@@ThaVillaMan 200hz crossover subwoofer and 8 inch mids + 1.25 inch silk dome tweeters.. Shall I apply this crossover? It really makes my mid highs stress free and let subwoofer handle all the load
You called it with the 60hz recommendation for the RP600M. Before putting some hours on them they were fine at 80hz right out the box but over time i wondered why the bass-midbass punch was subdued and i realized because of my lowered subwoofer levels 70hz had no presence. Now I'm really loving 60hz for music listening but will the experience be the same for movies, guess I'll see this weekend. Again great call👍🏿
I don't always comment on videos that I like but this one in particular was very good thank you for all your information you seem to be very well knowledge on the subject matter.
Great video!! I have a couple of questions. Here is my setup: Denon 4700 Klipsch R-625FA Dolby Atmos Floor stand speakers Klipsch RP- 504C II center channel Klipsch R-41M Bookshelf speakers Klipsch R-12SW subwoofer 1-What are your suggestions for the crossover settings? 2- What are your suggestions for the db level for all the speakers? This is where I am confused.
Hey! The calibration should determine your db level for your speakers as well as the delay. Set your crossover to 80Hz movies. Music is a personal preference thing
Klipsch rp-502s has frequency response: 58-25kHz +/- 3dB. Klipsch rp-504c has frequency response: 58-25kHz +/- 3dB. In your opinion, what is the best crossover setting for these 2 speakers? thanks you for info!!! Great job!!
Thanks for the educational video. Here is a quick question regarding the "cut off at the knees" argument for the tower speakers that go down to 32 Hz. Couldn't one make the same argument for the sub? In other words, if my sub goes up to 150 Hz, why cut it off at the knees by setting the crossover all the way down at 60 Hz? Why not set my crossover to 100 Hz, and let my powered sub handle more of the bass that it is specifically designed to handle, which also frees up my receiver's power to focus more on the mid and high range frequencies handled by my front main speakers? (Assuming there aren't directional issues by setting the crossover that high.) Thank in advance if you respond.
Great video but there are two other considerations for setting subwoofer crossover- Ultimate linear output and amplifier power requirements. Bass places the most demand on speaker drivers and amplifier power. While using the lower range of your speaker could work acoustically at lower levels, subwoofers are made with higher power internals amplifiers and drivers engineered to be more linear at lower frequencies and higher output. Having higher crossover points and setting your speakers to small can greatly increase your lower bass output and accuracy as well as clean up the mid bass output of your mains. A side benefit is that power-hungry bass frequencies are handled by your sub's larger specialized internal amp lowering the power requirements from your receiver.
Exactly my thoughts. I was shocked when he said his mains were crossed at 60 or 40 on what appears to be a Denon AVR. Unless he's running a separate amp, wouldn't that be robbing some major wattage from an AVR that likely advertises misleading watts per channel to begin with? I don't have a separate amp (yet) so I let my subs cover the majority of the lows to get the most watts from the speakers and cleanest sound/ no clipping at high volume.
Really great points here! I prefer an 80 hz crossover for my front towers during movies, but for 2-channel stuff and music, I prefer setting them to large. This is especially because even though they only go down to 45 hz, my receiver doesn't cut off the subwoofer for the front LRs like it does for all the other channels when setting them to large.
When you watch movies do you leave your crossover at 80hz or do you Frequently change it because I have tower speakers as well but have always been confused about the crossover part. Because at the moment I have the front tower speakers set at large at 80hz is that good or do I need to change it. And my center and surround speakers are set at 80hz as well.
@@pastaman6099 I came across your video off Google. And my crossover's I never messed with till I got to thinking something has to give because all the talking was going through my powered sub as well. And I just got to the point ok got to google to find out why. And gotcha on 90hz.
Thank you for the information. It was a huge help in setting up my Onkyo TX-NR686 which I recently purchased and completely hated. After trying out different settings, the unit sounds good while watching movies.
Awesome video! Have some Klipsch r28f for my front towers - had them at 80Hz crossover and just took them down to 40 (spec sheet says 35Hz-24kHz with LFE of 32Hz) and set my Klipsch sub (10” wireless one - can’t remember exact model number) to 120Hz. Looking forward to listening after the adjustment! Probably won’t be able to tell much of a difference given my untrained ear, but it’s good to know they’ll be setup as optimally as they can! Thanks!
Hey man, I have a Denon AVR-S750H receiver, Klipsch R-25C center and Onkyo SKS-HT750 for the rest of my 7.1 speakers. What crossover frequency do you recommend? Thanks for the video!
My system is 5.2, I set all the speakers in small 80hz. My speakers are pure acustics brand, my front speakers bolkshelfes: 42-22khz, central: 62-22khz, surrounds: 72-22khz, dual subwoofers: Polk audio psw10. What crossover adjustment should I leave in the system?
Your videos are very informative, thank you. This is my setup and I am struggling with the crossover and I cannot seem to get it right, what would you recommend i set as the corssover on the AVR and subwoofer if my equipment is as follows: Centre: Jamo S 81 CEN (FREQUENCY RESPONSE 71Hz - 26kHz / CROSSOVER 2kHz) L&R Front: Jamo S 805 (FREQUENCY RESPONSE 49Hz - 26kHz / CROSSOVER 2kHz) L&R Back Surround: Jamo S 801 (FREQUENCY RESPONSE 76Hz - 26kHz / CROSSOVER 2kHz) SubWoofer: Jamo Sub-210 (Frequency Range [Hz] 38 - 200 / Impedance [K Ohm] 22 / Cut off Frequency [Hz] 40 - 200 / Phase 0 to -180) AVR: Pioneer VSX-935

Hi Very nice video and does the cross over depends on the driver size? I am having Onkyo HT-S5915. Could you please help me the crossover settings for this home theatre. Thanks in advance 🙂
Hi VillaMan i have some question it is ok that I put my front speaker Left and Right into full ban because I heard better sound on that settings. Thanks God bless
This is a great video! Question since you have a Denon. I have a DRA 800H, Def Tech Pro Sub 800 and 2 Martin Logan Motion 16’s. I have been playing around with the sub crossover settings for about a year and still don’t think they are right. What are thoughts if you don’t mind? Thanks!
Very useful video indeed. I am using Klipsch RP6000F for my fronts and I have currently set them LARGE in my Yamaha RXV581 AVR (Even I set LARGE to my center RP250C). If I make them SMALL, will it be Ok? Will there be any difference in the overall output? My subwoofer crossover is set to 80 Hz in AVR.
Great! There won’t be any change in the output of your speakers when they’re set to small. You’ll just be able to apply the crossover to them. Your towers should be set to about 60Hz. You could try 40Hz too, but that’s pushing it. Your center should be crossed at 80hz
tHa_vilLaMaN Under what circumstance would you want to set your receiver speaker setting to large if not when using tower speakers? I am a bit unsure with what this setting actually corresponds to?
I have a question what do I set my reciever at if I am running cerwin vega vs 120 series for my main for the volume of the speakers and I am running a cerwin vega center channel my movies sound great but the talking from the center channel is low how do I fix that problem so the center channel and my main speakers are set correctly i do not have the auddessy mic to do this as I bought the receiver second hand and have to do everything manually please let me know i have a denon receiver 1712 and I need help setting it up properly thank you
In my experiences let the subwoofer play as wide a range of lows as possible so I like 100 - 120 hz and down and then set your towers to 100 -120 hz and up. That way you don't overlap and the receiver doesn't work as hard to drive the towers and in the process it is a much cleaner sound. Some guys set the LPF to 80 hz but that is only ok if you have midbass speakers that are high quality. If you don't then it is better to let the sub play up to 120 Hz.
I have a question, on my 5.1 AV receiver I set front, center and surround to small, front crossover set on 80 Hz and center and surround set on 120 Hz (here I am not sure if I made the right choice). How to set my surround and center speaker crossover if in speaker specification say that: center and surround frequency range 150 Hz-20.000 Hz? 80 - 120 Hz isn't too low if the frequency range of the speakers is between 150-20,000 Hz?

If it is ideal to set speakers in the receiver to small and direct anything less than 80/90 Hz to the sub then what is the advantage/point of getting a tower speaker over a bookshelf? This is an honest question. I just bought a pair of SVS Ultra Towers, should I set them to "small" and 80Hz also? My amp for driving the towers is an emotiva xpa-dr2 at 550w per channel.
Question - I have Klipsch In wall side surround R3650 - Freq response from 60hz -20KHS. What does it mean when I set that crossover at 80 vs 100 vs 120hz? Does setting at 100hz mean that it will roll off for anything below 100HZ? What is be best setting for this speaker - would you say set it at 90hz which is 10 above recommended? It seems like I get more surround sound playing through them set at 120hz vs 100 hz.

You should do a video on all of the surround formats. I'm still on standard Dolby digital and am happy with it, I use my speakers mainly for stereo music so it's not a big deal for me.
I have two questions, where should I set the gain knob on the rear of the sub? Thanks for the LFE knob adjustment. Second question, what crossover setting should I chose for my in ceiling speakers? (Klipsch CDT-3800-C II 56 is the lowest number in the spec sheet)
Your gain is basically the volume for the sub . That is normally between 11:00 to 12:00 o'clock . As far as your atmos with them being so small I would personally cross them to 120 hz
Liked your video on x-overs. I have an SVS PB 2000 pro with a Marantz SR 6011 and wanted to know or need your thoughts on this. Should I use the the Marantz subwoofer gain or SVS gain? Thank you so much for the video, some people say that after the auto calibration, it's best to leave the speaker ast that, I have a 5.1 bookshelf speakers, and after the auto calibration my speakers are set to 40hz. It's OK to leave them like that, or it's best to set them at 50,or maybe 60 hz? Thanks again!
Audyssey is not fool-proof. Change your crossover to 80Hz as a starting point and make sure the speakers were set to "Small" -if they are set to "Large", change them to small. If your bookshelf speakers have low power handling and/or small woofers (or seem to be struggling), you may want to try a 90HZ crossover

You definitely have some good settings going on. The gain knob is definitely a preference thing (after its calibrated). I usually run my subs about 4dB hot, but that’s a personal preference thing
@@theredon2 I have the same speakers and they sound pretty good for music. Try a different crossover for music or (much easier) try to set your Audyssey calibration to "Flat" instead of "Reference"
On2Red That definitely works as a separate system but those B&Ws are highly rated. Not sure if you tried the other Audyssey outputs (bypass, etc) or maybe your 2 channel system is just higher quality and the speakers are benefiting from the improved electronics.

Wondering if subwoofers like Klipsch r-115SW are gonna give any kind of distort in loud volumes while having that kind of lowpass and crossover while maintaining default volume Level. Say on an explosion in a movie or a deep bass drop in songs.
Having a 120hz lowpass and crossover at 80hz shouldn’t be an issue at high volumes because any capable sub should be able to pull it off. Especially one with a 15” driver
I see you have a Klipsch center channel speaker shown in your video. I have their RP-504C. Could you please tell me what crossover setting for this one. tHa_vilLaMaN , you have made me get back into home theater once again, thank you for your support is greatly appreciated
Hey! That’s the the 504C in the video. I used it 60Hz, 80hz and full range, and it sounded good with everyone one of them. I suggest trying out those and see how you like it. Especially if you have it connected to an amp. If you don’t have an amp then stick to 60Hz or 80Hz.
I would like to add, setting your main speakers to LARGE will re-route bass to the main speakers from the Center and Surrounds. So your recommendation to set all speakers to small then adjust the crossovers 10hz above the -3db point is perfect and how I have mine...by doing this, your system becomes Fuller and more dynamic.
@@MaZEEZaM no, setting your speakers to "Large" re-routes bass to your front left and right speakers, NOT the LFE Subwoofer. By keeping your settings to SMALL and lowering your crossovers, the Subwoofer will continue to get full LFE bass while the front and center bass can be shared with the sub. You get a much fuller and more dynamic sound that way however depending on your system, the bass can sound bloated. You just have to tinker around with your settings, sample movies and music and adjust to what you like and think is best for you.

I have a Denon X3500H (105watts) RP8000F and old Boston acoustic subwoofer 100watts. Audyssey set crossovers fronts to large at 40Hz Full Band, center at 60Hz, surround L&R at 80Hz, and surround back at 90Hz are set to small... I notice when my sub was set to LEF I didnt hear any bass from it. So I switch it over to LFE+Main now I hear bass from the subwoofer..
Same it sounded muddy the bass so i dropped it down to 60hz on 280f and 80hz everything else, my 2x 15in audio pipe on crown amp sounds more controlled and punchy set at 60hz. i listen 2.1 during music. i currently use rxv681 @ 90w 2ch which is okay but i wonder if the 280f would become a completely different speaker if i give it 180w if i buy another crown amp just for the front mains?
Yea I got the klipsch 5.1 and they sound nothing like they do at best buy. Like not as frontal if that's a thing Like the center is low and I've tried adjusting
If I set my LFE + Main to 120hz, and my mains set to large, 60hz, will my mains still play down to 60? I guess I dont fully understand LFE setting on my Denon
Yes... AND all of the frequencies that are below 120Hz (your crossover setting) that are sent to your Mains (Mains = any speaker set to "Large") will also be sent to the Sub(s) as well. Alternatively, if speakers are set to "Small", all frequencies below crossover points will be sent to subwoofers ONLY and will not be played through the "small speaker". Again, if speakers set to "Large", all frequencies below crossover points will be played with "said speaker" (down to it's rated freq response capability) AND will also be sent to subwoofers. Note: Setting a speaker to "small" does NOT mean you have little speakers...it is just a way to tell the receiver if you want that speaker to handle low freqs or not. When/Why would anyone want to do this? Rule of thumb: if you have awesome sub(s) then you want to subs to take most of the load (the lower end bass freqs), so set all speakers to "small" and let the sub do the work for the crossover freqs and below (this free's up the mids/lower woofers on your other speakers so they don't distort the other "higher" freqs trying come out of the same "cone") When setup like this, I also like to crank up my subs a little more than the rest of the other speakers (I like to FEEL the bass with movies...I can do this successfully and not distort the dialog and other sound effects because the subs are the only speaker handling the bass). If your subs are average (my opinion: average sub = any sub with a RMS less than 300W or a sub that can't handle freqs below 27Hz or so...again, just MY opinion) AND you have other speakers that are rated to handle freqs below your crossover setting, then set those speakers to "Large" so that they will play freqs below the crossover setting down to their rated low-end frequency response WHILE ADDITIONALLY those freqs will also be sent to the sub(s). With all speakers/subs set at the same volume, this will provide assistance to your sub and will give you more "oomph" in your overall setup. Hope this helps! Also, I welcome additional comments in case I misstated anything, or anyone has some other good advise from personal experience.
Good day, Sir. Question: I am currently moving into a new place and need to buy a home theater setup. I saw the Yamaha setup but can also consider either Onkyo or Pioneer (depending on their recievers and dolby atmos performance.) I also don't want to drill holes in the ceiling or walls for speakers, so it will need to be a 5.1 setup with upward firing speakers supporting the front two. Which brand do you recommend for optimal performance? (I listen to music more than movies...with some games involved.) Thanks.
Good day to you too, sir. I couldn’t say which is better since I’ve never directly compared them, but I’ve heard very good things about Yamaha’s music reproduction

You called it with the 60hz recommendation for the RP600M. Before putting some hours on them they were fine at 80hz right out the box but over time i wondered why the bass-midbass punch was subdued and i realized because of my lowered subwoofer levels 70hz had no presence. thanks you for info!!! Great job!!
this answered so many questions I had about my new speakers, Sub & Amp settings. Thank you!!!!!
Seriously the best video. A lot of information. It's a lot more clear in my mind now how this thing works. thank you my friend.
You make some great point which I didn’t cover. Thanks for that!
@@jasonschannel1315 lol this was back when I had an old crappy 8" sub with my towers. Now I just always have the crossover for all speakers at 90 hz.
@@pastaman6099 I came across your video off Google. And my crossover's I never messed with till I got to thinking something has to give because all the talking was going through my powered sub as well. And I just got to the point ok got to google to find out why. And gotcha on 90hz.
@@jasonschannel1315 I'm fine with giant monsters/dragons and such like Optimus Prime talking through my subs, just not people haha
@pastaman6099 Agree! Transformers sounds good that way just not all the random people talking on it
Very illuminating. Thank you!
Thank you for the information. It was a huge help in setting up my Onkyo TX-NR686 which I recently purchased and completely hated. After trying out different settings, the unit sounds good while watching movies.
Awesome to hear! Glad I could help
Excellent information
Great info Villaman, thanks!
Going to play this one again when I get home...see how my settings compare to your recommendations.
Nice video. Please advise if all in one combo systems with built in blueray and amplifiers are as good budget end as seperate amps? Thanks.
New to HT and love these videos. So helpful. What do you recomend setting the rp-600m or rp-500m, and rp-502c crossover at.
Excellent explanation! Thank you!!!
Thanks for telling me about the apps i can use. I also thank you for filling me in on the settings
Thanks!
Thanks! Glad to hear it. I’m curious to know if you hear any differences with your new settings
tHa_vilLaMaN - Just watched a movie - got to say, base sounds more balanced. Seems to come from everywhere. Thanks again!
Perfect! I’m glad you could hear a difference
Great job. Thank you so much. Best to the point explanation on the topic.
Hey man, I have a Denon AVR-S750H receiver, Klipsch R-25C center and Onkyo SKS-HT750 for the rest of my 7.1 speakers.
What crossover frequency do you recommend? Thanks for the video!
Perfect video, thank you. Subscribed.
If I get 3 pair of Klipsch RP-8000F for my front, side and rear speaker, do I set all of them at the same frequency then?
Clear instructions, Thanks.
80Hz for all is a good crossover for that system. Though you could also cross your fronts (only) at 60Hz and see how you like that
Thanks for this info it has helped me for sure.
Your videos are very informative, thank you. This is my setup and I am struggling with the crossover and I cannot seem to get it right, what would you recommend i set as the corssover on the AVR and subwoofer if my equipment is as follows:
Centre: Jamo S 81 CEN (FREQUENCY RESPONSE 71Hz - 26kHz / CROSSOVER 2kHz)
L&R Front: Jamo S 805 (FREQUENCY RESPONSE 49Hz - 26kHz / CROSSOVER 2kHz)
L&R Back Surround: Jamo S 801 (FREQUENCY RESPONSE 76Hz - 26kHz / CROSSOVER 2kHz)
SubWoofer: Jamo Sub-210 (Frequency Range [Hz] 38 - 200 / Impedance [K Ohm] 22 / Cut off Frequency [Hz] 40 - 200 / Phase 0 to -180)
AVR: Pioneer VSX-935

My powered sub says 150hz down to 40hz my klipsch 800f fronts go down to 34hz should I put the fronts to full range to "match" the powered sub / get the most out of the speakers and subwoofer?
Thanks!
Big up yuhself bredrin!
I have a question what do I set my reciever at if I am running cerwin vega vs 120 series for my main for the volume of the speakers and I am running a cerwin vega center channel my movies sound great but the talking from the center channel is low how do I fix that problem so the center channel and my main speakers are set correctly i do not have the auddessy mic to do this as I bought the receiver second hand and have to do everything manually please let me know i have a denon receiver 1712 and I need help setting it up properly thank you
Hi there. Doesn't it supposed to use the sub on LFE "mode"? Can you tell me why are use the crossover at 120hz? Great video BTW. Keep the good work.
Dialogue will sound too thin.
80 - 120 Hz isn't too low if the frequency range of the speakers is between 150-20,000 Hz?
this is what i have and could use your advice in setting the crossovers
Denon AV S940 Monitor Audio Bronze 6 Towers go down to 34hz Monitor Audio Center goes down to 60hz and 4 Monitor Audio bookshelves surround goes down to 55 hz My sub is Polk 10" how should i set the cross over and how should i set up my sub with LFE and volume on the back, What about LFE or LFE /Main and should i set to large for front towers Thank you
Great vid! Most helpful!!
Hi vilaman, what is the recommended crossover settings for rp260f, rp440c, rp240s?

Very good .
You should do a video on all of the surround formats. I'm still on standard Dolby digital and am happy with it, I use my speakers mainly for stereo music so it's not a big deal for me.
Very helpful. So, is it the crossover point that the new receivers with the little microphone room/speaker setup systems are reading?
Correct. It’s playing the test tone to see how capable your speakers are
Well done. My fronts go down to 20 Hz, but I cross them at 40 Hz. I cross my surrounds at 60 Hz.
great video, learned a lot. thx
Great to hear!
Right now Marantz is at -11db and SVS is at 4 dB. All my x-overs for speakers are at 60/80/90 hrtz and subwoofer is at 120hrtz.
Use the gain in your receiver first, since it’s negative
Great Vid, thanks 😊
I’ve watched so many videos in the last 5 days about frequency and crossover settings. I must be dumb because I can’t find the methodology or formula they’re using.
Hey villa man, my floor standing speakers are rated Frequency Response are
(+/- 3 dB): 44Hz - 22kHz, Nominal Impedance: 6ohm, Sensitivity: 92dB
I have set to them small with a crossover of 40hz..on my marantz 6007? Good start or better at 60hz because of the 44hz rating on my speaker? Please help
What's best setting for klipsch rp 504c, large or small ?
Small with a crossover of 80Hz. If it’s set to large then the crossover won’t have an effect
A great help. Thanks!
No problem, glad it was of help!

It sounds good to me and to others, is there anything else I can do to improve? What about the gain knob behind sub, what should that be set at?
You definitely have some good settings going on. The gain knob is definitely a preference thing (after its calibrated). I usually run my subs about 4dB hot, but that’s a personal preference thing
Well done. I used mine on 80hz on my B&W 683 s2 set up
Nice. Fantastic speakers!
tHa_vilLaMaN I really like them for home theater but not much for music.
@@theredon2 I have the same speakers and they sound pretty good for music. Try a different crossover for music or (much easier) try to set your Audyssey calibration to "Flat" instead of "Reference"
MrKenn1230 I do have on flat,
sometimes I turn of audyssey
when I listen to music I use them with my 2 channel system not the receiver
On2Red That definitely works as a separate system but those B&Ws are highly rated. Not sure if you tried the other Audyssey outputs (bypass, etc) or maybe your 2 channel system is just higher quality and the speakers are benefiting from the improved electronics.
I can't set the sub crossover on the avr, I can only set it to LFE. What do I set the crossover to on the back of the sub, the manual says turn the dial to LFE on the LPF. I'm using the pb 1000.

Especially one with a 15” driver
great video, thank you!
No problem. Glad you liked!
I see you have a Klipsch center channel speaker shown in your video. I have their RP-504C. Could you please tell me what crossover setting for this one. tHa_vilLaMaN
, you have made me get back into home theater once again, thank you for your support is greatly appreciated
Isn’t that what you want, ie the tower speakers and the sub handling the bass leaving the centre channel for vocals and rears for rear channel sounds?
@@MaZEEZaM no, setting your speakers to "Large" re-routes bass to your front left and right speakers, NOT the LFE Subwoofer. By keeping your settings to SMALL and lowering your crossovers, the Subwoofer will continue to get full LFE bass while the front and center bass can be shared with the sub. You get a much fuller and more dynamic sound that way however depending on your system, the bass can sound bloated. You just have to tinker around with your settings, sample movies and music and adjust to what you like and think is best for you.

I use 60 hz for my rp 280f's , 80 hz for all the rest . Only atmos is 120 hz . LFE 120 hz . Sound good
Sounds good!
Lower frequencies require more power, so they would definitely come alive if you fed them more
@@ThaVillaMan Can I use the RB81 II 8"bookshelf at 60hz? at 0.0db?
Yea I got the klipsch 5.1 and they sound nothing like they do at best buy. Like not as frontal if that's a thing
Like the center is low and I've tried adjusting
(I listen to music more than movies...with some games involved.)
Thanks.
Good day to you too, sir. I couldn’t say which is better since I’ve never directly compared them, but I’ve heard very good things about Yamaha’s music reproduction
