Since I have watched your RUclips channel which have been a year, I have not allowed any bad products in my hair. I have learned so much from your channel. I didn’t have a chance to put bad products in my hair. I had my locs for a year. Thanks Yannie for the education. You really have educated me.
When I had loose hair, it was a net weave when I was 13/14 for my middle school graduation. It was in really tight and unfortunately, my mom wasn't the type that knew how to care for natural hair or weaves, so she couldn't teach me. It stayed in way too long and my hair just rotted away underneath, dry and brittle. The net at the top of my head was sewed in with so much thread, I ended up with a bald spot with little beadie beads there..... FOR 10 YEARS. yes. 10 years I couldn't get it to grow back, loose braids would come out in that area first, it was sad.
I moved out on my own with my now husband (this removed A LOT of stress because I grew up in a narcissistic family dynamic that was emotionally abusive), so I finally had the energy and drive to start taking care of myself. I did my own research, went essentially super natural - i.e. little to no fake hair touched my head. Low manipulation styles, weekly deep conditioning and wrapping my hair every night. I grew my hair down to my armpits before I locked my hair, and yes, that patch grew back just fine!
For me, it’s been the wrong individuals in my hair. They could be great for others, but not every hand is a growing hand. I can always recover from a bad style or product, but it’s taken me a minute to find the right person.
i dont like anything thick on my scalp. If it doesnt run like liquid, i refuse to use it. So no petroleum, no edge control, no wax, no shea butter, no coconut oil, no jbco. My scalp suffocates under those heavy layers and it makes me really itchy and dander. So i stick to liquid oil and my scalp breathes longer. No issues
Thank you so much for sharing a vid with a silver sista! I have begun my silver journey seeing beautifl silver locked sistas is very inspirational ❤
After years of having my locs done with products retwist I asked the person not to use products anymore 🙃 she told me that I needed to find someone else. I was watching your vlogs at this point 😂
I’m so happy I was led to watch your channel. I’m brand new to the loc community. Your videos taught me so much of what NOT to do. I’ve been loving my journey do to your advice. Keep doing videos, I’ve watched them all, some more than twice! You are appreciated, you are needed.❤️
Her locks are Beautiful salt & pepper hair.
Yannie you are HILARIOUS!! 😂😂😂🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Thank you for talking about the hair trapping odors because my hair collects smoke when I am around smokers.
It just caused so much build up. When I found your channel I listened to all your tips and stick to just water and oil
Yannie you taught me how to be more patient when getting my crown done i go 4 to 8 months without getting my locs done and wow my roots are thicker than they ever been
I love how you're effortlessly funny. 😂
I had a loctician who made the locs tight, not at the scalp, but all the length of the loc. They were so dense. And yeah,it didn't SEEM tight at the root, but my hair thinned as well as my locs thinned. It took about 2 years to see the effects
The worse thing i even put in my hair was the creamy crack. I had been relaxing my hair for years. I begin to realize that everytime I put a relaxer in my migraines would be worse for the next few days. I'm nearly 20 yrs clean 😅 from the creamy crack and 18 yrs in my loc journey.
Yannie, as always you are wealth of information and inspiration, Thank you! (I’m glad you left your comments open this time bc I always wanted to leave this comment🙏🏽) I had a Loctician use his “own blend” of loc gel that made my scalp itchy within 24hrs, within 48 hrs I had to rinse his garbage out of my hair. Along with his trash product his shampooer had long finger nails and scratched the sh*t out of my scalp which looked like a cat had been clawing at my scalp! Never again will I waste my money and risk the loss of hair… I just leave my hair alone and follow your advice. Thank you and Be Well !
COCONUT OIL WAS THE WORST THING I PUT IN MY NATURAL HAIR. instant crunch ! Breakage! It was fine mixed 50/50 with castor oil.
The client's hair looks good and healthy ❤
Ms. Yannie thank you I am so blessed by your knowledge and expertise. I have learned so much from you this summer and less is best. I am now ready to start my journey with the confidence of knowing how to take care of them from watching your videos❣️
JML Beeswax. I didn't know anything about locs and listened to all that bs of using wax and not washing your hair for months smh.
You, Yannie, are the best! No question. I have watched you for years and now have springy healthy locs as a result. I leave them alone. However. The loc candy you show paints a picture that if you don't have locs that you can't see the scalp when parted, your hair is not what you want to see. Your words. I want my hair to be that too. I have accepted years ago, my hair is long and thick but will never be that. Once I realized that, I was good to go. Seriously, the heads of hair you show are loc candy, just beautiful.
Brown gel or murrays beeswax! Honorable mention to jamacian mango and lime as a product line (everything trash) 😩
I've proudly had my beautiful long locs for 16 years now and for me brands rather than an overall product have been really damaging. For palm rolling which I do at home , Ors Lock & Twist Gel and anything by ‘Stylin Dredz' have been the worst! They should be taken off the market.
The only thing I can think of is in the beginning of my journey I used to much oil trying to figure out what would work best in my hair
My ex used Bigen (bee-zshen) on his beard once to cover his grays . His face swelled up under the beard in big lumpy sores that were painful itchy and filled with pus within hours. So disgusting. He went to the doctor and they gave him a prescription which helped. It was an allergic reaction to the PPD in the product. Highly toxic to some people
That PPD is AWFUL! You definitely have to look at the ingredients in hair dye to make sure it’s PPD free.
Beeswax!! And i remember me twisting my baby locs allllllllllll the time🤪 Thank God, for Queen yannie & her king Jimmy.. can Jimmy do locs? The grease is crown royal metal top
All natural black soap left a terrible white cast of buildup on my locs
Sis.. anything I tried off RUclips. Coconut oil literally behaved like a relaxer in my hair.😮 Curl pattern shot to hell. 😢 Shea butter mixed with anything just coated and dried it out. Rosemary essential oil in any preparation is a no go. But by far, flax seed gel was like acid. As I was applying it to my roots I could feel the hair thinning in my fingers. 😮Thought it was all in my head. My hair was damp and this was a organic natural substance processed by me so I did my whole head. Washed time came and the roots did not spring back to the normal thickness as usual. Horrors as my locs were over 15 yrs old and past my bottom. I almost lost them all each time I tried something new. Less is more as you always say. *I did look into the pH of the substances and oils I tried just to see if I could determine a pattern to know what to stay away from.
What’s the type of vitamin e oil do you use for your spray bottle mix?
Yannie is hilarious 😆😆!
My girl said "when they braid your hair, you come out with knowledge" 🤣🤣🤣
The worst that was done to my hair is when my mother had a hairdresser put Relaxers in my hair at 12 years old. These relaxers being put in my hair every two weeks changed the texture of my hair from soft and curly to dry stiff coarse hair. The worst I did to my Locs was to allow my loctician put blonde permanent dye in my hair. Now I’m patiently growing out the blonde dye in my Locs (it has been six months). I’ve been following Yannie before she was married to Jimmy, I listened to her lectures and followed them except the lecture on using harsh dyes on your Locs, yes Yannie, I was hard headed. That blonde dye was like “crack” to me lol. I even tried the natural dye but I wasn’t satisfied with the tint of their blonde dye. But I could see how my Locs were damaged by such use of harsh chemicals both from my youth to now. Yannie, I’m off that damn “dye crack”, lol😂😂😂
Definitely beeswax
I can’t use dark n lovely hair dye. It made my head swell up like a pumpkin.
Yannie I did have my thyroid’s removed when I was much younger. Now, I noticed that my hair in the front is thinning. So, your advice about using Biotin is on point (I use the Vegan Biotin). I also just had my thyroid levels checked before I start the Biotin regimen. I also asked the doctor about using Biotin and she repeated your advice with my thyroid condition, thank you my dear Yannie❤❤❤
Blessings and greetings yannie g.t in the house from Nc. Been following for some time and I’ve used wild growth hair oil and I use the supergro gel for retwist. It’s yellow from Amazon all natural ingredients. Thoughts on those 2 products and prayers with you and your family.
Shea Butter and coconut oil
scissors without my knowledge, mango and lime gel, shea butter
Omg Yannie you are talking 👄 about my hair, thats exactly what happen to me, my hair locks odor, and even my clothes, but when i bathe my hair still keeps the smell of both food and smoke omg i didn't know that its because my hair feels spongy why it keeps the small, but am adjusting to covering up my hair. Omg.I enjoy your story time.
The worse thing that I’ve ever put into my hair was Jamaican Mango and Lime products!! My scalp was in fire and the beeswax was too much on my locs too.
Always a pleasure Yannie.
Two different products: Dark & Lovely Naturally Tea Tree Oil Twist & Loc Butter and Jamaican Mango & Lime Locking Firm Wax.
1. Too much oil
2. Sheabutter, because I didn't plan on keeping my braids and let them loc. I tried interlocking twice, I messed up and decided to take them out. Then I figured out how dirty it was bcs of the sheabutter.
3. Not a product but very annoying, my dogs and cats hairs😅
The worst thing that I ever put in my locs was Ajax dish washing liquid. I was talking with an associate, and she told me to try it. I didn't put it in my scalp, but it made my locs feel hard to the touch. I will never, ever do that again!!!!!! This was in my second year of growing my locs. Peace to you and yours Yannie!
I was working in Dubai and I went to an African shop. I went to get my locs washed and re twisted. I was used to getting it just finger rolled. They used this tool to retwist. I’m tender headed. I was in so much pain. Never again. That’s when I learned to do my own. Never stepped into one of those shops again… if you’re losing edges and you have locs, that’s a problem.
I used beeswax and that left my hair very crunchy. And another time I went to an African stylist and they used Jam which was like dried snot in my hair
Castor oil from the hair store 😭😭 it causes my scalp to itch so badly that I scratched my scalp at the back of my head almost bald🥺 I've also tried the regular cold pressed castor oil with the same results, I realized that I'm allergic to castor oil
Wow!!! I CAN relate to this. I used pure castor oil from the pharmacy for about 7 years, and my hair and scalp really loved it. After that time, my scalp would itch, but I didn't connect the itching to the castor oil right away. When I realized it was the castor oil causing the itch, I stopped using it, and the itching stopped. Now, I only use rosewater and vitamin E for hair and scalp. So far, so good 🙏🏾 ❤👍🏾
Me too!!! I used castor oil for years and two years into my loc journey the itching was so bad I developed eczema. I didn’t use that many products but eventually I figured out it was the castor oil.
@@vwiggins9797I have to be extremely careful about what I put on my scalp because all these so called "natural products" will have us balder than eagles 😅 I also use rose water and wild growth oil and my locs and scalp loves it ❤
Same i cant use certain types of castor oil. Even if its not refined. I think its the salt they use in the process
Beeswax when I first started my loc journey never did it again!!!!!
Before I had locs, relaxers were the worse. My mom started them in my hair very young. I continued into my early 30s before going natural. Once I decided to get locs, the worst stuff was whatever they put in my hair during retwists, also creamy conditioners and certain shampoos. They caused build up. When squeezing or twisting the locs while wet, you could see the creamy white buildup. After watching your videos, I stopped going to ppl to do my hair. I had to use the lemon dishsoap to get rid of that stuff. ACV didn't get it done. Now, Only use a little oil after washing with natural shampoo. No buildup in years and my hair is healthier.
Dr bronner’s Castile soap was the worst for me. Used it for years. Horrible buildup.
Jojoba, grapeseed and coconut oils are the worst for me bc they gave me blisters and inflamed scalp. Thanks to you Yannie I only use castor oil with no problems. 6 years no issues any longer. Just will be going back to washing my locs once a month.
Tbh I been following yannie for years even before I had locs so I was able to dodge all the bs!!! BUT I would say edge control is the worst I but in it to slick my edges 😢from time to time
I went some where new here im Nigeria with a suitor who offered to pay to get my hair done as i hadn't done my hair in a while.....yall...they used tooth paste in my hair .... red gel tooth paste. It left my hair crunchy af and the build up was some thing i had never seen before. I had to wash with apple cider vinegar to remove that stuff.
Wtf? Please tell me you lying. Omg. Real toothpaste? What's wrong with people
Yannie, 125th Street in Harlem, Africans braiding places still exist!
Omg it does? Yuh lie. Omg. Those were the days. Lmaooooo hard
Yes tension happen to me also to the point of breakage to the point where I had locs thnning and popping off
5 year old reheated Homemade Shea butter! Hot stinky mess in my locs. God rest this lady's hands she never touched my head again. It took me cutting my locs a year later to get all of the build-up out.
Coconut oil and I’m allergic to it
Jamaican mango and lime loc gel!!!!!
I love your videos.
They have so many different kinds out there
Ha! Nothin!! I started my locs in 2021 and came across your channel soon after! The most I use is homemade growth oil or shea butter!! Very RARE will i ever use a gel🥳🥳
Any oils! And edge control!
Loc gel! That’s the worse product for my locs
Someone put some kind of rinse in my Mother’s hair and she ended up int the ICU. The chemical soaked into her scalp. He face and eyes were swelling shut!
BEESWAX. I learned the lesson of a lifetime during my first set of dreads.
The worst was leave in conditioner, that I was suppose to rinse out but I didn’t read instructions. I dried my hair and it got stuck in my locks
How much of a recovery has she had ? Can you show us that ? I have the same issues.
I can't tell you I asked and she don't we're about it .I stop going 11 yrs later only me
I spray perfume in my locs before sexy time 😉
Wax is the worst thing... I'm from Jamaica, should I use condition In my locs??
I need to make a new appointment with you. Haven’t realize so much time has passed
The worst for me was hair grease, shea butter miracle growth coconut butter! someone used gel on my locks, hair mix oils and creamy shampoos as well! A hot mess hair journey! Not anymore!!! Geez!!
I remember when my Aunt permed my hair then straightened it with a straightening comb.
Yes it is Miracle gro
That stuff is sticky
Does anybody know the name of the oil Yannie put in the head?
Castor oil
Edge control! & im still not sure about the salt water I used to use
Beeswax. Horrible horrible build up. Save it for making lotions and balms
It’s Dr.Miracle products😂
Yo she telling the truth about them Africans 😂😂😂
You must be talking about Dr. Miracle's. 😂
Yannie I’m worried that chemicals from the plastic will go in the castor oil when heating the bottle. Will it be effective with a glass bottle?
Definitely a prem and then when I locks many years ago someone put mango gel in my locs. I went home and washed that crap right out!!!!!!
