Ok, the salt mines at Isla Del Carmen were discovered by the Jesuit in 1698. The north end of the island has a bay named Bahia Salinas (Salt Bay) where the mines were located. In 1875 two brothers from La Paz gained control of the mine. There was a rail line of 2000 feet from the mine to a pier where the salt was loaded onto ships. At its peak, this was the largest salt mine in the world. It closed in 1984. Competition from the salt mine at Guerrero Negro on the west coast of Baja were said to cause its demise, the salt there already being on the Pacific. Much of the salt was exported to Japan.. So, evidently these are salt deposits rather than evaporation pits like those right at the mouth of the Colorado River.
Gotta be one of the best RUclipsrs out there in the way of content, personality and production. @Destination Adventure awesome man, keep it up. Mega envious bro 😎
Now in my early 60s. I spent some time in Mexico, traveling through central Mexico and all around the coastal states. My favorite place in the world. Thanks again Dustin for the memories.
@@Destination_Adventure When I was in my 20s to early 30's my mom was a travel Agent, and I spent a great many winter in Mexico on Fam Trips. I wish now, I have gone to the Baja instead, . The only non-tourist location I went to then (in the late 90's) was a trip to the Yucatan, to meet a woman I had met on a BBS, she was on the boarder between Mexico and Belize// Muchas Gracia,, mi amiga Your adventures have for me brought back some great memories of Mexico.
Truly a unique and thrilling adventure. Would love to know more about the odd buildings, dead sheep, and water tanks and pumps. Intriguing and gets the blood pumping with excitement!
WOW, I had to backup the video quite a few times to get a second look at things! I think I'll bookmark this one so I can watch it again later, I had a stroke (brain aneurism) a couple of years ago so the video will be new again to me. This video had a lot of surprises. Thanks for taking us along.
I'm from County Durham in the UK. My dream used to be to buy an RV and criss cross the Americas, self sufficient with no intentions of going back. I gave up on that dream years ago when I discovered DestinationAdventure.
I first drove the Baja highway in 1975 and several times since then, you’re capturing some of the remoteness that brings back amazing memories, keep up your great storytelling
I started watching you about a year and a half ago and look forward to your videos. I just love the fact that you go to all those out of the way places and that you stop on the side of the road when you see something interesting. Thanks for taking us on your adventures 💛
I did a 10 day kayak trip out there, fisherman and boaters use tanks like those for water, otherwise they have to carry too much water along. Also, pop your boat, get stranded, and water is everywhere but not a drop to drink.
Hey Dustin. Epic little adventure. I'd love to explore that old town. The history! I always try and imagine what it would have been like in the hey day! So cool. Good job on the "Trigger Fish." Here in Tasmania, we call them "Leather Jackets" due to their unique, shark-like skin. When cleaning, it is very easy to just peel off. The other name, not so commonly used nowadays, but was popular In the old days (my Nanna Brown always called them this), was "Butterfish". Due to the soft texture and taste of the fish. So yummy! Thanks again for another great adventure, definitely my favourite channel. Rob,Tasmania, Australia 🇦🇺
@Destination Adventure Aren't they a badass little fish!? If it wasn't a "Trigger Fish"...it'd be a "Very strong mouthed buck toothed shell biter!". As a child, one of my early fishing life lessons when I first discovered this fish, was "Don't touch Spike...and Definitely, don't put finger in mouth.." . I was quite young. Still have scar. Keep up the adventures. Rob
Thank You Laddie, looking forward to Your next adventure.. Makes my day when I see You've posted another video showing a new place You're visiting.. Amazing places like the abandoned salt mine and all the other great places You've been to.. LvYa...
Wonderful !! I loved this one. Kind of gave me some feelings about Aliens being there. Where did the people go? Hope you go back and show us the shipwrecks. Hope you catch your yellow tail too.
Oh my gosh, Dustin. There are just so many unanswered questions.. I sincerely respect your guts and your stamina. And, please remember that we want you to be safe at the same time. I sound like a mom, because I am one. Take care and enjoy!! 💕🌸✌️
Dustin, love this episode. You often do things that push my comfort zone and sometimes, bloody scares me … but tasting an unknown spooked me! Keep pushing my comfort zones. 💜
Hey Dustin. Mi esposa y yo, hemos visitado 25 estados de Mexico. Es un pais bellissimo. (Sorry dude, I like to throw a little Spanish into my comments. Our first exposure to Mexico was a motorhome trip down the Baja in 2011. We spoke no Spanish. Now we are both fluent. We visited 25 states over 9 months of travel in a 3 year period. 3 months each year. We love following your adventures and hope to meet you someday. We live in the Okanagan now. We pull a teardrop with a Tesla and plan on exploring more of the Cariboo and kootenays next year. We may make it to puerta penasco this Christmas with our combo. Stay safe on the road Dustin. Cuidate amigo.
rattlesnake beach is such a cool camping spot. there's bighorn sheep hunting on the north end of isla carmen so you'll want to check in with the caretaker at the town before wandering too far from the beach. there's a great hike across the island west to east.
RUclips's mantra is "content is king". This channel is a great argument against that. This is some of the best content on RUclips, bar none! In fact the whole channel is great content and imo every video should have millions of views the first week. C'mon RUclips, put this man's videos in front of folks! Keep doing what you're doing Dustin!
Thank you, and I sure hope it gets traction soon. I’m not sure I can keep doing this forever for 10,000 views. I’m thankful for every one of those views, but it doesn’t pay the bills. Help me out here RUclips lol
I'm so envious of your adventures! The more I watch your videos, the more I like your channel. I hope I can travel and discover like you do soon when I retire.
Isla Del Carmen! Ive been there too.. You are having a trip of a lifetime! What a beautiful Destination Adventure. Dustin, great video!!! Nice camp spot too.

I LOVED this one! Your videos are perfect! Usually when I see anything above 15min they've been boring but not your videos fly by, sometimes waaay too quickly! I get lost in the adventures with you and I find myself wondering how things got there or why they're there! Keep up the awesomeness!
8:21 its a coke bottle from the 50's! ive collected about 20 of them from exploring abandoned houses mostly. that one is in quite good condition! they arent worth anything really other than historical value in the future years, still cool to have if you decide to keep something, i always take a small token for my adventures, but i dont record mine so i take something for people to ask questions about.
That’s very cool! I’d love to see photos of it in operation. And lol you but that over your eyes just as I was wondering why you weren’t wearing sunglasses.

The salt got there due to natural evaporation millennia ago

Cheers Rob. It’s tough to learn how to fillet those triggerfish, but this was my first fillet job that was almost perfect. Getting there.
@Destination Adventure Aren't they a badass little fish!? If it wasn't a "Trigger Fish"...it'd be a "Very strong mouthed buck toothed shell biter!".

Rob
@Destination Adventure don't fillet! Skin, behead....Eggwash, flour, then lightly fry... = Butterfish!
Absolutely love the content! Super awesome music as well! Love to see some Colorado!
Thank You Laddie, looking forward to Your next adventure.. Makes my day when I see You've posted another video showing a new place You're visiting.. Amazing places like the abandoned salt mine and all the other great places You've been to.. LvYa...

Frick yes.
You are so talented and interesting to watch. Keep it up.
Sweet video cracked me up with the sheep!
THANK YOU - UK
Such a cool place! I wonder if the curved wall was the back wall of a church alter? I believe this is common in Catholic church architecture.
Wonderful !! I loved this one. Kind of gave me some feelings about Aliens being there. Where did the people go? Hope you go back and show us the shipwrecks. Hope you catch your yellow tail too.
Great video, that's sad about the Bighorn sheep though, makes you wonder
