Trey Parker & Matt Stone on Mary Kay Bergman's Death and Replacing The Female Voices

- So sad to hear that this talented woman was so depressed and in so much pain that she didn't reach out to her friends before it was too late. I do not own this, this content belongs to the Paley Center. This was filmed on March 2nd, 2000.
Point of clarification: They actually filmed one episode without female characters (the "The Red Badge of Gayness" episode) after Mrs. Bergman's death and the last episode she was in was on "South Park" was the Mr. Hankey Christmas Special.
When I first got into South Park, I had no clue the same woman originally voiced all the female characters, she was that amazing.
I’m 27! And I found out yesterday! 😩
Her gifted abilities and talent was truly extraordinary.
As I was watching s3 episode 15 (Christmas songs). For once I decided to read the side trivia only just to see that she died after that episode. When I went research her, it was heartbreaking to know she was one of the voice of our childhood such as jessie from Toy Story. Life is short, make the most of it.
Iv only just found this out myself at 29. Amazing
Honestly if I had so much talent and such big shoes to fill, I'd probably do the same. She had great success, but she also had a lot on her plate.
You can tell Mary Kay was more than just a coworker but also a close friend. She voiced nearly every female like how both Trey and Matt voiced almost every male. She was pretty much 1/3rd of the show's heart at the time.
I believe Trey and Matt see most of their voice crew as friends. In fact, I believe they gave Chef such a horrifying death and turn to Darth Chef is because much like the Revenge of the Sith, Issac Hayes leaving them to stay with Scientology is pretty much a betrayal by a close friend.
@@SuperMarioJustin4 it’s even more messed up because Isaac’s son basically confirmed Scientology took advantage of Isaac’s stroke to quit the show on his behalf when he wasn’t in a position to make a decision like that.
And Butch Hartman made a fucking joke?
We know who are the better creators here
@@setsers1 Yeah, Butch.
@@pokemonmanic3595 If they knew that at the time they probably would have changed the episode to at least give chef a more dignified death.
Trey's fumbling through most of the interview, you can tell Bergman's death isn't something he was comfortable talking about yet. And then Matt is just staring down on the floor. Both of them weren't ready to talk about how it affected them.
I'm sure it was painful. They were very close with her, and knowing a friend you are very close with dies (especially from killing themselves), it is impactful and, not only is it hard to lose a friend, but it adds even more when they are secretly in pain. I wouldn't doubt they didn't want to get too deep into it.
@@MasonKLutz Pussies.
You actually have no idea what was on their mind. Good chance they are both stoned.

McGannahan Skyjellyfetti That wasn’t intended to mock her. It was part of a storyline.
@@KOHF34 I don't know, it comes off too close to home for them...
@@mcgannahanskyjellyfetti6854 .....I hope you've changed. You've copy and pasted that everywhere.
Some people like to make dark shit to help them cope for one thing, but it probably had nothing to do with her
The unfortunate thing is Mary Kay Bergman was so anxious about her career being stalled. Yet, without a doubt, Stone and Parker would have continue her role voicing these iconic female characters to this day. Bergman was also the voice of Timmy Turner when Fairly Odd Parents were just pilot shorts. No doubt she would’ve gone on to voice him when it became one of Nickelodeon’s longest running shows
she was without a doubt talented in every sense of the word. Her last role was in a low budget sequel to the movie balto where she voiced 3 side characters and all of them sounded great.
She probably thought the movie was as big as it's gonna get maybe and it put serious doubts and depression in her career stability. If only she knew that south park would still be on and she would be voicing all the female characters still if she wanted too. Matt and Trey never ever would have gotten rid of her and she'd be making way more money then the first few seasons.
If anything she was starting her career but anxity and depression makes even the good things seem bad
She would have been there when South Park is now blowing up as one of the single most watched shows of my generation. I’ve seen every episode easily 10 times maybe even 20 times
@@devinkemp6198 Yup, you're right. She had the opportunity to sing at the Oscars and would've also had guaranteed long-term roles with south park/daphne/timmy/etc. It's almost unbelievable that someone as clearly talented as her struggled with impostor syndrome, among other things.
Matt's face...he wanted to cry really hard, but he couldn't do that in public. Rest in peace, Mary Kay 😢😢
It’s really tough to watch. You can tell he really was reeling from her passing.
Before you go on saying these guys are dicks, they do have respect for people. Even with the people they make of, they don't always hate them. They do all these things just for shits and giggles. They make the best of serious real life situations.
Esparza Cartoons and money ;)
I used to think Trey and Matt were smug and pompous people but seeing them in interviews proved me wrong. And it’s sad seeing them like this, especially Matt as he’s trying not to cry and just looking down while they talk about the late Mary Kay Bergman and how kind she was to them in their time working on the show.
Trey and Matt are the modern jesters, and American culture and society is their court. They're job is to point out the absurd in culture from either left or right. Basically keep everyone honest. But at the end of the day, they're still human, and Mary Kay Bergman was a talented woman that they respected dearly as both a coworker and friend. No one could truly replace her. Mind you the current voice in South Park is excellent, but Mary Kay was a kin to a sister Matt and Trey lost.
Hopefully she's looking out from them in Heaven.
They have more respect than butch hartman that’s for sure
They also stated if they had known Mary was depressed (which she hid from everyone except her husband), they would've done more to make sure she was ok and getting the help she needed

i wish she didnt kill herself, only if she knew that matt and trey are extremely loyal and she would of been set for life with them. she was worried that she would lose her career but i guarantee you that they wouldn't of cut her off. depression is crazy though and its tough to deal with and its tough to help that person, it takes a special one of a kind person to keep that person calm
I feel you. She was a really fun character. Just imagine who she could be voicing today.
Don’t we all Mary Kay was a very talented woman with a heart of gold
Novembers Finest Well she voiced a lot of the female characters, it’s not like they can get rid of all of the female characters. If she was still alive I’d bet she’d still be around, it’s not about loyalty. She was their friend and no one will ever replace her but they needed another female voice actress. Lots of shows do this including elmo, etc.
I don’t think she killed herself over that alone. The woman has so much work under her belt, and for in such a little amount of time. She could’ve easily found another job with those types of accolades. But then again, who am I to say?
It was a bit tough watching the guys try to keep it together towards the end. You can tell they really loved her as a talented friend.

Eric. How do you know she's in Hell? Judge not and ye not be judged.
Eric, shut the fuck up.
They've talked about before how much they hate the first three seasons for various reasons but I don't doubt a big unmentioned reason is Mary Kay and her death.
I think what they said was a huge complement to Mary Kay. She was truly gifted. All of her female voices on the show sounded unique and different. You’d never suspect one person did them all.
Imagine if these 2 found out what butch Hartman said about mary .. they'd flip their ship
I honestly hope they do find out at some point. It would be hilarious to see South Park utterly destroy and dissect Butch.
Everyone keeps saying how much they can tell that they cared about her. I see that, too. However, I also see tremendous subdued anger. Anger that she inconvenienced them, anger that she never told them, (or anyone else for that matter) of her internal suffering. Anger is not atypical when it comes to people that are left behind when a loved one commits suicide.
Nah, I definitely see that too. and many people don’t understand that that’s honestly a normal human response bc, as someone they were working with they probably felt angry at her for inconvenience, but as a friend to them and someone they do seem to care about and highly respect, they probably felt a sense of shame for being angry at someone who struggled so internally, passed so tragically and was such a bright and lovely person and the loss of that was particularly felt in the workplace. Her pain and death was not about them and their feelings and they clearly knew that. Anger is a form of grieving someone you cared about in any capacity as shameful as it feels. they also seem angry that they had to replace her and it felt wrong to do, her characters that she did so amazingly, they couldn’t just write them off in respect to her bc it’s literally every female character. They wouldn’t find someone who can do what she did and match her energy.

Rest In Peace.
I'm this day years old. when i found out the original female voice actor in south park committed suicide.
Just for information, not trying to be rude and all, but two facts are wrong on the video's commentary.
Mary Kay Bergamn's last South Park episode was Hooked on Monkey Phonics, while Mr. Hankey Christmas Special has it's last music as a tribute to her. The second fact is that in The Red Badge of Gayness, there are females although their lines are too short, such as "That was the darness thing I ever saw" upon seeing Cartman's confederate drunken army passing through Topeka.
However, you are not totally wrong as there is an episode with no female voices at all after her death.
In the red badge of gayness
The female voices are done by trey Parker. The last episode to feature her as a voice was starvin Marvin in space. Her voice work had been completed, but the episode didn't air until after her death. The episode was then dedicated to her. Yes mr hankeys Christmas special features a tribute to her
@@UnlicensedOkie In "Starvin' Marvin in Space their is one or two females, but litrally none of the "regulars", like Shiela b, Liane Cartman, Ms crabtree, Wendy t and Shelly m. Only the missionary from Africa is female but it's done by the same lady who voiced chef's girlfriend in "The Succubus" nobody has ever mentioned this, but apart from that their truly was 3 episodes without female characters.
for a while I thought both were Toddy Walters but it's actually a third
Her last episode was Starvin Marvin in space
@@andyscott6315 Three is an exaggeration though. Yes, "The Red Badge of Gayness" had Trey doing the only female voices (who were minor characters anyway), but "Mr. Hankey's Christmas Classics" had dialogue that was recorded by Mary Kay a few months earlier. By the next episode, "Are You There God? It's Me, Jesus" had Eliza Schneider assume the roles of Sharon Marsh and Carol McCormick as well as numerous background characters, and she would gradually add more of Mary Kay's voices to her repertoire over the course of the next season. That same year, Mona Marshall was added to the cast to voice Sheila, and the female characters were basically split between her and Schneider over the next three years until Schneider left and April Stewart took over.
It is true that it took multiple actresses to fill all of Mary Kay's old roles, and the gap in production between "Starvin' Marvin in Space" and "Are You There God?" shows they weren't willing to audition right away. Nobody's ever gonna top Mary Kay, but I'm grateful others did step up and keep the show going.
She was so beautiful and so talented 💔😢😥
I think of Mary a lot when I’m in that mindset. She is missed dearly.
Rest in peace.

Same. I was born two years after she died. :(
I was 3 years old when she passed
Man, must be really shameful, losing Mary.
Did Mary Kay Bergman do voice acting in the episode "Starvin' Marvin In Space"?
I have heard that the episode "Hooked On Monkey Fonics" was her last episode, but "Starvin' Marvin In Space" lists her as a voice actor, and that episode is said to be "the last episode to use her dialogue" and "in memory" of her, so I am a bit confused.
i believe starvin marvin in space may have been the most recent episode she recorded lines for in regards to her passing. they pieced together recordings from the christmas album for their mr hanky christmas special, but starvin marvin in space is the last episode she recorded, i think!
dude asking the question sounds like john malkovich lol
I never heard of this woman.
Trey Parker and Matt Stone were best friends of Mary Kay Bergman not like Butch Hartman.
They were "lucky" that she was on the show 2, 3 years, so people haven't got used to her, and now people like this new voice actor, and many childer don't even remember her.
actually many people do remember her and prefer her voice over the new ones, which really arent that good. thats why you barely see any of the female characters coming out anymore. cause none of the new actors were able to imitate mary kay thats how talented she was
@Kyel ! i don't think bebe was a character at the time she was working for the show. plus most people start the beginning and get accustomed to her voices, and then there's a sudden new one. personally i like mary kay's voices (they fit the character better) better but the new ones aren't bad.
@Kyel ! she fit so well in the early seasons while they were littler. i think she was known for voicing cute little characters before so she continued that on sp. tbh i don't know if the new voice actors (indirectly) forced the show to become more matured or if it would end up like how it is now even if she were still alive and doing the show.
i feel like wendy is one of the most obvious in terms of voice change. but then again her character changed too. the others aren't terribly obvious, but if you listen hard enough you can hear a slight difference in pitch, tone, speed, etc.
@@oblongfan1 Not all the voices, personally I think April Stewart did Wendy and Sharon better than Mary Kay.
