  • A spooky Edwardian story set in the lonely, and mist-ridden fenlands of the east of England. Late in the winter, a clergyman has to visit a female parishioner down a long and desolate road. He would much rather not go, but it is his duty to give spiritual comfort.

    congratulations on your steadily growing number of listeners. I’m not surprised. These stories and your unique way of telling them makes the channel irresistible and your number of subscribers inevitable. I’m guessing many many more. This is one of those really traditional and classic sounding tales I love so much. Ever read James Herbert ? You remind me a bit of him and if you don’t know his books this is intended as very high praise.

    • @teddydog6229
      @teddydog6229 3 года назад

      Off topic here but have you ever heard the story of the vampire of the Gorbals ? As fair a Scottish lass I ever had the pleasure of knowing told me all about this shockingly nasty Glasgow slum and the absolute certainty that seized its children in the early 50s that a seven foot vampire with iron teeth and glowing green eyes was feeding on the kids s. It all came to a head in a three day hunt for the beast in a huge necropolis behind the slum. Seems this story has so many potential dark angles I’m hoping a channel will make a good story out of it.
      I’ve only just gotten into MR James. His arcane and frankly baffling footnotes threw me a bit but when you get to the meat he’s extremely chilling. To my complete non-surprise he reminded me of Ramsey Campbell because a blurb described him as sort of a modern MR James and I wouldn’t argue that point. If you’ve done any of his stories - especially with a good talk at the end - please do suggest it because I’m filled with curiosity about the man now. I know the one about the huge spiders in the tree, the statue of the monstrous Viking landlord and about the freakish figure that moves in a painting. Beyond that it’s a blank so your suggestions would be greatly appreciated !

    It's interesting how the character describes his scary experience in the woods as a subconscious phenomena by being detached from his senses but still experiencing it. Also the word boggles is a new one for me. Whether people call it boggles, shape shifter, hag woman, shadow man, dog man, hat man, poltergeist or even a jinn, which is my favourite, they all seems like the same entity that outlive humans in spans of thousands of years. It would be interesting to interview one.

And it never fails that right when I'm waiting for a bit more information.......the story ends! 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️. Did the guy who knew she was dead have anything to do with what happened? And how did that story explain his going a little kooky before his death? Strange things happen all the time but they don't make us go lolo.

There are so many twists and turns that I was always thinking I had caught them in something that didn't add up but if I thought about it long enough, I think it always worked out. But it really tests you on thinking about it. It has really fun stuff, too like a couple was sitting in a car on a super rainy night and something bangs into the driver's door. Then on a later episode it would have a character getting drunk in a bar who then staggers out and bangs into that car door. If you haven't seen it, you should. (I was actually living in Hawaii at the time and went jogging on a desolate road along the beach and came across the beach location where the crashed airplane prop for the movie was). Hi, Leslie - the boy who knew she was dead was what would have been termed at the time'a simpleton' or 'touched by God.' People such as he were also often credited with insights that others were not, e.g. he went quiet because he sensed that something bad was about to happen, evil was afoot. Once it was over, he simply knew that Mrs Vries was dead. Thank goodness there were no signs of violence because if there had been, he would likely have been railroaded as the prime suspect!
