Question for Troy: So I purchased the Asus RT-AX1800S about 5-6 months ago today I just purchased the ASUS RT-AX86U Pro (AX5700) primarily for my Plex server and Fire stick max running Kodi I'm hoping using SurfShark in the router is secure enough for Kodi but also my Plex server, would you consider this the most secure option for Kodi and Plex server? And a huge thank you for this great video you always have the best instructional videos thank you Troy

Anyways after this update every 20min screen goes black. Firestick screen saver is off and it just keep going black. I press a button and it goes back to start of the movie. Anyone else have this issue?

An update on my post yesterday; the Asus router VPN is now working in all situations! I had incorrectly wired the connection between the cable modem and the router (do not use the 2.5G ports). This has roughly doubled my speeds through a VPN coming in at about 80-95% of my ISP speed!

I’m connecting a ASUS RT-AX88U to my main router and it does not recognize it unless I connect the ethernet cable to the WAN port. When I connect it to the regular ports then it is not seeing the network of the main router. Any ideas on this?
Many thanks. I would have switched to this method right away, - but some applications (f.e. Disney) refuse to work when connected to via any VPN service (there are few other apps as well). When Surfshark is installed on my Android TV Box, I can exclude "Disney" from the list of apps and it will be by-passed by Surfshark. Understand this cannot be done when Surfshark is installed on the router... Any ideas?
There are routers that will exclude domains from the Wireguard vpn. I’m not sure though if they will exclude the apps on an OTT though. I use a Gl.inet Flint, and I can set policies there to either include, or exclude domains from the vpn. I don’t know enough about Asus or Merlin firmware to advise you on that however.

I thought the Asus GT-AX11000 router with the Asuswrt-Merlin firmware installed was your favorite. It's a good strong muscle router that can handle heavy duty VPN encryption protocols. A while back You published a remarkable video on how to get this set up with a VPN. I think it's the best router hands down. Especially with the modified firmware installed which gives you better configuration options. I sometimes will use the WireGuard protocol. However, I still prefer the OpenVPN protocol since it use heavier duty encryption for a more secure connection that has been true and tried over a longer period of time. The speeds are still very excellent on my GT-AX11000 router.
I like that router but this one is more realistic as far as the budget is concerned. The GT-AX11000 will be overkill for most people whereas this one hits that perfect sweet spot. You will see in the video that I'm still using the GT as my main router but if I were to need a new router today, I wouldn't spend that much and go with the one in the video.
@@troypoint I agree to a point. I would rather future proof my investment. Accordingly, I prefer to go above and beyond something that simply passes muster for today's technology as it is.
@@Ron-In-RenoBy the time the difference between the 11000 and the 86U Pro matters, you'll be looking at Wifi 7. The 11000 isn't really worth the cost.
@@jamesg8246 In any case, I would rather have more processing power than I need rather than need the processing and not have it. You really can't go wrong with performance when erring to the side of overkill. It has always paid off for me in the long run.
so for me running, Surfshark to the device and not the router I'm able get around geo-lock on some applications and not have issues with RD ( on multiple ) that uses my IP address with the same device.
I am struggling to understand how your video shows your Asus is connected to the internet when its connection is from your primary router? I already have the Asus model you recommend and also a Surfshark sub. If I connect the 2 routers vis lan ports, I do get an internet connection via both routers but cannot connect to Sufshark due to the Asus not being directly connected to the internet. TIA

There are several questions here about how to handle apps that don't work when a VPN is running and the answers all say "You can't bypass the VPN for individual apps when the VPN runs on the router but it's still better than running it on the device." It's decidedly NOT better if it prevents you from using the apps you want/need/pay for. So is the actual answer "No, you can't run the VPN on the router if you want to watch Disney or other apps like it"?
Hello, as I say in the video that is a downfall of running a VPN on the router as you can't use split tunneling. Many TROYPOINT fans use free streaming apps in conjunction with Real Debrid of they use IPTV so they don't need to play the games that these streaming services impose such as not working with a VPN.
I've always wanted to enable this, but am concerned that I would have problems with connecting to my home devices remotely. For instance, my home security cameras via a Blue Iris server, or my Honeywell Total Connect Comfort app for controlling my thermostat, or any number of other remote apps I access through my smart phone. Thoughts?
Good question. You could do what I show in the tutorial and make sure that VPN is turned OFF for those devices that you want to connect to from outside your home.
I am using mu RT-86U as a second router on my network fo use the VPN, I have it in Access Mode, in Access Mode the VPN is unavailable, is there a fix for that?.

You don't. You can only bypass whole devices that are connected to the router. I still think installing the VPN on the router is it better option since it takes tremendous resources off your streaming device.
I have it and it's on the same VPN. I had trouble with it not on the VPN. Different IP recognized it as not the same network. There's probably a way around it, but I'm not that familiar with it.
Do I need to have the Asus router connected to my AT&T router and also to my computer in order to do this or do I just connect the Asus router to my computer, set everything up, then connect to my AT&T router. I'm about ready to send this Asus router back to Amazon for a refund.
You can usually replace those with the one you want. Call your provider and ask them. You should also be able to connect a second router if they don't allow it like I show in the video.

Hello, I strongly suggest making sure you have all settings right. Shouldn't do that. Are you sure you are using WireGuard protocol. This definitely will happen with OpenVPN protocol but it shouldn't with WireGuard. also, what Asus router are you doing this on? It needs to be powerful enough to run a VPN like the one I'm using. Some routers won't have enough processing power to give good speeds.
It's a Asus mesh system the ax6600 zen wifi 6 also I have frontier 1000 mpbs of speed. So I don't know why it drop my speed so much. I did set it up exactly how you showed in the video but my speed dropped a lot. So I'm just using the app on my mecool box . But thank you for responding back. In looking at the specs, the one I'm using in the video has a 2GHZ Quad Core 64 Bit processor and 1 GB or RAM. The ax6600 has a 1.5GHZ Quad Core processor with 512 MB or RAM so this could definitely be the reason for the slower VPN speeds on yours. After installing this system, further testing has revealed that it is working on computers, tablets, and fire TV devices. It is not working on my android TV boxes. It doesn't matter if I use Wi-Fi or ethernet, android TV boxes do not use the VPN going through this router. Is anyone else encountering this? Thanks.
Working fine on all of my streaming devices as you can see in the video. Make sure your Android boxes aren't on your exclude list which I show in the video.
You should be able to add this as a second router on your home network like I show in the video or completely replace the Xfinity router with this one. Ask Xfinity how to do this before pulling the trigger. Usually they need to register the MAC address of your new router.

simply off loading the VPN responsibilities from the device to the router DOES bring better speeds. Great Video.

I don't think it's possible. Anyways, you don't need the "blazing speeds" to steam in HD. Best to be wired overall if possible.

You can get those options ( split tunnel ) if you run a custom FW on the Asus Router.
