I spent $1,000 at the biggest reptile expo in the country!

- Today we went to the 2024 Daytona national reptile breeder's expo! We made a trip down to florida and saw a lot of really cool and rare reptiles, including expensive snakes, lizards, tortoises, and more! I ended up spending around $1,000 on new animals, buying a giant keeled ratsnake and a couple redfoot tortoises. Since this reptile show was in florida, there were no venomous snakes at this reptile expo.

I loved how you called out the negative aspects as well as the positives of the show! Very informative. A huge plus to the video in my opinion!
REALLY appreciate the education you sneak in among all the entertainment, thanks for all the uploads and for sharing the hobby with all!
Florida Fish and Wildlife and High-End Boas don’t go well together 😂

Ouch! 😂🎯
what’s the joke here?
not a joke, sadly

Did you go to the show? I was wondering if you two were going to run into each other.
Definitely a good choice brother

As a chameleon person, I want to thank you for finding and showing the only chameleon in the entire expo.
Also, your new snake is very cute!
Australia python hybrids are a big thing... in Australia, it makes sense they might try and replicate that overseas but I don't know if you all have the stock for that. I'm personally a big fan of the export restrictions because poaching is messed up
Good job Joey and Sarah, love seeing all the animals, you wouldn't catch me there with all the snakes out and about but I am glad to go on these adventures with y'all. Kudos.
Wow, I've never seen so many different snake species in one place! Lovely lizards too! It's incredible how popular these events are, there are a lot of reptile lovers in the US. Thank you for showing us around, Joey. It was fascinating. Love your longer videos.
No such thing as a "breed" of reptile they are not dogs.
@@nanoreefer1622 fair enough, I used the wrong language. I don't keep snakes or lizards. Jeez lock me up now!
@@T-rex-o2s common knowledge that there are different species of animals (the dude says species multiple times in the video) but there are different breeds within a species such as dog (Canis familiaris).
I think this man is secretly a reptile. Nice.
I love how casual you are with these animals, I would be running around screaming but I've always had a healthy respect for snakes to be fascinated but also terrified of them.
Thanks for featuring my snake breed, the Diamond Python. The reason why Diamonds are cross bread with carpet pythons is that is what happens in nature. The Diamond python's habitat is from Victoria all the way to North NSW where it starts to really breed with Carpet pythons to the point that by the time you get to the boarder of Queensland there are only carpet pythons. Diamond Pythons also don't like hot weather 90F is about as hot as they like it and 79F about as cold as they like it. They will broomate 50 - 60F.

Always here for the humor 😂 Love it.

That house fly clearly stole the show.
I am from South Dakota, and flew down there last August and it was AMAZING! I always recommend this expo and the variety was insane! I spent way to much money there 😅
That breeders sign “I HAVE NO BALLS” sensational
I love Sarah's red foot tortoises. How are her naked rats doing? What did she name them?
That's what I was hoping he would tell us too! I wish he would feature Sarah a little more because she definitely does help other girls/women see you don't have to be scared of reptiles.
Obviously I've heard of boa's but a "high end boa"... is that some kind of CIA trained Boa with a very specific set of skills?
That blue/green Barons racer was mine and maybe you don't know this, but its is not a hybrid. Blue, green, and brown are all the same species(Philodryas baroni) and are naturally occurring colors in the wild and all from the same area(Argentina) and all breed in the wild, they don't care about color. I pride myself off genetics and lineage that is why the color was listed. You shouldn't be talking about something you don't know that could negatively impact somebody . A hybrid is a retic crossed to a Burmese or a corn to a pine or a Chahua to a crested gecko. Next time stop by my booth, I'm willing to teach anybody, no hard feeling brotha.
Thought the same thing too. He threw out a lot of opinions on things he clearly should'nt be mouthing off about. I mean he even called out Jason Hood for having Diamond Jungles.
Lmao there's also not many diamonds left in the US? Who knew 🤔
@@theherpetoculturenetwork That's cause you cant import them so every year there is less. Mathematics!
I noticed the focus fell mainly on anything that gets massive or costs over a thousand, everything else is just plain old boring carpets
@joshuacresswell7673 Of course I was throwing out opinions, it's my channel lol. We're all entitled to our own opinions. Personally I think the diamond jungle crosses look cool, but because of the scarcity of pure diamonds I personally believe that breeding those pure diamonds should be a bigger focus, before the genetics are gone from the US hobby. The US has been confiscating Australian animals that have been brought in from European imports lately, if that doesn't stop then there will be no more additional pure diamonds to add to the hobby. But that's just my opinion. Sorry if my "mouthing off" on anything else made you mad, I thought this video was pretty non-political lol.
@mutantgeckos3577
Yes, I'm aware that they are the same species. I was trying to edit the video and get it done quickly and said "hybrid" rather than "cross". I realize now that my questioning of why you chose to cross the two phases may come across as judgemental as if I think it's somehow negative, but honestly I was just thinking about it from a financial point of view. It's not like hybridizing two different species and then not telling someone about the genetics, I was honestly just wondering why you chose to breed the two different color phases rather than just breed the blue to another blue and sell the babies for double. Please don't assume that I don't know what I'm talking about, I was just curious from a financial perspective. I actually really like the species, and will likely own some in the future. Those diamond python hybrids on the other hand I wasn't a big fan of. There aren't that many pure diamonds left in the US, and I feel like making diamond crosses should probably wait until there's a bigger breeding population of pure diamonds. It's not as big of a deal when they're properly labeled, but I saw at least one at the show that I'm 95% sure was a cross and was labeled as just a diamond python.
Perfect shirt for the show.
As an Aussie that has owned many pythons, I’m blown away by the price of the pythons that I can literally go outside and catch at anytime!
USD$2500 for a black headed is just insane 😳
I was looking at some at reptile shop in Melbourne...not quite that price but still not cheap either. Not that it matters, I'm too scared to own one 😂
@@skippy8696 keep in mind that the price they’re paying is in USD also.
I couldn’t ever bring myself to pay that much but I would happily pay that much for an exotic snake from overseas 😂
So I’m somewhat of a hypocrite 🤦♂️
Dude, your content is amazing! I'd say I'm affraid of snakes, but I also am quite facinated by them at the same time 😅 I love your collection and how educational your videos are! ❤
Worth it, Ptyas carinata is one of the best snakes ever
Wish I could have gone. It looks like some awesome stuff showed up! Congrats on the new snake!!
Same, I couldn't find any expo like this near me even though I live in a city.
I'm curious if there's anything in reptile breeding analogous to people breeding "exotic bullies" for dogs. I know people breed a lot of reptiles for specific morphs, but I don't know what the consequences of that are.
If you do it responsibly, it's fine. In my experience reptile breeders are pretty responsible but, I live in the Netherlands, not the USA where laws are comparitively relaxed most of the time.
@circa134Not neurological problems, but their inner ear.
Awesome expo video, featuring actual cool species for once.
Blue x Green barons racer is not a hybrid, just two color phases of the same species
@destinationgecko1416 true, I meant to say the word "cross" rather than hybrid but misspoke and didn't catch it during the edit.

If you want a fresh Diamond Python bloodline they are easily.. available here in Norway for around 150 usd
Another comment said something about the authorities confiscating diamond python imports from captive bred populations in Europe. They're probably concerned about making it too easy to smuggle in Australian born snakes, although I get why people would be frustrated.
Love that rat snake. Colubrids have always been my favorite. Are you going to put him though a cycle of meds for parasites? Imports almost always have a significant load of internal parasites.
Love these vids 😂
This is so nifty. The shows here only have maybe three kinds of snakes.
The tortoises you guys got are adorable!

that peacock was highly suspicious
They always are…
Thats because its a peahen
I remember the Edgewater show in Orlando being decent
Being a carpet python breeder Dimond python and still carpet python just from a deferent area so breeding carpet python to Dimond python is the only way to keep the genetics that is why people do that I have been breeding for 25 years so I think that 60% of Dimond have costal In them
I appreciate the Aussie representation!

I’ve never had a reptilian pet before but those Geckos looked really cute. I’m going to have to do some reading and research to see if there’s a species that are compatible with a total beginner like me.
Unlike some people I thoroughly do my research on any new pet species before I get it. It was my long hours at work that indicated that I would not be suitable as a dog owner despite always wanting one even during childhood.
Same I would love a big dog but they'd be way too high maintenance.
lol I love how you ignore the ball python’s I tried doing the same when I went as well.

What keeps these things from turning around and biting you, is there a special way you hold them? I'm not gonna try it I'm just amazed.
He uses a hook to keep the heads away.
@@AsdfGhjkl-bd5mh I know that but I've seen people just handle a snake and never turns, why is that, are they inclined to crawl down and away?
If it's not venomous, people are fine to handle a snake. If it's a small snake, often being bitten isn't a big deal, and they'll only bite if they feel threatened. They often won't attack you because it's not like they can eat you, you're too big.
I have a really genuine question for all the people on the herpetology community: especially the ones who collect venomous snakes . Has anyone considered what to do with all these snakes once you die? Who’s going to have to deal with the burden of trying to find homes for all these deadly snakes? Everyone is so young they don’t understand they won’t live forever and this is an enormous burden on the government and family to try and deal with a room full of venomous snakes.
It wouldn't have anything to do with the government so I'm unclear why you're bringing them up? The lawyer in charge of the will would arrange a professional to collect the animals and bring them wherever the previous owner requested, whether it be to someone in their circle who they already know would be able to handle that kind of collection, or to a sanctuary/zoo.
@@AsdfGhjkl-bd5mh I used to be libertarian till I realized the world was full of children who never grew up then I realized that left completely unchecked in any way these selfish psychological children would be harboring deadly animals from around the world keeping them in tiny boxes instead of letting them roam around in their natural environment god created for them just so they could get clicks on RUclips and producing more offspring than the demand for any zoo to accommodate or the funds to care for every hobbyist snake handler and pass the burden of them financially to the government and zoo when the person passes away.
How did you pass up thay beautiful blue racer snake?!

Can someone explain why the Florida fish and wild life and boas don’t go well together
We have a problem with boas being let loose in the wild when people don't want to take care of them. They are an invasive species that negatively affect the ecosystem. Certain areas like the everglades actually reward people for hunting them.
Well, the FWC didnt identify a Burmese Python from a Boa (now banned in florida) so they were euthanizing Burms, and they accidently killed a pregnant Boa
There was a scandal a while back where they were court ordered to euthanize a bunch of non native constrictors at a guy's house. During the process, they were repeatedly told that the one enclosure held a native species and that the snake was worth $150 000 because she was pregnant. The enclosure was marked and locked to ensure that they didn't euthanize her, and despite being repeatedly shown which snake to leave alone, they still euthanized her. If you watch the footage that was released, you can see see some sketchy behavior from the officials, which makes it seem like it was done on purpose.
He would like a spa day now!!!
Does “I HAVE NO BALLS” mean the snakes can’t have babies or that the booth doesn’t have ball pythons 😭
Nice work dude
blue x green aren't hybrids. they're just the color phases of the adults.
FWC..... Fast hide your pregnant boas!
Too soon ‼️🙏😭😭
The sellers of these snakes should make their own RUclips channels
Did you get the ptyas carinata from Dan Mulleary? In fact probably not as I’m not sure if Dan would sell an animal in that condition. Still it’s an absolute belter. I love all the ptyas genus. After the carinata my favourite ptyas is the nigromarginata but I don’t think they do that well in captivity.
The carinata actually eat just about anything.
@happybee7725 yeah nigromarginata are way harder to get, and to keep from what I hear. I do have a friend that managed to get some here in the US, they're absolutely awesome snakes.
Quarter and Pounder would be awesome names lol

I think keeping em in Australia where they are not connected tp the same land mass as I am is important to my comfort level.

hybridizing species that would interact in their actual environments is ok for me, not sure why everyone frowns on it in the hobby
It's okay with me too for the most part, just not when one of the species has very few numbers left in captivity such as the diamond python. They're becoming rarer and rarer to find "pure" diamond pythons because people have begun to cross them so much and it's kinda sad.
@@Callmethelamp sort of like how most captive bred axolotls are hybridized with the tiger salamander or other things =(
Can we got some video of the dog and also of the scalie dog?
3:48 what is this referencing?
A while back, FL banned any large pythons because of the burmeses in the Everglades. A breeder in FL was able to rehome MOST of his out of state before the ban went into effect, and they kept jacking him around for being grandfathered in or being able to continue to sell the rest of his breeding stock out of state so he'd be in compliance with the new laws while telling him he couldn't have them put to sleep and just had to keep paying for their care until the state figured out what to do. They jacked him around on some paperwork so he was no longer in compliance and FWC came by to (with legal authority) threaten him with serious jail time for having banned species due to their own mess-ups, NOT his, and he said they could kill them all out of fear because they were, again, threatening him because THEY had messed up.
He warned them multiple times that he had a high-end pregnant boa constrictor, which is NOT a banned species, and was a personal pet of his that he'd had since she was born, in the same room as the larger snakes. They improperly killed all the larger banned snakes (used a bolt gun which is more of a dying animal on the side of the road sort of thing and is okay, but did not scramble the brains, so basically they died slowly) AND they saw the labels on the boa's enclosure+the snake that clearly looked nothing like a python and killed her in the same manner.
