    I realize this might be considered and older lens, but let me say thank you as you convinced me to pull the trigger on eBay for a used, but minty example.
    The small size (in reality it's smaller than it appears in the video) and light-weight of this lens is deceiving, but it delivers the goods..!!

      I don't shoot Nikon, so I'm not overly familiar with those lenses. I suspect you will get slightly better image quality with the two lens set, but obviously much more convenience with the Tamron all-in-one.

    Hi Dustin, this might be a silly comparison, but im sort of in between of getting this Tamron lens OR canon 70-200 L F4 IS. I know its not apple to apple, the first have broader range of focal length but I assumed in the range of 70-200 the canon one would be a clear winner i guess?
    Essentially I need some good zoom lens that is light, affordable but good IQ. I used to own the older version of tamron 28-300 and unfortunately I must say a big let down so that I ended up selling it. I used mainly prime lens, but every so and often I really wish i could just carry one lens for travelling and just focus on "taking pictures" rather than having to carry few different primes in my backpack and keep changing lens. I tried this Tamron PZD on the shop one day and I found that the AF is quite fast - i noticed its definitely faster than the older version, but I wish I can assess the lens a bit more.
    Now, with all that, I would like to know what's your opinion based on your experiences about this tamron lens. Do you use it often? Would you use this lens lets say for commercial purpose / paid jobs?

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  7 лет назад

      I wouldn't use it for commercial work, myself. If you are considering that, you should invest in the Canon. If you want a great travel option, then this is a great choice!

And preferably a canon DSLR that does video and photos....Thanks....the canon DSLR at around $ 700 max .

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  4 года назад +1

      This would probably work fine, though if your primary goal is always shooting telephoto, why not buy a telephoto? The Canon 70-300mm IS II is a good lens, as is the Tamron 100-400mm VC lens. These are both reasonably priced options and will provide better telephoto performance. The strength of the 28-300 is for travel or those that want to use one lens for everything. Most of Canon's DLSRs like the T7i or similar cameras will work fine for your purposes.

    Appreciate your videos and thoughts. Question: If you could have only one lens of these three lenses --Tamron 18-200 VC, 16-300 PZD VC or 28-300 PZD VC -- which would you choose for best overall image quality (with an appropriate body (assuming you have both aps and FF cameras); weight, price and size are not issues)?

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  6 лет назад +1

      The newer lenses from Tamron and Sigma are compatible with their USB docks, which allow you to apply firmware updates from home. That helps a lot with compatibility. This lens is not designed for the Tap-In, unfortunately. My experience says that Tamron always comes up with a compatibility fix, though this lens would require sending it to them for them to supply the free firmware update.

      Thank you for your prompt response, but what you mean by hair sharper, is it the sharper in human part and not others(landscape, nature photography) !!?

      Thanks again 😀

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  5 лет назад +2

      Sorry, that's an English idiom. Hair = a slight bit, like the width of a hair. The Canon is a little sharper across equivalent focal range, but the Tamron has a much larger zoom range. The Tamron is very quiet to focus.

    A Sony a-mount version of this lens doesn't offer Vibration Compensation because it interferes with the sensor stabilization of sony a-mount cameras.
    This is common with all Tamron and Sigma a-mount lenses that are designed with image stabilization.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  4 года назад

      That's true, and probably the reason that all of their releases for Sony FE are coming without VC, too.

  • @rickd248
    @rickd248 8 лет назад +1

    I've had one for a couple years now. It's a very good lens but that lock is there for a reason. After you use the lens for a while it will loosen up and you get plenty of creep when aiming down. Of course this does not happen while you are holding and using the lens but if you are walking and holding your camera facing down the lens will creep.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  8 лет назад

      +rickd248 That isn't unusual once a lens is "broken in", although the front element is pretty light on this lens so I'm a little surprised you are experiencing some significant creep.

    • @rickd248
      @rickd248 8 лет назад

      +Dustin Abbott I have two of the old model, one for my wife, both have the same propensity to drop when facing down. I'm wondering if this isn't part of the reason for a second gen lens?

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  8 лет назад

      +rickd248 Ahh, you are referring to the older one. I would be very surprised to see the new one behave like that. It's nicely constructed.

    • @rickd248
      @rickd248 8 лет назад +1

      Dustin Abbott You know, I've used it so much I simply keep the camera level when not being used or I slip the lock on. I'm such a cheapskate I'll wear this one out before I go look at the new model. Of course by then we'll be into the 3rd or 4th gen model. LOL. I really do love this lens and have gotten used to this one short fall. When I used the Canon F-1 I used the Tamron Adapt All-2 lenses and had good results with them also. Since it's just a hobby now I just can't justify spending top dollar on a lens now day. Being retired does have some drawbacks.
      Anyway, I enjoyed your review and will look for any others you may have out. Happy shooting my friend!

    My AF suddenly stopped, so i'd sent it to Tamron for repair next month. Otherwise, it's a nice superzoom lens, or as we do call it into germany here "soupzoom" lenses. I never had a zoom with more than 3x zoomfactor, because of (too many) optical compromises into image quality terms.

      i read where someone asked you about the Nikon vs the Tamron in this review and you favored the Tamron, the price certainly now makes it a no brainer, i had an experience recently with the Grey market.......MY experience of buying a camera lens on the gray market while living outside the U.S. I live in other countries about 6 months of each year....At this time i am still living outside the U.S....... i bought a SONY lens on the internet through Amazon that cost 798.00 in the U.S. Market ..... The Gray market price was 573.00 Without warranty, no warranty on lens but a good return policy through Amazon, this was posted on the website…..Company wanted 23.00 for fast delivery, i paid but did not get the faster service……when item finally arrived, Mailman came to my apartment with paper work, not the item, he gave me paper work with the final cost….Paper work stated that the Ukraine government demanded i must pay 6.00 for mailman to come to my house, plus, i must go to address to pick up item, also they will collect from me 118.00 custom tax plus another 6.00 added on to collect this money and process the delivery……I then received a letter in Russian from Sony located in Japan, mailed from Japan explaining to me that i violated them by my purchase and they will never warranty the lens and other nasty statements to me......, ANYWAY…..We went to the place to pick up item, after waiting 30 minutes i was given paper work to fill out and was told that i must go to any Ukraine bank and pay the Customs fees they requested along with the other feesa then come back and give them the completed paper work and proof i paid, then they will release the lens to me…..i thought about all this and what i needed to do….i said to myself i will only be saving about 100.00 with no warranty when all is said and done plus all my time and travel cost to complete this transaction…..i decided it was not worth all this just to save about 100.00….PLUS when this lens goes on sale in the U.S. my savings would be nothing, so the heck with it……i now know there is nothing to save by buying a item on the gray market through the mail when you are outside the U.S.……..i called Amazon, they apologized for my experience and credited my credit card back for the full amount The seller did business through Amazon, they approved …..Maybe my experience would have been different if i was in America, buying an item through the Grey Market, i do not know... Smile!

    This one vs Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM ? I'm kinda newb entry in photography so this gonna be my first len. Body is Canon 600d/Rebel T3i

    • @DustinAbbottTWI

      Those are two very different lenses. The 70-200 f/4 will have better image quality, but 70mm is not very wide (particularly on a crop body) and will be frustrating at times to use. No IS means that it will be fairly hard to handhold on the long end, too. I'd go with the 28-300

    • @tothanh1994
      @tothanh1994 8 лет назад

      thanks for the quick reply yeah I realized the tamron is an all-purpose len. It's an excellent all-around len thou but I'm into wildlife stuff so is it worth it to get better image quality with the canon 70-200? assume that I buy the IS version

    • @DustinAbbottTWI

      *****
      That's a different story, then. The IS version is definitely excellent. If you primarily do wildlife, you might even consider one of the 150-600 lenses from Tamron or Sigma. A nice budget telephoto is the Tamron 70-300 VC...a very underrated lens.

      I just tried out version without IS and it is very easy to use doesn't feel like IS is necessary, pictures are very clean handheld even with 200mm zoomed in, tripod may be needed only in indoor shooting or just increasing ISO. Would you invest in f4 with IS or f2.8 without IS. I feel like f2.8 will probably help you more in low light settings by increasing your shutter speed. IS only help to deal with hand shakiness and doesn't help at all with shutter speed. That's just my opinion

      It's true that IS only helps with hand shakiness, but it does make a big difference in the practical use of a lens. But if I had a choice between bigger aperture or IS, I would probably go for the f/2.8 non IS. Just know that you are going to get a considerably heavier lens.

    Is it compatible with a Canon EOS Rebel T5?

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  8 лет назад

      +Sarabi Scruggs It is, though 28mm is not particularly wide on an APS-C camera like your T5. The 300mm on the long end is really nice, though.

      Thank you! What would you suggest as good macro lens for my camera? Another youtuber suggested a 18-200MM F/3.5-6.3 Di II VC would be good for mine. What do you think?

    • @DustinAbbottTWI

      Sarabi Scruggs
      That's fine if you are wanting an "all in one" solution. The best actual macro lens for you would probably be either the EF-S 60mm f/2.8 or the Tamron 90mm f/2.8 VC (a bit more expensive, but adds an image stabilizer. The EF-S 60mm f/2.8 doubles as a nice portrait focal length on a APS-C body like yours, too.

    I am using this Lens with a Canon 70D . I was expecting to use this Lens for fast Wildlife Photography and Sport shots. I am totaly disapointed. At the range of 300 mm the focusing system is so slow that it is impossible to take sharp fotos from birds in flight by 1/2000 or fast moving persons (Sport). In 7 frame/s the Autofokus is to slow resulting of alot of missed shots. It tried alot of settings but i couldn't find the right option for sharp and fast situation ! In this case the Kit lens of Canon 18-135 mm is dooing a better Job.The biggest advantage is the compact design so it is very confortable to take on travel.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  4 года назад +1

      A lens like this is not designed for specialized use; it is designed for a doing a lot of things reasonably well. Also, you can't really compare a lens that only reaches to 135mm with a lens that reaches to 300mm. The stresses on a focus system are not at all the same. You need a dedicated telephoto lens if you want to do BIF.

      @@DustinAbbottTWI Thank you Mr. Abott for your evaluation. I will try to use the Tamron Lens ‘’in a normal way’’ without trying to push it to the limit. I will use TV / AV and see what how the lens react . I noticed that this lens reached a maximum of sharpness at f10 .
      It is a pleasure to share with you these informations and i will continue to follow your channel. Best regards (from Switzerland)

    Hi Dustin, another video on RUclips (ruclips.net/video/8QmUpGvJbK4/видео.html) compared this lens side-by-side with the Canon EF 100-400 L lens, and noticed he had to zoom the Canon to only 210mm to match the field of view of the Tamron at 300mm. Have you noticed this, or made such comparisons?

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  7 лет назад +3

      I suspect that was done at close distance. A lot of lenses exhibit "focus breathing" at close distances and measure shorter than their stated focal length. At infinity the lens will be close to 300mm. Lens makers only have a certain margin where they can "round up" a focal length to established norms like 300mm, and 210mm is WAY outside of that margin.
