I'm pretty sure the minute the "mysterious man" pulls out soul eater (Riku's weapon) that you're supposed to recognize its him. It's pretty distinctive and he has a very specific fighting stance. It's super obvious it's him as soon as the fight starts but that's just my opinion. Plus we use it in chain of memories.
I'm not going to lie: I had a lot of fun when I reached this point. There's just something about a "one man versus the world" scenario that gets me pumped😎

Actually, we saw it once during the Roxas section and Sarah was like, "Are we supposed to know who that guy is?" and Erika said something like, "Well, I don't think you're supposed to have seen that sword before, so no." Meanwhile, I'm screaming my head off at the screen, "IT'S RIKU OH MY GOSH ITS RIKU." Definitely was screaming the same thing here XD. Btw, I love this series, Erika and Sarah. This is my first introduction to kingdom hearts, and I'm falling in love with it. I don't have room for another time consuming game in my schedule right now, but it's on my list. Thanks so much for all the fun commentary too! It is absolutely wonderful!
To be honest, I always felt like that battle was a let down. The enemies barely ever even try to attack you, and the reaction command spam makes the battle feel even more repetitive than normal. It wasn't nearly as dynamic and interesting as it could have been.
Here's a fun fact for y'all, time travel has been a thing as far back as Kingdom Hearts 2. This is what Haley had to say in an interview from not too long ago: "I'll always remember when we started recording Kingdom Hearts 2 back in 2005 I guess, the producers brought in a giant chart showing how the time travel would work and how the different doubled characters would exist in the same universe and it got very complicated very fast."
Fun fact there were originally going to be behemoths in the thousand heartless battle as it was seen in an early screen shot. Also the thumbnail of you and Sara look like you're about to fight the battle of a 1,000 heartless yourselfs.

KH2 is my favorite out of the 3 main titles, the way a new "Kingdom Hearts" is being made, the deep and sad story for nobodies, everything, it's very special for me and it's executed times better than KH3, yes I meant 3 not 1.
I know in the original game for the 1000 heartless challenge it was all about reaction commands but in final mix. It’s an excellent place to level up Limit Form!! (Provided you have some ethers to restore MP!)

Sora really deserves to be recognized as a Keyblade Master after many heroic actions he has done, including defeating 1000 heartless on his own and in a single battle.
Being a Keyblade Master doesn't really matter. The only thing that matters is if the Keyblade Wielder has a strong heart. Sora, throughout most of these games, has proven himself many times that he has a very strong heart due to his ties to his friends. The title of Keyblade Master is such a complete joke. Especially in KH3 because Sora was only able to defeat the main antagonist due to his bond with Donald and Goofy.

Riku's sword is even older than that, you see him use it even before you fight him in KH1. He has been using it since the moment he left the islands.
