    Obessing over continuity in film is one of the biggest mistakes video editors can make. In reality, continuity editing rarely, if ever, matters. In this video I'll explain what continuity editing is, and explain why it's so far down on Walter Murch's six rules of editing.

    Mistakes are mistakes, the question for those editors would be - Do they wish those errors weren't there? If the answer is "Yes" then it is a mistake - the level of those mistakes and the choices after to fix, reframe, reshoot etc. is then the consideration. Given today's technology and VFX, a lot of those mistakes could have been easily fixed in minutes.
    I do think, after being a musician for the first half of my life, that I often wonder how non musicians listen to music. As soon as I hear any song - my ears go to chord progressions, production and arrangement. A typical thought - "Oh, that was cool, the guitar player added a suspended 7th to that A chord". And to this day, I still can't just absorb a song without those thoughts.
    In film - shaky cameras drive me nuts, as soon as I notice it , I can't ignore it. Some to the point of nauseum. They say it is for realism, but my brain doesn't do that , when I move my head. Brain is like a built in steady cam for your own eyes.
    Enjoyed your video, nice change of pace from the "Do this, then that " videos. Great stuff.

      @JayLippman  3 года назад

      Thanks Jim! I'm the same way with music. I tend to hear all of that stuff. And I agree, a lot of those mistakes could have been fixed fairly easily. But the fact that the take that had the mistakes in them made it into the movie was very intentional, and ultimately I don't think they matter, especially if the story is powerful enough.

    Very interesting Jay. Agreed, when you're watching a good movie or video the emotion or action will zone out of these types of errors. Of course when shooting and editing your own videos one does tend to be hypersensitive to them and you can waste a lot of time and energy trying to fix them when 95% of the audience probably won't even notice. There's a classic in Diamonds are Forever where Bond drives a car down a narrow alleyway on two wheels tipped to the right, when it emerges from the alleyway its tipped to the left on the other wheels, can't say I ever noticed it until I read it on one of those movie bloopers sites, now its fun to watch out for :)

    I think one of the biggest examples is the Rex scene in Jurassic Park, where initially the cage is low to the ground and then a few shots later it's about 30 meters deep. Spielberg decided to do it this way to accentuate the drama in the scene and decided the continuity error was not the most important thing in this case.

      That's a perfect example!

    Thank you. I started acting when I was 50, which almost ruined my film watching pleasure. I spent more time looking for mistakes than I did enjoying the movies. It took a few years but I got past (mostly) all that. Now, I have just produced my first film and have started editing. The first rough cut is done and I am tearing my teeth out because I can see that I have made every possible mistake. Most of those mistakes I am not able to remove in post production. It will be a very amateur looking film, but a valuable lesson. I will give you the link when I post it, and let you give your opinion.
    Cheers.

    I agree that small continuity goofs are mostly harmless.
    It's the big glaring ones that an editor needs to watch out for and try to edit around. That's why every shot should have some safety takes.

    • @JayLippman
      @JayLippman  3 года назад +1

      That's the thing though. Most shots do have safety takes. It's very rare that an editor is working with only one take. That's why I'm saying it's not necessarily a mistake that these little hiccups made it into the movie. Even with the mistakes, it might have been the best take because of the performance.

  • @mikechudzinski6629

    You gotta watch a movie, generally, a whole lot of times to see errors. No doubt many have better eyes than myself. I watched The Shining yesterday, for like the 12th time...and noticed that the Cook, who lives in Florida, takes a plane to Denver....the airplane shot has the airplane headed east, rather than west...pretty weird that Kubrick would miss that...

    • @JayLippman
      @JayLippman  3 года назад +1

      He might not have. That's the whole point of the video. A lot of times the shots with mistakes were chosen because they fit the story the best.

    • @mikechudzinski6629
      @mikechudzinski6629 3 года назад

      @@JayLippman I changed my dislike to a like. I didn't agree with your response, but I re-watched The Shining again, last night. The plane going in the wrong direction is one of 3 short camera shots...with the Cook. It looks to me like that is Kubrick's way of pointing out that the Cook is artificially injecting himself into the circumstance at the Overlook Hotel, a circumstance that he, the Cook, has no ability to influence. The 3 short camera shots isolate the Cook character.

    Continuity breaks are like Easter eggs, true fans seeks them and push them out as memes or this kind of videos. And that is free advertisement and makes people want try to see the breaks themselves -> more people paying to see the movie. Games do this regularly and in gaming industry and it is called Easter egg hunting, which keeps people playing after completing the story 👍

    • @JayLippman
      @JayLippman  3 года назад +1

      I'm definitely familiar with easter eggs, but most of the ones I know of aren't continuity breaks like that, but subtle nods to other games/movies, or things that elude to sequels.

    • @Valmentaja

      @@JayLippman I was just thinking, could one use those as an booster

    • @JayLippman
      @JayLippman  3 года назад +1

      @@Valmentaja maybe, but I think these types of continuity breaks are less easter eggs, and more of an oopsie. The power of easter eggs is the fact that if someone finds them, they can theorize about their meaning. These don't really have that same kind of power.
