Great video! Excellent and clear explanation and illustration of the crossover process. In many cases the AVR manuals are very confusing in explaining the configuration to the "small or large" of the speakers vs the Subwoofer!
Thank you so much! Very understandable post. I had an old Bose system that died on me after 20 years. I wanted a new Bose system, but I had a Rotel RAP2580mkii with a Rotel external AMP that powers a pair of Bowrers and Wilkins 802 D3s. I was using it to play music only. After my Bose died, instead of purchasing another Bose, I decided to add more speakers to the Rotel surround processor. I now have a B&W db4s subwoofer, b&w HTM71 700 series center channel, and 8 b&w M-1 surround speakers. I know it’s not conventional, but it was most economical for me at the time. My speakers are all set to small except the 802d3s. They’re set to large. My crossovers are as follows: 40Hz for the fronts, 60Hz for the center, 70 or 80Hz for the M-1s, and 120Hz for the sub. Still learning, but it sounds great. Next year I plan to get another DB4S Subwoofer. It’s just not in the budget for this year.
So I’ve watched quite a few videos now about speakers and setting crossovers. Yours made the most sense of them all. Thanks for helping me understand this topic much better. 👍
Thanks for giving me some great ideas. I just inherit a 1979 DJ home equipment two phase linear amps one crown amp, crossovers compressors and a large subwoofer, Bose Stand speakers Bose I’m trying to get the sound correct it has a Gemini mixer with eq and an Alexis equalizer two turntables really nice set up so I’ll be watching your RUclips videos a lot to get your expertise on how to get the correct sound. I miss my home cinema. I sold everything when we moved from a house to an appartment. Tweaking every little detail to make it sound perfect was so much fun. Now days I’m tweaking my 2 channel hi-fi system. That’s fun to. I have the crossover set pretty high at 120 hz. Something just makes the sound fly at that level in that room. Theoreticly it should be set lower but who cares. If it sounds good, go with it. For home cinema I have the Sony HT-A9 system and I must say it’s pretty amazing. Four speakers and a sub that sounds like 12 speakers. Fantastic system. No tweaks needed though. Everything is handled automaticly.
It all makes sense now after watching your video.. Thank you so much for explaining this info so a child could understand.. That is a gift.. well done.. Off to retune my speaker crossovers :)

@@Kpaceguy ok, ok! I get it. You are right! I'm just not convinced with the results setting the speakers to small and crossover up to 80hz. But I see that many people recommend that, to set them to small. Even if they are large.
I just got a calibrated microphone last week so I've been tweaking everything recently but in order to get the flattest frequency response with how I had everything set up before required raising my crossover to 120hz and adjusting the distance a couple feet higher for the subs. I have dual HSU VTF2-MK5s and Jamo S803 front ported bookshelf speakers that have a 57hz-26khz +/- 3db. Have yet to dial in the distance setting or crossover yet but I'm getting very even output from the subwoofers now that I moved them to opposing corners. Biggest thing for me is that you can fix subwoofers interacting with room modes by moving them but you can't move your towers out of a null so if you have a null where you place your towers it determines where you can cross over. Hard to really know any of that without getting a mic tho unless you have super ears in the region in which our ears aren't sensitive haha.

I recently got an Edifier D12 and added a Bestisan-SW65D. For an inexpensive system it's great and fills my home. The Edifier needs the sub badly tho. Subwoofer is rated at 40Hz-250z. After much OCD tweaking I finally just set the crossover at the midway notch and said screw it. I guess that would be a 145Hz setting? It's really hard to tell the difference in subtle tweaking it. I can only tell when dial is at opposite ends. With D12 really just good with mids I'd think it's good if the sub crossover isn't too low, like about clear down as some suggest to have it.

Audio Pro Drumfire - Crossover set on 2nd marker (no Hz markers on the dial, only 11 white lines) - documentation just says Frequency Crossover 2500 Hz, 50-120 Hz so without knowing much about audio gear its hard to know where is best. Sounds great though
Bro l have to say l just loved your no bs easy to understand with no heavy techie explanation of things! 🙂 Like you making your voice go lower in trying to explain things 🙂 It was even easy for an old technophobe noob like me to follow 🤣 Just a couple of questions please on your opinion with what frequency settings to use on my speaker set up…. Fronts, which I’ve had since you were born, are like massive bass heavy Cerwin Vega 1725’s, being over 52 inches high x 17 inches deep with each having a 15 inch and a 17 inch bass drivers, 2 mids and a tweeter, so what would u set the crossovers on those? I’ve looked for the instruction manuals and also on line but can find nothing to tell me their frequency response? The sub is a Yamaha soavo 900, frequency 18hz-160hz Rear sides 70mz-20mz Centre front 65mz-20mz Rear centre 80mz-20mz I’ve also subbed as well due to the opening scene of the video 🤣 AND thanks with any help u can give me with this 🙂🇬🇧
Your receiver probably doesn't let you set your crossover lower than 40hz and the cerwins are probably rated for a little under that. I'd personally go 50hz or 60hz and let my subwoofer do its job.
@@Kpaceguy Thanks bro appreciate your reply and I’ll let u know the outcome 👍🇬🇧 So would u set the sub @ 120 mz. Centre @ 60 mz. Rear sides @ 60 mz. Rear centre @ 80 mz
I am new to this home theater thing, I was looking for some details for crossover and this video helped me. Appreciate your efforts to explain in detail. @@Kpaceguy The sub is connected with an y splitter rca too a single sub cable to the back on my receiver. Does the crossover settning work on the receiver If it is connected that way ? Have no LFE on my sub only line in left and right .
Thanks bro..im soon setting up my first home cinema and have no idea in frequency shifts or the crossover thing.....now i have some sort of idea on how to achieve this..
I guess keeping 20hz above lowest freq response is a basic guideline? Is 120hz good for LFE or should it be higher upto 250hz? How would crossover also depend on location?
@@Kpaceguy Thanks Kpaceguy. Glad I came across your RUclips guide. Is it always best to set the crossover 20hz above the bottom range of the speaker or does it depend what type of speaker you have. Mine are all on wall so are quite small compared to your floorstanders.
great video - i do hsve a question - i have a yamaha 5.2 setup (obviously nowhere near as good as your gear). My floor standing speakers are rated down to 35hz, centre to 55hz and rears to 65hz but my reciever onky has 1 crossover setting (i cant set different crossover settings for rhe different speakers). Would you suggest setting the crossover at 60hz or 80hz ? Would love to get a reply Cheers
Your Videos are so educational I have a question I have a 7.2 set up but when I run Audyssey on my Denon AVR it only shows one Sub and the pink noise comes out of both at the same time, when i go into the configuration results it only shows the volume LEVEL and DISTANCE to one , so how do i know which Sub has been adjusted by Audyssey and is there another way to level match my other sub that doesn't show any results Thank you
Both subs are calibrated together. Your receiver doesn't have the ability to do two independent subs. So it makes adjustments for only 1 and applies it to both
@@Kpaceguy Thank you so wont this make things incorrect sounding if it has the Sub that is only 2 feet away listed at the same as the front at 7 feet away ? I cant change it because it has just that one sub in the front on the menu any thoughts?
My new sub (Klipsch SPL-120) has a crossover adjustment knob, but I have a Denon AV receiver with Audyssey. Which system controls the crossover? My former sub (which I'd add if I had room) is a Polk 10" with only a volume control.
@@Kpaceguy OK. I did that. I usually listen to my 4K Blu-ray player in Pure Direct mode (Movies, CD, etc.) so I guess whatever happens, LFE wise will more certainly be accurate. I listen to my vinyl that way, too (only front L/R), but sometimes I experiment with all XO at 80 Hz or individual settings to see what I like better...not sure yet. It's fun to be able to feel the Galactic battle cruisers rumbling overhead or T-rex making himself known :)
Using marantz SR 6014. Setup 5.1. 4 SVS Scott recommended prime Tower X at 60hz, Prime Centre X at 80hz, Prime satellite X at 100Hz, eveloution speakers X at 80Hz.SB 2k X at 120Hz.
In my 5.1.4 setup I have Dali Rubicon 6, Vokal and LCR. For atmos i use 4x Dali Fazon Mikro. Subwoofer is B&W DB4S and the receiver is Marantz SR8015. Front 60hz, Center 80hz (made good sense what you said regarding center to 60hz, i think i'm trying to change it to 60hz) Back 80hz and atmos 110hz
So if all my speakers are set to 40hz crossover on the receiver, should my subwoofer crossover (knob) be set to 40hz? I currently have it to LFE but I'm starting to think it's too high?
Reciever: Onkyo tx-nr3010 Amp front: NAD c372 Sub: B&W DB1 Fronts: Dynavoice Dynamite 12 Center: Dynavoice Dynamite C62 Front high: Dynavoice Dyna sat 61 Surrounds: Dynavoice Dynamite 10 I know this is not high end by any means, but it plays very well in my room an too my ears. Might have guesed that I like bass 🤪 I wonder though, where should i crossover for maximum PUNCH in the sound? The fronts are rated 32hz-32Khz, hight 48hz-32Khz, center 50hv-20Khz, surround 25hz-32Khz, sub 15hz-250hz. I find that the sound is best with fronts and surround in large, but everyone say it should be set to small. I have dual bass, sub and fronts on.
Hi, thanks for your input, but I want to know about the sub, my sub crossover goes to 120hz, where do i set it. My crossover is set to lfe 120hz on the bass on the amp. Thanks
I am really sorry, this will be my last question. If my subs shows with my laser measure it is 3.34m from my seat, do I change it to closer or further or leave it as is, thanks
Thanks for this information. Recently turned a bedroom into home theater using mostly old equipment. Slowly changing out the older stuff to newer and just got Klipsch Center channel RP500C and pair of bookshelf RP600M for the front stage. Have a single polk 10" sub. I think the center starts at 60hz and the bookshelf pair start at 45hz. Was planning on setting the 3 all the same at 70-80. Not sure receiver had a setting for sub since its kinda dated and if not and i set these speakers to 70-80 is this also going to be the setting that controls the sub? Thoughts?
It probably doesn't control the sub. Either way you can use the subs settings on the back to cut the frequencies if the receiver doesn't. I would probably do it that
I have similar speakers in my setup (RP400 centre) and have set the x-over to 80Hz to align to the Freq response of speakers. like in the video normally AVRs will let you set the x-over for the sub and control that from the receiver end - if not, then you may be able to do that at the sub.
Hilarious opening, had me cracking up. Do your thing

Really good explanation ! Thank you !!! Greetings from Portugal
Thanks for watching

Bro l have to say l just loved your no bs easy to understand with no heavy techie explanation of things! 🙂 Like you making your voice go lower in trying to explain things 🙂 It was even easy for an old technophobe noob like me to follow 🤣
Just a couple of questions please on your opinion with what frequency settings to use on my speaker set up….
The sub is a Yamaha soavo 900, frequency 18hz-160hz
Rear sides 70mz-20mz
Centre front 65mz-20mz
Rear centre 80mz-20mz
I’ve also subbed as well due to the opening scene of the video 🤣
AND thanks with any help u can give me with this 🙂🇬🇧
Your receiver probably doesn't let you set your crossover lower than 40hz and the cerwins are probably rated for a little under that. I'd personally go 50hz or 60hz and let my subwoofer do its job.
@@Kpaceguy Thanks bro appreciate your reply and I’ll let u know the outcome 👍🇬🇧
So would u set the sub @ 120 mz.
Centre @ 60 mz.
Rear sides @ 60 mz.
Rear centre @ 80 mz
I am new to this home theater thing, I was looking for some details for crossover and this video helped me. Appreciate your efforts to explain in detail.
My front speaker can play 51 hertz to 28 khertz and the center channel 53 hertz to 23 khertz.
If I set the front speaker to 40 and the central channel to 60 is that going to damage my speakers?
I have 3.1 setup, KEF Q150 as the front speaker, MartinLogan - Motion Foundation C1 2.5-Way Center Channel and Denon AVR-S970H.
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated
Yes there is no reason to set your crossover lower than it can play. That's what the subwoofer is for. To take stress off the main speakers.
@Kpaceguy so what you suggest in this case?
@JoPaul to set it at 60hz and nothing lower. If you listen loud you may even go 70 or 80hz
@@Kpaceguy Both front and center to 60?
@@JoPaul yes
Yeah, Denon Gave Me a Great Deal on the Trade in By the way, UNREAL!!!
Hi, I have the following system. In auto calibration it always set Large and it sets all 120hz. What should I do? crossover all 80hz? Which crossover set up for my home theather system?
Premium ES 13.2 CH 8K A/V Receive Model : STR-AZ7000ES
SS-CS8 Center Channel Speaker Model : SS-CS8
SA-CS9 Active Subwoofer with Bass Reflex. Model : SA-CS9 x 2
SS-CSE Dolby Atmos® Enabled Speakers Model : SS-CSE x 2
SS-CS5 Bookshelf Speaker (Pair) Model : SS-CS5 x 2
SS-CS3 Hi-Res Floorstanding Speaker (Single) Model: SS-CS3 x 4
BRAVIA XR 83" Class A90J 4K HDR OLED with Google TV (2021) Model: XR-83A90J
Set them to small, look at all your speakers' frequency rating, and set them 20hz higher than it's lowest rating
Thank you so much @@Kpaceguy
that was a brilliant video
I appreciate it!
The Best explanation EVER 💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾
I appreciate it
What do you do if your center plays lower than your fronts? Set em the same?
No. Set it to 20hz above its lowest rating
I don't even know what your channel is all about, but I am a fan. I've subscribed and liked lol Best opening EVER!!
Haha I'll taken it! Welcome to the crew!
Thanks bro very educational. I learned something new
This helped me alot! Thanks bro!
I only have knobs on the back on my sub ranges from 50hz to 100hz . where should i put the knob too =?
Depends if you're using setting the crossover on the sub or receiver
@@Kpaceguy dont know I can change on the receiver too . Too max 120hz
@mattiasgostasson6010 you only do it on way place at a time. Turn your sub to as high as it goes and pick your crossover on the receiver
@@Kpaceguy The sub is connected with an y splitter rca too a single sub cable to the back on my receiver. Does the crossover settning work on the receiver If it is connected that way ? Have no LFE on my sub only line in left and right .
@@ArkenShromAbuser yes still works the same just turned the crossover on the sub to max
I don’t have the option to set crossovers to each individual speakers .. only one option ( crossover) what do you recommend
Set it to 80
Thanks bro..im soon setting up my first home cinema and have no idea in frequency shifts or the crossover thing.....now i have some sort of idea on how to achieve this..
Thanks for watching
Hi your video is the best can you please help in setting the db for the home theatre speakers 5.1 …
Thank you. Let your receiver set its own Calibration if you have Calibration. If not, you need an spl meter
Excellent information.
I appreciate it
I guess keeping 20hz above lowest freq response is a basic guideline? Is 120hz good for LFE or should it be higher upto 250hz? How would crossover also depend on location?
120hz
That intro better have made everyone sub
Best video on crossovers! For that just sub’d! 👌🏽
Thank you! Welcome to the crew
Audyssey set my height crossover at 60hz yet the manufacturer specs say the bottom of their range is 100hz. What should I set the crossover to?
120
Would love to get a reply
Cheers
Try 80 first and see how it sounds compared to 60. 80 will give you more subwoofer bass
@@Kpaceguyhey thanks so much for your reply... Yeah I think 80 was the way to go
Cheers 😊
Superb video and very educational. Thank you for a great video as I now have a better undertanding of crossover!
Thanks for watching
They both do. So turn the sub to max and use the receiver to control the crossover
Accurate, maybe but overall I don't think it'll sound better in pure direct. It'll be cleaner sounding but maybe not so movie-like
Excellent intro 🏴☠️
Thank you!
Using marantz SR 6014. Setup 5.1. 4 SVS Scott recommended prime Tower X at 60hz, Prime Centre X at 80hz, Prime satellite X at 100Hz, eveloution speakers X at 80Hz.SB 2k X at 120Hz.
Killer intro. LMAO! 🤣
I appreciate it
Definitely subscribed because of that intro! Great video too!
I appreciate it man. Welcome to the crew
Thanks for a great explanation! Keep up the good work
I appreciate it
In my 5.1.4 setup I have Dali Rubicon 6, Vokal and LCR.
Leaving a comment because opening was hilarious.
@@daveyjones777 I appreciate it 🙏
I subscribed to your channel because you’ve awakened me!
Lol welcome to the crew. Thanks for watching
So if all my speakers are set to 40hz crossover on the receiver, should my subwoofer crossover (knob) be set to 40hz? I currently have it to LFE but I'm starting to think it's too high?
You can unless you want more bass louder than what your speakers can play.
Reciever: Onkyo tx-nr3010
Amp front: NAD c372
Sub: B&W DB1
Fronts: Dynavoice Dynamite 12
Center: Dynavoice Dynamite C62
Front high: Dynavoice Dyna sat 61
Surrounds: Dynavoice Dynamite 10
I know this is not high end by any means, but it plays very well in my room an too my ears.
Thank you, it is great and useful information!!!
Really great 👍! Thanks alot.
You are welcome!
Hi, thanks for your input, but I want to know about the sub, my sub crossover goes to 120hz, where do i set it. My crossover is set to lfe 120hz on the bass on the amp. Thanks
set it as high as possible on the subwoofer itself
I am really sorry, this will be my last question. If my subs shows with my laser measure it is 3.34m from my seat, do I change it to closer or further or leave it as is, thanks
@@koosgreyling leave it alone

I would probably do it that
@@Kpaceguy Doh! forgot about that on sub. What frequency you think i should start with on these speakers? Thanks again
@@andyespenan5919 80
I have similar speakers in my setup (RP400 centre) and have set the x-over to 80Hz to align to the Freq response of speakers. like in the video normally AVRs will let you set the x-over for the sub and control that from the receiver end - if not, then you may be able to do that at the sub.
