    Don't let anyone tell you that you "need" a level two EVSE (it is not a charger). I have used the level one EVSE that came with my 2014 Nissan Leaf from the start. It provides all the energy I need for my daily driving, charging over night when I'm asleep and the rates are low. It doesn't matter if it has to charge for hours - you're sleeping. If you plug in when you get home, set the charge timer to run from 7pm to 7am (Ontario Off-Peak Electricity Hours), you will wake up with 120 more Kilometers in your EV6 battery. No extra cost for a level 2 EVSE, no installation charges, and more than enough range for most daily driving.

      I agree BUT, some utilities offer special overnight rates if you get a wifi connected Level 2 EVSE that the utility can curtail during peak events. My US utility offers $0.08 per kWh (equivalent to $0.60 per gallon gas) vs. my normal retail "tail block" rate of $0.174168. All utilities let you over-ride their control of your EVSE, but some utilities charge you a lot extra if you charge during their peak and some re-set all your previous discounted charging for the month to the regular retail rate.

I've got the Genesis GV60 and it comes with the same charger shown and I didn't know that I needed to wait until "charging started" was announced to change the speed.... then I saw the "watch out for garage door opener amps" comments - did a test and success! Now instead of 10-15 miles a night maybe, I'm getting over 30 miles. Makes a world of difference for me. Thank you everyone.

      Yeah, most people won't have issues with 12 amps of draw, but you're absolutely correct. We love that you can adjust the charger, but we want people to be aware that the default setting is a much slower setting than what the charger is capable of. In general most people want the fastest possible charge, regardless of the charger that they're using, so we're hoping that this video will help EV6 owners out.

      @@BrantfordKia most garage plugs are on a 15amp breaker, and the modern garage door opener has an average draw of 3 to 5amps. That and the charger would lead to the breaker to fault.

    • @mikehedrick6544
      @mikehedrick6544 2 года назад +3

      Most outlets are 15 amp with multiple outlets on the same circuit and connected to a 20 amp circuit breaker. A garage may have one or more circuits. Best to have an electrician wire up and install a Level 2 charger for the most convenience. Check your local electric utility for rebates or special offers as they can often cover this cost completely or partially. Get a few quotes to ensure your getting a reasonable price. The Level 1 charger will help a great deal in the meantime.

      It would but may not really be necessary - if you were looking to top off your PHEV's battery even a level 1 EVSE ("charger") may work just fine - the battery sizes in PHEV's are usually much smaller than full battery EV's and of coarse the gas engine charges the battery when needed. If you're planning on eventually getting a battery EV then having a level 2 "charger" may be worth it. The other reason I can think of might be if you drive less than the battery range in your PHEV - you could avoid the gas station for quite some time.

    • @Scotty_in_Ohio
      @Scotty_in_Ohio 2 года назад +3

      I'm not sure in Canada - here in the US prices average in the $1000 USD to $2000 USD depending on the length of the run of cable, type of circuit breaker and receptacle outlet type with the biggest part of the cost being the cost of the cable - check the prices for 6 AWG 3 wire (you may be able to go with 2 wire plus ground - again it depends on the plug type of your EVSE). The prices of the EVSE (what's commonly known as the "charger") can be as little as $175 for a level 2 to over $1000 for a level 2 with a bunch of fancy features - keep in mind that most of those features may not be needed unless you have lower rates for electricity off-peak hours or want communication between other "chargers" on the same circuit - if you have only one EV or only one "charger" you can likely spend much less for a level 2 EVSE. When I say "charger" I mean EVSE (Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment) - the actual charger is built into your EV. I would suggest budgeting about $2000 CAD for both the receptacle (plug) and EVSE ("charger") - but again a significant amount of cost will be in the cable between your service panel (breaker box) and where your level 2 EVSE is located - if your breaker box is in the garage and that's where you plan to charge your EV you're in good luck and the costs can be significantly lower. There's lots of great videos here on RUclips that talk about level 2 charging - even the Tesla ones are helpful as the plug type for fastest level 2 charging is usually the 14-50 plug type - the plug that goes into the EV itself will be different but the outlet install will be very similar.

    • @mikehedrick6544
      @mikehedrick6544 2 года назад +3

      Level 1 charging can be accomplished just about anywhere there is access to a power outlet. The charging speed isn’t great, however, with a 10 hour charging session one could easily get 40 to 50 miles or 65 to 80 kilometers of range. That’s why they provide these kind of chargers. Since one could typically charge an EV overnight every night it is possible for many drivers to manage very well with a Level 1 charger. I believe eventually many drivers opt in for the convenience of a Level 2 charger knowing they will always have a full charge no matter how much how usage they had during the day. A Level 1 charger may mean one needs to manage the charging times. If the battery gets nearly fully charged at least once a week and the usage and charge times for the week are managed, it may very well suffice to just use a Level 1 charger. Long trips, use a DC Fast charger. It’s not that difficult to get a connection installed for a Level 2 charger so many just go that route. Once one has an electric vehicle one usually don’t go back to internal combustion engine so a Level 2 charger is an investment in charging infrastructure. I hope this helps. ⚡️ ✅

    • @BrantfordKia

      We don't recommend using the level 1 charger as your primary charger simply because the way many people drive, they will likely find themselves short on charge one day. Having said that, Peter has been charging his Kia Soul EV almost exclusively with a level 1 charger for over 2 years now. It can be done.

      @Kia Hyundai Channel So basically it is the inconvenience that it will take 30+ hours to charge ev6 from 10% to full charge. Pretty much just have to be on top of things and charge it as much daily and keeping it topped up I guess 😀
      I have 1 quite important question if I may ask ..... most cell phones, eva etc it is recommended to keep the battery charged between 20-80% and minimise doing full cycle charges, rather small top ups if I may call it ..... so when it comes to ev6, what is recommended for it's battery? To prolong the lifespan of the battery? Much appreciated 😉

    • @mikehedrick6544
      @mikehedrick6544 2 года назад +2

      @@elrebelde4610 Like you said, to keep the battery between 20-80% state of charge is generally recommend for the best battery life. It’s not really an inconvenience to plug the vehicle in for most people. For me it was always inconvenient to have to stop for fuel on the way to work or on the way home when the stations are the busiest. A Level 2 charger and your car set for an 80 percent charge you’ll be able to drive a long ways everyday. Don’t worry about charging to 100% when required as this is recommended to be done once in a while. Unless you drive a lot, you would only need to charge at home. A Level 1 charger generally uses a little less power than an electric 1500 watt heater. 1500W = 1.5kW I hope all this information is helpful for you. ✅

    Is there a way to change the charging rate inside the car

      Yes, adjusting this can decrease your charge time (or increase it if you slow the charge)

    Canadian EV6s come with L1 chargers? Damn, they hosed the US owners...

      Or just buy the IONIQ 5 ;-) Those come with the same L1 EVSE as you see there. I'd heard that Kia did some research that many EV6 buyers were previous EV owners and just like most smart phone makers figured they didn't need to include cables or "chargers" anymore - I thought that was bogus. Personally, I'd have the dealer include one since a lot of dealers are asking more than MSRP (I know this dealer doesn't). I plan on having a level 2 EVSE ready for when I bring my IONIQ 5 home but still a L1 EVSE is a pretty much a "must"

      Either way, it’s very rewarding to plug-in a vehicle, in your garage, have it preheated in the morning, and wave as you pass by the fueling stations. A Level 1 charger is a must have, if nothing else to have it in the vehicle. It’s a rewarding one time purchase if not included with the vehicle.

    Certainly great to tell people, but if someone is on a 15amp breaker, they need to know if anything else is plugged into the circuit drawing 4amps they will fault the breaker.

    • @BrantfordKia
      @BrantfordKia  2 года назад +1

      I think most people understand that.

    • @emartin1071
      @emartin1071 10 месяцев назад

      I kind of doubt most people have an understanding of exactly which outlets in their house are on which breakers and what size those breakers are. Also at 12 amps you are at 80% of a standard 15 amp branch circuit which is the recommended usage limit so at 12 amps it's intended to be on a dedicated 15 amp circuit.@@BrantfordKia

    That’s assuming NOTHING else is on the same circuit as that plug. 12A is the max amount you should be using on a typical 15A circuit in a house

    Most people have level two chargers at home? I doubt that very much., considering the price.

    • @BrantfordKia
      @BrantfordKia  4 месяца назад +1

      Well we are a real dealership, and we deal with real customers… a majority of them who are buying an EV are also outfitting level 2 charging into their home. Since a majority of of charging is typically done at home and level 2 speed is very convenient for daily drivers, it is the most popular option.

      @@BrantfordKiaOnce you set it to 12 amps, do you have to change it to 12 every time? Or is that the new default until changed again?

      We usually blend our long-form with short form, but for the month of April we won't be doing the longer form videos, so we've saved a number of these shorter videos to be filmed and posted in late March and April. We recognize that the long form videos aren't for everyone!

      I mean, some people drive for work. But, I agree, I’ve had 4 plug-in hybrids and an all electric and I’ve never felt the need to upgrade to a level 2. Why Kia’s charge so slow is ridiculous, my Honda clarity and both my rav4 primes fully charged in like 8 hours, and my Ioniq EV 140 mile range fully charged in 19-20. Plug it in at night and good to go the next day.

      Try use Eco mode to drive, and don’t use AC or go up few degrees in the summer.
