Realistic Graphics don't matter in videogames.

  • People always refer to the "good old days" of gaming. But yet looking back, the majority of the games back in the 90s and 00s seem to be average at best (at a first glance). People right them off due to the lack of obvious fidelity, but beneath the polygons and flat textures, there lies a charm lost in the modern era.

I feel the problem is that thing like Graphics are easy to rate, while Gameplay is much more subjective and very often you have to trade one traget audience for another. As a result huge corporate publishers look more at what they can evaluate easier, like graphics and focus financial support on that.
Hard to compare Gameplay on the other hand seams to be looked at as a necessity and once a functioning formula is found they don't want to deviate in fear of not being able to gauge the result. It's widely known by now, that the corporate world put high value in predictability rather than outstanding success.
Gamers on the other hand rather have one outstanding success than decent Gameplay of which they already have 20 titles (of the exact Gameplay, not decent Gameplay). Decent but different Gameplay is also fine, but often it's the 100% same Gameplay, just with another skin. Which again because it's a "You have 3 pick 2" type of situation, would also be fine if the game has good graphics and a Unique and engaging story.
In the end a good game need 2 of these 3 component done well: Graphics, Story and Gameplay.

Exactly what I've been saying for a long time. I almost exclusively play indie games nowadays because they're actually doing things creative and fun. And many of my favorite games from the early 2000s are still very playable even without updated graphics.
Another aspect to it is also accessibility. I can't afford to continuously buy new cosoles or gaming PCs every 3-4 years to keep up on top of $60+ games at release,. And then they're massive 100gb+ downloads I have no storage for. Meanwhile I can buy a tiny indie game for $20 that runs on almost anything.

and lots of indie titles are commonly under 1gb, i dont think ive ever seen one over 10, maybe even 5.

That comment about Pokémon S/V ‘not being innovative’ is ironic when you consider the fact that it is a more creative departure from the normal Pokemon formula, only it didn’t have enough time to fully blossom.

The game basically left years old franchise formula to adapt the most AAA game's year old formula.. That's why people consider it uncreative..

Great video. Have you read to Blood and Pixles. But I am very excited by the void left by underbaked games as indi devs with fresh ideas can now sell to a wider audiance pool.

The point you made about the Halo remaster could also be applied to the Metroid Prime remaster that came out this year.

I’m just saying, but Nintendo somehow doesn’t have a lot of these issues. Mario Wonder is simplistic yet innovative. TotK is incredibly for an open world game, never mind one on the Switch. And Pikmin 4 takes a long sleeping series and brings new light into, never mind the Pikmin 1+2 ports.

I will take anime graphics over photorealistic graphics any day. The former helps differentiate fantasy and reality the best. Even I support sex dimorphic character designs to justify the male or female custom character option.

"games that I played as a kid were better than games that I'm playing now as an adult" = "Mcdonalds tasted better as a kid than now when I'm an adult"
I'm all for shitting on big studios when they drop the ball. But games on average are better, more varied, and cheaper than they have ever been. Failing to recognize the enormous effect of nostalgia is the fastest way to invalidate any comparison between modern and retro gaming.
