Whether performing solo or with Americana darlings Red Molly, her acclaimed tales of love and loss, both gritty and sweet, are propelled by her impeccable resonator slide guitar playing. She channels Lucinda and Bonnie, but remains pure Abbie. She plays a custom dobro made by Paul Beard, of Beard Guitars with a Bobby Poff Strap. She has taught at many summer music camps and currently teaches quarterly online songwriting classes.
What a great job you do teaching and being so positive. The last time I shook a pick out of my sound hole a Cheeto came out with it.

I’m new to dobro. I like the basic g cord strokes . I’m 74 and love this sound. Take s me a while to catch on . !
Abbie Gardner is ny new hero. Ive been messing with dobro for years and now at the tender age of 59 I feel the need to take it up a notch. I could sit at Abbie's feet worshiping her every word and movement. Some people have great skill playing but are not really that good at teaching. Wow what a teacher this gal is... WONDERFUL WONDERFUL WONDERFUL!!!

@@AbbieGardnerdobrosinger you can wait 😊 There's a reason I play at jam sessions and assisted living homes. Although I have written a few gospel songs people locally seen to like.
Just a little trick for helping your thumb and fingerpicks on. Some folks use fiddle " BOW ROSEN " just a little on the fingertip pad ,. It acts like an adhesive and even works if your palms and hands get a little sticky. Some even use it on the thumb, index, and middle finger of their tone bar slide hand to get a better grip. Really enjoy your lite hearted down to earth candid way of teaching.

I've been playing much longer than is necessary to produce a decent chop rhythm (in my mind) and still cannot - but I will keep trying. Thanks for all of this - I'm sure it will help.
Thank you for the great explanations here. I am only a little over 1 year in on the Dobro. I come from 50+ years of acoustic guitar and last 10+ years on electric bass. My current struggle is just finding the great rhythm with chords. Love, love your style. So more chords teachings please. :)

you got this Patrick! A classical background gives you a leg up on understanding rhythm and chord/melody structure, as well as a host of other things - so that's a great thing! Try the companion video to this one - it's all about playing by ear and turning off the thinking brain to feel and make stuff up. Super fun and freeing! Just staring to learn lapsteel. I've had a 51 Supro Jetking laying around for a couple years but haven't gotten around to it until now. Have played guitar a long time, so hopefully will pick it up quick. Thank you for putting these out there. Dobro/Resonators, have such a great musical sound, I love it!
I need a bar! You're a great teacher. Now to put the glass slide away. Maybe I'll try using both.
Thanks for taking the time to explain the chunk! I've been playing for a few years and I don't suck anymore, but I never put the time in to learn how to do a proper downstroke strum/chunk with thumb and now I have to go back and pick that up, because a whole dimension is missing without that. Wish't I spent the time on it back in year 1, the weird upstroke workaround I developed instead just isn't cutting it.
ah there's always room to improve, right? I'm working on reducing tension in my thumbs.
I always take over the chop when our mandolin player takes his break.

Just a thought, when you stand up to show something closer to the camera put the strap around your neck and then your hands will be where you need them. Also maybe lower the camera a little so that you don’t have to to raise the dobro up as high. Love the videos.

1:16 - I believe it's called a ring finger, (There's a clue...... you have a ring on it) ;-) Loving the beginner tips. Currently have my regular guitar tuned like a dobro, with a pencil stuck under the nut, to raise the strings.

This is such a cool technique!!! Thanks for sharing it. Would love a video on how you would use this technique over a I IV V progression. IE playing this using different chords.

Great lesson! I didn’t know there was so much muting technique involved with this instrument. I’ve mentioned before that I play a lap steel ukulele (made by Mya-Moe), and it’s a bit challenging trying to learn these skills when everything online is for a six string steel guitar. But it’s a lot of fun, and your lessons are easy to understand. And I appreciate you getting your hands a little closer to the camera! Very helpful to see how your are muting. I wish you had a video series specifically for lap steel ukulele. Not realistic, as there are probably only about 40 to 50 of these things in existence, but it would be pretty dang cool if you did.

After watching for half of the video , still no playing. Spot checked the rest and still no play. I like instructional videos that open with the them playing the very thing they are teachings AND then teaching/showing how to do it.
