I read an article where a witness who was inside the store said something like "We all thought it would happen to us at some point." That was the saddest part. That's where we are mentally as a country to where we have accepted this nightmare as a fact of our daily lives that we can do nothing about.

Back in the 90's the government cut way back on spending for mental health care. We used to have mental health departments. Gradually they've continued to cut back on spending, until now most of the people that could have gotten help are in prisons across the country, they are the bulk of the homeless, they self medicate with drugs. They shoot people in malls.

This happened at my local grocery store here in Boulder. I am still in shock, as is the whole community. Thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and their families.

My nephew works there and was just parking his bike to go into work when an officer ran up to him and told him to leave because there was an active shooter. My brother had to rush home from work and pass this just after it happened. He saw bodies lying on the ground in the parking lot and the shooter being taken away into the ambulance. Our family has been such a wreck. Thankfully no one in our family got hurt, but the feelings that we’ve all gone through are only tiny fraction of what the loved ones of the people that were killed must be going through. This breaks my heart that we live in this kind of world.

Nothing will change as a result of this. Americans are saying occasional mass shootings are an acceptable risk in order to preserve their right to bear arms.
So they treat these events the same way as car crashes, an acceptable risk of allowing people to drive cars is that some people will die in accidents , so long as most won’t.
"I want to reassure the community that they are safe" - - No it's not. You just lost nine people while they were shopping in a grocery store.
What can they do? Nothing. It's against the law to do anything about this before a guy goes nuts. It's not even illegal for a mentally ill person to buy a gun at a show on the spot, the background check will not usually bring up issues because folks have to voluntarily admit to this condition or have a government agency previously deem this to be the case; which is rare.
I think he meant in this context that they were physically safe from this recent threat. People could logically be concerned that their community was still in danger from this threat. Like if the shooter had partners that were still on the loose.

It is such a shame that someone feels the need to harm others. That kind of crazy can't be prevented and is impossible to understand. It is such terrible damage to those families and friends and I have such empathy for them and the officers that had to deal with this. Between the massacre in GA and the one in Colorado, it's so disheartening. I noticed a strong contrast between authoritative responses in GA vs Colorado. Let justice be served swiftly to the fullest extent of the law. My thoughts go out to all of the victims in both states and to their families and loved ones.

I work at City Market (a King Soopers company) but on the western side of Colorado. I can’t even imagine what they went through. This seriously shook me to my core. My heart aches for the victims. I will definitely be saying a prayer for them tonight before I go to bed.
