I’m 70 and starting the guitar for the fourth first time. I bought a “cheap” Zenison resonator guitar and been working on chords and tabs for a few months. I bought the resonator guitar in hopes of just entertaining myself here in the country on my front porch on summer evenings. I’ve watched your tuning video and this one, and subscribed to your channel. I’m old, but not too old to learn!! And, I only have to please, and entertain myself! I look forward to your lessons, Ma’am
i'm a 72 year old grandpop. I've played blues all my life. I never played dobro, but I found an old National steel body in our barn. I'm tryin to learn. Can you help?
i have a SX dobro = i got it worn out a little so i put a new bridge - tuners - brass nut - a martin pick-up - and new strings - then traded my old case for a brown alligator imitation leather with gold fittings ! loving it for 6 years now .
Love it doing a great job. I'm 70 years old trying to play Dobro I know how to play guitar well, but it's all together a different instrument. Thank you🎉😂❤❤❤❤😅
Aww thanks, that's so sweet. I bought a lap steel after playing regulate guitar for years. I love your videos and the manner in which you deliver them. Thanks
Thank you so much! I’ve been looking for true beginner lessons since my son bought me a steel slide guitar for my 65th birthday, and I have never played before!
Great job! I played dobro in a bluegrass band in the eighties and early 90’s and haven’t played it since. I was amazed at how much technique I lost. It’s almost like starting from scratch! I googled “beginner dobro lessons and luckily found your video. I can’t wait to get to some more of them!
Just found & bought a Gibson Epiphone dobro at a thrift store.. looking forward to learning to play it.. glad I found your channel will be a great help
Thanks for this posting. Have had a dobro for a while. And have tried to figure it out myself. But I have been able to use it a bit on several songs as part of our church's worship team. So there is no big solo or any pressure. But it is time to step it up. This looks like just the right place to do that. Thanks again, Fred
Now I am really hooked. The muted B's is amazing. Thanks for the simple straight ahead lesson. I love your jump in there and play enthusiasm. That's what music is all about. Thank you.
Thank you Abbie! I love the way you teach this easy beginner lesson for absolute beginners like me. Just got a dobro and loving it but need more practice (who doesn't). This video was a tremendous help in learning the string relations and chords. Very simple when you show how it's so easy! Thanks again for an inspiring lesson, a great smile and and easy teaching method! Waiting for more vids! :D
I’m another guitar player who picked up the dobro after a left hand injury. Love your sound teaching style! Hope you continue to put out similar videos.
Thanks for a great lesson. Waiting for my first Dobro to arrive. Can’t wait to try it out. Nice to see someone from NJ! I work in Jersey City, when I can actually go back to the office. I live in East Brunswick.
Love this simple lesson! This is my second go round with dobro. I played pedal steel for some 30+ years. I gave up dobro the first time as I ran into a minor chord roadblock! I think I made it too hard. Thank you so much, I’m gonna know Darlin’ Cory by the end of the day…I’ll be back!
Your lesson was fun. I loved it.I subscribed. I have a steel dobro That has gotten heavy to to lay across my bad knees so I flipped it over. Now I can deal with the weight. Thanks watching it again now..!
Really refreshingly understandable! I just purchased a vintage 8 string lap steel, and would enjoy any more input on those” haunting” riffs!” Really cool! Thank you Tim
I got my first dobro a few days ago, I've been playing guitar since I was 10, and had a rock band till I was 32, but the dobro seems so different, I'm kinda .... nervous! about it!!! I'm really busy on the ranch right now, but I'm going to tune it up to a G and try to follow your lessons. You are a great teacher in every way Abbie!!! Thanks!! This is a song I wrote for my late buffalo bull Chester Sr. He's old and skinny in it , but his herd is running and full of life. :D
I do believe a Angeles sing like a Dobro sounds. I miss it when im busy and sometimes just sit and stare at it. Ok im freaking myself out now lol. Very nice lesson 👌
Fantastic! I lost the tip of my left ring finger 34 years ago, and have tried to switch to left handed. I just couldn’t untrain my brain. Gonna give this a whirl. Subscribed.
I really need to get a dobro now, this is great you're doing this. I love this song, I first heard an Italian banjo player doing it, then I noticed Red Molly does it, and now this.. thanks!
@@AbbieGardnerdobrosinger So is banjo 😁 ! Though I have played some slide in standard open G and D tunings on my junkier guitars where the action is too high, it would be fun to get a proper dobro 😁
Oh my I am soooo happy I found you. I have been trying to play my dobro from a book 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣. Now I can learn from you I do sooooo much better from actual visual thanks for your videos. God Bless
I've been playing guitar since 10 yrs old. I just got my 1st resonator,(round neck). Now after seeing your video, of course I want a square neck. I played slide on electric guitar tuned standard. George Thorogood kind of stuff. The open tunings will take a while to get used to. I got a "cheater nickel nut" I put on my old Yamaha to practice until I can get a square neck resonator. Thanks for the great lesson!
Hey Evert! Here's a whole playlist of lessons and more on the way. *bit.ly/WoodshedLessons* Let me know if there's anything specific you wanna learn. :)
Great video! I've been playing guitar for a while and wanted to try a different sound, so I purchased a $100 lap steel guitar (perhaps a Dobro some day) and I am getting addicted :-) I really appreciate simple songs like this one because I get instant gratification which makes me want to play more - thanks Abbie!
Abbie, I quit smoking a few months ago and I've been stashing my cigarette money to buy myself a reward. Because of you and this video, I bought a dobro this morning! I wish that I could get your autograph on it! 😁
Love your simplistic tutorial. Pleaseeee make moree on open G tuning. So that I can make sense of the chords and scales and all the different chord inversions. I have no idea how to use everything in open tunings.
Hey Abbie! I have been playing 5 string Banjo for 10+ years, you are inspiring me want to go out and get one. Your are just a peach, you present the instrument very well. Thanks!!!!
aw thanks! You're already set with the picks, so nothing to lose! And dobro is a nice double for the banjo - so much sustain you can play fewer notes and breathe for a minute! :)
Certainly got me going straightaway and will practice and vary the application of the note sequence to try and get other bluesy riffs. It’s a brilliant start to playing Dobro, maybe even more immediate than the Joe Stoebenau Dobro tutor book I bought off Amazon!! When I’m more confident I will try your other videos. Thank you so much!
Abbie, I'm so glad that I found your channel, my Brother gave me a square neck Dobro for my Birthday. I love this 3rd to 5th frets lesson, and then being told to just go play with it. I’m a uke player, and recently injured my left hand, so my Uke playing is temporarily off limits; however, I have a resonator uke that I tuned to an open G (g b d g) and I’ve been playing it in my lap like a dobro. It’s scratching my musical itch, but is proving to be quite challenging. Your video is helpful in that I’m a very visual learner and watching your hands work the instrument has given me something to focus on with my playing. I know scales for uke in standard tuning, but not for any open tunings. I’m hoping your videos might help there as the two instruments are cousins. You make it look so effortless! :)
I agree strumming lessons would be awesome. I’ve played acoustic all my life but never got that good because I couldn’t stretch my fingers to make god sounding bar chords. I think this instrument might just be my answer to everything
