A good natural sealant for jury rigging systems like this or for temporary leak fixes is using the wax seal for a toilet. They are cheap and the wax can rubbed on or spread with a little puddy knife. It’ll last a long time and be water tight.
I was thinking the same. A smaller trench under the half bucket leech field, filled with some 2- gravel would give it some real leech power, ultimately it comes down to how well your surrounding soil percolates.
I did a similar setup for a small dairy. Used a plastic barrel, drained into black perforated pipe surrounded in gravel. Covered with straw mat ,this passed the inspection and worked well even in heavy clay with about a5ft drop.
Ridiculous. Just build a simple compost toilet with a urine diverter. This is far too complicated to be spared the minor inconvenience of taking a poop bag out of a bucket and putting it in a designated compost area like an old 55 gallon trash can with a snap on lid.

This is a functional design but you can buy emetgency complete septic systems that are self contained and will pump uphill. They are often added to long systems that need a boost to move the liquid to city sewer or sprinklet systems. Mine was pretty large pump capavity and i think i paid less than 2000.00 for the entire thing. Good video. Though
You can stack several tires in hole and drop your line into the middle. The "liquid" will seep out through the cracks in the tires but the solids should remain trapped in the column.
Over time, the solids will plug the cracks. We have some old cesspits in our area that worked like that, but they eventually sealed up and failed. Granted, it takes a fair amount of time, but it will happen.
I’ve been using a bucket with coconut fibers in it for doing #2 in keeping it dry it does not stink and when you get about half a bucket full of waste and the coconut fibers you can put it into a compost pile or bag it and put it into the trash because it’s not wet or a biomass hazard like what your doing by making something to just separating the liquid out and doing this your going to have to add lots of water to try to wash the solids down the pipe it the bucket which is going to take a while to decompose and that bucket isn’t going to hold much and your probably going to have to dig it out to empty the solids after a couple of months if you use it and it’s probably going to be very solid by then that why the county and states don’t want you doing stuff like that because someone’s going to have to clean that mess up and they don’t want to be them. Now if you are just using this for a grease trap for your sinks gray water and for your washing machine is another thing but I wouldn’t use it for your toilet ever

We have no trash pickup at our place. So we burn trash, combining the two issues we been thinking of start using a pants mounted incinerator, methane fueled, with an after burner chamber to clean it out fully by high temps. Just kinda inconvenient sitting down.
Never thought to scale it that small, but yeah, for 1 person, with care, this would probably work. I'd think a 60 to 80 litre drum as the first chamber would be as small as you'd really want, but this would pribably work. The principle is the same. Just scale to requirements. Good information.
Can't put a bidet on a composting toilet, and my wife says that's a requirement for the vacation house. I like this option, but with a Brute trash can as the first tank so we only need to pump it once a year.
55 gallon plastic drum works great, also if its for gray water like an outdoor kitchen, you can just build a soak away with a bottomless barrel and a layer of rocks in the bottom.
Air bnb? So you'll be making money from people who have no clue how careful you need to be using a toilet like this? They are not going to follow rules. Shame on you. You want to make money, make a proper (and legal) investment.
@@michaelgreen3036Bro relax, you right 100% i was just searching for options. I am not a builder, just learning but you right. This is good to use ones a year. We can call it the ones a year toilet haha
With a RV holding tank you can use the chemical packs and they will turn the poop to liquid paper too then dump the holding tank and your hood to go only thing our RV tank is about 40 gallons so for us 55 gallon drums works best.
May as well just do a composting "poop in a pail" technique and separate the liquid from it, only allowing solids. Cover each dump with sawdust, use a composting bag over the bucket, put a lid on top, and you've got a collection system that you dump into a big black composter with some leaves or greens every time it's full (about once a month for one person...) The other "grey" water can just be dumped over rocks/sand and filter naturally into the ground. After a few years your annual compost will break down to very little but usable compost. Maybe more work, but a whole lot cheaper and no digging :)
Could you bring the pipe inside the bucket up with a sewer clean out cap loose for air flow? Then you could clean out bucket without having to dig it up with a “designated” shop vac to bury the waste elsewhere like deep under compost at back of property to decompose over a year.
7:50 Soooo, this is not to code! Right? If that's the case, just dig a 6 inch wide, 12 foot long. 8 inch deep ditch, fill with anything like rocks, broken bricks or cement blocks, throw some dirt in and away you go. Iv done this several times for temporary waste and works good. Just throw some lime over and cover with dirt when finished. I have even used plastic drain tile pipe in ground 8 inches, 10 feet long and put under Johnny house. But I don't think I'll be digging it up to take with me.
I'm new to this but I'm thinking about building my own septic for a medium size rv instead of a mobile home and putting it on my 40 Thanks for the info 👍
Great mini-build.. Off Grid here. IMO, For a crapper, water is too precious off grid and maybe creates more mess than its worth at this scale. Just find a soft leaf plant like Mullein that does not irritate you, do your business in a bucket, clean and cover it with leaves all DRY. My bucket lasted over 3 months and what was in there looked like expensive topsoil when I dropped into my non-consumable landscaping which has thick leaf cover already. Diverted Urine mixed with rain water 10:1 is better than miracle grow. All three products: Toilet Paper, Planting soil and Fertilizer are valuable off grid and way expensive at the store. When on the road in my van, everything in a bag and into the trash just like Dog and Baby poop.
People would have us believe that humans and our diet is so special or unique compared to the animal kingdom. Florida is a very hot and humid place with species doing their business everywhere. My plan is compost for about a year before introducing it to non-food landscaping.
I have been living off-grid for five years and have used a composting toilet with mulch that I make in the fall full of leaf matter, straw, sawdust and garden waste. And after passing it through the wood chipper, it has helped me to create the most fertile compost I've ever seen. We have three barrels that we use to break down the toilet compost waste. When one barrel is full, we allow it to finish composting before adding it to a pilet that we allow to set for at least a year before it turns into loam like compost. Once it has had enough time to fully break down, we add it to our garden beds, which also implement permaculture techniques and produce more food than we can possibly eat. Our garden is so lush and full in fact that we give away food to our neighbors who absolutely love it. Humans only need clean air, clean water, and clean soil to live, and we urinate and defecate in our water, then, instead of using that nutrient-dense waste to produce wholesome food, we dump millions of tons of chemical fertilizers on our crops and wonder why we all get sick. And yet somehow we think this is better than composting toilets.
Work just fine, the deeper in the ground the better for the effluent water (more hydraulic pressure into the ground the deeper it is) just do not put weird $hit down the drain microbes will consume all the human waste no problem ....
Typical taper is 1/8 of a bubble off level for septic systems. Would probably work just fine with this, although I dont know if 5 gal is enough to let the solids decompose and liquify which is what a septic tank does.
What if you ate at a hometown buffet and took Metamucil before bed? Would this system be able to process that or would you have to chop up the excrement with a butter knife? Asking for a friend.
That would be a massive help for the blackwater system, which needs bacteria to break down the solids. Many septics don't work correctly because of all the antibacterial detergents that drain into them.
Great system thank you .I use a trench along my trees that I refill and re dig as i go I always put plenty grass too nature does the rest .birds love it as loads of bugs i try keep a distance as in the winter rats live the poop
Instead of gravel Big Stone or brick bust up brick put that underneath the buckets that you split in half did it give you a drain field a little area to hold water
No joke, im building my own house. I plan to do a 3 250gal totes septic system, aerobic with a "clean" water pump to remove the clean water, then use that watee to irrigate property with.
Followed his video for a larger diy barrel septic at my off grid cabin. 4 yrs later still working great
Thank you for that. We are thinking of doing an off grid cabin. That helps me know we can follow his videos, since it’s been tried by others! thanks!

Can't put a bidet on a composting toilet, and my wife says that's a requirement for the vacation house. I like this option, but with a Brute trash can as the first tank so we only need to pump it once a year.
@@reconmotorsports hhaahahahahaha
55 gallon plastic drum works great, also if its for gray water like an outdoor kitchen, you can just build a soak away with a bottomless barrel and a layer of rocks in the bottom.
What do you do when the first buck fills up?
Just keep repeating the process all over your yard.😊
@@davidpoppenhagen4278That's right. Dig down a new bucket every 2 weeks. 👍
Can i use three buckets instead of one? For a tiny a frame air bnb house?
The more the better
@@theappalachianamerican8607 All right!
I wonder if one of my trucker logs would pass through it ?
As long as the soil leeches into your councilmember neighbors yard, COOL. Just remember to plant your crops above it.
Thank you sir. Question, will it work during freezing temperatures? Also, how do you clean out the content inside the bucket?
The bottom of the tee in the first bucket do u cap also?
No, water goes up that end into the pipe going into the half buckets.
Cool, I like to learn new things.
The system in this video if its that small would probably be for 1 or 2 people right? What size would you need if you had a full family there?
you can also supercharge the system by starting it off with a box of rid-X to extend the time between cleanings
Will this work for a 30 gallon tank for a small travel trailer?
Work? As in like a dump station for your completely full 30 gal tank? It's a 5 gal bucket. What do you think will happen?
Takes two years of breakdown to get rid of certain illness
What I was thinking from years in military, just dig a hole away from your area and water sources.
Dig a well
This is good information
How do you clean out the bucket?
scoop it out with a teaspoon.
@jaya.0069 🤣🤣🤣
Work just fine, the deeper in the ground the better for the effluent water (more hydraulic pressure into the ground the deeper it is) just do not put weird $hit down the drain microbes will consume all the human waste no problem ....
Nice job. What is the pitch of the 3 inch pipe to your toilet to float those turds to the septic bucket?
Typical taper is 1/8 of a bubble off level for septic systems. Would probably work just fine with this, although I dont know if 5 gal is enough to let the solids decompose and liquify which is what a septic tank does.
Fall/grade to the tank is generally 1 in 60. Away from the tank is 1 in 120 I believe.
I'm sure the EPA loves you
Thinking of installing for a single toilet for our poolside.
What if you ate at a hometown buffet and took Metamucil before bed? Would this system be able to process that or would you have to chop up the excrement with a butter knife? Asking for a friend.
LOL, just scoop it out with a teaspoon!
Thanks for the tip. God bless.
Iv made one with two old wheelie bins two chambers joined together , would be the same length as that but deeper and more capacity.
Turd, lol 😂. Your a genius!!
Awesome job 👏 👍 are you a teacher you explained it perfectly simple
A buried van with the floor cut out and maybe a couple of feet of scallop shells makes a pretty good temporary septic tank.
Then I could bury my mother in law in it first, the poop will make her smell better!
You have n excavator and your using buckets??? Why not a 55gal
He said this isn't for use just instruction. He didn't want to spend a day hand digging
How does the poop get in?
back your camel up to the pipe that goes into first bucket
You flush it in
Why not use a taller bucket?
You didn't mention to pour in a bag of yeast to cut your cleaning period in half.
Best to have two separate systems, one for gray water 💧 ( shower, kitchen sink), another system for black water.
May as well have the ability to route from one to the other in case of failure/backup... Give ya some time to prepare for and plan your repair...
That would be a massive help for the blackwater system, which needs bacteria to break down the solids. Many septics don't work correctly because of all the antibacterial detergents that drain into them.
Thank you
Better to use a compost toilet with a urine feces separator seat I think?
Great system thank you .I use a trench along my trees that I refill and re dig as i go I always put plenty grass too nature does the rest .birds love it as loads of bugs i try keep a distance as in the winter rats live the poop
Instead of gravel Big Stone or brick bust up brick put that underneath the buckets that you split in half did it give you a drain field a little area to hold water
10:18 Must be a toilet for some creature eating plants. If you eat raw beef only, your toilet will be like mine and only flush once maybe ever 3 days.
I would use a 50 Gallon drum with the with about 8ft of leaching chambers
No joke, im building my own house. I plan to do a 3 250gal totes septic system, aerobic with a "clean" water pump to remove the clean water, then use that watee to irrigate property with.
