Sunday wouldnt be Sunday without LR Time, another great video guys. I had to take my driveshafts out recently as they had developed a leak at the oil seals. I later did some reading up and found that there is a vent pipe coming up from the diff that has a tenancy to block at the tiny filter at the end and pressurise the diff over time. I have now fitted the upgraded vent filter and all seems good.

Good morning from New Mexico USA. It comforting that you have an assistant to help you with calling out the specs. I just got done swapping out an Engine for a 2010 ford Taurus. Took my time. 3 days total. No torque specs. I just turned 68 last month. I really enjoy working on my own cars and trucks. It's a never ending tasks for maintenance. Last month. I removed the front differential on my 03 Chevrolet truck 4x4. Seals had been leaking and got lots of oil all over. Bought all my little axle bearings. Seals and oil. Got it rebuilt and more seals also..anyhow. 👍
Very well done and greetings back to New Mexico. Been a while since I traveled there. 21 years I think. Me and Vera in our Dodge Durango 5.9 Magnum. It did 12 mpg. Spend a lot of time at gas stations 🙄. Still, what a great truck that was. Christian
Really enjoyed watching you both work on your Discovery it is one reason I got mine as you show pretty much every repair there is to do and I`m pretty confident with these type of jobs I won`t go into the engine side of it yet though so thank you for all your hard work. Vera in our area of the UK we say "easy peasy lemon squeezy " dont ask me why though😊😊 see you both next Sunday
Just changed my front nearside driveshaft. Your video came just at the right time and was very useful and very entertaining. Many, many thanks. All the very best from the UK.
Wow! That looked like an horrendously difficult job (even after you had edited it down to 20 something minutes). Huge Kudos to all, including your very talented son. Looking forward to next week!
Ive missed a bunch of your episodes! Unfortunately I have had things like trying to fix my own darn RR P38. I need a friend like you near me. But I missed your videos. Oh boy, then you better not watch the next video, You will be drunk before it's half way throught. But, we have fall time here, there will be plenty of time to catch up on the videos you have missed. 😀👍🙋♀️Vera
Love your videos! With your exposure issues it's probably because the camera is compensating exposure for the clouds being so bright. You could set the iris (f-stop) to manual and scroll until you get the desired brightness inside the wheel arch. Alternatively try not get the clouds in and it's should solve your issue. Keep up the amazing content! Big Land Rover love from South Africa.
That video is going to help a lot of people for sure. I can’t believe though that Vera curses 🤣 Regarding the noisy air impact. I’ve switch all my impacts over to Milwaukee battery as they have these cool right angle impacts now that get into tighter spaces, you should have a look at them. Best money I ever spent and definitely quieter than air.
@@Vera_and_Christian oh Christian I assure you it’s even more expensive in Ireland but it’s been a game changer for me. Once you buy the first unit and have a few batteries then body only purchases aren’t as bad. You could always look at some sponsorship? 😁
Fantastic content as usual. Disco maintenance with a smile, excellent. You inspired me to do my first repair on my D4 the other day (sun roof drain hose fracture ). All went well, rear disks next, wish me luck !!
I’m off out to fix my rusty leaking rear brake lines now, on a type one drive and axel stands in the pissing rain ☔️ but love my LR TIME ! Thank you for all you both do ❤

@@Vera_and_Christian yes I’ve been watching all your videos from England, and seen how you have had to do the work. "Mechanics always drive the most reliable cars " :)) we do but when your wife will only drive land rovers and goes to the dealer & buys a new one every 3 years🤦♂.... Somehow my reliable cars went to my kids and i'm driving the 2015 lr4 I was so happy to see you had installed the lift & now wouldn't have to work on your knees But your still on your knees. You have a high tolerance for pain Christian, I wish I could still tolerate those positions, nice work. Thanks for sharing
He explained in one of last videos why he does that. It's his goto position when working on anything. I cannot bend my legs like that, it is most painful for me😅👍🙋♀️Vera
Sorry I know I've already left a comment, but wanted to come back and say "y'all do good work" in response to the tail end of the video! And yes, us American mechanics DO love our old air conditioned Buicks and Pontiacs (3800 series 2!!) and Ford Rangers (4cyl version ONLY) and 90's Hondas (2.2L any flavor/version of it!) - all of these go 300,000 miles (that's a lot more in Euro-lometers). But preferably the Buick. It's like driving your old broken in recliner to work 😁
I'm breaking out in a cold sweat just now. I have to replace the NSf drive shaft seal in the diff. Whilst its on the floor.. 😱 Now im not looking forward to getting the driveshaft out!! But great video guys. As always it shows how it really is. Screw ups included. OMG.
Hi Vera and Christian, After 11 years in the United States, I have move home to England and had to sell my Freelander 2. Just before I sold it, my CV shaft failed and was clicking like yours! Mine was making a metallic ticking when turning the car slowly. I almost bought a Discovery 4 when I got home, but on the nicest one I found, with 60k miles on it, I did some checks and found that the air suspension was leaking. It was a good car, but according the service records a lot of money was spent misdiagnosing the problem and after a new compressor and new front shocks, it was still taking a long time to raise at the front and I decided I would play it safe and buy something else. I used your discussions for figuring out slow air suspension, and how the system works, to understand the issue. This is 100% a problem with repair shops and not the car. I eventually settled on a Discovery Sport, because it makes more sense for me and has coil springs. It has only 45k miles and has every option I could ask for. I am not confident enough to maintain the air suspension myself and it would be my only car, so because I cannot trust the repair shops I can't own a full size Discovery. It would have had a warranty, but with limits I don't think would cover all the work. I am very excited to pick up my new Discovery Sport. I think you would like it, even if it is more of a mall crawler, but they are also very capable, like my Freelander was. I plan to take similar trips that you two have taken around Europe, so if I am in Germany and if you want to have a beer, it would be nice to meet you both and I will reach out. Thank you again for a great video. One day I hope to buy a Defender, so maybe I can use some of the lessons here on that car one day. Have a nice weekend.
It’s a good idea to stay away from a Disco 3 or 4 in certain cases. If you rely on workshops, this car can empty your bank account quickly. We get many mails with unfortunate stories of people buying used Discovery’s, usually cheap but with above 250 t km. The repairs required can be devastating. Holy you enjoy your Sport. Good choice 👍. Christian
@@Vera_and_Christian Christian, thank you. I came to understand that I myself didn't need a Discovery 4 and am more than happy with the Discovery Sport. I have seen what they're capable of and if as you have seen many times, a Panda 4x4 can reach most places, I am sure a Discovery Sport will get there too without breaking a sweat. Haha. They seem relatively simple and I can work on it myself, so it is perfect. I also got a 3 year approved warranty, so shouldn't have to worry about any major repairs for a while. I hope you and Vera are well. Best wishes.
Excellent video Christian and Vera, i had been looking forward to this one, as i have to do this exact repair to my Discovery 3 for my MOT ( TUV ) ....take care and see you next Sunday
Robin is a very skilled young man! Great job and very timely for me. I would keep the OEM CV joins and rebuild them. The OEM is usually stronger than aftermarket. Clearly they seem more robust that the replacement ones you have installed. Vera, there is always a little metal "fluff" on the drain plugs of diff's and automatic gear box's. It isn't a big deal. If you have chunks of metal, that is bad. I still have the OEM CV joints in my LR3, it has done 239,000km now. My son (the apprentice mechanic ) is replacing the CV boots on the passenger side for me, the inner is torn, so I said to replace both boots. That is the left side here in Australia. While he is doing it the tie rod boot on the same side is being replaced, it is also torn.
Oh we will be adressing the shafts again. The ones we installed was the only option we had at the time. Surprisingly, not all components are available for sale, when you need them. 😅👍But as for the next couple of repairs, we made new local friends who have Disco's which are in dire need for them TLC from Christian. 👍🙋♀️Vera
i really love that lift just wish i had space for one and its great to know you are keeping the landrover on the road but when you screw up like that just jack the joint back up and then take the nut off thanks for the video
Thanks. Unfortunately this is unlikely to happen. We really hope that one of our vids will go viral but so far, we never saw a big gain. We will keep making videos and try to grow our channel. Christian
Thanks guys. I love the content. I've found the smaller diameter drive shaft joints don't last... in my 1995 Jetta anyway. Cost cutting gone mad. There are lots of rubbish drive shafts around.
We were not able to get any other shafts for boths sides other than the ones we bought, in all of Germany. We just bought the left side shaft for Fabian from a better manufacturer. But also only the left side was available. We are the kind of people who have to adress a problem now, not later. We don't have the time to wait for parts to become availabe again. If they fail prematurely, that would be then good RUclips content for us. 😅👍But we'll deal with that when the time comes. My cheap aftermarket propshaft is still going strong. 💪🙋♀️Vera
OMG! I can't believe Vera let loose an F-💣!!!! 🤣🤣 Nice job with those half-shafts. With all the joking aside, I bet there was some truth when Christian said he's got enough stress already. I always get a little stressed when I'm working on anything beyond an oil change.
Have to say that lr time is my favourite RUclips channel & i know only too well what's involved in the ownership of a landrover. Ive owned a classic range rover & a discovery 1 & 2, but its time to step away from the brand, but not from your channel. But don't worry Christian im not buying a Toyota! But an audi a6 3.0 bitdi avant will be our next car. Keep up the great video content, as I'll be watching every sunday. Best wishes to you & vera for the future.
The two of you have a unique chemistry that make these videos enjoyable to watch. Your explanations and attention to detail make me want to work on my own car! Alas, though I am a mere Toyota owner, so I'll probably never get the opportunity 🙂. I have a question on the wheel spacers, are the Land Rovers produced with them from the factory or are they an aftermarket addition? Keep up the great work guys!
Sooooo entertaining. I think it would be extremely entertaining if you compiled an 'out-takes' video. Really looking forward to the 'lift-the-lid' project.
I just finished replacing the front diff bearings and the transfer box bearings. I called omg a lot. All this just done on the floor. Let me put it this way: once and never again. What a job to get the transfer box out. Everything now sounds great and that for about € 300,-
Today I removed the half shaft from diff by using an 8mm rope (double braid sailing type) and a maul. The groove at the diff side of the inner cv housing is perfect for an 8mm rope. I used a taut line hitch and then snugged it up really tight. Then I tied a bowline about 800mm or so along the standing end of the rope then passed the head of my maul through it. Bowline just needs to be out far enough to give you the room to swing the maul about 1/3rd of a distance you would swing if you were splitting a log. Once the head of maul reaches the point where the rope becomes taut, the momentum is transferred to the cv housing and it pops out nicely. This works for me because I am on the ground.
I've been a self-employed LR mechanic for 20 years. I very rarely work on something other than defender or D2 and p38. every time I had a D3 or D4 / RRS on the lift I could despair. Duese vehicles are a bad design from start to finish and as soon as they've been around for a few years you can actually throw them in the scrap heap. My deepest respect to everyone who deals with this scrap. you must have nerves of steel. Live-Übersetzung
Hello Christian and Vera! Very nice video today! I did this job 2 years ago only at the driver Side. The outer rubber boot was cracked. My first idea was only to change the rubber boots on the genuine LR driveshaft. But while searching for the parts online I found these incredible cheap Driveshafts from GSP. I payed about 85€ for the left one and about 100€ for the longer one. I have driven 20.000km with the new GSP shaft on the driver side. Till today no problems with this cheap shaft. (No Offroad usage). Please inform us all about your experience with the cheap GSP shafts. This company is new for me. Gruß, Thomas
I recently purchased a 2011 Range Rover that also needed new front axle half shafts. I installed the same brand of axles you installed. Shortly after the installation both side would work loose out of the differential. I pulled the the axles and found that the inner retainer snap rings were not as strong as the original LR retainer snap rings. I replaced the Chinese snap rings with new LR retainer snap rings and now the axles stay in place in the differential now.
Keller vs Dungeon... haha :-) I remember learning there is a difference between the front half shafts for manual vs automatic D3. After the parts were delivered... And it took me about the same time to do this same job
That would have been at least a weekend for us mere mortals.... OMG! I dread to think what LRG would charge. Good job though and piece of mind for at least another 25k miles. The smaller CV joint is because manufacturing tolerances have improved no end over the last few years. Lets hope so at any rate! Great video and we like the odd schoolboy mistake - we've all been there!
Another great video from you both. Fabian, poor bloke, could have bought a new car for all the parts he's had replaced 🙈. Anyway, that two poster has definitely come in handy for this job, they do make life a tad easier! Good job by Robin on the pry bar btw👌. Look forward to next week, take care.
The joys of driveshafts 😀 The snows had barely melted when the old Freelander front shaft fell apart and I had to change it in the open on our dirt track ... getting that C Clip to disengage and then new one clicked back in at zero degC 🤫
The time has finally come to do my half shaft! How long did the cheaper half shafts last? I cannot find any original ones, so looking at some aftermarket.
I see how are you checked for play in the inner CV joint. How do you know it’s not the output shaft bearing of the differential? Just watch for weather the CV ball is loose versus the deaf bearing? Thank you, love the videos.
Darn Christian …it just clicked at 16.45 just what was on my mind since I have been watching your videos .. “Walter White’s car … you are double of Bryan Cranston and more so of Walter ! Keep it up !
A constructive comment for your excellent videos……. Now that you’re working outside, the bright sky, makes the area under the car darker in the video and not as easy to see the detail as before. Maybe you need to light the subject area or over expose to compensate? Thanks for your videos, your tireless dedication to both the work on your vehicles and the production of the videos, every week, is very much appreciated
No, we were having issues with our aux camera light and had to film without it. For every single creator, content is more important than sharpness or perfect lighting. That is why we proceeded with publishing the video. 🙋♀️
Hi Christiian, Im suprised you are not using a battery impact gun it save running a compressor, also when i need a little heat instead of using a hot blow torch, as you showing in the video I bought a cheap induction coil heater, it works well and does not set fire to the rubber dust boots, anyway i realy enjoy the videos,
@ thank you for reply. Mines an l494. Sorry did not make that clear. It’s been humming at 32 mph for 20 months now ,I’m a bit scared to tackle it. Love your Channel.
Vera's comments are so nice , and she does make a good quality manager too , I mean not ISO 9XXX ,but a real quality manager ...she checks procedures and check regularly the work of the low wage slave , but Christian should have a correct helmet and shoes for protection and mask for bad vapors from cleaning stuff ,also is not seen when the slave is correctly humidified with beer or fresh water , this is a bad point for the quality manager...
We like working on cars, especially on our Land Rovers. A Toyota is not for us as we don´t like the look of it at all. It also is slower, takes more Diesel and is less good for on-road. It is also more expensive in tax, purchase and insurance. Christian
if you ever have a loose (spinning) ball joint / tie rod etc again, instead of heat, you can put a jack under it and apply pressure to it and that will allow you to loosen it again with an impact etc.
Another excellent video, well done both of you. When you fitted the oil seals do they go in and stop against a flange? On my what-cruiser I have to measure the distance from the edge of the axle casing to the seal or the new one could go in too far. I'm surprised you had so much trouble removing the old shaft and those of us working on the ground wouldn't have room for a 100 year old bar to fit in there so a big Toyota hammer combined with a small Land Rover bar does the trick.
Another great video both of you.. You worry about the sound of the impact, when you have a huge power hammer set up in the foundry? In the nicest possible way, I'm glad you're not my neighbours! ;-) Chris
Hi guys, great video, I did this to me D4 in June, lying on my concrete drive, I have mechanic folding pads, not bad ...I was very lucky, the shafts came out with my pri-bar, still needed some force, my next job is to get the front diff bearing replaced, have you done this job? ...where do you get you Land rover data from, I've searched internet but can not find anything! ... again, great video ...Regards Norm's
Front Diff bearing is servicable and described in the LR4 workshop manual. Not sureif it is the same on the LR3. So check the LR4 workshop manual first. We did replace the front seal before and posted a video. Christian
I just changed my LH shaft I had an idea how but when I couldn't get the shaft out I came here to see what I was doing wrong I just needed more musle 10/12/2022 Michael
Really nice setup. I tried to remove my axle nut on my Saab 93 and I broke the extension bar even after I used heat in the nut. Not good. I’ll have to take it into a shop.
We used aftermarket. At the time, there where no others available. That is a big problem in our repairs that we can't get the parts we actually want and have to stick to cheap aftermarket. 🙋♀️Vera

A sailors car.... maintenance and repairs on and on, but we love it !!!!
Hi Vera and Christian,
After 11 years in the United States, I have move home to England and had to sell my Freelander 2.
Another great video. The highlight of my week. Thank you
Excellent video Christian and Vera, i had been looking forward to this one, as i have to do this exact repair to my Discovery 3 for my MOT ( TUV ) ....take care and see you next Sunday
I'm buying an LR3 next week, I'm so excited. Just haggling on the price😏
Get ready to smile and cry
👍🙋♀️Vera
You guys are hilarious. You make a great team.
i really love that lift just wish i had space for one and its great to know you are keeping the landrover on the road but when you screw up like that just jack the joint back up and then take the nut off thanks for the video
Thanks. Unfortunately this is unlikely to happen. We really hope that one of our vids will go viral but so far, we never saw a big gain. We will keep making videos and try to grow our channel. Christian
I’m glad it just wasn’t me who struggled to get shaft out as well
That is the most swearing I have ever heard from Vera! Glad the hoist is paying off and I am envious of that new pry bar your son made for you.
Christian is a good editor 😅👍🙋♀️Vera
@@Vera_and_Christian LOL
💪🙋♀️Vera
Thanks for the video very helpful.
Another great video. Vera please buy Christian a flood light for Christmas so we can see him hit his knuckles. Thank you for making me smile.
Again a great job , love the t shirt 😉 I did mine awhile back no hoist and yes 12lb hammer and persuader helped cheers
Nice work folks, as I commented last week, that B class Mercedes is the German equivalent of the Toyota Corolla a very reliable car indeed.
Uses a vice grip to hold the inner ball joint of tie rod to stop it spinning, so you can remove the nut
Great video as always but picture was often so dark I could not see much!
F bomb nice shafts and shaft size love it❤️
Another great job C & V replacing your CV
A good job done by an expert 😂😂😂👍👍👍
OMG! I can't believe Vera let loose an F-💣!!!! 🤣🤣
Nice job with those half-shafts. With all the joking aside, I bet there was some truth when Christian said he's got enough stress already. I always get a little stressed when I'm working on anything beyond an oil change.
For us, it is always time.. We have to get the job done in time otherwise it will be grounded, or lifted 😅, until next the weekend. 👍🙋♀️Vera
Such a great video. I needed this one. I want to change my cv joints too. Thank you!!!
Thanks. Audi is nice. Had a 2.8l V6 in a A6 Avant. Was thirsty so. Christian
They are aftermarket. The brand is mentioned in the video🙋♀️
Sooooo entertaining. I think it would be extremely entertaining if you compiled an 'out-takes' video. Really looking forward to the 'lift-the-lid' project.
We got so much outtake footage, it would fill a 10h video. Christian
@@Vera_and_Christian Lol. There would be people who would watch that! Not me, obviously.
I just finished replacing the front diff bearings and the transfer box bearings. I called omg a lot. All this just done on the floor. Let me put it this way: once and never again. What a job to get the transfer box out. Everything now sounds great and that for about € 300,-
👍Instead of paying thousands and getting a crappy job done by Land Rover. Good job.💪😃🙋♀️Vera

Fantastic as always guys loved the content.
Another great video,thank you 👍👍👍👍
Hello Christian and Vera!
If they fail, I install new joints on the OEM. Now with them in the shelf it’s possible. Christian
I replaced the Chinese snap rings with new LR retainer snap rings and
now the axles stay in place in the differential now.
Vera - congratulations 🎉
you have managed to learn the most useful Land Rover swear words.
Christian as the new Heisenberg 😁
@14:52 ... we heard that Vera.. we ALL heard that 😅
Keller vs Dungeon... haha :-) I remember learning there is a difference between the front half shafts for manual vs automatic D3. After the parts were delivered... And it took me about the same time to do this same job
Yes, they are different. Christian
👍💪🙋♀️Vera
Great video as usual!!
well done all ways like your vid's keep em coming
i have a lot of persuader tools they help me out every time on cars and vans, also good for the neighbours 🤣👍
😅👍🙋♀️Vera
The time has finally come to do my half shaft! How long did the cheaper half shafts last? I cannot find any original ones, so looking at some aftermarket.
I see how are you checked for play in the inner CV joint. How do you know it’s not the output shaft bearing of the differential? Just watch for weather the CV ball is loose versus the deaf bearing? Thank you, love the videos.
Darn Christian …it just clicked at 16.45 just what was on my mind since I have been watching your videos .. “Walter White’s car … you are double of Bryan Cranston and more so of Walter !
Keep it up !
I love that T-shirt..😊
It was great. As always enjoyed watching it and hope I don't have to do it on mine anytime soon. 🤣
Hi Christiian, Im suprised you are not using a battery impact gun it save running a compressor, also when i need a little heat instead of using a hot blow torch, as you showing in the video I bought a cheap induction coil heater, it works well and does not set fire to the rubber dust boots, anyway i realy enjoy the videos,
Vera, did you drop the F bomb??? I laughed like a drain! Love this content, thank you
Wait for this weeks video 😱😂👍 Christian
Great vid seen it couple times. I was wondering while you had shafts out you not spin hubs to check wheel bearings?.?
Wheelbearing is a lunchtime job for us and I can easily detect a bad wheelbearing while driving. Needs replacing once per year on the LHS🫣🙋♀️
Christian
Your guys are Adorable!
Great 👍 job & training videos!.
I follow you all times..
From USA Sac.
Thank you,
😊💪Thank you 🙋♀️Vera
if you ever have a loose (spinning) ball joint / tie rod etc again, instead of heat, you can put a jack under it and apply pressure to it and that will allow you to loosen it again with an impact etc.
The seal is installed flush. Yes, it is possible to insert them too deep. Christian
And that's why you stay with Defenders :) it's a way easier job. nice work.
Vera, you are a guiding light to Christian mechanic work and I do love his LR tee shirt. Any chance of they will come available for fans?
Yes they are available 👍👌www.shirtee.com/de/store/lrtime🙋♀️
Another great video both of you..
You worry about the sound of the impact, when you have a huge power hammer set up in the foundry?
In the nicest possible way, I'm glad you're not my neighbours! ;-) Chris
The power hammer is in a isolated room. Not too bad outside. Also the time of day plays a role. Christian
Christian
I just changed my LH shaft I had an idea how but when I couldn't get the shaft out I came here to see what I was doing wrong
I just needed more musle

Good job 👍
Really nice setup. I tried to remove my axle nut on my Saab 93 and I broke the extension bar even after I used heat in the nut. Not good. I’ll have to take it into a shop.
This sucks. Sorry to hear this.
Love your videos. I might need to replace my half-shafts soon too. I'm interested to know how much this cost you in parts?
We spend 115 and 120 for the shafts and 2x6 Euro for the seals. Shafts are darn cheap so. Will not last as long as the OEM. Christian
Great upload again Christian and Vera. Did you use genuine replacement shafts or aftermarket? If so which brand did you go for?
Take care both 😊
We used aftermarket. At the time, there where no others available. That is a big problem in our repairs that we can't get the parts we actually want and have to stick to cheap aftermarket. 🙋♀️Vera
so much easier on your 2 poster great job. Vera you need an OMG or editing at 14:52😯🤣
Thankfully, we have the creative freedom to our content. 😅👍🙋♀️Vera
