grounds from the late 70's early 80's...
Rhyolite is very cool. I once bought a copy of the Bonanza TV show map (my last name is Cartwright) from the old guy at the little museum. Another time, I metal detected a WW1 army uniform button near the top of the hill that's halfway between Rhyolite and Beatty. It's hard detecting anywhere in that desert. You'll swear you're up some ravine where no human has ever trod... only to to find 8,000,000 .22 bullets, half of a 1978 Chevy truck, and a limited-edition sugar cookie tin from last year.

The plane was owned by the brothel and used for promotions. You could go sky diving there and if you landed on a mattress they had outside of the brothel you would get a free date with a lady lol. The plane still sits where it crashed.
Do you know why it crashed and when? So interesting to just see it in the flat desert.
Wow, fascinating. There is this channel Wonderhussy and she has covered a lot of the Nevada area, really into abandoned places out west and gives history finds hot springs and lives out of her SUV, but I’m surprised I can’t recall her being in that place. There’s another place out there where a guy, another youtuber, bought an old mining town and is renovating it hoping to draw attention to the history of that mining town turning it into place of interest. He has explored much of the mines. In fact there is an old elevator that still works taking him down various elevations.
Ghost town living is the guys channel. It’s of the Cerra Gordo mine. It’s in California. He would definitely be a great interview. Guy knows quite a bit of the mining history of that area.

Dustin Tried to stop at Cerro Gordo a few videos back, but couldn't get ahold of Brett, and since the road is 7 miles of steep windyness, He didn't want to try driving up there and just dropping in as he was afraid the MOHO couldn't make it.

Wonderhussy actually lives in Vegas and just takes trips a week or 2 at a time. But she's got great vids out.
