What a time this was for the local rock scene. Squeal, Springbok Nude Girls, Sugardrive, Lithium, Nine, Blue Chameleon, Wonderboom, Battery-9, Live Jimi Presley, Urban Creep... Music festivals were a proper jol back then.
Saw these guys in Durban in the 90s....Nine at 3 Arts Theatre in Diep River and Sugar Drive at Brass Bell...friggin awesome bands....holy shieeeet man...miss those days ...also at The Purple Turtle in Capetown
At the time this glorious piece of brilliance came out Kurt fkin Darren was not even on the radar... BOYS we need Squeal, Sugardrive, Sons of Trout etc back please, the last thing this world needs is hop hop skietmyindiekop.... also THANKS for the music!
Hi Dawn! I'll trade you a CD for a cassette! I have very rare and special memorabilia from Squeal. Let's start a proper Squeal RUclips channel...Dave, are you in?
As far as I'm concerned, they deserved every bit as much recognition as Nirvana. Their music hit hard and "Long Pig" was always my favourite song of the group...
Yeah. I stayed up late listening to the best bands in the world half hour, uncle Paul's bedtime stories etc. It was a great era for SA music! Barney introduced many to the riches of the local music industry
one of the 90s anthems... up there with SNG, Battery 9.... love this! hitting repeat now... reminds me of that Jon Vlismas video countdown thing and the Night Zoo...
heard this this morningon the radio...........fuck the memories came flooding back .....must have seen this live about 20 times mostly at the bat centre..........thanks for the memories .........Dave and Brett.......hope your well.....Neville
I was fifteen and it was one of those underage matinee's at the buzz bar in pietermaritzburg. Still have the shirt that Dave Birch signed. The first band I ever saw live and was blown the fuck away.
+Joshua Reynolds just said I used to cry when they started playing at those made nights of like Lithium, Nine, Nude Girls and Squeal playing one after the other - gonna buy the cd - a must have!
I remember when it was just Dave and Brett and they were known as "This Is This". What a band and all round great guys! Still listen to the debut album.
Brett you are the machine! The bass part for this song is the most physically demanding I've ever done. This song rocks. It is one of the all time rock classics.
This was one of SA's finest groups & the best to come out of Durbs. The first time I saw Squeal was in Amanzimtoti (R10 Cover charge wow!)and decided, after seeing Dave play, I need to trade in my Samick & get me a real Les Paul. It was clear that Dave was a very seasoned guitar player/musician and still is. Bret Barnes, well what a bass player. He put in some great vocal harmonies. What is that man doing these days? and hey "F..k you China!!!!!!!"
Having a reminisce and I can't belive I found this! I was travelling in SA as a teenager and met these guys...please remind me what the lead guitarist is called? I hung out with him and his older brother. Saw them in Amanzimtoti, Durban, Jo'Burg too I think. Also at Rustlers Valley Festival 96' Crazy times for a English gal travelling alone! AWESOME :o) Where are they now...
Wow, if you hung out with David Birch and his "older brother", then you also hung out with Rob Birch of the Stereo MCs. Respect! But, yeah - these guys were cool. I saw an Oppikoppi unplugged gig with them one Sunday morning, and Brett had some beers at his feet. I was seated right in front of him, and at one point he reached down for a beer, then offered me one. I was probably 16, but what the hell - we're all rockers, haha.
Brett, just realised. This is you! We met in SA in the 90's Katy Davidson. Met your bro in Oak Lodge, Capetown backpackers and you guys in Johannesburg...95-6 methinks. Do you remember!?
Indeed. The singer/guitarist is Dave Birch, brother of Rob Birch of the Stereo MCs. Dave has retired his rockstar pants and he works with us now doing sound design and final mixes for wildlife films and series. He regularly serenades everyone in the office with ad-lib vocal performances...once a rockstar always a rockstar.
Hi Brett, I'm part of a local musicians forum that has "jam sessions" for its members every now and then. Quite a few people in the group are major fans and would like to add this song to the roster. We've got it mostly figured out but would you be able to possibly assist with anything from lyrics to tabs for the song?
What a time this was for the local rock scene. Squeal, Springbok Nude Girls, Sugardrive, Lithium, Nine, Blue Chameleon, Wonderboom, Battery-9, Live Jimi Presley, Urban Creep... Music festivals were a proper jol back then.
Damn. I miss my Lithuim album. CD got stolen.
When 5FM played rock music.
@@warrenphillips69 or in my opinion any decent music at all, but that might just be showing my age😝

Nope, you were correct. I quit listening to 5fm when Barney Simon left. It started going downhill from there.
2023.. 2:52am ...my neighbours love this shit !!
Holy fucking shitballs, this is good memories! Barney Simon's late night rock show, must have been mid-90's, just started high school. Good times!
These guys were awesome. The Bat Center in Durban. Life was good then.
Ah yes, The Night Zoo. "Look out everyone, he's coming through the doors"
I SO WISH WE COIULD HAVE MADE THESE GREAT bands make it to the top. We knew how they good but they would not listen. 2022 still rocking. 🤘
A South African Rock Classic!
Lucky to have lived through this era…raw, loud and tight as fuck
At the time this glorious piece of brilliance came out Kurt fkin Darren was not even on the radar... BOYS we need Squeal, Sugardrive, Sons of Trout etc back please, the last thing this world needs is hop hop skietmyindiekop.... also THANKS for the music!
I have this on cassette. I got this is 1995. And I still listen to Squeal. In my opinion still the best band to come out of South Africa.
Hi Dawn! I'll trade you a CD for a cassette! I have very rare and special memorabilia from Squeal. Let's start a proper Squeal RUclips channel...Dave, are you in?
Saw the Band for my first time at Carfax in Newtown... It still rocks!
As far as I'm concerned, they deserved every bit as much recognition as Nirvana. Their music hit hard and "Long Pig" was always my favourite song of the group...
