Loving the videos James. So important to show the good and bad. Practice can get so result based you can leave demoralised, this tweaking to see what you are capable of and finding your windows of what you are capable of is so important.
Great video. Thanks. I love the reality of what you did here. I've never been able to spin the ball much, even with new wedges. But I'll try to replicate what you did at the range today

@@JamesRidyardGolf At time stamp, 1:32, Spin Loft is shown as Attack Angle - Dynamic Loft. Trackman defines it as Dynamic Loft- Angle of Attack. Just thought to point it out.
Great video James with very easy to understand explanation of why and how. My question is if your plane is out to in would you need to move the ball position forward? If my ball postion stays central and I swing out to in or in to out i tend to bottom out after or before the ball retrospectively as the swing is three dimesnional.....or is this just in my head!!! Thanks
Yes, I'd probably move it up a little. The steeper angle of attack is useful though when it comes to spin from any lie that isn't perfectly clean. If it compromises your strike though it's not worth it!
Love the recent content James, thank you. Question regarding when you open the face as your first example. As the further you open the face do you lower the handle each time accordingly?? When I open the face I always miss right of target?? Thanks.
Just came across this James. Love the content. I am playing around with set up. Any views on two aspects. weight distribution at set up and club loft, ie chipping with a 58 vs a 52
like the explanation and demonstration .. most coaches wont show you how to spin the ball cause they cant, thanks for this... if you can separate how to draw, cut the wedge around the green etc in different videos that would be great...
James, really enjoying your videos. When you are swinging left is it only because of changing baseline or are you also swing more left. Thanks for the information. Will you be in florida this winter if so will you be teaching at all? I don't like to brag but, I am the worst pitcher of the ball in the world. ty tony
"Slipping up the face". Doubt I can ever make that intuitive, but it's certainly fascinating. Has me wondering if it's the same physics that makes a "slice" shot skid, rather than pop up, on landing. _Technical Tennis_, I believe, says it's a function of the ball coming to ground at an angle of 20° or less - maybe slightly more intuitive for me.
Your technical knowledge has always been supreme and never been in question. But sometimes your delivery can be rather... dispassionate and even a tad boring. But in this vid (and the one for clock face vs feel) you're clearly much more engaged and it makes for excellent tuition. So I tip my hat to you. When you're up for it you're a great teacher and communicator as well as a savant. 👏👍
Awesome James. Thanks so much for this. Wondering what effect more -AOA would have as a variable? Obviously you're doing that with the left path, but can it be tweaked on it's own? Should it be? Guess there's a limit there too...
My thoughts u didn't ask for lol: adding more AOA is inherently going to happen the more left you shift the path like you mentioned. Manually adding even more AOA could add more spin in theory but then you run into potential problems with strike (i.e you have less room for error with the low point being too far in front of the ball) and it's difficult to get the spin loft just right (see towards the end of the video when he had some 'pop up' when he took the technique to the extreme). I imagine that approaching it from a less open face could give you issues with launch and the wedge digging a bit
@@robjohnson2761 That would be my thought. I think there's probably not a situation where the ROI of hitting a super steep spinner pitch shot is more than a standard to slightly increased spin pitch, especially in a competitive environment. Like everything there's outer limits and when you get steeper and steeper the first thing I think of is like you said, the strike. Whether it's inconsistency in the strike point and potentially striking the ball too high on the face resulting in decreased spin or just plain difficult to catch the ball cleanly without the leading edge digging or hitting the ball thin due to the steep AOA and low point being a good bit ahead of the ball, it just brings in a lot of difficulty. There's all sorts of rabbit holes you can go down with variables involved in these sorts of golf topics. When we are talking about increasing the AOA independently here it's nice and all but I think in reality it would be pretty difficult to not increase AOA as you try to swing the club more left like he mentioned in the video. Essentially the body mechanics/technique to swing more left also result in an increased downard AOA.
Good discussion guys. Independently increasing AoA is an option and might increase spin in a couple of ways. First off it might reduce interference/debris between club and ball which will increase friction. The 'but' here though is it will also lower launch UNLESS you can add loft late which is tough! Now, if you can steepen the attack and add loft you'll clear the path to the ball and ramp up spin loft. So it's an option but I'd say it's pretty high on the skill scale and very similar outcomes are available in easier ways ie set up loft and path shifts as mentioned.
@@JamesRidyardGolf thanks James! Will definitely have a play with this along with the other variables. But, as you say, I can imagine it's pretty tough to pull off consistently!
Great content as always James. Quick question James an Out to In path for the reasons you mentioned tends to create a bit more spin, would a contributing factor be that the Strike is more oblique, therefore the Smash is lowered affording the player to produce more speed which helps ramp up the revs?
Thanks. Yes exactly, a cut Vs draw with the same face path relationship almost always produces higher spin loft which equals lower smash and a more oblique strike.
Any thoughts on shifting strike position toward the toe? I assume this would reduce smash factor and allow you to put more speed into the shot, creating more spin compared to a centred strike on an equivalent carry distance?
Yes, I'm going to follow this video up with a little one on impact location. Hopefully film it soon. All else being equal what you are saying is correct.

Glad to see its not just me messing up on the green looking for spin😂.Spin looks great but is it not better to just be consistent.
100%. I've spoken to plenty of world class players who have looked to take spin off if anything

Yeah I tend to drop it a bit, if you don’t you’ll find the toe getting lower than the heel and the ball starting right as you’re experiencing!
