You don't have to be idolized, only liked. A few initiates or something will run up to you and tell you that they will leave recycled MF cells, energy cells, and ECPs near the door to the bunker every few days.
The YCS guass does more damage than even the anti material rifle, especially with the energy weapon perks. YCS easily the most op weapon unless you're using the fatmana

good shit i just got back into new vegas and im doing an energy weapons only playthrough the laser rifle with all the mods on it is the best in the game it simply destroys with a crit build and the double laser mod u can put on it u can literally slap a sniper scope on it and laser people in the face from 50 metres
Fwi there are two unique weapons that woulda fit ya well. The unique tesla cannon from the crashed virtabird and the unique rail cannon at the top left of the map (without wild wasteland. Alien blaster with it). And if you want a balistic heavy gun the unique minigun at the devils pit in the trailor. Also you coulda gotten the xo-1 at the far right of the map at deathclaw canyon and the helmet at the silver peak mine on the way to Jacobs town
I do love roleplaying challenges. However If you’re taking suggestions how bout a hardcore run without using the aid section at all. So drink from water sources, use the 3 perks that let you eat people, bugs, and ghouls&Super Mutants. I can’t think of a good rp excuse to totally forbid the aid section but maybe we can say they’re extremely hardcore about only having the MOST fresh.
Oh yeah, doing the brotherhood Quests ASAP has been an easy source of power and caps in almost all my playthroughs. Power Armor and a Gauss Rifle, Tri-Beam Laser Rifle, Tesla Cannon, and more essentially right out the gate? Its beautiful XD

If you do a play through as a brotherhood paladin T 45 armour is optional as you have to understand how the brotherhood works if you are recruited from outside the brotherhood then don't issue you with their best gear they may issue you something a bit more basic and most of the rest of the year you have to buy from them it worked that way in fallout 3 new Vegas and 4

You could get Father Elijah's robes, or even side with Elijah in Dead Money DLC to beat this game as true Brotherhood of Steel Paladin. PS. You can also get Christine's CoS recon armor, and Christine's CoS silencer rifle in Old World Blues dlc.
I get what you’re saying, but in my mind aligning with Elijah would effectively be betraying the brotherhood (albeit yes man isn’t a great option for role play either, but I imagine the BoS being arrogant enough to think they could use Yes Man) I do plan on exploring the DLCs a bit more with these challenges in the future!

For the armor issue, I think if you're idolized, one of the scribes will fill a footlocker with energy ammo every few days just inside the entrance.
I did get the ammo one time and after that couldn’t get it to spawn again 😂
