What are the best settings for speed, at the AX86U? I have that router. I do have 600/40Mbps now, but next month I'll have 1000/1000Mbps. Using 2,5Gbit port as WAN and I've got 160Mhz enabled. My notebook with AX201 has linkspeed 2400 :)
@@wvvliet86 Nice! That's a huge improvement in the upload. So I tried a couple things, but I would start by turning off the QoS and seeing how that impacts your speed tests. I found that without it on I would get better results on my AX86U. Also if you're in an area with a bunch of wifi connections in close proximity (aka your neighbors), I would download a wifi analyzer to see which channels are less polluted and you can switch to the clearest channel available. Make sure that you're connected to the 5Ghz connection for faster speeds. You can check your client's connection type (5Ghz vs 2.5Ghz) in the app. Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions. Cheers 🙌
@@tonyshoulders_ Hey Tony! Welcome to the channel fam 🙌 Great question. If you're looking for just a wired connection, you might not need wifi capabilities. If so, you can just get a wired router which I imagine is cheaper. That said if you're looking for something with both wifi and wired connection these are great options to consider. Hope that helps 👍
153 subs?? Damn you probably spent a significant amount on equipment and did a lot of research on how to film and edit these scenes, that or it's your hobby or already work in the industry in someway. I can't believe this is your first rodeo with all that lighting and recording frame and flawless A rolls and B rolls. in other words: Nice video. very informative. much cinematic. wow
I've been running the 82u, and 86u here as a mesh in my 2br apt lol. I have the 82u setup as the main, with the 86u being the spoke, using a wired backhaul. Lots of interference in apartments of course, particularly on 2.4ghz. I highly recommend the wifi analyzer app for channel tuning. Either way, mine has ran great for about 2yrs now. I still don't feel the need to upgrade. Great products. Cheers.
Thanks for sharing! Such a great idea to test with the WiFi Analyzer app. Like you mentioned this is super helpful for people in an apartment setting where you're competing with many other signals. Welcome to the channel!
Good basic speed test, but it didn't really tell us differences between those 3 routers and if the most expensive one is worth it... Speed of WIFI is aspect too, but it doesn't have to be the most important one. I believe if someone is choosing router, he is interested also in features, customization, options for 3rd party firmware, speed of cpu and amount of RAM etc.
Thanks for sharing these tips my friend! If you were curious the Merlin 🧙♂️ firmware (I haven’t used it yet, but know it’s popular 3rd party) is available for the AX58U and AX86U, but unfortunately not the AX82U. Appreciate the feedback. Welcome to the channel fam 👍
Looking for a router. Same situation in choosing a new Asus router. Excellent quality production and review. Love the out-take. 355 subs only? Expected it to be at least 100x more.
Great review, thank you for sharing this information! I was considering these three routers and just decided on the AX58U based on this review since it did best in the distance test and was still very competitive in the other tests. Might as well save some money, since the biggest issue I have with my current old router is speed/connectivity with devices furthest away from the router.
Congrats on the new router! The AX58U should serve you very well! Feel free to report back with your experience with the new router. Welcome to the channel my friend!
I have a Asus AX 11000 Rapture at home and actually got the RT-AX82U as an upgrade for my grandparents old WiFi 5 router, while the 82U comes nowhere close to the performance and features on the AX11000 for $200 on sale the 82U actually surprised me how well it works and it’s pretty small and compact plus it has RGB’s just like the AX11000 for literally half the price.
Aren't speed drops are way too high for 40 feet (12 something meters) It means speed would drop greatly if I set my router in my own room or living room.
It's probably also due to the walls of the apartment and competing wifi in the area. I took the test outside. For a single family home, I wouldn't think it would drop that much. Sometime I should do an update review.
Thanks for the kind words! I’m so glad you found the video helpful. Congrats on getting fiber optic internet. It’s so good! Definitely a fan. Hope the router serves you well 😊 welcome to the channel fam 🎉
Thanks friend! Really appreciate it. I just started in May and I’m excited to see where things go. Welcome to the channel fam 🙌 Have an above amazing week!!
I'm confused why you say upgrade to the 82U or 86U if you want more range, but your testing shows the best speed with the 58U at the longest range. Does it or does it not have better or equal range? Your limited testing does not identify that. Is that statement based off marketing or actual testing?
Hey friend! Great questions. You are absolutely correct that my tests are limited. It's been 2 years since I had access to the routers so unfortunately I can't test them easily. There are definitely gaps in what I tested and my testing methods. I also didn't even show what I changed to make the speed improvements. First I will say, all 3 routers from my memory performed very well. I believe the primary thing I did to the 86U that helped it's performance was turn off the QoS feature. This change sped up the router in some of my testing. I can't remember if I tested the distance much after that change so again this could be a gap in testing. The other element that could be an issue here is whether or not certain router distance tests were done on the 2.4Ghz vs 5Ghz band. For example at the distance test if the 58U was using the 2.4Ghz band and the others were still on the 5Ghz I could see that impacting the results greatly. I apologize for not having a more definitive answer. I want to thank you for your thoughtful comment. With all that said, I want to welcome to the channel 👍
Never had a custom router before and thinking about making the upgrade, trying to decide between the Asus RT-AX82U and the Netduma R3 but not really sure what would be the best pick? I game a lot, so just looking for lower ping and a more stable connection overall.
Hey friend! Great question. I haven't heard of the Netduma R3 before. When you say custom router are you talking about RGB or running custom firmware? If firmware, I don't believe that the RT-AX82U supports the popular Asuswrt-Merlin firmware. That said, I am using the native firmware that comes with the router. Since I have never tested the Netduma R3 I probably can't speak much about it. The RT-AX82U was my personal favorite when reviewing these particular routers. Welcome to the channel fam!
Sorry but didn't the 58u perform the best at distance? You said to not get that if you want distance?? Also if you're going to do a test, do it fairly. I consistently get 700mb on my 58u at close range and 500 2 levels away in my house. You need to split the 2.4 and 5ghz channels and use a device capable of attaining the top speeds of the router
Good points, Ian. You are 100% correct that the 58U performed the best at the furthest distance in the test. And yes, it would be good to test the 2.5 vs 5 GHz performance separately. Additionally, I will say my testing environment in an apartment with competing wifi signals probably isn't the best for finding the ideal results of an individual router. However, it does give a similar area to compare results of routers in a real life environment. Thanks again for bringing this to my attention. Have a great week friend 🙌
@@pauldittus no worries. I myself live in a detached house with little interference from other wifi signals. I set this router up and haven't done any tweaking other than splitting the channels. In fact it's one of the main reasons I ditched the bt router as they stopped the ability to split the channels and they also don't provide WiFi 6 routers on the fttp 1gb package. The first thing anyone should do is split the channels. Choose which one is best for the device you're using. I agree, it's probably not the best all rounder for everyone. But when I was shopping around, I wanted the rt ax88u but it was way too expensive and way too overkill for my needs. I found this to be the best compromise for spacial footprint and performance. My galaxy tab s7 constantly achieves 7 to 800mb upstairs, which is one room up and 1 room over, always shows its connected at 1.2gbps and although it's not the 980mbps I get on ethernet, it's pretty damn good compared to the bt smart hubs 230mbpa in the same room.
@@Ian-ev5tg that’s awesome 🙌 You definitely did a good job getting the most out of your router. I completely agree about the pricing. I made the video to see if it was worth getting the more expensive router or not. Honestly, for many people even the AX58U provides faster speeds than their ISP offers right now.
Thanks so much John! Appreciate it. It's definitely pretty amazing to have those RGB lights on a router. In the ASUS app you can select the RGB color you want, and even customize what they do.
What router you recommend? I have a super old netgear AC router that's like 5 years old haha need the upgrade, was thinking of the ax58u since I live in a apartment or maybe the ax82u since I do game a lot but I only use wifi for gaming
What speed does your ISP provide? The AX58U performed well for the price. The AX82U has cool LED lights and is a solid performer. If you want to save money you might go for the AX58U and take it for a spin to see if it meets your needs. Otherwise, the AX82U is great option.
Good video. However when the conclusion doesn't match what has been shown to us in the performance test, why even bothering showing the speed (performance) test.
Hey friend! Thanks for the feedback 😊 Great point. What happened was that after the speed test I made an adjustment to the settings which gave me faster results from the AX86U. That said, based on the test results you are correct that it isn't always the fastest. I will also say that the environment played an impact on the tests as it was an apartment so there were many routers competing for the same area. I might do an updated video with speed results in a less competitive router environment for the 86U.
Great question. I'm not 100% sure. I'm guessing whichever one was in use 3 years ago which could be V1. Regarding the difference I found an answer on Reddit which might be helpful: "Kindly be advised that the difference is in the chipset. The RT-AX82U utilizes the BCM6750 (built-in 2.4G) + BCM43684. While the RT-AX82U V2 utilises the BCM6750 (built-in 2.4G) + BCM6715X(pin to pin 43684)" Full reddit thread here: www.reddit.com/r/ASUS/comments/14bos38/ax82u_v2_differences/ Hope this helps! Good question my friend. I would suggest analyzing your local wifi signals if you live in close proximity to other routers (there are wifi channel analyzer apps available). That way you can see which channels have the least usage. Unfortunately I can't remember the exact speed, hopefully I can do another test soon. Welcome to the channel fam 🎉
I got the AX82U but it doesn't seem to fix my deadspot room. So I got a TP-link extender and that created even more problems. Idk what to do, thinking of buying mesh router but don't want to waste my ASUS router.
Sorry to hear that the 82U didn't fix the deadspot. Does it work well for the rest of the house? I do believe the ASUS routers allow you to use other Asus routers to create their AiMesh WiFi system. Might be worth looking into. How large is your space your trying to cover?
@@pauldittus it works fine everywhere else, my AX82U is down the hallway. Just that one room which is a small bedroom. I ended up buying the DECO AX3000 (3pk) covers 6500 sq ft. Sense it’s Cyber Monday.
I love the RGB on the AX82U. If you're house isn't super big, any of these routers should work great. The nice thing with Asus Routers is that they allow you to use them as a MESH setup if you end up getting more than one Asus router. If the internet is just in the next room, I believe you should be more than fine.
@@Dukelalo1 Great question. You can use these routers in mesh mode to utilize them together. You can set them up as individual wifi networks, but you would need to connect them to the internet in some way if you need internet.
I just bought 58u and it is awesome! All devices are served properly and I have even brought Tx power to minimum… still great option. Native firmware is 👌
Nice!! Let me know how you like the 86. Great question. I did more testing after the initial tests with some modifications to the settings like the mode it was in. After those changes I believe the 86 performed slightly better than the 82. This was one of my first videos and I didn’t document well 😭 Welcome to channel fam :)
Great question. I looked at the results that I took in the video and it looks like it outputted about 5 ms ping pretty consistently which according to Cox (www.cox.com/residential/internet/guides/gaming-performance/ping-testing.html) is great for gaming. Hope that helps! Cheers 🙌
usually if you have a wired connection you'll typically get the best results. From what I can tell, I don't believe unless you have a damaged or super old ethernet cable that changing the cable would effect the ping. hope this helps 🙂👍
@@panathasracer9230 a lot depends on your ISP. When doing speed tests I would see what speeds your getting and compare them to what the company promises. You can also call them up and ask what a typical ping rate is for their service.
Great question. The router bought from a store should be a one time purchase. Routers from your ISP (Internet Service Provider) often charges a monthly fee. I much prefer owning a wireless router. All that said, you will need an internet plan from an ISP unless you just want to run a local network. Hope this helps! Welcome to the channel 🎉

Surprisingly, it seems that these are still being sold by ASUS. WiFi 802.11ax (WiFi-6) still is the latest broadly available. Sounds like 802.11be WiFi 7 might drop sometime in 2024. Is there something in particular you are looking for in a router?
Hey there friend! Thanks for visiting the channel community! What speed does your ISP (internet service provider) offer? But I will say that the AX82U is a solid buy and was pretty awesome with those cool lights on the front.

Hey friend! I’ve tried the 82u. I haven’t tried the 92u yet. I believe someone commented on this video about their experience with the 92u and it sounded positive if I remember correctly.
@@pauldittus I got the RT-AX88U as its much better and Wifi 6 in the true sense. Plus has a lot more juice in terms of processing power and internal storage. It doesnt have a gaming port exclusively like 82U but Qos works just fine I feel as a replacement!
I believe it depends on the router you are comparing it to. Some routers offer a higher bandwidth. Granted your internet service provider will likely be the primary throttle for internet via Ethernet unless you have like 10Gbps speeds. Welcome to the channel!
Hey friend! So as mentioned I was able to achieve faster speeds after working with the 86U. Hello my friend! You bring up good points. This was my first video on the channel so definitely areas for improvement. I had to answer many questions regarding this in the comments as a result. Regarding the tweaks for the results: I tried a couple things, but I would start by turning off the QoS and seeing how that impacts your speed tests. I found that without it on I would get better results on my AX86U. You can check your client's connection type (5Ghz vs 2.5Ghz) in the app. All this said, the 82U is a awesome router. I was happy with the results of all 3 which made it a difficult decision. I will definitely keep your feedback in mind for future videos. Welcome to the channel!
Hey friend, I'm trying to remember, but I'm pretty sure just turning off the QOS setting after I reset the router did the trick. Some other ideas: I would suggest using a WiFi Analyzer to see which channels are polluted in your area. Then select a channel that isn't as saturated in your area. Also as noted in one of the tests, make sure you're on the 5 Ghz connection as that will give you the fastest speeds when in close proximity. Right after turning on the router I sometimes had to toggle my wifi on my client on and off to connect to the 5 Ghz. Also if you can you might consider enabling DFS channels in the WiFi settings. Let me know how it goes. There are a few other things we can try if those don't work. Cheers and welcome to the channel fam 😊!

Great question. Unfortunately, I’m not familiar with the ASUS RT-AC1800HP Router. I do believe the ASUS routers I tested did come with some sort of Ethernet cable, but not exactly sure the version.
Is it better to have a wifi connection to asus router or wired connection with xfi mesh gen 2 pods? I noticed some lag while gaming and I didn't have that kind lag when i was wired to Xfinity gateway modem ..im guessing its ping or latency because my download speeds are supposed be good for gaming it's at 150mbps
I am sorry for the delay replying, Johnny. A direct wired connection from the source router is usually the best option. If it's a mesh wired connection, it could be a "it depends." The Asus I'm just gonna warn everyone the Asus 82u is probably by far ur best pick as it doesn't have as much of the possibility of bricking like the other two I've been seeing reports of the other two routers bricking after the firmware update but the 82u has the lowest brick rate out of the three routers from what I've seen so far the latest firmware update is strong and stable for it and the worse that can happen in most cases with the Asus 82u is the connection drops from time to time that can potentially most likely be fixed unlike the other two that render the whole router useless

@@pauldittus it's something to do with software updating in general I've heard both of them causing it I'm not sure if Merlin causes bricking more than the normal updates do but from what I've heard is Merlin does it normally if u install the wrong version and Asus I've been told has been putting updates out that are compatible with some routers they have but not all of them not sure what causes them in the original ones it's probably the same thing u can get any of them as long as u don't update u should be fine but if u like to keep ur routers updated id suggest the Asus 82 u as it's the safest route for that ^^

Also I heard that it might take a little while before your connection is cleared by RADAR so you might need to wait a little before seeing better results after making changes to your router settings.
One thing I tried was resetting the router. I got better results after resetting my router. You can also turn the QOS settings off to see if that improves the speed of your test.
@@stevenvdstaak6682 both of those are solid. I’m personally using the 86u and it works great, but I really liked the cool led lights on 82u. Plus the 82u is a solid performer as you can see in the results.
From a professional grade vid, I expected usual things. Entry speech was too long for such short vid. All that was tested was speed at distances without mentionin gconditions, obstacles, latencies, mesh, gaming priorities. Thats where those diffs in prices come from. Some tweaks? What tweaks?? This video has all visual effects and quality and speech is top grade, but its a tech review, so solid tech research is a must and you did very little. Few thoughts because you asked. Im sure you will fix them in future vids. This channel has potential!
@pauldittus dont worry about making longer videos. More work but it stays here forever. Great comparison, just what i wanted, but most of the test was won by 82 but still you said 86 is better, can you just show a second video as to what results you got after the tweaking the 86...thank you
Hey friend! That’s a good idea 👍. Appreciate the feedback. The first thing I recommend is turning off the QOS setting on the router. Then checking the WiFi analysis and seeing what’s the best channel with the least interference.
@@heavenlyxtacy it's so hard to say. I ended up going with the 86U because I found one for about the same price as the 82U. That said, I love the look of the 82U with it's cool lights. So far the 86U has done basically everything I've wanted in a router. The 82U was a solid performer as you can see by the results. What speed does your ISP provide?
@Hugo Sr2123 hey friend! I’m hoping to do a follow up speed test of the 86u to demonstrate what I found. If in the subsequent test it proves to be less, I’m to declare the 82u the winner. The results I got with the 86u were after making an adjustment and after I took all the initial tests.
Hey friend! Hi, i have an Asus AX86U and my highest result are 420/240 on 1000/330 network (next to the router - approx. 1 meter distance) with Samsung S10e (wifi 6, AX). How can i increase it?
Hey friend! Great question. I would suggest first testing your wired connection and making sure you're getting the promised 1000/330 speed. Are you in an apartment or a location with many other wifi devices competing? If so, you can use a wifi analyzer to determine the best channel to set your router with the least interference. Next, I would start by turning off the QoS and seeing how that impacts your speed tests or setting it to another setting. Also, make sure your device is connected to 5Ghz as the 2.5Ghz will be slower at that distance. Hope that helps! Welcome to the channel fam 🙌

If you own the AX86u I would HIGHLY recommend ditching the stock firmware and downloading Asus Merlin firmware. Merlin firmware is MUCH better than the stock firmware. Has flex and cake qos capabilities. Also has a built in speed test. There is the ability to add Skynet firewall to the router in conjunction with the built in firewall. Also has TOR vpn added and so on. I was running that firmware on my Asus AX11000 and it was rock solid. Hoping Merlin adds the AX89x model to the supported routers soon but the AX86u is a supported router for the Merlin Firmware and it is free to install.
@@Placesandspaces35 good point! Another thing to note is that the AX82U is not Merlin supported at this time. I have not used the Merlin firmware yet, but have heard great things about it. The built-in firmware does have a speed test as well to test as well. Thanks for sharing the info! Have an awesome week 🙌
They all seem to be very good routers. Just upgraded to the Asus AX89x for the 10 gbe sfp+ and 10gbe rj45 port capabilities in case i want to get a 10gbe card for my computer. More pricey than the routers you were displaying but the hardware on that model may be the best out there. If you are looking to future proof the Asus AX89X is definitely worth a shot.
@@pauldittus Honestly the two things had me sold on the AX89x model was the 8 gigabit lan ports on the back as before i was using a gigabit switch. And then the two 10 gbe options also on the router. Right now just running 2.5 gbe equipment and the transfer speeds of photos, files etc are insane using this router. SPF+ port is good for people who have fiber internet. The other routers you previewed are also solid choices too.
@@pauldittus no I haven’t been gaming in a long time but the ping on my speed tests are usually between 18 and 20 which is pretty good considering I don’t have fiber in internet (which have ridiculously low pings…so jealous lol). I am a chord cutter so watching iptv is very good. Hardly any buffering. Speed tests on iPhone usually hover around 700 mbps particularly using 160 MHZ band. People tend to get caught up on speed but stability is the most important thing on a network. Low ping, eliminating bottlenecks in networking setups and eliminating bufferbloat are way more important in my opinion. Even a gig network can have bottlenecks and bufferbloat but with a good set up most of the time that stuff can be mitigated to make sure your network is running as smoothly as possible. A good router helps tremendously too. 😁
@@pauldittus if you decide to use that Merlin Firmware there is a guy here on RUclips that does a great job showing how to install it and the different features. Just search Eclipse Reviews and he breaks it down nicely. He has a few videos regarding Merlin firmware and shows how to install flex qos which is awesome because if you have a fast internet subscription like a gig you can run flex and it prioritizes data packets and doesn’t slow down your network at all. Cake qos on Merlin is better for slower networks 300 mbps and slower but same thing doesn’t drop your speed like a lot of qos protocols do. Using either of those took away any bufferbloat issues I had prior. Would run speed tests on dslreports dot com and got A+ ratings for my network quality. Definitely worth checking out!
@@snowatom solid 🙌! I’m using that one right now too! Is it your first time using Merlin firmware? I’ve heard good things about it, but haven’t used it yet.

Great review, thank you for sharing this information! I was considering these three routers and just decided on the AX58U based on this review since it did best in the distance test and was still very competitive in the other tests. Might as well save some money, since the biggest issue I have with my current old router is speed/connectivity with devices furthest away from the router.

Awesome!! Thanks for sharing your experience with the channel fam 🙌. The RGBs on the AX82u are pretty sweet.
For these do you have to pay per month? Or is it a one time purchase?
Aren't speed drops are way too high for 40 feet (12 something meters) It means speed would drop greatly if I set my router in my own room or living room.
It's probably also due to the walls of the apartment and competing wifi in the area. I took the test outside.
For a single family home, I wouldn't think it would drop that much. Sometime I should do an update review.

I might do an updated video with speed results in a less competitive router environment for the 86U.
hi , may i ask which HW ver of Ax82u please ? is v1 or v2
Great question. I'm not 100% sure. I'm guessing whichever one was in use 3 years ago which could be V1.
Regarding the difference I found an answer on Reddit which might be helpful:
"Kindly be advised that the difference is in the chipset.
The RT-AX82U utilizes the BCM6750 (built-in 2.4G) + BCM43684.
While the RT-AX82U V2 utilises the BCM6750 (built-in 2.4G) + BCM6715X(pin to pin 43684)"

I believe it depends on the router you are comparing it to. Some routers offer a higher bandwidth. Granted your internet service provider will likely be the primary throttle for internet via Ethernet unless you have like 10Gbps speeds.

the video evidence suggests the best overall is 82u but you say after tweaking 86u is best overall without the video proof, either you was lazy too reshoot or not true, either way its contradicting to the footage
Also if you're in an area with a bunch of wifi connections in close proximity (aka your neighbors), I would download a wifi analyzer to see which channels are less polluted and you can switch to the clearest channel available. Make sure that you're connected to the 5Ghz connection for faster speeds in close proximity. You can check your client's connection type (5Ghz vs 2.5Ghz) in the app.
All this said, the 82U is a awesome router. I was happy with the results of all 3 which made it a difficult decision.
I will definitely keep your feedback in mind for future videos.
Welcome to the channel!
Tell us what kind of "tweaking" did u do?
Hey friend, I'm trying to remember, but I'm pretty sure just turning off the QOS setting after I reset the router did the trick. Some other ideas:
I would suggest using a WiFi Analyzer to see which channels are polluted in your area.

If it's a mesh wired connection, it could be a "it depends." Hey Anthony! Great question. As I mention in the video, I later adjusted settings on the AX5700 and I managed to get better results after taking all my initial speed tests shown in the video. The Asus I'm just gonna warn everyone the Asus 82u is probably by far ur best pick as it doesn't have as much of the possibility of bricking like the other two I've been seeing reports of the other two routers bricking after the firmware update but the 82u has the lowest brick rate out of the three routers from what I've seen so far the latest firmware update is strong and stable for it and the worse that can happen in most cases with the Asus 82u is the connection drops from time to time that can potentially most likely be fixed unlike the other two that render the whole router useless

Haven't checked that one out yet, but sounds like a solid choice 👍👍
@@pauldittus Honestly the two things had me sold on the AX89x model was the 8 gigabit lan ports on the back as before i was using a gigabit switch. And then the two 10 gbe options also on the router. Right now just running 2.5 gbe equipment and the transfer speeds of photos, files etc are insane using this router. SPF+ port is good for people who have fiber internet. The other routers you previewed are also solid choices too.
@@Placesandspaces35 that's awesome 🙌! Do you use your router for gaming?
You saved me thank you, gonna buy the Gundam limited edition
Happy to help! Which one is that?
I saw some extra benefits when I upgraded our speed this morning.
Awesome 🙌 which one did you go with?
Wanting to run Merlin firmware, was the reason for my decision
Nice! Did you go with the AX58U or the AX86U?
@@pauldittus the AX86U
@@snowatom solid 🙌! I’m using that one right now too! Is it your first time using Merlin firmware? I’ve heard good things about it, but haven’t used it yet.
@@pauldittus No. I have used it for many years. I can’t do without the split tunneling feature. It makes streaming totally awesome, when not living in the US. Then there are also other cool stuff Merlin can do, that the standard can’t.
@@snowatom cool 😎 ! I’ve never heard of split tunneling, but it sounds pretty awesome.
Don’t waste your money on AX86u buy AX82U it’s great and cheaper.

Thanks for sharing friend! I know another person here also recommended the 82u. Plus you get those amazing RGB lights which are epic. Definitely a great option.
