Confidence: STAT! The Nursing Simulation Lab at Saint Peter's University

Having confidence is very important for safe, competent patient care. Students at Saint Peter's University School of Nursing have plenty of opportunities to build their self-confidence via Simulation Scenarios as demonstrated in this video which features two senior level students, Henrietta Asare and James Kelly. Both students are enrolled in the BSN program at Saint Peter's University, and are engaged in a simulation patient care exercise in the University's Simulation lab. Henrietta and James must interact with the SimMan "patient" as if he were an actual living human being in need of emergency care. Meanwhile, their professors remotely manipulate the SimMan, even speaking through him to react as a living patient would. The effects of the students' actions are being measured through the Sim technology and observed by the faculty. The lab provides students the opportunity to perform like soon-to-be licensed nurses but allowing for mistakes and the resulting consequences in a safe, non-threatening environment. At the end of the exercise, the students and the professors will sit down together at a debriefing session to analyze what went well, what did not, and how the the outcomes could be improved.
