Watching this again , a few years on, brings back memories. How excited I was to fit the sony CCD board cam! Wow it was so "small" too! Great work Bruce - keep it up..
Bruce, this where you excel bringing so much info to us newbies and prevent us tripping over our own feet trying to find what's best for our needs. Thank you ( I've just bought one)
Ordered one on Monday afternoon. Unwrapped it just before lunch on Thursday. The camera is great, the service from Securitycamera2000 assisted by DHL delivery is impeccable. I got the power cable as an extra , glad I did, those connectors are too hard for an old dude to play with.
I am in need of a new fpv camera and was hanging out for you to do a few cam reviews and was it worth it! I honestly didn't think I would find the right one for the right price.. But here it is. You have saved me heaps of time and money :) I will buy one and defiantly mention to them who referred me to it Thank you ;-)
I see that Toysme mentioned to set your white balance manually. I'm sure your color wash out issue when you pointed at the ground was the automatic white balance trying to make sense of the all green scene. Always fun watching your videos, Bruce. Thanks!
Guys if you like a video then click the Like button, Bruce deserves it, and we need more videos from a unbiased good source like Bruce, let's make RCModelReviews grow.
Nice review as always, I have a similar camera and found the program board plug pins line up perfectly with the main board so it was a piece of cake to join the two together. Now I can change the settings at the field easily. Keep up the great reviews.
Ordered this with extra lenses and express shipping. Got it in a week (dhl shipping took 4 days to norway!) Dropped securitycamera2000 a note that I bought it due to this review also ;) Great stuff!
Just put my order in for one. This camera looks good. Thanks for the review. I added you in the comments on the order as referral. Looking forward to the additional reviews on this camera.
You have just made my day! I bought this camera, after reviewing bunch of cameras,..(gopro to expensive, to heavy,..),HK-cam not to high quality,..an so on and on.I'm beginner with FPV, but I would rely like to have high quality image,.. I also bought 5.8g 200mw FPV Wireless AV Tx & Rx Set at HK and I hope It will deliver quality,. Now I also have to buy goggles, I think Fat Shark predator should be OK despite small FOV. Thanks a lot - keep up good work.
Your review convinced me to purchase the Sony 600TVL from SecurityCamera2000. It arrived today. I came back to your video hoping that you had shown how to connect the camera to your monitor. But you ended that comment with "I'll just have to cut this off...." I'm hoping that you will produce a video as to how this is accomplished. I have a 7 inch monitor with what appears to be, a single standard AV in plug that becomes 3 plugs. Yellow, white and red.
update for 2014. FOlks you can now buy this camera from Surveilzone for around $29. Can also get it with a IR filter for almost the same price, which delivery Pixim-level vivid colours. And they sell it for a couple dollars more with a plastic case. Love it, I have about 10 of these cameras now, though I still use other cameras for specific purposes - this one is still the best all rounder.
Thanks for the tip. It is $29 with free international shipping too. That's if you want the 2.8mm. They also have the 3.7mm for $31.99. www.surveilzone.com/sony-ccd-600tvl-board-security-camera-3.7mm-pinhole-lens-osd-cc1420
Kabab I also have a 700tvl board cam, and it's hard to tell the difference since the FPV transmitters send NTSC (or PAL). When you are limited by the radio link, sometimes more resolution in the camera doesn't help.
Great informative video Bruce! i have a quick question in debate between using GoPro camera or this one for the FPV purposes. Which would you recommend as an expert?
Thanks Bruce. I found it strange that I didn't have a problem with spektrum. for now I will stay with 900 for my tricopter but will reduce the to a 200mw system. I don't see myself going further than 200m away in that (still learning) Are you also doing a home made Rx for your back pack system?. Funds are tight at the moment
Bruce, great review.I see you mentioned 900mhz is not good on the 2.4ghz. I am using 900mhz on my frysky system and have had problems. The video was a 1.5watt system which I am guessing is just too strong for what I am needing it for. It would interfere badly and put the plane into failsafe (only for a split second) when flying normal circuits (not fpv) so that wouldnt be more than a few hundred meters away. do you think 500mw or 200mw would help.Just a note I didn't have a problem spektrum
This camera looks very good. I was wondering if using a polarizing filter would help increase the contrast even further. We could get some by trimming the lens off a pair of cheap glasses for 3D movies.
great video again Bruce, thanks. Turns out I ordered this same cam before I saw your review - based on a recommendation for using it as a night time camera. Not the lowest lux rating, but the night videos I have seen have been great. Nevertheless, we really need WDR here in the Canadian winters - very dark valleys with 100' foot trees and sun very low in the sky. I also got a Seawolf, so I'll see how they compare.
So I was looking at this camera today and noticed there is now an option for a 6mm lens. I wondered what the difference was, so I asked SecurityCamera2000 about it, here's what they said: Different lens has different viewing angle and best viewing distance. 3.6mm lens, angle is 67 degree, distance is 5 to 6 meters. 6mm lens, angle is 42 degree, distance is 9 meters. btw they got back to me right away! kudos to that!
Hi Bruce and thank you for the video review. I am just about ready to get into fpv. But, I have a couple of questions for you. Are you going to do a video of how to connect wire harnes , and. How did you connect the regulator and. How would you connect audio . As always thank you.
Hi, I have a question about the power required to run the camera. I just got the exact same camera per your recommendation. It works great but all I did was connect a 9V battery and it was on. You mentioned you used a volt step down circuit on yours to run it on 9V. Am I hurting the camera by using the battery with out the step down? Thanks for your time. Chris J.
Hi Bruce, got my 5.8 system and osd all picked out, i was just waiting on a decent camera. glad i waited for this review , it made my mind up for me lol, ive just ordered mine and ive mentioned the RcModelreviews video , cheers!!
Thanks for the review. On SC2000-site for this cam, they say they have an IR-blocked version of this cam which would be better for FPV-use. Is this true? Did you test the blocked version too? Is IR-blocking better for daytime or at dawn? Thanks!
How is the latency? I wonder if there is a way to remove the actual camera from the PC board so that the board could be flattened to the airstream. I'm also wondering if there is a way to set up two cameras to so that when FPV flying you could get 3D visuals.
@RCModelReviews What I meant is that your recorder appears to record at 640x480 instead of 720 x 576 pixels (PAL) or 720 x 480 pixels (NTSC) and it shows some interlace. What I'm saying is that if you are going to review a high quality camera, you should consider using a high quality recorder (such as the japandvr) aswell.
@xjet I just checked your link....and it worked just fine. They must have been working on it or something when I checked it. Which lens do you have on your camera??? Flash
So does it mean it is impossible to use these two things together? I have already ordered RF modulator so luckily I can connect it via tuner. Do you think it is good idea? Thanks again!
@SvenOkonomi Use a cap to smooth out supply to the GPS unit or the camera? Also what do you mean by "spool, I'm not familar with that term"? eg. do you mean an inductor? tnx
I notice there is a "HAD II" and "HAD" model. Is there any difference? Is this still the best bang for buck option in 2014? Thanks for the review. Excellent.
First off, HAD stands for Hole Aperture Diode. Super HAD (CCD) featured a "microlens" over each pixel for improved sensitivity. Super HAD II improves on that with a larger aperture, larger sensor area (per pixel, with less inter-pixel space) and it puts the microlens closer to the color filter and aperture. Here's a link to a PDF: Review: Sony 600TVL Super HAD board camera for FPV
I had to replace the front camera on my Galaxy III and found one on Ebay for $6; what do u think about maybe connecting something like that up to a board? These little cameras are very good for pictures and video and very, very light weight!
Hi Bruce I got the camera today, yeppy. but i'd thought I would ask you before I cut the wires. the wires are red positive, black negative and yellow the video? I used the hobbyking board camera hooked up to the Tx with a servo plug I assume this would work if I do the same?
Hi xjet, yes, the camera works ok on TV or via EasyCap on my netbook. But as I noted the monitor works also ok when I connect AV output of my Panasonic GH2 or Canon PowerShot. VGA input and Tuner also work ok.
Can that extra board for the osd be removed when the camera is mounted to the plane? Seems like something extra to hide. I don't have much room on my quadcopter
That is a great looking camera.. I've been using a Kx131 and it is low res and while it responds to light changes quickly, it uses the same exposure across the whole frame. This looks like exactly what I want. I think i'll get an order and and let them know where I saw the review! Cheers!
Oh chit, I shot to fast. I already bought this cam: PZ0237 after I have seen your first review. Could you please look at the specs and tell me if it could be as good as the PZ0420 you reviewed? I paid my order just some 3 hours ago. Maybe I can ask if they can change the order for me? What do you think? Keep the PZ0237 or change to PZ0420?
@RCModelReviews Thanks alot!! I'll give it a try to change the order. And of course telling them I bought it after your review. Keep up the great work and waiting for your new vids. Waiting for your FPV reviews, this is going to be my first FPV setup. Thanks.
Just a thought. Simply get a jst socket for your board and do a little solder change of the plug connector. Then use your cable of choice? OR - yes, I'm a noob, am I missing a detail about the camera board I should be aware of ???? Thanks for the review. I'm going to get the camera for a robot project.
my colours are washing out just like yours. I love this little cam as its great but I seem to be getting the same problem you did. Did you find a solution?
Hi Bruce, I have bought a 8 inch monitor from GoodLuckBuy but unfortunately it goes black everytime the camera switch from B/W to Color mode. The monitor works ok with my Panasonic GH2 AV output and any other features are ok (tuner mode, vga input). Any idea? Thanks!
I have a Sanyo Xacti VPC-FH1 that I was going to use for fpv on my 3meter wingspan plane (Its on my Channel under (Home Made Camera plane Maiden Flight ). How would the Xacti (1080p) compare to this camera? Or would I get no benefit using it?
A great review Bruce, and based on this would be likely to purchase (and will mention the RCMR site), I have also purchased the Cyclops Nove OSD system and are keen to see your review - as I am haveing some issues with mine around - inaccurate amp useabe as well as issues with the flight stabilisation and return to home, and where I purchased it from (foxtech) are not provided any answers or assistance at this stage. Cheers...
Thanks for the great review! I bought one for my FPV quad and am looking forward to using it as my primary pilot camera in place of my GoPro HD which I`ll now just use for onboard video. I`m also hoping this will have less latency than the CMOS GoPro.
Thank you for the cogent review. I'm new at this and need to ask a question that may have an obvious answer to experienced people. Sorry. Were you able to see what the cam was seeing, live, as it shot? If so, what system did you use to hook up the camera to do this? I hear guys talking about transmitters, receivers, antennae and custom cable connectors, but you don't mention all that. Thanks for any help. Tim
Thanks Bruce. You've convinced me to take the plunge and to also buy an axn. I would like ot add my voice to that of the previous posters and request that you do a quick vid on creating a video connecting cable that can be hooked up to the 5.8ghz Hobby King tx. Best, AeroHeadTW
Tim Bell there are a ton of videos out there showing latency. Just search youtube and you'll find em. Search "sony 600 vs. gopro" or something along those lines
Hi Bruce! Nice video again, just wondering when you will be discussing the 5.8Ghz patch antenna- I'm looking to increase my range a bit with the 200mW system :) -682
When I get this camera, can I just cut off the existing cables and color match/solder the strands to my vTX? Any help here is appreciated. Thanks very much.
i dont know if you would be interested in this but apparently you can us the HK wing cams for FPV.i dont know how. wondering if you would want to try and find out and see if its a good FPV cam
@RCModelReviews How do you make a compatible cable that can work with fpv? the cable that comes with it is not compatible like the one that is sold by hobbyking. If possible, do a review on cable modification and soldiering, I think I could do it if I could just see how it was really done. Thank you for your help. Nate
I love your review....I used your link to the camera site....it didn't work....and also the prices are NOT in the range of $32.00. Exactly which camera do you have??? Flash
is there a way to update the firmware for this camera bruce ? i got one off these and i am getting a fuzzy picture when the WDR is on and even when i switch the shutter speed .... basically is unusable as it is cos it can go fuzzy on you in mid flight grrrrrr
where do you get the plugs that will fit the camera to make up your own plugs, I'm in australia, but happy to buy international. (jaycar dont have them)
Hmmm.... just purchased one of these. How did you get on with postage? Ordered and paid for mine on 11/02 - got an email today saying it was finally posted (ok - I bought on a weekend). The email today says 2-4 weeks delivery. I thought they were a bit quicker than that (??) Q:)
Hi there, does this board camera generates RF noise, wich can reduce my FRsky D8RII receiver range ? Even from 300meters away, the telemetry beeps and at abou 600 meters, the AP enters RTH mode....The camera is abou 8cm away from my rc receiver... Thanks !
I have three of these cameras and they are great. Love to see if you think it effects GPS. Some people have complain that it has. I haven't found that but I do have a toroid core up against the GPS. You reminded me I need to get some more 2.8mm lens. I broke my last one.
Hi there, i am wanting to get into FPV and have a bixler 2 but know electronics or video goggles, and i am woundering if you have a "list" of what is needed to start. Do you have one on your website?? Will diffinately contribute a donation to your website if you could help me out. Great videos by the way, keep up the good work!
Hi the IR blocked has an IR filter (for daytime use) and the IR filter has a day and night mode so it has a grater range of use :) I have the IR sensitive one and it goes into a back and white mode then its really dark which it pretty useful for night flying
obRCmania If you fly day time an IR blocked and if you fly night an IR sensitiveIf you get the blocked one you can still do something to "unblocked" itI've seen a how to video on security camera 2000 i believe
I don't know where to leave a message to you but since it's regarding FPV, I'll leave it here. I've been flying RC planes for a few months and I would call myself an intermediate. I have a Dx6i. I really want to get into FPV but I don't know where to start. I use Hobbyking a lot for most of my RC parts and planes. Can you recommend me with a FPV entire system with reasonably long range. Thanks.
Very happy that you regarded it as high quality, I purchased this several days ago (and got in before the rush no doubt) thanks
You have saved me heaps of time and money :)
I will buy one and defiantly mention to them who referred me to it
Thank you ;-)
Bruce thank you a lot, that store just earned a customer. the comment on the order will be there.
Again thank you, keep up the good work
Would love to have a quick guide of how to connect it all up. Thanks for a great review as ever.
I see that Toysme mentioned to set your white balance manually. I'm sure your color wash out issue when you pointed at the ground was the automatic white balance trying to make sense of the all green scene. Always fun watching your videos, Bruce. Thanks!
Hey Bruce, would you still consider this the best fpv camera or do you have any new favorite?
I have been flying with this cam for a bit now, Its nothing short of awesome as he said.
Thanks Bruce for pointing me to this camera. It even looks really good on a 42inch tv. Thanks again from Auckland
Great review Bruce, very impressive and will order one of these myself after seeing your review. Great work and thank you.
Got mine two days ago. Love it! Thanks Bruce for helping me choose!
Great review Bruce, however an important detail was left out: Is the camera PAL, NTSC, or both?
And THIS was the camera I wished I could purchase(back in the days when having a credit card was golden). Lol. Cheers Bruce!
Your review convinced me to purchase the Sony 600TVL from SecurityCamera2000. It arrived today. I came back to your video hoping that you had shown how to connect the camera to your monitor. But you ended that comment with "I'll just have to cut this off...."

update for 2014.
Thanks mate, i just ordered 2. $58 free shipping.
I got this because of Bruce's review & your update.
cheers my friend.
Thanks for the tip. It is $29 with free international shipping too. That's if you want the 2.8mm. They also have the 3.7mm for $31.99.

I also have a 700tvl board cam, and it's hard to tell the difference since the FPV transmitters send NTSC (or PAL). When you are limited by the radio link, sometimes more resolution in the camera doesn't help.
Great informative video Bruce! i have a quick question in debate between using GoPro camera or this one for the FPV purposes. Which would you recommend as an expert?
It would be too much complicated to modify the camera to get long exposures for astronomy use? (about 30sec-1200sec)
Bruce, the link in the description points to the 3.6mm or 6mm version of this camera, not the 2.8mm you mention in the review
Great review Bruce How does it stack up against the 160 usd Horyzon from Foxtec. Probably the same camera in a different case?
Bruce, great review.I see you mentioned 900mhz is not good on the 2.4ghz. I am using 900mhz on my frysky system and have had problems. The video was a 1.5watt system which I am guessing is just too strong for what I am needing it for. How does this camera do with UHF? Does it cause any interference?
Thanks for the great review!
So I was looking at this camera today and noticed there is now an option for a 6mm lens. I wondered what the difference was, so I asked SecurityCamera2000 about it, here's what they said:
Different lens has different viewing angle and best viewing distance.
Oh and loved the narration. No more silent films...
For reviewing fpv cams you should use the JapanDVR as it doesn't crop/shrink the image.
Hi,
I have a question about the power required to run the camera. I just got the exact same camera per your recommendation. It works great but all I did was connect a 9V battery and it was on. You mentioned you used a volt step down circuit on yours to run it on 9V. Am I hurting the camera by using the battery with out the step down?
Thanks for your time.

Bruce, what about the 700 tv line camera. Is it the same thing you think?
At hobbyking 1/3 inch Sony CCD Video Camera 700TV lines
I´ve had all kinds of FPV cameras. for the price, this is the only one I will buy from now on.
I bought this camera a couple of weeks ago and mine was supplied with a second cable for video and power. So no need for modding the BNC type cable.
How about the 6 MM lens? What is different about it?
@RCModelReviews What I meant is that your recorder appears to record at 640x480 instead of 720 x 576 pixels (PAL) or 720 x 480 pixels (NTSC) and it shows some interlace. Thanks again!
is there a approx date for the release of where to get the stuff for the FPV backpack by any chance
Any recommendations on a 5V camera, I'm using the ImmersionRC which has the built in 5V switching regulator for the camera connection.
@SvenOkonomi
Use a cap to smooth out supply to the GPS unit or the camera?
Also what do you mean by "spool, I'm not familar with that term"? eg. do you mean an inductor?
tnx
I got the 3.6mm lens according to my box. Will this have a large FOV them the 2.8mm?
I notice there is a "HAD II" and "HAD" model. Is there any difference? Is this still the best bang for buck option in 2014? Thanks for the review. Excellent.

I purchased this camera because of your review. Thanks Bruce! Now I just have to tune it because its behaving a little strangely.
The weather for tokaroa looks pretty crap this week. i hope this means lots of reviews, DIYs etc!!!

OR - yes, I'm a noob, am I missing a detail about the camera board I should be aware of ????

my colours are washing out just like yours. I love this little cam as its great but I seem to be getting the same problem you did. Did you find a solution?
Just placed an order. Didn't find anywhere to give you credit. Let us know if there's a link we should use.
Hi Bruce, I have bought a 8 inch monitor from GoodLuckBuy but unfortunately it goes black everytime the camera switch from B/W to Color mode. The monitor works ok with my Panasonic GH2 AV output and any other features are ok (tuner mode, vga input).

Best,
AeroHeadTW
@scottturchin, where did you find the casing?
I really wish someone would do a review of several cameras side by side showing the most important thing for fpv flying (latency)
Tim Bell there are a ton of videos out there showing latency. Just search youtube and you'll find em. Search "sony 600 vs. gopro" or something along those lines
Hi Bruce! Nice video again, just wondering when you will be discussing the 5.8Ghz patch antenna- I'm looking to increase my range a bit with the 200mW system :)

What is an ideal focal length lens to buy with this camera?; 3.6, 2.1 or 2.8? or buy them all and experiment with them?
@RCModelReviews
How do you make a compatible cable that can work with fpv? the cable that comes with it is not compatible like the one that is sold by hobbyking. If possible, do a review on cable modification and soldiering, I think I could do it if I could just see how it was really done.
Thank you for your help.
Nate
I love your review....I used your link to the camera site....it didn't work....and also the prices are NOT in the range of $32.00. Exactly which camera do you have???

Would a 6 mm lens be better for fpv?
is there a way to update the firmware for this camera bruce ?
i got one off these and i am getting a fuzzy picture when the WDR is on and even when i switch the shutter speed .... basically is unusable as it is cos it can go fuzzy on you in mid flight grrrrrr
Ordered the camera based on your review. Thanks.
where do you get the plugs that will fit the camera to make up your own plugs, I'm in australia, but happy to buy international. (jaycar dont have them)
Hmmm.... just purchased one of these. How did you get on with postage? Ordered and paid for mine on 11/02 - got an email today saying it was finally posted (ok - I bought on a weekend). The email today says 2-4 weeks delivery. I thought they were a bit quicker than that (??)
Q:)
Whats an easy way to power this camera? Can it be powered directly from a 3s pack? so 12.6volts?Thank you!
What lens should I get The 3.6mm or the 2.8mm
May I ask what the brand and name of your LCD screen is? :)
Hi there, does this board camera generates RF noise, wich can reduce my FRsky D8RII receiver range ? Even from 300meters away, the telemetry beeps and at abou 600 meters, the AP enters RTH mode....The camera is abou 8cm away from my rc receiver...
Thanks !
Where can you buy micro jst plug. I can't find it anywhere
Bruce is it better than a Gopro2?
Can you tell me what LCD that is please?
Where did you get this lcd-screen?
Yes, I agree with you. It is a good one, just got it because of this review, and I'm using this one as the fpv and the GoPro3 for recording only.
What lens is Best for FPV, the site has 3 different lens
Hey Bruce! Just wondering, was this the Ir sensitive or Ir blocked camera. There are 2 models available. Thanks!
Hi the IR blocked has an IR filter (for daytime use) and the IR filter has a day and night mode so it has a grater range of use :) I have the IR sensitive one and it goes into a back and white mode then its really dark which it pretty useful for night flying
Which is better for fpv. A board camera which is IR sensitive or IR blocked?
obRCmania If you fly day time an IR blocked and if you fly night an IR sensitiveIf you get the blocked one you can still do something to "unblocked" itI've seen a how to video on security camera 2000 i believe
compare with FatShark cam ? which one you perfer ? i wanna use it for my BlackOut H mini quad
the fatshark 600tvl is junk I hear. Go Super HAD, its the most praised for this price point;
KpilotRCHelis Ya i end up got a super head and the RUNCAM 650TVL MINI METAL CASING FPV CAMERA , the Runcam is much better too ^^
I don't know where to leave a message to you but since it's regarding FPV, I'll leave it here.
Thanks.
Awesome review! Found a winner!
I have this camera and it rocks. Great colour and light/dark range at a good price. Nuff sed.
