    Another great video that will become another staple of mine, right alongside your video on getting rid of room echo. I watched another video on this topic first because it was shorter. But yours is more informative, explaining all the controls plus going through some adjusting after setting your values and explaining why you made each adjustment, which is priceless. Thank you for another addition to my Davinci Resolve core library that I use for every video. God bless.

    The music is basically there to coverup the noise floor. Also to cover completely dead air. If you plan to power talk without break like above and have low noise it doesn't matter.

    I LOVE music in parts of my videos. I used to add music along the entire track, but now I'm selective about it, and use it to add emotion to the video [hopefully]. I agree, it's gotta be low so it doesn't overpower the voice parts.
    This is a great technique you showed - I'll have to tinker with it a bit. I'm currently using Alex Audio Butler to do my mixing for me ... it does a good job of ducking, but in moto vlog videos, it's really hard for it since there's ALWAYS background noise, so you have to play with its settings a bit to find the sweet spot for bg music volume.

    • @JayLippman

      AAB is great, but I do love the process of mixing audio, so I pretty much only use it if I'm in a rush. I'm glad you liked the video!

    • @RoadReality

      @@JayLippman Man, I'm always in a rush, even with 2 videos scheduled [and most are already uploaded & detailed out] into the end of March already! I've got so many ideas of things to shoot/edit/publish that I could get my 2x/week schedule filled through May at this point LOL.
      Anyway, I do not like audio mixing. I'm hard of hearing [diagnosed] so I don't hear a lot of things other people DO hear, and having the software handle the volumes and ducking is greatly beneficial to me. Having software do it for me allows me to concentrate on the video aspects and my overall workflow ... my typical videos take 5-10 hours to edit, so anything that can shave time off that number is helpful.
      Well, that's my sob story, but I still want to play around with the auto-ducking in DR when I get a chance. Keep up the good work, your content is super helpful!

    I think all film decisions are that you use audio or music to enhance, and not distract. So it is subjective to think that it enhances or distracts. But for screencasts, if it used in youTubers videos - if the content is something that you are not familiar with - BG music is in my opinion distracting. And there are far too many tuts out there where they have added music and even with ducking is really distracting. But it is again in my opinion, really dependant on the delivery of the person talking. If english is your second language and the video is in english, it can be difficult sometimes to hear annunciation. Think of Darren's videos - is there music in the BG when he is explaining something? How about Qazi? My opinion - you don't need it. It doesn't enhance. But I do think if using it that you hit the right volume levels where it doesn't become distracting. When lecturing or general talking - I say yes - when it goes to someone trying to follow your every move during a software screencast - I say no.

    I like having music in videos. For my own videos, it covers up the background noise that Noise Removal doesn't work on (GPU fan mostly). Picking the right music and the debate over reusing the same music is something I still struggle with though. For example, when Simon Whistler does his videos, it's always the same song but its so subtle you can't really tell most of the time. Then there's the issue of using headphones versus not. When I wear the headphones that came with my S10+ the music sounds close to the level of my voice (though there's a clear 20-30dB difference on the meters, versus using my XPS' speakers where I can only hear the dialogue. Neither are ideal for monitoring.

    • @JayLippman
      @JayLippman  3 года назад +1

      I agree about covering up background noise 100%! And yeah, you really need external monitors for audio, or a decent set of headphones. I always recommend the AKG K240 Studio headphones. I've been using them throughout both my music and my video editing career.

    I think it is possible that word choice by someone whose first language is not English might lead anyone to misconstrue the speaker's or writer's intention. Having lived and worked in other countries, places in which I never attained native fluencies, I had many embarrassing moments. In the main these were met with good humor and sometimes even charity.
    German is a language with idiosyncrasies and even some weirdnesses when translated directly into English. Sherlock Holmes’s author Conan Doyle points this out in the short story "A Scandal in Bohemia." Holmes reads a note aloud to Watson then says, “Only a German would be so uncourteous to his verbs.”
    When a poster’s first language is German and their knowledge of English is not fully fluent, their translation of the adjective “faul” or its related verb “faulenzen” directly into English can easily go awry. If they use on-line automated translation, it could mean disaster. They might accidentally accuse you or others of being lazy.
    I value your channel highly. You are helping me learn a new craft. And if we ever drink coffee together, I’ll tell you the tale of my sending white carnations to a wedding in Milan.

    Is there a function in Davinci Resolve that can adjust the speaking volume automatically, to make the dialog at a constant level? Sometimes when speaking (especially while seated), the speaking person is not aware that some words or sentences were low in volume, while some words or sentences were in higher volume. Just wondering if there is a function to fix that, rather than doing it manually.

    Hey Jay! love your channel :) I’m really struggling to record in fairlight (DR17 beta) for VO/ADR and I wondered if you or any of your subscribers have ever experienced stuttering/glitching when trying to record audio. I have this in both track record and ADR mode. It’s not an samplerate mismatch, or low buffer setting and my hardware works fine in other programs. Have tried a few things. Have posted to the BM forums but a few people are just telling me on there that fairlight isn’t stable and to give up trying to use it for recording into. I don’t believe this as there are so many users having no problems like yourself. Are you recording on a Mac? No external audio interface or perhaps a USB mic?
    I figured with all these great audio videos you have been doing recently you might be a really good person to ask! Thanks

    I love music in my intro and outro. I feel kind of at a loss when it comes to finding the right kind of music to talk over while engaging the audience though throughout the video of for certain clips. Also, I have a quick question about color grading, but it might also tie into rendering. The question is: After I have rendered the final project, there's a couple times throughout my video where the color grading disappears for a split second, so is it perhaps because I'm on a mid tier gaming laptop that's about 2 years old? My laptop isn't eligible for the studio driver, even though it does have a nvidia graphics card. If you're confused about my question, there is an example of it (not a plug, and I feel bad for even mentioning my video) in my most recent video, in the first 10 or so seconds of it. But I feel like my not-so-good color grading and my underwhelming laptop for rendering is probably to blame. Sorry for the long question, but I've been subscribed for a couple weeks now, and you have made my transition from filmora into davinci much more smoothly and less infuriating 😂 love your videos, I have binged watch a lot of them by now! No worries if you can't answer my question, still a fan 😊

    • @JayLippman
      @JayLippman  3 года назад +1

      If it just pops in and out, it might be a GPU issue. I doubt it has anything to do with Resolve. Sorry I can't be more help! I'm glad you're finding my videos helpful!

    When I want to hear music I will listen to music. When I'm trying to do something else, not to mention leaning something, I consider background noise to be a distraction, and most of the background music on RUclips is just that, i.e. noise. I can't recall turning on a RUclips video so I could ignore the video and just listen to the music. Do you know anyone who has purchased the sound track from an educational video? I don't. The content has to carry the video. If it doesn't, then, well, .......................

    • @JayLippman
      @JayLippman  3 года назад

      I agree that the content should carry the video, but having music in the background can actually help fill out the sound, or drown out any unwanted sounds, which tends to happen when you record in a space without walls and a door, much less proper sound treatment.

    I do Not Like the music in yours Videos because ist Not necessary. I do a simple Trick i just read what you say in the subtitles. Or i click away. Anyways you are one of the view Influencers würde the music Mix is reasonable. OK in a serious production of a film thats not the way to go. The Problem ist just for voice a good mix needs 6 to 10 Channels of a good mix. My new favorite for this ist the Melodyne VST Plugin that costs more than 500 $. The Tips and Tricks are good for those that are more lazy and have realy no interest for sound.

      Not just for lazy people. Thats actually incredibly insulting. RUclips and social media have a different set of standards and "rules." Whats acceptable on one platform would make for a horrible experience on another. I think its important to understand that, and to understand the people you're teaching. The majority of my audience makes content for RUclips, so I spend the majority of my time teaching things that will help them edit videos for that platform.
