    Thanks for the detailed review. I'm definitely getting this over the AX88U then. As I am primarily eyeing the fast file transfer over the network as I plan to connect my hard drives here so that my Tapo camera could then store the footages here instead of the lowly 8GB memory card I installed in it atm. The extra boost and stability of file transfer over network is definitely a plus.

    NIkos - great material. Love Your videos. I need a router for a large house, so the signal has to go between two flours of the house and there is a thick concrite seeling. Which router would be beter: RT-86U or RT88U ?

    • @NikosRentas
      @NikosRentas  2 года назад

      Thanks for the comment. The RT-86U is slightly stronger but you won't notice the difference unless you test it. The concrete will slow it down for sure. I would test to see how good the signal will be and think about Aimesh or bringing another line up with another router.

    Thanks for the very informative review!! I've been looking to upgrade my router and one the most important features for me is coverage!! Right now I'm using a Netgear router and a Netgear extender. I have a one level 2500 sq ft home. I'm wondering if I upgrade to the AX86U if will give me better coverage? If not since you explained that you can't make a mesh with routers or extenders from different company I might need to go with the Netgear brand!! Your thoughts

    • @NikosRentas
      @NikosRentas  2 года назад +1

      Thanks for the comment. If you are looking for top speed with wifi6 you won't get it on such a big house. You will get the 2.4Ghz reaching but again won't fully give you top speed. Still usable for most things however. In my opinion your options would be to buy 2 of these and mesh them OR buy a netgear with wifi6, use the router you have as an extender or mesh depending on the model OR get rid of everything and by a wifi6 mesh system. Obviously its based on use case and in my opinion I would be looking at utilizing what you have. Now, the other note, you can't use mesh but you can use it as an extender from what I understand. In either case I would by buying from a place I can return so you can test things out.

    Nice video ... I have decided and ordered this ... just one question what isn't clear, where are you connected your NAS ? at 2,5 port for more stable and fast connection to the internet ? this need some special settings ? so the blue one is internet in and you can bridge to2,5 port ? i have synology nas too and have trouble with upload ... so it's important to know what to do and how.

    • @NikosRentas

      My NAS is older so I connected 2 ports to it creating a link aggregation. The 2.5 can be connected to a NAS with faster than 1 Gbit connection.

    Awesome video sir. I'm looking at getting this router. My house is two levels with about 1500sq feet on each level. Would this router give us enough range to cover both levels if it's located downstairs? What do you think?

    • @NikosRentas
      @NikosRentas  3 года назад +1

      I tested both the AX86U and AX88U in a two story house 1800Sq/Ft with basement and they achieve similar distance. The AX86U having slightly better transfer stability but negligible unless you are transferring large files and can see it. The router was in the basement and it is a wood structure with brick outside. It reaches WIFI 6 speeds to the main floor or about 15-20 feet from the router and decreases substantially outside of the range. ie. if I was on top of the router one floor up full speed. The 2.4 GHz network reached second floor no problem with a decrease in speed to around 80-100Mbits per second. So I am assuming you will be good to go. I will respond with the same comment in the other video as well.

    I bought the pro version of this unit because I want a more stable connection and a bigger CPU while gaming and not frequent disconnection when the system gets hot. I searched and read a lot of reviews that the high-end units come with these problems and this does not bode well with me as the price vs performance + disconnection is not worth it for me. The gaming title is just hype.

  • @iam_joshua_bcxvii

    Finally decided 2 weeks ago to get this unit due to this review. That local file transfer rate of over 200mBps is what I need for plex and IP Camera purposes. Though the speeds you shown are from a NAS.
    Do you have a file transfer test where file transfer speed is tested using a portable SSD storage and plugged into the 2.5G LAN port?. I wonder how fast the USB 3.0 port are. Because atm, I am maxing out the gigabit port I have when doing file transfer with a storage attached on the USB port of the drive, so it would be great to know how fast the router is without a dedicated NAS but just a storage plugged onto one of its USB 3.0 ports.

    Appreciate the detailed review without the typical youtube hype. Thoughtfully done! Question - if i buy 2 of these and using a wireless backhaul (AI mesh) in 2 different levels how much bandwidth can i realistically get on a 1Gig ISP connection? @NikosRentas  2 года назад +1

      Thanks for the comment!
      So, depending on the build of the house you will get the wifi6 connection to the second floor directly above with at least 80 - 90 percent of the full power signal. In theory the if you put the other mesh directly above it you will have the same amount of speed on the second floor. Which means in reality, 1Gbps speed from ISP translates to 850-900Mbps and you should get 800-900Mbps upstairs. I am thinking to make a mesh test video. Are there any other questions I should be looking to answer if I make that video?

    • @NikosRentas
      @NikosRentas  3 года назад

      I logged into the router to check options. When you click to enable link aggregation it only gives you options for bonding support 802.3ad with LAN 1 and LAN 2 ports. So I am not sure if you switch the primary WAN to the 2.5G WAN if that limits it in anyway but I would assume it wouldn't. Please note. you can enable dual WAN with Primary WAN and 2.5G WAN or LANs and can make those either Fail Over or Load Balancing as well. Hopefully that helps. If I figure out a way to test it I will let you know but hopefully someone watches this and has tested it lol.

From the specs www.asus.com/Networking-IoT-Servers/WiFi-Routers/ASUS-Gaming-Routers/RT-AX86U/techspec/ it seems to be that it loses support of the 2.5Gbps port, half the RAM and a couple of other features. Good review. Question, how does this router compare to an asus rt-ax92u? The ax92u looks higher end on paper with the faster speed and 3 bands. The 86u has great reviews from many reviewers. Can you tell me which router is better regardless of price and why? Thanks.

    • @NikosRentas
      @NikosRentas  3 года назад +1

      Great question. I would say you want to think about it in terms of specifics to what is needed for your work flow and user dynamics. I didn't test it so this is based on reviewing the specs and other reviews. You should test out routers before you keep them. I would not agree fully it is better on paper. The system has a Dual-core 1.8Ghz CPU and 512 MB RAM which on paper is okay but in real world is not strong enough for increasing demands (again use case). In contrast the AX86U and AX88U has 1.8 GHz quad-core CPU and 1GB RAM allowing it to do way more with more connections. I focus on heavy use with big transfers over wifi 6 and really happy with my results of the AX88U, AX86U, and AX82U. I again prefer 88 or 86.
      The ax92U although having 3 bands, 2x2 2.4Gbps, 2x2 Wifi 5 and 4x4 wifi 6 you can get up to theoretical speeds on individual mode but when meshed you are capped to 1.73Gbps. So basically if you were to mesh two of the other AX routers like 88, 86, 82 you would be in a situation where you are maximizing capabilities instead of being capped. Plus the 2x2 band on the AX92u vs the 3x3 AX86U, based on use case of course, will not always show issues but when demand increases it will.
      Again, something like the 2.5G Port and some other features come in handy with NAS systems and next gen upgrades from networks. So, once my network carrier gets to 1.5Gbit speed I will be good. Doesn't apply to everyone and is use case of course. So, basically, use case, dataflow, and workflow has to be analyzed before deciding on a router.
      This guy does some in depth reviews you should check out: dongknows.com/asus-rt-ax92u-review/
      Hope this helps.

      @@NikosRentas Thanks for your detailed reply. Over the last few days I was researching routers. I think I want to stick with asus. I didn’t realize the ax92u had lower specs, so I think I will cross it off my list. I am seriously looking at the 86 and 88 and trying to decide between the 2. If cost is not a concern, which one do you recommend 86 or 88? Which one is better and higher end? I will use the router in a 2 level place. I will use one router for now but might do a mesh in the future if I have to. I am looking for great speed wired and wireless, great wifi range, and very good reliability with something that doesn’t go down. I have something like 7 devices connecting to my router with more in the future as more devices reach out to wifi. So something that can handle all these devices.

      @NikosRentas  3 года назад

      Okay, so I have the 88 in a 2000sqft house and I have no issues. When I tested the 86 I saw no difference. The idea would be that you want to think about wired devices and do you need the ports along with do you need the 2.5Gb port. Then it is just availability and price. I would go with the ax86u being that I don't have that many wired connections anymore and my ISP is bringing 1.5Gbit speed to my neighborhood.
      If you haven't watched the other video on the 88u here is the link: ruclips.net/video/PHh6H2aFdB8/видео.html and this is the comparison: ruclips.net/video/8wLTpE32q3E/видео.html

      I looked it up and it seems that the Google Nest Mesh has wifi 5 with 1200Mbps max speed so yes this would be an upgrade depending on your use case. If you are looking to jump right away then pulling the trigger would be a good idea (again use case). Way too much. If you have speeds of less than 100Mbps then a slow older router will be fine. • @NikosRentas

      It should work but it based on the material of the house as well. To put into perspective, in an 1800 Sq.Ft house(170 Square meters) with the router in the basement, the wifi 6 reaches top speed 1 floor up about 12 -15 feet and the 2.4Ghz reaches the second floor. This would be a wood skeleton and outer brick house. So I would get the router from somewhere you can return it to test as the material of the house will effect the overall distance.

      You mean these guys? www.spectrum.com/ They have gigabit speed. The question is where is the line coming into the house and what kind of build it is. If the router is in your room then you wouldn't care if it is a regular router or a high-end router as it is right next to you. ie. within 10-15feet. You will have maximum speed as you are close to it. If it on the other side of the house I would get a high powered router like this ax86u or use a mesh version. If the company offers their own router mesh system it could be fast enough just make sure it will perform at the speed you are paying for and the closest router is within 10-15 feet.

      Several reasons off the top of my mind before going down any rabbit wholes:

      -I discovered my cables that came with the router are only cat 5 and once I bout cat 8 they upped it massively.
      -review your settings of your router and make sure they are setup for maximum transfer
      -review your settings for your devices and make sure they are setup for maximum transfer
      Also, remember that you have a good fast speed and you won't really notice the significant difference (depending on what you are doing) but also that they are only advertised speeds and have a +/- variable on that. My provider got into it with me over that but then I read the contract...

      I will do my best but I am just going with what feels right. I get excited sometimes and have to slow down. Other times I realize I am mumbling. It's a learning process.

      Thanks for the feedback and I understand where you are coming from. I had an issue with Netgear and switched to Asus with no issues. I have a few now and aside from the small issues I get the job done. I did test the Netgear Wifi 6 versions and they did the job but the Asus just had the extra satisfaction of personal experience and out beat some aspects of uses for me. I am exactly the same with MSI as you are with Asus after my laptop fried just outside of warranty and they didn't care. I have started to test things out before I go over the return date so I don't end up hating companies.

      @@NikosRentas my experience with MSI is very different, my last few motherboards for the desktop were MSI and they performed very well but I never bought their cheapest products, only the good, tried and tested ones

      that's good to hear. To be honest, they make great stuff but their service is terrible. If they would have done something to help me out I wouldn't be complaining as much. The laptop fried right after warranty and they were like buy a new computer. There are no more parts for this. I spent an arm an a leg for it and it was great while it lasted. I made a video about it. ruclips.net/video/MZ-lbYACLvU/видео.html
