Delighted to find this here. You and Martin Gross are my two favourite reso players. His for tunes, you for songs. I love the way you never over-play your hand. I hope to see much more of you, now that I have "subscribed". (I am just embarking on playing a Weissenborn in open D, so this will be very helpful. Bless you, and thankyou.
I just love Dobro sound and Your lessons ARE Great !! If at 72 i have a Last Wish * it Would be to master a Dobro ,I have been in Vocals since Primery School Country and Western MUSIC for Many Moons has been like my second Skin !!! Wish i lived in USA *
AWESOME Abbie! you remind me so much of the one guitar/song -writing/singing/performing, teacher that taught me more than anyone else, it's beautiful and wonderful how you play, sing , but also, explain, help and share it with everybody!! I just got my first dobro,, it's so different from guitar,! and you inspire me! to try it!, and play it! Thank you! Leo Downey, rocky mountain buffalo ranch :D
I have an old 1930 National Triolian that’s normally tuned to open d. This clip gave me a few ideas. Even though I’m not playing lap style I found things in this clip to throw in with some of the things I’m doing. Great clip. Thanks.
Abbie, you should also work with Brent Robitaille as he has a couple of nice books out for Christmas songs and Celtic flatpicking on Open D Guitar. I have my Martin 000-18 retuned into Open D. Thanks for a very nice lesson!
Abbie, thank you so much for sharing your music. You are an incredibly talented dobro player and your voice is amazing. I am fairly new to the dobro (about 2 years) and have yet to venture out of standard G tuning. I love that D tuning sound so I am going to try and learn this tune from you. Thank you also for showing how to tune into D. Also, if I may ask, what kind of strap are you using. I am looking for a good strap, one that has the clips like the one you're using.
Awesome, I'm glad it's helpful! I've got some more open D videos planned so stay tuned. As for straps, Bobby Poff makes gorgeous one of a kind leather ones, but the one in this video relieves the most weight from my shoulders. It's a Neotech Slimline - not fancy but effective.
Abbie, thank you for your amazing inspirational videos. I wonder if there is any difference in the technique of playing the Dobro and the Lap Steel guitar?
Hey Filipx! I like to think of the lap steel as a chainsaw while the dobro is a hand saw... you gotta dig in more with the dobro and pull back to use less force with lapsteel. Then there's also the use of a volume pedal and effects with lapsteel, while the dobro relies on right hand position (angle of picks on strings and distance from reso cone) to change the tone.
This bears a longer explanation, but the simplest way to put it (for this song in D) is to count up 5 from D - D E F# G A (1 2 3 4 5) - so the 5 chord is an A chord.
taking my first steps with you and my hound dog. Thank you very much for your kindness and sympathy. Greetings from Barcelona :)

Awesome, thank you! I’d love to try it on Weissenborn someday

Seems abit strange using a strap for playing lap style but whudo I know.
ya never know when you might have to run off! lol
You totally confuse me when you say a chord by number, like 1 chord, 5 chord. Please let me know what you mean by that..
I should make another video for that! Meanwhile, check my answer to your other comment! :)
