After watching the video a couple days ago, I went online and ordered a microwave rice cooker. It arrived today and I cooked my first batch of microwaved rice. WHERE HAS THIS BEEN ALL MY LIFE??? The rice came out perfect, in less time, with no mess and I did not have to watch the pot. And to think I've been doing it the old fashioned way for 30+ years. Greg, you're my hero! :D
This method of cooking rice has been adopted by us. Two reasons: it saves time and also saves electric. A microwave only uses about 800 watt whereas a cooker hob is about 1KW and is on for longer. We haven't used a proper microwave rice pot, as demoed by Greg but a plastic bowl covered with a small plate. Many thanks, Greg, you've saved us money and our rice turns out really nice each time ass well! (o:
Thank you for washing the rice three times before cooking. Most people in the west dont seem to understand that there can be dust and impurities in the rice. We have used a similar rice cooker for microwave for the past ten years with great result every time. I have even introduced it to our neighbours.
Greg.... I don't know what I would have done without this video. I'm hard core craving rice and curry and its 4am and you made my life a little easier 👌
This is a guy from Indiana, USA ... 'I'm calling from the future this is September 23rd, 2022' 😎👍🤘🇺🇲 (I remember getting this way back when, whilst googling for a microwave rice cooker..... Been a fan ever since ...
Good onè bloke. I used to mico my rice for years and had no probs, BUT, with my other half is philipino, she bought an electric cooker and made things simpler, but I got lazy with it all, and after the second electric one crapped itself, I'm here asking you to jog my memory. Thanks heaps m8, simple and 2 the point 2 get the job done. TTFN, Teddy😂
I just did this tonight with a plastic mixing bowl and put the dinner plate on top. The 'spout' on the edge of the bowl let the steam out and the rice was great. Fluffed it up a bit with a fork. Nice warm plate. Home made mixed veg pasta sauce on top. Yummy!
Thank you. I was looking for something on how to cook rice with my micro steamer. This was the easiest most complete instructions that I found. I appreciate it!
I'll tell you right now....once I found ONE of these BAD boys....I NEVER looked back!!!!....And it does instant rice also, just for those of you who might want rice in about 6-8 mins.!!!! If you don't mind instant rice, it will cook it just fine!!! 😁😎🖒🖒....I'm actually using mine RIGHT NOW for some boxed cilantro-lime rice! I just took it out of the box, measured it, added the water needed, and the packet....gave it a good stir b4 cooking, and I'm waiting patiently! lol 😁
You can also make rice ahead and store it flat in a baggie. Rice freezes beautifully! Takes only a few minutes to thaw and warm it in the microwave for just a few minutes to eat! Between my rice cooker and Panini grill, I have cut down on cooking times and clean up time for meals! Did you know that you can use both the rice cooker and the Panini grill for a lot more than what they were intended?
I have a rice cooker just like this one. Only difference is that mine has a clear cover that goes on before the top. I had forgotten how to use this and was glad to find your video. Thanks. Now I just have to find out if the directions is the same for sticky rice.
Thanks alot greg your recipes help me alot with my two sons Because feeding them is a bit of a trouble when im working a double shift As well as my wife leaving me for a young rockstar Once again thanks alot Greg x0x0.
I gave a thumbs up mainly because you washed the rice and the people I watched they didn't wash the rice. Me and my granddaughter agree with you that you should wash the rice because of all the dirt my granddaughter was so happy that you washed the rice and my granddaughter is only 11 years old. And the rice that you cooked looked very nice and tasty.
(1) The key is the amount of water. With the rice I use, it is 1.5 cup of cold water for every cup of uncooked rice. (2) If you use a bowl, for 2 cup rice, set it to 12 minutes with a power setting of 60%, If you make the power at 100%, the froth may overflow (3)The bowl should be 50% bigger than the contents (rice+water volume) (4) The advantage of bowl is that, you can cook smaller portions, say 1 cup uncooked rice, without a big pot occupying cupboard space.
I feed my dogs some rice in the winter along with normal doggy food to warm their bellies but I buy minutes rice not even minute rice sometimes and put water a little rinse or two in the microwave for about 5 minutes and I have found if you make smaller batches of rice it takes less time if you want to go ahead and make you a serving of whatever you cooked it with then get some more later.
@@JulianVidal001 Myself, butter but no salt, I don't use salt except boil pasta water to boil faster, but not a lot of salt, and lately, both butter and sugar. I use some sugar for some years now, but only with regular white rice, Jasmine, or Basmati. For a couple years or so now, I use the latter two.
in asia the common type of rice that is consumed is the kind which are simply milled and coated by talcum or glucose powder to improve the grains' appearance (its cheap). with this type of rice it is recommended to wash the rice at most 3 times to remove the possible dirt and chemicals that adhered to the grains. there are other types of rice like those "enriched" ones but these are costlier.
Like the video, simple & easy. I like to add a table spoon of regular corn/cooking oil, at the same time as the salt. I find it helps keep the rice separate.
I've recently brought a microwave rice cooker best thing ever. I never put salt in the rice because whatever hot meal your going to eat with the rice has got salt in it already. i.e stir fry, beef casserole ect
11 years later and it still works! See you back here in 2034, if we're all still around and rice is available in (still legal) commercial outlets or on the underground, where we can 2 grams of Tai White, a gram of coke and a 500ml bag of Basmati? Tx boo.
That’s honesty for you 😂 So now you know how easy it is to make steamed microwave rice time to have a go. Trick is to probably use a high quality basmati rice like tilda. Happy cooking
Groovy! I do prefer the boil kettle and pour in a pan method, but still this it really easy and less mucking about. Where did u buy your rice cooker from, Greg?
Hi Greg! Thanks for the tip of the water for the plants, works great! Also, if i dont have a microwave rice cooker can i just use a plain 'ol Tupperware?
If your rice bag says enriched rice, when you rinse the rice you are also removing the enriched part of. Rice has been enriched because of a higher incidence of spina bifida in cultures that rice in a large part of their diet. So some years back rice started to be made enriched to provide the vitamins to help lower the incidence of SB in cultures that rice plays a large part of the diet.
Hi Greg...just wondering,,,I have a similar little cooker as you are showing here. Can I use a product such as Uncle Ben's rice that cooks for 10 minutes on the stove in this manner? The rice package does not include microwave instructions. I do know that it does not require any rinsing as it has been done by the manufacturer. Maybe you can try this in another video, so see if it can be done and get it down to an art like you always do? Thanks, Ursula
I have a 1qt. well known brand microwave cooker. My microwave is 1100 watts. I don't know what is the wattage of your microwave? So, my question is, do I nuke mine on 100% power for 18 minutes? I don't like my rice to be too watery. I like it flaky. A little moist would be ok, but not gummy. What do you suggest?
Awesome I tried this and my rice came out perfect. The rice lasted two nights. When I cook rice in the steamer it takes an hour and the rice is soggie and no one eats it.
What watts has your microwave please ! This is very important! E.g. yours got 600 w and cook rice in 18 min, mine has 700 w and would cook rice in 15 min 25 sec ! ( 15,43 min ) you got me? So please tell me
Is there an alternative way as far as you know of doing this slightly faster? If not then no problem because it looks great. It's just that in my office we have 1 microwave and I don't want to hog the machine for 18 minutes at lunch. Is it possible to do this at home the night before and then reheat it safely in the microwave at work? I hear that you need to be careful with reheating rice. Great video though.
Soak rice for 30 minutes. The cooking time will be reduce also the water quantity can be reduced. Though not sure by how much time as I cook the traditional way after soaking the rice.
oh yeah I cook it in many different things from the dog bowl itself to coffee cups and I think I did it in a container or some sort one time and it bubbled over on me so always use either a tall pan cup or a item with a lid be safe and have fun.
what kind of rice pot can stand the heat in the microwave oven and how would I know if it's the right type? I'm worried that using the wrong one can cause explosion in oven
It's called a microwave rice cooker, but most glass, pyrex, ceramic dishes are fine. Not sure about acrylic ones, though most plastics are safe. Usually it will tell you on the label. The container used in the video has holes to let the pressure escape - never heat up a sealed contained, as it will explode.
Brought me the pot and cooked the rice. The rice turned out just perfect. But there is always a but. How do. you keep it from boiling all over? It is a mess to clean up.
Change your power level (duty cycle). Try 60%. If your microwave oven can be programmed to handle consecutive heating (e.g. 3 minutes at 100%, 15 minutes at 60%), even better.

Love the tip to pour the rice water on plants.
But after he said it, we see him pour water from the rice down the sink
18 mins in the microwave but in what mode or what power?
Greg your presentation is so exciting and simple. You are a star.
