I don't know enough about SFM to include it in this video, and I thought it would be better not to bore you all with animation software jargon. But I will definitely include it if I ever make a follow up video.

kinda cool to think that tf2 is essentially a mod of half-life 2, and SFM is essentially a mod of tf2. So if you think of it, SFM is a complex mod of a game that is a complex mod of a game its game engine is based of another game engine that is based on Quake's game engine.

Valve will probably establish an independent island nation with Gabe as the monarch before releasing HL3

I feel like the source engine is the only engine that gets this kind of love
This feels like one of those videos that will go viral and very lucky to see it this early

Great video, I’m surprised it doesn’t even have 250 views!
I grew up on Source Engine games and you did an excellent job covering it’s history ✨💞

The legacy of Source includes some of the easiest cheats in multiplayer games. CS pros hack in tournaments, TF2 official servers have been ruined for years, and Apex had a particularly bad weekend recently. Surprised none of that was worthy of a mention.

Because it's not what people usually think of when they think of source. Also, the troubles apex has currently, haven't been pinned to the source engine. You made that up.
Edit: I'm not saying it should've been unmentioned, but your comment feels very bad faith. It feels as an attempt to diminish source and it's legacy.

Strata source is fork of the source 1 engine with a New rendering engine for it that makes games like Portal reloaded look nicer but that feels like Portal 2 with movement and physics.

havok is the company that valve worked with to create the physics engine, and they actually worked on a ton of other games like Breath of the Wild. But the problem with them is that if you ever want to sell a source mod on steam for money, you have to pay them a giant fee for that to happen. I think the only mod on steam that costs money is Aperture tag. Good stuff!

now as of 2021, Havok license is completely free now if you want to use it with Source or other Valve engines.

Why do you keep saying that they _used_ to make games? they recently made a game in 2020 for the oculus quest so obviously they still make games...

Safe to assume he's not a VR gamer. And, broadly speaking, Alex is a nieche title that was released in the market of knockoffs and remixes, making it not that memorable in the public consciousness.
So while it's true that Valve are still making games, it wouldn't be innacurate to say that their efficiency in that is nowere near their former self.
In nutshell. "Valve don't make games anymore"

Alyx exists as a title intended to sell the Valve Index. They knew that they had to bundle a game with it, and so Alyx exists. Not saying it doesn't count, but 1 game in 8 years doesn't scream active developer. And CS2 in my eyes is more of a reskin than an actual game. But you make a good point - it was more of a joke than a stated fact.

@@VideoticCriticdo you seriously think they would spend 4 years focusing on a game as big as hla only to sell the index? besides you can play it on pretty much any headset except google cardboard and psvr, and it was released after the index was. sure they tried incentivizing people to buy the index by offering hla with it, but what they really wanted was to get people to buy vr in general and to push the vr industry forward.

I'd say the landscape of engines available today is drastically different to what it was 20y ago. things like unreal engine being free to use and having much more features an power will make s2 a bad choice for other game studios to use, and because of this valve doesn't care to carry the burden of supporting it publicly 😢
