I can't wait until Wednesday, I get to see him play a double show in NYC performing songs from all his solo albums and some of his reworks of Soul Coughing that's going to be on the new album. I think it's the first time he's played SC songs live in around 10 years.
"didn't start getting into folkier songs until he went solo with his acoustic years later." ***Mike Doughty (who billed himself at the time as "M. Doughty") was a folk singer (he attended Eugene Lang College with Ani DiFranco, where they studied with Sekou Sundiata and played around the school together), slam poet, sometime music writer, and doorman at the old Houston Street location of The Knitting Factory,*** as per Wikipedia. No, my comment was never about this song but the genre itself.
Hmmm, I don't remember asking a question? He was not a folk singer before Soul Coughing, it his first music project and it had very to no folk influence at all, mostly jazz and hip hop. He didn't start getting into folkier songs until he went solo with his acoustic years later. All that is in his book, which is awesome. I'm sure he's listened to lots of folk in his life, but I was just making a comment stating that this song was not based on his "roots", just the personal reason behind it.
Mike, I just wanted to say I'm glad you're still with us and still putting out good music. For a while there I was afraid we had lost you to the rock and roll life style. It was looking like you were following in the steps of folks like Jim Morrison and Kurt Cobain. Luckily for us (and you) you seem to have found your path. Keep creating and putting out great tunes and doing some covers too. Best wishes.
"You do realize that I could change that to say Mike Doughty was a black jazz musician from the 30's right?" I love people that argue "nuh huh". You make it too easy.
And trust me, your not telling me anything about Soul Coughing, I still have my original CD case and wore it out years before they ever hit the radio or TV nationwide.
He was a folk singer long before Soul Coughing... and John Denver is folk soooo, Perhaps you thought I was referring to the Denver song and not the genre itself. You obviously asked the wrong question to get that response.
I'm here because of the Beyonce lip syncing article. Even after watching the vid, there were only a couple of spots where I could see you lips not being perfectly synced. Great recording of the song, otherwise. It one of those songs I've heard as a kid, and I think it was done really well; I'm really a Hip Hop fan, but this was slick. I hope that I can get vocals like this out of Protools!! Ted Twis
It's actually not his roots. I saw him a few weeks ago and he explained that his girlfriend was from West Virginia and he covered this song to impress her.
O Mike e o "Daniel Boone" numa sàtira ao herói do Kenucky de chapéu de guaxinim, parece querer fazer passar alguma mensagem todavia sem o conseguir. Mas canta muito melhor.
Even southern WV was no grits until the last few years when Bob Evans and the chain restaurants thought they should be there. Biscuits and Gravy is where it's at. Tudor's.
Excellent cover Mike. You did a classic Justice . Great voice too.
Why am I just now hearing this?! I love this!
I miss the mountains. And the water that is so clean you can swim underwater and drink at the sane time.
Well...that is one of the best version of this song I have ever heard. Thanks.
I like it. Especially Rosanne Cash's harmony vocals, they're subtle but just right.
Great tribute to one of the best tunes ever. I see the naysayers below don't get Doughty or know how long he's been in the biz.
I find him aesthetically pleasing and in other words fly.....😉
Thanks Mike
Great tune , well done . I'm loving Roseanne Cash's bv's .
It's nice to see Mike throwing a nod to his roots with this song.

The opening grits part didn't do much for me, but I love some Mike Doughty. Will read his book soon!
This song evokes feelings of happiness :)

Great cover, and super quirky video Mike. It's odd, and weird, and cool. I guess it's exactly what we should expect. Dig it. :)
We need more music like this..... Timeless. Great job Mike. Keep up the good work. Rip John Denver.

CR is about the south PA / WV area....... no grits guy.
Even southern WV was no grits until the last few years when Bob Evans and the chain restaurants thought they should be there. Biscuits and Gravy is where it's at. Tudor's.
Agreed CLT4now

Jack Duncan is just a stage name for Scrap, isn't it? I wouldn't be surprised...
Write a mea culpa on Slate about your Beyonce article.
I'm here because of the Beyonce article as well. Yeah it kind of looks like you phoned it in on the lip synching. But I did enjoy the song and video!
Make fun of us. You need to spend a month with my parents young man. You'd learn respect for these mountains 😊
This is actually a decent remake! Well done, sir (no offense to the legendary John Denver)
You got the songwriters' names wrong. It's Bill Danoff, Taffy Nivert, and John Denver
"Music video by Mike Doughty *performing* Take Me Home, Country Roads. (C) 2012 Snack Bar"
Its 60 year old Skrillix
not bad
do you know how to play guitar dude?
Didnt see any bacon grease in them grits, shame on you
There are too many interviews on your soundcloud. makes cont. play very annoying, despite the witty banter. might be worth doing something about.
Didn't think this song could sound terrible.
JUles lol word. This boi fkd it up proper 😂
sounds like they tried to remix it in a dishwasher
It can't.
Ignorant ears. Good luck on the rest of your life.
lol thanks for posting what i'm thinking
