    great practical and meta example of good dialogue cutting!
    two things that i think would be beneficial for folks to know: make sure your eyelines match up, and you definitely need way more than just ten seconds of room tone! ten seconds of silence after you call action and ten seconds before you call cut is a great practice for ensuring you have a way to cut into and out of the scene, but you'll need to communicate that with your talent 'cause they might prefer to jump right in. but you always need to get at least a minute or two of room tone, depending on the length of your scene.

    • @JayLippman
      @JayLippman  3 года назад +1

      Yeah I definitely screwed up the eyeline thing. If I had more time, I would have reshot the version of me sitting at the desk. As for room tone, I agree that it's best to capture that room tone with each individual line. It makes it super easy to cut, and I've always appreciated when I receive footage that was shot that way. But in a pinch, having that 10 seconds that you can just copy/paste where needed throughout the scene can be a real life saver. Thanks for watching Kevin!

    Ha, ha - nice one. I wouldn't trust that other guy though , he is wearing the hoodie of the enemy. Great idea having someone set up your conversation to illustrate editing a conversation. I think that maybe for some people who haven't seen your editing videos that a quick graphic of Resolve Edit page showing a J and L cut - might help them understand the concept a little more. Also, if people are filming their own version of this. It is a good idea to have the two people in the conversation both look like they are talking to each other. Looking straight into the camera in showbiz term is called "Breaking the fourth wall" like mockumentaries where the cast acknowledge the camera and looks straight into it. It is a tougher thing to do than it sounds, this video is a good use of it, being a satire of sorts on editing. Very entertaining - thanks Jay.

      @JayLippman  3 года назад

      I was struggling with whether or not to use shots of me doing those things in Resolve. In the end it came down to running out of time, honestly. As for the looking at the camera part, As soon as I was done with the rough cut I came to the same conclusion. Again, it came down to timing. You can not imagine the amount of life obstacles I had to work around to get this video done lol. Thanks so much Jim!
