I just recently got a #16 for my first FPV rig, the 120 degree lens makes a HUGE difference. And if I'm not mistaken there IS a way to change the video frame aspect for the live output, but it's something bizarrely unintuitive, like changing the photo frame from 1280x720 to 1280x960. On eBay you can also find 120 degree lens/sensor modules on 15cm leads, so you can bury the camera in your model, and mount the module to a tiny pan and tilt gimbal outside.
Another great video review Bruce. I love my 808 #16, but was wondering how well it would do as an FPV cam - now I know! I love that this product is so well supported by the user community. There is a nice Windows app that enables you to change the settings without having to edit any text file, and install new or alternative firmware . There are also several interchangeable lenses.
Thanks. I bought one from eletoponline365 and I am veryhappy with its performance. For the price of about $45, no other mini camera in the same weight class can touch it.
The second "processor" chip with the X is the SRAM that buffers the video signal from the camera since the SD-card is usually not slow. However you are properly right that this is most likely the cause of the problem since any buffer issues will end up with this kind of problems you described. Also, the X does not necessarily be a quality control issue but you never know. That is why we make ours in our own factory in Taiwan that we visit at least twice a year. Also, the real producer of these doesn't come from your suggested supplier either, just so you know. A good one for example have a true 1080p camera, only the "old" versions have VGA or 720p... Rehards Johan
There is now a 1080p camera from the same supplier called the "Mobius", just a fraction larger but with a holder included, a little oblong box more or less, about $50..120 wideangle lens.
true 16:9 does not ad bars to the top and bottom. the viewing image is wider so if your viewing on a 4:3 tv it shinks the image to fit the width on the small tv. It does not crop a 4:3 image to a 16:9.
You could take a battery (one that is still good) from an old cell phone and wire it in. They usually have the same Vlots as the small internal camera battery just higher mAh. Since the cell battery will be bigger you will have to mount it ON the bottom camera cover. The camera is now heavier but it will work and have a longer battery life between charges. I have done this to my V #3 camera a year ago because the internal one puffed out on me. It is still working today.
Thanks for the great review. I was wondering for a while if the 808 cameras could not be used for FPV. A few things I want to add nevertheless. One needs a #16 V2 camera to get the video out. The first version of the #16 did not support that. Next to that the #16 V2 offers different lens options. "lense D" should offer 120 degree (which one do you have?). And there is an option to set the video to 4:3 ratio, maybe this would improve the output for FPV use and remove the black bars on the video.
Isn't there an option for using 4:3 video output using the #16 setup software? Even so, I think it may just stretch the same 16:9 picture to fill the frame. Either way it will never match the PZ0420 for love footage... ;) Personally I think the strong point of these is the small size and weight, you can stick them all over your plane for new views. I recommend the wider angle "D" lens.
Nice overview of these cameras on the chucklohr 808 website. Also rcgroups 1556994 has a configuration guide. I just got myself the #16 V2 with D-lens after pondering on whether or not to get one. I had an old model and never used it. They really have improved on the quality of these, its quite amazing.
Hi Bruce, have you seen the latest firmware on the 808 cam? I've noticed it addresses some of the issues you have with it - namely (and I have no idea how recent this is) you can change the video out from 16:9 to 4:3 and you can change advanced settings such as exposure, white balance etc. These settings are adjustable in the Nr16 setup software. I haven't played with these settings yet, but looks promising as a single, cheap all inclusive fpv record/output camera!
Please note that you've got to order the Version 2 of 808#16 camera to get live-out, the first version of 808#16 is still on sale but does not support this feature.
On your site, you mention that you designed and built your own RC gear in '69. If you still have it, could you make a video about it please... Thanks and as always, great videos!
I've seen a lot of footage from these cameras on YT and the ones I've found the best seem to be taken with the D lens mounted pointing downwards ~15 degrees. this gets more of the ground in the shot so the terrain doesn't darken as much. These things have fairly bad contrast between light and dark so too much sky seems to make the ground nearly black.
Thought it would do better on FPV but it is still a great camera for on top of the hat. RCGroups provide software to make this much easier to update firmware and change video settings
I'd also recommend it as a poor man's timelapse as well. I had this one on the handlebars of the bike (yep, velcro) while cycling the OCRT. Set the camera (via the easy software) for a photo every 2 seconds, then use something like photolapse to put together 6 hours of photos (15,000 approx) into a 10 minute, 30 frame/second timelapse clip. An $8 Jaycar battery pack plugged into the USB port kept it running without a hiccup.
I'd like to see you redo this video but having adjusted the settings correctly on the camera as the output is better than you say when set up correctly
here is a video with the wide angle lens on my beaten up 3D ultimate. I do love that a camera as cheap and disposable as this can produce such a reasonable picture. I did nothing to reduce vibration or even fly smoothly. The wide angle certainly helps on that end. 4ShPxbx7ZzM
Hi Bruce! Great review! You can configure away the letterbox with the firmware config software found by googling: "The ORIGINAL Instruction Manual and Configuration Program" (Only one hit) You can also turn off the FPV output to save battery. PS. It also sets your date for the OSD :)
Hi Bruce, I'd be interested to hear if your opinion changes about the resolution if you altered the TV Out setting to 4:3. I used the NR16Setup software to configure mine and I don't find any black boxing at the top and bottom. The contrast ratio definatly looks better for the sony with HDR however. anyhow, Thanks for your video, enjoyable as always.
the 16x9 might do good on widescreen LCD instead of stretching the video to fit 16x9 on youtube! that letter box would only appear if you record in 4x3, either way 4x3 will still letterbox youtube! the only thing is the lens is still narrow. still a good product!
I have just recieved my key chain and as a life video camera its actially really good for the new beginers, WHO dont want to destroy an expensive camera... comparing with other cameras and comparing the Price, MY GOD THIS THING IS GOOD....:-)
Sure am liking my 808 #20 camera. Just received the latest version the 808 HQ30 from BestDVR on ebay. Quite a deal in terms of quality for just under $40. Check out the new version (HQ30) and it's features. I hope to have one running FPV here in the next month or less once all the other parts (transmitter, diversity receiver etc) arrive. These cameras also works well for standard video, still shots, and voice recording.
I use this cam for live video out for fpv running off the 5v out from the immersion rc TX with no issues at all, nice and simple too as for the black bars top and bottom this didn't prove too much of an issue really as the OSD info sat nicely in these areas! However I did download the latest firmware today which now gives the TV out the option to change to PAL instead of the original NTC which caused the black bars. With the config settings you can change the colour settings also which would he
About onscreen fpv field of view and black bars: I have a very cheap 4.3 inch monitor and it has 16:9 & 4:3 mode/zoom. I select 16:9 and I also select pal & 16:9 on my #16 camera settings. Everything works fine, no distortion of the image on the monitor and it has vertical black bars not more than 2-3mm each side. I use wideangle d' lens for better FOV. I've ordered more than a handful of various 808:s (#11, jumbo, #16, #18, #16v2) without getting a single faulty one. ....until I open the housing - think maybe 3 out of 4 that I've opened have gone bad shortly after being opened, despite somewhat carful handling (as in: some led blinking going on, but otherwise no action in any way). Are they more sensitive to ESD than your average PCB board? Fragile camera ribbon cable?
You recorded that video quite some time ago according to the time stamp! I recently got one myself and love it so far, it hasn't had a flight yet, but that's due to change with a little coxial helicopter I have (Which is crap, but it gets in the air at least). If you didn't have that Sony camera, and had the 808 with you, would you use it? I'm wondering if it would be ok as a 'first FPV camera'.
Any chance you could do a review on the HD Wing Camera II - Full HD 1920x1080P, As you done a great job on the HD Wing Camera 1280x720p 30fps , would be nice to see the differences between the both of them, great video
Bruce - looking at Ebay, the number 16 comes with "A" "B" and "D" lens options; "A" being standard, "B" being IR coated and slightly wider angle (+13%) and "D" being a 120 degree lens. Would any of the options improve the FPV performance? Many Thanks Alan

I wonder if I would burn out my keychain camera. If this is not advised, I wonder if I can run two keychain cameras in series to distribute the voltage in half. .
But what about changing some 16 camera image settings in computer. Saturation, contrast, brightness, WB.? I think it can be better. After all it is a nice cheap first FPV camera to start if you have it. But if I have 16:9 LCD screen - the picture still has black bars top and buttom?
weird, I've had mine for months and I've never had a problem with it, except that when I dropped it the lens (D model) smashed against the cmos sensor and broke it, but the replacement lens and sensor was only $12 us and shipping was free.

I've seen these 800 #16s and #11s everywhere. The thing they have going for them is they are cheap and light. Little bummed to see they are so poor for FPV. I did want to use this as FPV on small scale models, oh well.
Hey please recommend a similar slim but a larger battery , something that can record for about 4-5 hours. How much mah do you reckon and does this device works on 3.7v?
Don't mean to reply to own message. One has 120 degree lens, lens on front, other doesn't. Better question how is the 120 degree lens different, say from my #808 with regular lens?

Hello, I thought you might like to see the software gui that this camera comes with so that you can change all the settings really easily and update the firmware, I hope it helps: Search google for "nr16setup" and it's the first link.

can that #16 record the video on the sd while flying FPV?
Thanks for another very informative video!
Ya gotta have the wingtip cam...
How about the ones on Amazon or Hobbyking?
Hey please recommend a similar slim but a larger battery , something that can record for about 4-5 hours. How much mah do you reckon and does this device works on 3.7v?
please add links.Thanks
Don't mean to reply to own message.One has 120 degree lens,lens on front,other doesn't.
Better question how is the 120 degree lens different, say from my #808 with regular lens?
The new #18 camera is available from ebay at internet-shop365
What DVR is that?
About onscreen fpv field of view and black bars:
I have a very cheap 4.3 inch monitor and it has 16:9 & 4:3 mode/zoom. I select 16:9 and I also select pal & 16:9 on my #16 camera settings. Everything works fine, no distortion of the image on the monitor and it has vertical black bars not more than 2-3mm each side. I use wideangle d' lens for better FOV. In this video you can see monitor image vs camera recorded image: ruclips.net/video/I4O9HAHl4zo/видео.html
One #16 has a lens on front of keypad, other doesn't from same seller.
Anyone know the difference?
The D lens is the best option for FPV.
the link for to the buyer?
Great stuff Bruce.
what was that radio sound?
Lol... Stick it on your cat... That made my day! XD
can i epoxy the chip to make it water proof?
How many MB for a minute of video?
Aurora 9 part 2...?
Does it have a light to tell you if you are recording or not?
Yes
Great vid bruce.
Try this, a glider tow video from a Full HD Keychain 1080p camera, noticeably better footage than the 808 styles but a bit large / heavier / more expensive, still an excellent aerial video camera for not a lot of money.

Mine is a matt silver unit in the style of a toyota keychain.
By the way Bruce, do you have a FrSky Taranis coming for review?
"stick it on your cat" I just fell off my chair laughing =P
After buying three 808 cameras over the past couple years and the fact that all died relatively quickly, I don't feel like wasting more of my money on them.
Can u send me a key chain camera please
Great as always very interesting
In flight video from a 808 #16 with a wide angle lens glued on.

I have 3, all perfect. But they really don't like fast micro SD cards, class 4 max.
Hey bruce, I've made e few logo's for you, do you have an e-mail adress I can send it to?
Thanks!
Hello, I thought you might like to see the software gui that this camera comes with so that you can change all the settings really easily and update the firmware, I hope it helps: Search google for "nr16setup" and it's the first link.
Hi Bruce...thanks for the review as it appeared to be an option for FPV....now I know it aint but is a great HD recording cam ...I have one and have only one video so far...
